So glad I finally tried their food. I did a pick up over the phone and this was ready quick. This small restaurant serves some really good fresh African food. Suya is a Nigerian dish which is a dry peanut rub mixed with other spices such as paprika, garlic, and chili on thinly cut skewered meat and is served with red onions. Here you can get suya or a suya bowl. The suya bowl can either have a base of kale or rice and you can various add ins. I had a base of rice with kale, with tomatoes and cucumbers and red onions. The chicken was nice and juicy. The bowl itself was hefty and they gave enough for the Large bowl which is easily two portions. It had about 7 decent sized pieces of chicken breasts. I like that the dry rub was sprinkled and not heavily on the chicken because it was spicy. I love spicy and the medium was hot. So be aware. I'm glad to stop in and support a local business especially during the pandemic when local businesses need us. Will come by again to try the other meats and options. read more

My review is over due, this is my to go place. At least three times a week, it's located around the college I attend. I usually get kale base, with egg, mushrooms and steak. I love the sauces and always ask for extra, extra sauce and mild suya powder. If I could buy a bottle of each sauce I would. The staff is very friendly. Insider tip: You'll be asked if you'd like BBQ sauce or aioli on top. Ask for it on the side. Our orders had so much aioli it was nearly inedible. That said, we'll definitely be coming back because the food is good. Loved the spicy flavors and friendly staff. If you're between the chicken or the shrimp, I'd go shrimp. The chicken was well seasoned, but dry. The shrimp were spot on, but you do have to remove the tails which is messy. I was finally able to order food from this takeout place. I had the shrimp bowl with kale and avocado. It was delicious. I have to see if they sell that spice mixture that was sprinkled all over my food. That spice mixture was awesome. I will definitely go back. I had a medium bowl and it was a healthy portion of food. It took me 5 buses just to get here but I was so excited to try the food. I got just the Suya in medium. It was so good. I like the fact that it didn't have a lot of fat and it was actual meat because I've been to most places and they served more fat than meet. I paid $16.33 in total for the medium and I think that it is extremely expensive for the size. It should be $12 since it doesn't come with rice or plantains like the rice bowl. Finally popped in for a bowl! Wish I had ordered from them before. I know now. My steak bowl was fantastic. I only eat steak once a month so I decided to treat myself for a meal. My first time at suya was a good experience. The shrimp taste good, even though the steak was pretty tough, everything else in this bowl was delicious. They use this african red powdering on the food which is great for people that love spicy seasoning. read more

Despite the very generous portion size my boyfriend inhaled his in 5 minutes, never seen him eat so fast. I wanted suya so badly one day and came across their ig page. I was initially thrown off by the way they served their Suya as it wasn't the way I'm use to eating it but I was BLOWN AWAY. They serve the suya in a bowl with either rice or salad with a sauce and other vegetables. I work from home which is a 20 min drive from this spot but I have driven here three times because of how good it is. If you've never had Suya check this place out. read more

Went on the hottest day in Brooklyn on a certain weekend and it was ice cold inside...nice. Suya for the uninitiated is an earthy Nigerian seasoning. I got the bowl with chicken and rice and it was very tasty dance of earthy and sweet flavors in the mouth. I'm not sure how authentic this is but flights to Nigeria (or is it soon to be United Akebulan Republic) are expensive. Good portion size for the price too. Stopped by on a Saturday afternoon for some lunch. When we walked in it looked like we were the days first customer, but the place quickly filled up with patrons lining up for Suya. My other half ordered the shrimp bowl with avocado + plantain, with a base of rice/kale. I ordered the eggplant with plantain and a base of rice/kale. Everything was made fresh to order we and so incredibly flavorful/delicious. The prices were fair and the portions were plenty. The owner is from Nigeria, he's a really friendly guy and very passionate about the food and flavor of his country. He even made a side of kale and tomatoes for our son to try. I was soo excited to try this place and I must say, it lived up to the expectation. The food was delicious. Unfortunately when we went, they had just run out of rice and was in the process of making a new batch (not surprised because the food is good) so we settled for suya with kale, plaintains and mixed veggies. We picked up on meal after ordering online during a busy weekend rush period and the folks working at Brooklyn Suya couldn't have been nicer. Great experience overall. I'm very particular about my suya. The few places I know that serve it fail to make the steak juicy and it's over cooked and dried out. But not Brooklyn Suya. Plus the kuli kuli spice the use within the yaji is amazing. Gives it a great smoky flavor. The rice is delicious and I couldn't get over how it all tasted. I'll definitely be back. I came here twice and both times my order was messed up. First time i came here i ordered salmon with plantains avocado and rice. I get home and realized they gave me a completely wrong order. However, if you've ever had really good, authentic suya, you'll be disappointed. This place is to suya what Chipotle is to Mexican food: quick, customizable, relatively healthy, but just don't come expecting the real deal and you'll be pleased. As another reviewer said, the meat itself didn't taste like it was seasoned; the suya spice is just sprinkled on top, so that was a bit of a let down. The suya spice itself is good and I wish I would've gotten a bottle to take home. Wwhat this place lacks in authentic flavor, it certainly makes up for by having amazing ambience. The shop is tiny (like, a "charming, quaint" Manhattan closet masquerading as a bedroom, tiny), and there's only room for 4-5 people to sit inside, but it's a bright, cheerful space with that makes you want to plop down and eat your food there instead of taking it to go. The owner is incredibly friendly and chitchats with customers and they had a great afrobeats playlist playing. I feel as though "hole in the wall" places are truly the best, and Suya doesn't disappoint. Super flavorful, can be made spicy, and they cook everything on the spot. They don't really have a seating area inside but they have a few tables outside. Definitely a good warm weather place if you want to sit and eat. Otherwise I recommend as take out. This is also the kind of food that tastes even better the next day so if you don't finish it all, no worries.
