A great neighborhood deli with a focus on sustainability and environmental responsibility. It is so refreshing to walk out of a bodega with delicious gourmet food and without a million plastic bags. I love the hummus. I guess all the rest of the reviewers are used to the bland paste with lots of preservatives that is found in the supermarket, but Shamus' hummus kicks ass! I've lived in the neighborhood for awhile now. This is one of my go-to places for a good sandwich for breakfast or lunch. There was a month or two where the attitude of the cashiers seemed not so great, but recently they have been very nice again so I'll give them a good rating. I've eaten at Brookyln Standard ten or twelve times, but this is my first time writing a review. Overall the sandwiches are awesome. I'm a vegetarian and I enjoy their selection of veg and vegan options. My favorite is the french dip: a spiced fresh seitan sandwich, on a multiseeded bun and a mushroom jus to dip it in. It's super flavorful and 'meaty', and it even better with cheese added. The BBQ tofu sandwich is also really good (but maybe has a bit too much potato salad, and not enough tofu). The Bahn Mi is a nice classic sandwich and their aioli is pretty tasty.There are grocery items available in-store (though a tad overpriced), they are convenient to add to your meal. The baked goods are also super tasty. Cloud cookies are my favorite, but so far everything I've tried has been spot on. Every cookie and cake that I've eaten has been super decadent, not too expensive for baked goods; vegan options available. The reason that I'm giving them three stars instead of four or five is their service; their delivery service has been spotty lately. They take well over an hour to deliver and have made a few errors recently. Once I ordered the french dip and it arrived with no jus (which is the best part of the sandwich!!). Another time I ordered a greek salad, which is suppose to come with olives and feta; instead I got a very plain garden salad. In-store I had my honest tea rung up as a kombucha (a few dollars more expensive). Often times I'm really in the mood for a Brookyn Standard sandwich but opt for another delivery service because I would rather it arrive quicker. Also: a two dollar delivery fee?! So after walking by this place with much interest since it opened a few weeks ago, and being excited at what looked like a nice 'American' option in this Polish neighborhood, I decided to skip Starbucks and stop in for some 'Stumptown' coffee. I walk up to the counter to order and stood there--- ignored for nearly 5-minutes (with only two other people in the store). I guess the hipster chick and tweaker dude at the grill couldn't be bothered. So I left. This place just opened, and the employees are obviously rough around the edges when it comes to customer service. I might give it another try in a few months, which hopefully by then they will have worked out the kinks... until then I'll stick to Starbucks. read more

So disappointing. I want to like this place, too -- but there's not enough consistency among the products, or convenience about it. Cookies ranged from stunning to dried and tasteless. The tea is so average compared to the "top of the line" coffee -- why not do tea drinkers justice and use Mighty Leaf or loose leaf? UPDATE: They now do! They are using Tavalon, an excellent local source! The tables in the middle are insane -- twice I've decided to "just forget it" since I could barely get in the place with all the people hanging around the tables in the middle of the store, let alone struggle my way to the hot bar. Another time, I walked past after seeing people cramming the tiny tables with laptops (this ain't a coffee house, people!). Once, I wanted to pick up something for dinner and the hot bar wasn't stocked yet (this was a few weeks ago around 6pm). UPDATE: Tables are gone! Thank you. I've had a better time going next door to the Old Poland Bakery with its cute wooden tables (and bathroom!) and freshly baked breads and picking up cauliflower, peas, pierogis and roasted potatos from the THEIR hot bar (a plate of delicious hot food for less than four bucks, to boot). As for the Standard, it's okay for the occasional pick up and to get eggs if you can't make it to the weekly local greenmarket (Union sq has Knoll Valley eggs that are cheaper and available 3x week). Otherwise, I say shop at Rachel's or Met Food (both of which are increasing their organic/vegan/vegetarian fare) and save your money and angst. UPDATE: And as for an "organic bodega," that is also out the window -- now the window boasts this is an "organic grocery." Good for them for keeping it real... July 2010 update: They have now hired a crew of non-hipsters for the line cooks. I went in to buy pastured eggs and from what I saw, the food prep was looking MUCH more efficient! The Standard is fine. I find the prices on prepared foods a little high, so I tend to avoid. I stand by egg sandwiches in the morning, $1 cup of solid Stumptown coffee, and an occasional vegan banh mi or portobello sandwich. Totally fine. I've had problems with soggy sandwiches when I ordered for take out - even when I arrived promptly. Timing seems hard here, so that may be part of the problem. I also avoid getting anything complicated during weekday mornings since the counter can move way slower than expected. It took me close to 10 minutes to get a regular cup of coffee at 11am on a weekday a few weeks ago with one other guy in line before me. This is unusual, but not as much as I'd like. read more

This is a review about the front of house staff. The cashiers are consistently rude, rush orders, and quick to laugh at customers. Yesterday, as I was paying for my order, another customer called to inquire about a delivery order they had placed 45 minutes before. The cashier, while swiping my credit card, hung up on the customer and shouted to her coworker, "this isn't my problem!" I have decided I will no longer leave a tip in the communal tip jar or receipt line when I order. Instead, I specifically give the tip to the folks who prepared my food. You can do this by approaching them from the juice counter. I encourage other customers to do the same. I do not believe the owner intends to address this rude behavior, nor do I believe these cashiers take their role seriously. Brooklyn Standard offers a wide variety of Vegan/Vegetarian sandwiches, as well as a full menu of meat-based sandwiches, vegan baked goods, and now, a bunch of gluten-free baked goods. While I'm disappointed that the vegan cakes, whoopie pies, etc. come all the way from Vegan Treats, and thus aren't housemade, the sandwiches here are really good. Some of the veganized options might be a little lackluster minus their cheese components, but overall a satisfying menu. The portobello sandwich is very good on a hearty multigrain roll. The Standard is open pretty late, and reportedly has a hot food bar in the evenings (though I've never seen it). There's no place to sit, so you'll have to take your sandwich to-go and sit in beautiful McGolrick park. read more

Decent little spot in Greenpoint with plentiful veggie options. My favorite is the Cali bagel, but let's be real here -- how in the world can you call this a Cali bagel and not have avocado on it? It needs avocado on it. I begrudgingly order mine with avocado on it for a nominal fee. It is delicious. My roommate ordered delivery breakfast from here once, and they delivered it to the wrong apartment complex. Luckily we were able to quickly resolve the issue (not because Brooklyn Standard re-delivered it, but because the person they DID deliver it to noticed the error and walked to our apartment to right their wrong) but honestly the breakfast was not good. She ordered the breakfast platter and it was really sad looking, and even sadder tasting. Even if it had been delivered a few minutes earlier, resulting in the food being a few degrees warmer, I cannot say this is something I would ever, ever order again. Not a vegan - so I can't say that it's better or worse than most vegan food (as I don't have to scour any neighborhood for it). That said - I had the báhn mi here, and it was gross. Not like "this place doesn't clean their grill" gross, just tastless/bland/oily gross. The tofu was super oily. And the overall taste reminded me of warm mayonaise. I'm sure that there are other things there that might be better. A friend mentioned the egg biscuit with some kind of meat combo. And a cup of coffee. I do love biscuits, but until the day comes where I can find the willpower to go over there and eat one, I shall throw up in my mouth a bit thinking about how a sandwich that should, for all intents and purposes, be really flavorful and delicious without much effort was rendered bland by this place. I mean, I kind of have to be thankful for this place, if only because it torpedoes my half-baked theory that virtually no restaurants in New York, especially pretty new ones, are really BAD if you're just talking about having food be kind of acceptable. And it takes a lot for me to say that some more or less standard sandwich sucks, but the cuban jalapeno kinda does. Instead of getting that kind of cubano sandwich you expect, you taste dead ham and pickle on mushy bread. Gross. Someone else has mentioned that problem with this sandwich, so it doesn't seem like a one-off thing. This was the first actual thing of food by them that I've eaten, other than the hot vegetable bar, which I found to be good but too expensive. The third-party stuff I've had is more of that. The cookies they sell are great. Maybe this really should be seen as a place where you get other places' better stuff. Also, every time I've interacted with people there, they've been professional, nice, and talkative in a good way. I get people's criticisms about the positioning of this place, but at least as far as the employees are concerned, I've found no problems here. The Standard is a healthy like deli I've come to depend on since they opened all those years ago. We do all the meals with them; lunch/dinner/breakfast. We do hot food and cold fridge items. We shop here multiple times a week and have never, not once, had a bad food experience. I order mainly the vegetarian options like that Jerk Seitan sandwich-- there is simply nothing like it anywhere around here. My friend is duly committed to the Turkey Avocado sandwich, and my husband is forever ordering the Killer or a bacon, egg, and cheese on the world's largest country biscuit. Oh-- and that vegan potato salad, I can not leave there without it. I buy a small container and make it with breakfast for the next couple of days. It's amazing. It's totally reasonably priced for the quality. You can pay with debit or credit. Coffee, not the best, it's a bit bitter for my taste. I really don't get all the negative reviews here - I love me some Brooklyn Standard. They are a little oasis of pure deliciousness on the otherwise barren and gross Seamless Web listing of delivery restaurants in Greenpoint. Full disclosure: I have only had delivery and have never been to the store. But our deliveries have always arrived reasonably quickly, with a smile, from a nice hipster wearing a bike helmet. I love that their delivery guys are NOT like most of the other delivery a-holes who cannot figure out the intercom system and insist we haul our cookies all the way downstairs to pick up our food. Brooklyn Standard brings it right to our door, usually around 20-30 minutes from the time we order. My favorites: their hot sandwiches make my tummy jump for joy. Particularly the turkey & avocado sandwich (WOW..craving one right now), and my hubby loves the bacon one with cheddar and onions (I have sampled and am also a fan), Their cookies are fresh and delicious and their side items are also super yum - the hummus is ridiculous. I have to say that they often seem to be out of certain items when we order, which is usually late evening, but they are really nice about giving us a call right away to offer a replacement. Also, they're really reasonably priced...sandwiches around $8, sides ranging from $2-$4. Bottom line - stop hating on this place, yelpers. It's awesome. read more

Simple, upscale deli in Greenpoint with the best breakfast burritos. Service is excruciatingly slow but the guacamole burrito is worth it (especially if you are hungover). For only $6 the portion size is great and the combo of the potatoes, eggs, guac, and beans is perfectly balanced. read more

I'm personally offended that this place has less than four stars. I'm vegan, and all the vegan foods there I've had are great. They have a ton of non vegan food too that looks good, I've just never tried them. The Cali bagel with tempeh is my favorite and it's only five dollars (it's tufi cream cheese, roasted tomatoes, jalapeños and tempeh bacon on a bagel)- the vegan baked goods are delicious, the salads are amazing, the coffee is solid, the French dip is delicious. They have prepackaged food too and smoothies and juice. It gets pretty busy, especially in the morning, so the people working the counter aren't always super chatty but they're nice and efficient. You usually don't have to wait long for your food even if there is a pretty long line. read more

What is the point of serving ostensibly vegan sandwiches if they're cooked in bacon lard? BS uses one, unwashed grill to make all sandwiches, which means all the "vegetarian" and "vegan" sandwiches taste like meat. BS, indeed. A neighborhood deli that provides more than stale chips and an unimpressive soda selection has long been overdue in the Greenpoint area near McGolrick Park. Therefore, I welcomed the opening of Brooklyn Standard with intense fervor akin to the awaiting of one's favorite band to hit the stage or the Soho opening of Topshop. OK, it wasn't quite that intense but I had fairly high expectations considering these are the dudes responsible for the delicious fish tacos at Papacito's. The concept of a "neighborhoody" go-to spot for your basic culinary needs is endearing although it hasn't quite come to fruition at Brooklyn Standard just yet. The bistro tables that occupy the central space of the deli are cute obstructions but aren't really practical considering the amount of customers that loiter waiting for a sandwich or two. As far as the sandwiches, I've been pleased with the BQE (pickled cabbage, hummus and cucumber) and the Classic ( a quasi-BLT that tastes best sans mayo). The staff is obliging, if slightly "too cool", but that just comes with the (neighborhood) territory. I still manage to maintain my idyllic fantasy of a quaint neighborhood market for my use and convenience a few blocks from my apartment. The homemade potato salad, hummus (even if it does have an off taste) and pickled watermelon radish further cement this notion of an intimate and quick shopping experience. I will continue patronizing as long as I need to satisfy my fix for the fast, fresh and friendly. It's sometimes difficult to meet all three of these ends in my neighborhood. read more

It is definitely a place where locals hang out/shop, so it gives it even more an appeal and character. One thing that sometimes throw me off is that they are a bit overpriced, for things that are not even organic/vegan, just an average bagel, for example. Great Greenpoint deli that opens early at 7 and closes late. The breakfast sandwiches are fast and tasty, and there are tons of vegetarian options. They have a great milk selection for coffees and teas as well as lots of healthy snacks. Their daily soups are always really good. I would actually give it 5 stars except that the service is sometimes questionable (the people at the register). I'm not so sure how coherently this review is going to read because of the great emotion this place stirs up within me. To be upfront - I hate Brooklyn Standard, passionately. Let me say that I wrestled with going to this place for a few months, even though it's just around the corner from where I live, coffee and bagels are two of my favorite foods and I always enjoy trying something new. Sure, it looked stuck-up, over-priced, and the guy behind the counter wears a woolen winter cap in 70 degree weather, but you can't judge a book by its cover, I said. It could be a great place and you'd never know solely because you think its too self-consciously hip and that rubs you the wrong way. There's plenty of perfectly good bagel stores that aren't peddling their style as a way to attract customers, after all. Finally I just said: Get over yourself James, you old crank - they might have great bagels, just give it a try. And I did, twice. I'm sorry, a bagel as is, not even sliced, should not be $1.50. I don't care how good it is. And if you are buying in bulk, you especially shouldn't be paying that much. The bagel was decent, but not memorable. A few weeks later I was in need of about 10 bagels because company was coming over and I wanted to have something light and quick for people to munch on. It was fairly late for bagel store hours, and Brooklyn Standard was the only place still open. I went hoping for a better price than the first time, thinking that the $1.50 rate couldn't possibly hold up if you're going to buy in bulk. When I asked about the pricing the guy behind the counter didn't even know the answer and had to ask around, like "hey, what happens when someone wants to buy a dozen bagels, is it still the same price?" No one seemed to even know, like this was the first time this had ever come up, and they'd been in business for months by now. "Uh, yeah, it's still a $1.50 a bagel." It really felt like they were making the whole thing up as they went along, and that it was a purely arbitrary decision. If you're going to be charging prices that high, you should at least know HOW MUCH THOSE PRICES ACTUALLY ARE. It was insulting, the last straw. I settled for 5 bagels, feeling cheated. And don't get me wrong, the bagels were ok, but for that price? No way! I despise it when stores brand themselves as if they represent Brooklyn as a whole. Yes, this is THE Brooklyn Standard, as if ridiculously overpriced faux-gourmet slung by inattentive, inept servers is now considered not only normal here, but expected. It is a frightening precedent to set. Brooklyn Standard boldly asserts its own smug self-importance through its arrogant name, gross over-pricing, and too cool to care customer service. And it concerns me that people seem to be looking past all this, as if there aren't alternatives close by. Natural Forest is similar, not as expensive or run by morons. Greenpoint has done a surprisingly good job retaining its low-key ethnic charm and humble, no-frills aesthetic over the years, keeping certain undesirable yuppie/hipster/yippie/yupster elements that only offer style and no substance out. I kinda always thought it would be able to fight its worst offenders off, as it has been - or at the very least, would be able to throw the bums out once they realized they'd been had. I imagine that Brooklyn Standard is run by the king of all self-hating, self-referential hipsters, and he is on a cynical mission to see just how much he can get away with via trend-savvy posturing and presenting itself as "the fucking cool bagel store that understand your needs as a young, urban idiot with a discerning eye and money to burn, who up until now, has had nowhere to turn". This sinister approach is indeed dangerously close to becoming the new Brooklyn Standard, and it terrifies me. It's the epitome of cynical marketing, and pandering to a potential customer base that is unfortunately all too eager to buy into it. "Hey look, man, like Greenpoint finally got a cool bagel store to go to where they play The Smiths. Thank god I don't have to go that other place anymore." Maybe this is the kind of place we deserve now. You gotta give the people what they want, I guess. Instead of great food, fair prices or friendly, informed service, the Brooklyn Standard only asserts itself as its selling point. "We know you have a choice in deciding which bagel store best coddles your identity, so you should totally come here, where we act like we don't even want your business. Now how cool is that? Don't forget to try our organic tofu-bacon spread that'll stop global warming." That'll be $9.50. I've never wanted a place to go out of business so badly. It deserves to, and if it survives I will lose a great deal of faith in humanity, particularly those within my immediate age group. People should know better than to go here, even if the food isn't altogether terrible. Some things are more important than that. read more
