We walked here after a Sunday fun day private event at a venue nearby. We arrived just in time, thirty minutes before closing on a Sunday. The menu was a bit confusing, it did not include any pricing. We had a taste for peach cobbler, they were all out of actual peach cobbler but had peach cobbler ice cream. That sounds pretty tasty and we were excited to try it. After taking a selfie we found a small table by the door. It was a short wait for our sundae to arrive. The ice cream was quite delicious, we ordered one large but it was almost hard to share. Saw a visit of a food blogger to the store, so I decided to visit myself. We were visiting family and after dinner we decided for some ice cream. I actually forgot about the pies, go figure. My wore remind me when we arrived. So we order the world famous peach cobbler with a scoop of the homemade vanilla ice cream. On the first scoop, literally it was a heavenly experience. My palate was on overload, the vanilla tasted unlike anything i wver tasted before, this ice cream was made by a grandma somewhere in the back of the store. You can taste the vanilla beans, sugar and all the labor of love tbat went into making it. The peach cobbler was just warm, enough that it wont totally melt the ice cream. Too bad i live in NYC, otherwise i be here eating this peach cobbler every week. Truly a unique experience in which the quality of ingredients is key, to ensure the consistency of the product at every level. Really enjoyed the ice cream; you could tell it's homemade because of how melty it was. I had the pistachio and the bourbon butter pecan. Both were really good and the waffle cone was also great. After the high anticipation of trying this place for 3+ yrs. I finally visited over the weekend. And I don't feel as if the hype was lived up to. For starters, They messed up my order 2x as well as the order of 2-3 other customers while I was waiting. And then ended up still charging me more (after correcting the order & making me wait for it to be made). They were nice about it but I mean how can you not be when the error was on your part 2x‍ Service was extremely slow, especially with there being at least 4 (i think 5) workers @ the fromt counter. As far as the ice creams themselves...here's my take... I went specifically for the Banana pudding ice cream & peach cobbler a la mode. And was highly disappointed by both. We had... 1. Banana pudding ice cream- idl what it taste like but it didn't taste like Banana pudding. No chunks of wafers or Bananas. Not sure if they just blend it all together or what. But highly disappointed w/ this 1. 2. Strawberry cheesecake- it didn't have a wow factor. I expect cheesecake chunks, which it didn't have. I did get hints of grams though. It also was too heavy on whatever lemon that they added to it. 3. Peach Cobbler a la mode- HUGE DISAPPOINTMENT. we go the lunch cookie ice cream which didn't taste as I would have expected. The peach cobbler really disappointed me. I'm not sure if they just weren't paying attention when they scooped it out the pan, but I had ZERO peaches. Literally I had a block of dough at least about 2-3in thick with not 1 peach. And the dough wasn't fresh at all, it was pretty hard/dry, which was hard to believe since it had ice cream on top. First, I want to celebrate the fact that this is a black-owned small business, making its own ice cream! That is commendable! Unfortunately, the customer experience and the quality of the product just didn't quite hit the mark for me. The establishment itself is very well kept and clean. But when I got into line, I found myself looking around for a menu. There were big TV screens on the wall, but they only displayed a few flavors. There were clearly many different flavors of ice cream in the cabinet, but the flavors were not labeled on the glass or anything. It took a lot of head scratching until we finally got to the front of the line and learned that the menu was on a little placard that had a link you were supposed to scan. This leaves you with little time to make a decision, with a long line forming behind you. In the end, I picked the strawberry Oreo ice cream and my partner got the bourbon butter pecan. The texture of the ice cream was a bit icy--not a ton of cream in the ice cream, seems more milk-based. The flavors were also off for me--the strawberry flavor tasted artificial, the bourbon butter pecan was slightly better but it was also pretty average for me. Maybe I didn't pick the right flavors. And I did enjoy visiting a part of the city that I normally don't get to see. But I would recommend improving the menu visibility for a less confusing customer experience. read more

Always want to support black businesses and I've heard nothing but great things about Shawn Michelle's. The inside decor is so darn pretty and inviting. And the smell of ice cream and desserts is INTOXICATING! Each of the staff on the front lines were all very nice and greeted everyone with positive vibes. Quite a few delicious flavors of ice cream are available which made the choice difficult. I tried the strawberry cheesecake in a cup. The ice cream texture/consitency was perfect and the flavor was spot on. Absolutely delish. Shawn Michelle's is a gem and I hope more locations open up across the city. Passed by this ice cream shop while I was in Bronzeville one late morning. Stopped in to see what they had. Ice cream and other desserts. The ice cream is homemade. I ordered some chocolate-fudge flavor that was really good. I should have gotten pistachio because the sample alone bordered on addictive. Also had a slice of the caramel rum cake. Had rum flavor, but the texture was slightly coarse, and there was a hint of Entenmann's in each bite. Service will keep me coming back. I make my own homemade ice cream and my inner Jamaican bakes a good rum cake. But the occasional escape to Bronzeville will have me in Shawn Michelle's at times. read more

I LOVE Shawn Michele's, like literally love. While I lived in Chicago I took every single person who came and visited me to the shop. The employees are nice and attentive. I would usually see the same guy, I think his name was Wali up there who was always very warm. The banana pudding ice cream is hands down my favorite. Its a banana flavored ice cream with soft chunks of wafers. Got that every time, didn't feel right if I left without it. Going on the weekend was my favorite bc they do BOGO where you can get another flavor of the same size for free. Sometimes I would get the strawberry Oreo as my second but I think it's on the sweeter side so I had to be in the mood for it. Also their "a la modes" are great. It's the mini version of (idk what the big version is) but it's a small portion of one of their cobblers topped with ice cream. I'm a fan of ice cream, and have had ice cream all over the world in my travels, so when my friend suggested I try this place while in Chicago I was excited to do so. First off, when I entered the shop the two young guys behind the counter said "Welcome home". How heartwarming is that! Secondly, this place was so beautifully maintained- clean, great color scheme, very welcome- I felt like I could happily spend hours there with friends, even before I tried the ice cream. Had I the room, I'd have tried one of their famous cobblers but I'm more of an ice cream person than a pie person, so I prioritized accordingly. It took me a hot second to decide on flavors- they all look good and in addition to your stand-by staples there are some great options for kids and some more sophisticated options for adults. Originally I picked 3, but they've discontinued the chocolate peanut butter jelly, so I went with Jamaican Rum Raisin and Chocolate Harmony. It's been awhile since I've had a rum raising, and this one blew me away. The ice cream tasted like Jamaican rum- that funky, spiced-sweet, top-of-the-nose taste. Not rum extract- real, delicious rum. But the Chocolate Harmony was my fav of the two- the perfect balance between sweet and salty, with no one flavor overpowering the other in any of the bites. It's a dark chocolate but wasn't too rich, and the bits and bobs in the ice cream were small so that they added texture without dominating or making it difficult to eat. Absolutely perfect. My only disappointment was the ice cream was quite hard- but it was also 40 degrees out and raining, and I probably didn't wait long enough for it to soften naturally anyway. But this shop provides exactly what it says: real, homemade, delicious ice cream. Ice cream worth traveling half the continent for. And the next time I'm in Chicago, I'm gonna try the Bourbon Butter Pecan, Black Walnut, Pralines and Cream, and Honey Cinnamon Graham Cracker because *wow* do those sound amazing. read more

Wish I could rate 3.5 stars but 4 is fine for such DE-lish ice cream! The flavors are awesome on their own, but the combinations are innovative and stunning too. I am glad they are being safe, with NO indoor seating, and having to exit through a separate door from the entrance. I like the paper menu clipboard, where one can mark off what one wants in pre-sanitzed pencils, wait to be called, and insert the card in a plastic paper protector. Few issues: you can't SEE the ice cream in the case! Besides being cold/sweet, ice cream is also awesome to look at, but it's not an option here. The cases are under stainless steel. The website is the same, no pictures. Is that a hygiene issue I wonder? Another issue: The list of flavors is usually self-explanatory, but a few listed I had to ask about, as there was no description: Sweet Omega, not sure what flavor it is but it's named after the black fraternity, and Blue Moon, raspberry, are listed but not described Also there's Lunchroom Butter Cookie, which I assume is a butter cookie with vanilla ice cream? I didn't ask. You can get 2 scoops of different combos, or a Perfect Combo, 2 recommended flavors with cool names. I took the Stairway to Heaven(strawberry ice cream with chocolate cookies/Jamaica rum raisin) and my party got Barack Supreme(chocolate/pralines&cream), and bananas pudding ice cream mixed with Jamaica rum raisin. We got ours in cups to go.When we got home and added our own whipped cream, it was So On! My combo was awesome, and next time I may try my own creation. I didn't try the cobblers/pound cakes or sundaes. Gotta get a hold of my waistline, but I will definitely try them, or the Flavor of the Week. You can keep the form; they mark it and give it back to you, and if you re-use it they mark it so many times you get rewards. This place changed my pallet for the better. I went in with my spouse one day because we saw a new store open and we were not disappointed. There were so many options and the employees were all patient, helpful, and upbeat. I'm a sucker for odd or original flavors so I shot for the vegan raspberry cookies and cream ice cream. I don't know what they put in here but it was amazing. It is very smooth compared to other non dairy counterparts, so much flavor and you can taste everything! I'm writing this as I'm on the train home after stopping by here for some dessert. I had the Strawberries and cookies flavor, which was so refreshing and smooth. I don't know why more places don't do strawberry and chocolate combinations! Most of the reason I'm writing this, though, is because of the incredibly sweet and friendly employee who helped us. I never got her name, but it's been a while since I've had someone help me who was this patient. She could tell how indecisive I was over the many delicious flavors, so she kept giving me samples to try. When I asked for her advice, she was bubbly and smiled and helped me find a good choice. I got toppings on my ice cream, and was floored with how much she kept adding onto my single scoop of ice cream. It was practically buried in all that she had stacked on!! When I was done checking out, I thanked her and she was friendly up until the last second. She made my night better. I'd come back just for her. She deserves a high five and nice customers!
