This place has some great potential. I am a local and had a terrible experience with the girl behind the front counter. Here toxic energy was so bad it seeped it's way into my sandwich. She was extremely rude called me a asshole and spoke to clients around me in the same manner. I simply asked her if she could put on her mask while handling my food. He response was "I don't need to do anything, you can go somewhere else" I would have done exactly that but I had already made my order. I still go to the over priced place but I do not give a tip ever due to this negative see you next Tuesday behind the counter. But il give you a tip now, customer is King, when you are in a pandemic you locals are all you have. I love supporting local and I am sure the owner of this place has no idea that people like her are ruining his business. Edited November 2009 This re-write is long overdue, but Brooklyn Standard has definitely figured it out. They no longer offer the hot food selection that they did when they first opened, but that has given way to much more consistency and availability in their daily prepared food. Gone is the feeling that you're in a disorganized kitchen in someone's house. Everything has a right place, and it's easy now to zip in and out. Most of the time, I just stop in to pick up coffee beans, and it's always quick and friendly. They also allow you to phone in sandwich orders, upping the convenience factor. OH... and the cupcakes. They're dangerous. *** (written May 2009, 3 stars) Since it's right in my neighborhood, I was SO excited for BS to open, and now that it has been open a month, here's the review I've been waiting to write. It's definitely indicative of a new wave over on this side of McGuinness, which has nothing of the typical Brooklyn cool going on, with the exception of Grumpy, which is a little too far from my regular commute for me to frequent often. Oh, and Lucky Shot, the new and (I think) unfortunately doomed coffee shop that just opened in the old Brooklynski digs. But I digress... first, the good: Staff is super-friendly, always... Perhaps those of you who've had trouble with service there don't smile yourselves? The guy who I think is the owner is constantly bustling about, cooking, talking to customers, suggesting items, looking at new products made in small batches by local artisans. The food is good, and homemade. Coffee is great, obviously cause it's Stumptown, and it's a relief not to have to go anywhere to get beans for home anymore. Now for the bad: the place is in dire need of an organizational personality. It's even unclear what's for public purchase and what's for their kitchen in the back. I don't want to dig through a nightmarish version of my mom's overstuffed refrigerator to find something in her house, let alone in a store. Make it EASY for me to buy stuff! I want to, I promise. Because of the homemade nature of their food, it can be somewhat inconsistent. When they first opened, the hummus was soooo good. The past three times I've gotten it though... It's different. Not bad, just not as good as it was. Personally, the most annoying thing to me about the place is the feeling you get when you walk through the front door. Where should I go? What do I want? And the store doesn't help you answer those questions. The two tables in the middle are obnoxious for the shopper and I can't imagine them being a pleasant place to sit and have a cup of coffee, or eat a sandwich. There is SO much going on here... It's supposed to be "the new bodega" but the issue with that concept is that it doesn't exclude anything. And if you're trying to do it all, at least have an organizational structure that doesn't result in an overwhelmed customer. Brooklyn Standard has so much potential, and I hope they work out the kinks, because I want to like it so much more than I actually do. Low Standards. I placed an order with The Standard to have food delivered to my work. They said it would take about 30 min. 62 min later stil no food, so I called them back. They assured me that the food was on its way. The food finally shows up luke warm, small proportions and lacking silverware. I did not have any silverware at work, so tired to call the delivery person back on the cell phone number that they had just called me on to see if I could get a fork from them. No answer. So I called the restaurant back. I explained to them they I was at work and really needed a fork to eat the food. They informed me that it was getting close to the end of the delivery person's shift, and that they'd bring me a fork if they could. They assured me that they would call me back and let me know. That was 40 min ago. I haven't heard from them, so now I am posting this review. UPDATE: I called them back again and spoke with Ashley. She confirmed that they would NOT be brining me a fork, but offered to comp me a free sandwich next time I ordered. read more

When I think of what "standard" means, I think of something that is completely consistent and dependable. Brooklyn Standard is not this. It's great that they sell Stumptown coffee, but it's only on their shelves 50% of the time. Their weekday evening prepared food is delicious, but at least once a week, they don't have it for one reason or another. And I'm thankful for their gluten-free desserts, but again, only available on certain, random days. I live close by and have spent a lot of money at BS and really do appreciate them being around, but there is nothing standard, consistent or dependable about this enterprise. read more

I've probably been to Brooklyn Standard about 100 times in my lifetime and because it's so second-nature to me, I'm not sure exactly what to say. The place is solid. Any vegan in the neighborhood would be crazy not to make this a regular spot. You can always go expecting a good sandwich and a nice vegan desert, though it is just a place to carry out a quick sandwich and eat on your couch at home or at a nearby bench. I wish it was a full-on cafe and I could drink my tea and take my time, but that's not what they're trying to be. It's just a sandwich shop, but it's a good one! read more

This place has decent bagel options. I also like their almond and chocolate croissants, even though they really skimp on the chocolate. When I went to pastry school, they taught us 4 bars of chocolate per croissant. 2 is better than 1 though (which I've experienced way too often). The Bomb.com!!!!! This place is amazing and has been my part of my morning routine for 3years. They use local food and local farmers which means alot to me! There cold brewed stumptown keeps me happy the whole day threw! The staff is amazing (yes grace, especially the blazen "azn girl with tats"maybe she didnt say good morning to you because your a obvious bitch ) i've never waited more then 2 min to get my fix and im out the door and on my way to work, unlike other spots in the hood with espresso machines that make you wait in lines out the door while the barista recalls his drunkin night escapades with a friend while 15 angry people wait for coffee and are late for work. They have a great system, amazing local organic food, amazing juices, and friendly and speedy staff! And the new owner is the hardest working man on humboldt! I ordered the tofu Niçoise salad with avocado and a vegan chocolate chip cookie through seamless. The salad was a lot bigger than it appeared to be in the container it came in and the extra add on avocado was only $1.50 more and they give you half of an avocado. Not a bad deal for the money. Everything was delicious from the salad to the house dressing, perfectly ripe avocado and huge vegan chocolate chip cookie which had a hint of banana flavor. You don't miss the meat at all. Hoooooly Haters! I freakin love this place and don't judge it on what the cashier looks like like mr. bitterface down below. Although my cashier was a sweetheart when I went in... I ordered the tofu reuben and it was AWESOME. I do wish it was on rye bread instead of a sub but they threw some caraway seeds into the slaw so it helped aid the flavor. I would definitely get it again, but there are so many other vegan options to chose from that it is far too soon to double dip. Stopped by here on a Sunday afternoon while on a bike ride in the area. Grabbed two of their vegan sandwiches (seitan french dip and the jerked seitan) and a vegan cannoli! All three items I would get again but the vegan cannoli and he french dip dominated! When we arrived they had about ten people inside but they moved quickly through the line and service was actually spot on and friendly (despite other reviews). No seating inside so grab you food and head to the park next door for a nice place to sit when the weather is good. I would visit again for sure! Food =good. Delivery =poor. I ordered from them once before (i dont remember how long it took to deliver) BUT today i ordered at 1:10pm and I am still waiting for my order... Its 2:40pm now. I called them to see what happened and the lady said my "order left about 10-15 min ago (2:20pm) so i should be receiving it soon" I asked why it took an hour to cook my food and she said they're "slammed with orders". Personally, I dont think it should take 1 hour to cook eggs (breakfast platter) no matter how "slammed with orders" that you are. I love their prepared food from the hot bar m-f. i dont know of anywhere else in the neighborhood that offers a selection of vegetarian options like that - its usually one main veg dish, but then a whole bunch of different kinds of sides. i can stuff my large container and it usually ends up costing $11-13, which is not bad at all for restaurant quality food. I go there minimum once a week for this, sometimes more. otherwise, yes, the things in there are over priced - but thats just kind of the store it is. the guys that actually make the food and dish out the hot stuff are all super friendly and helpful - the people running the cashier - suck. rude. unfriendly. not sure what their problem is, but i put up with it for the yum hot food. 4/18 - i am down grading a star. since i started eating some meat i have tried their chicken from the hot bar a couple times and its not good at all. i still like their veggies, although they are very salty. read more

This is a great spot if you're craving a sandwich because their sizable menu covers just about every sandwich craving you could have. Also, there's a whole separate menu of vegetarian and vegan options, so it pleases meat eaters and veggies alike. My friends and I grabbed a few sandwiches and we definitely liked some more than others, but were all happy with our orders. There's also a small market, juice bar and lots of vegan bakery treats if you're craving something other than a sandwich. Thoroughly confused at the tastelessness, the slabs of tofu, and the skimpiness of the remaining fillings. Lots of bread (ok, but not great quality) and not much else. Healthful? Not particularly. Somehow a lot of grease (maybe from the fried tofu?). Not a lot of veggies. I felt like an overweight celiac after splitting the sandwiches with my buddies. And yup, as stated in other reviews, hot meal bar was randomly unavailable. Had it delivered and it came nice and hot, even in the rain (always a plus - and many thanks to the lad on a bike for braving the weather). Stump town coffee, fresh juice and smoothies, an entire menu of vegan sandwiches, vegan bagels, and vegan grocery items. They also have a huge selection of vegan treats-cakes, cookies, cupcakes, and even Dunwell donuts! It's great to see so many vegan options in one place. Everything I have eaten here has been fantastic. The Cali bagel and BQE Sandwich were both excellent-flavorful, fresh ingredients, and reasonably priced. The fresh juices are bomb. They accept credit cards and don't have a minimum. The girl always working the counter initially seems really rude but the more you talk to her she is actually really cool. I figure, I'd be pretty grumpy too if I worked at a sandwich shop. I love this place and want to come here every day forever. read more

3 Stars? Man. I hate to admit it but staring at that makes me wonder if I should like this place as much as I do. Well, I do, and here's why! I've only ordered delivery. Yay Grub Hub! They're lightning fast and the food always comes warm! It's kinda sad that getting your food warm is exciting but during these winter months it's a huge plus that's star-worthy. I get the vegan sammies whenever I order. My favorite is the BBQ tofu. I add more pickles to it because I'm a weirdo. The textures of it are really nice and the potato salad is a pleasant surprise. Today was my first time ordering from the Brooklyn Standard and I was very pleased. The owners seem to understand the importance of quality food and the little things that please customers. I ordered ham egg and cheese on an everything bagel and my gf ordered sausage egg and cheese on a roll. We also got two nutella cookies (friking really delicious) and two Stumptown coffees (also friking delicious). The food was fresh and tasty, the coffee was hot and it was all delivered in a reasonable amount of time. Too often these joints will haphazardly throw the food in a plastic to-go bag- the coffee spills all over and the food is unrecognizable when it shows up. Not at Brooklyn Standard. They took the time to pack the food so it was presentable. Our hot coffees were wrapped in plastic wrap to avoid spillage, the food was packed carefully into a sturdy brown bag and my receipt was neatly stapled to the front of it. Such simple little things make a huge difference. Not only will I be back for more, but I will recommend to others. Thank you Brooklyn Standard for your quality and good customer service. I deleted my original review of this place, they had some kinks to work out with being a new business. The service level has vastly improved here. The food is killer, the coffee is great. It's a bit of a mad house at times but definitely worth the wait for baked goods and hot food. Good vegetarian food and organic produce are hard to find here in Brooklyn. Especially in Greenpoint. I look forward to see how they continue to grow the business. * I hope they get a menu board so you can see what the options are, you have to ask what they have. read more

WTF? This place was great when it first opened, but it's stalled out. Staff turnover seems to be high which is sad because a lot of them were really sweet. And the usually nice vibe gets harshed when the surly guy that runs it is around. The sandwiches are still really good but the cold prepared food is not. I've tried most of it and I keep being surprised by how little I like it. The hummus is particularly weird. Like other people have commented, the layout is confusing and if there's more than 4 customers trying to order it gets chaotic. Still. I figured it was just a breaking in thing when they were newly opened but it hasn't improved. On the plus side, really good produce. I've lived on Nassau 6 years and a place like this is nice to have so I hope it succeeds. Horrible delivery service. I ordered food at 910AM and the email confirmation said it would take 30-45 mins. I called at 1010AM to ask where the food was and the women on the phone mentioned the delivery person just left and it should be 10 minutes away. 30 minutes go by and still nothing so I call back and ask again. This time the same woman tells me they never printed the order and so it was never made. It was the same person on the phone both times because she recognized that I called earlier as well. Not sure how they could tell me the food was on the way when it was never even made. Very disappointed. read more

They have great heathy options but it's not worth dealing with the rude racist woman at the check out. Several of my African American friends have shared similar experiences and interactions with her. I gave the benefit of the doubt seeing how she is Asian and in fact a minority herself. I went in and witnessed her interactions with customers in front of me as I waited in line with tuna salad and a juice. She was pleasantly professional with the white customers and automatically changed when I approached the counter. So much so that I went in another occasion with my German girlfriend - both of us wearing GoPro cameras (hidden on our backpacks). I must walked in/out of this place over 100 times when I lived down the block from here. They brew great Stumptown and their large iced coffee is a decent size and the typical neighborhood price in Greenpoint of a jaw-dropping $4. Once you get over the fact that living in North Brooklyn you get raped on coffee prices daily you can begin to judge the beans for how they really are. Stumptown is a good strong coffee that works very well for iced, it seems to have always been well brewed and tasty anytime I stopped by. Granted you run into a lot of people who look like they are cosplaying a play 'from riches to rags' then the others who wont get out of the way at the condiment bar, the annoying bike sale guy outside every day, the woman with dreads who has her kid outside everyday (do you work?), a different cashier every day, people who walk in with skateboards and walk down the street with skateboards (are the bearings broken?).... Oh yeah, and they apparently have bad sandwiches and no expresso. But yeah, that iced coffee, like Red Robin.....'YUUUUMMM'. read more

This place is sort of hit or miss. I love that they have hot food again, but their overall service has always left a lot to be desired. I've never had a good service experience there. From the cooks belittling my food choices to the uber-hipster cashiers ignoring me. Their coffee is overpriced (Stump-town or not) so I don't really think of it being a coffee shop. Their sandwiches, hot food and pre-packaged side dishes are all very reasonably priced and pretty tasty. ANd their desert choices are amazing. But consistency on all their food is never the same. The Half an avocado sandwich sometimes only has a slice or two between the bread. I miss the awesome Humus they used to have as well as the guacamole. The sandwiches here are great, but this place is seriously terrible about stocking bagels. Guys, I'm not the one that owns a mini-chain of fancy white people restaurants, but if I owned a deli that offered bagels and we ran out of bagels so often that my staff told would-be customers that we "always run out of bagels", I would try progressively increasing my bagel order until I didn't run out of fucking bagels. But, I mean, what do I know, I'm just some asshole that expects this place to have bagels and is consistently disappointed that they don't. I've lived in this neighborhood for many years and had to stop coming here because of how awful the people who work the check out counter treat the customers. Owners are bad for letting it happen. I've witnessed so many people yelled at and hung up on. If your order is wrong, it's your fault. And on top of all of this garbage, you are expected to tip for the garbage service. This place looks promising from the outside but any time I decide to give it another shot I'm always disappointed. The service is rude and the breakfast dishes I've had are seriously lacking. The "Breakfast Platter" looks like something you would get served in prison and probably doesn't taste much better. $8 for what looks like 1 scrambled egg and some sad frozen sausage. As a new vegan-ite that lives in LIC, I've been meaning to try this eatery located one [Pulaski] bridge over. Last night, I discovered that Brooklyn Standard delivers to LIC via Seamless. This is a tremendous convenience to me, as many of my favorite Greenpoint spots do not deliver to LIC. I ordered the Banh Mi sammy along with the Cowboy Cookie. Both were simple and delicious, with the delivery arriving within 20 minutes of my order -- SO FAST! I will definitely continue ordering from this spot, which has lots of vegan options and a speedy delivery system. Well done! read more
