I almost never write reviews. If I do, I try to make them positive. But I am absolutely done. All the negative reviews on here are dead on as far as my experience with Brooklyn Standard has been over the last year or so. So yes, it has taken me almost one year to decide to write this. I think it's really cool that they have fresh, local, vegan and artisanal products. How frequently they keep them stocked is a completely different story. I've been incredibly hungover (many times) and called for breakfast before (at a reasonable, breakfast time), only to be rudely told varying items in the menu are unavailable. Ive received incomplete deliveries, with not much consolation at the inconvenience. Also, I live nearby, in Greenpoint, so if it's going to take 45-1 hour to deliver a few items, at least give me a heads up. I'd understand if I was ordering from further away, like Williamsburg, but even then I can't pardon them for, quite frankly, doing a shit job, especially when I tip more than I ever should. (Total is $11 something, I ask for a five back, he says he only has two dollars. COOL.) The inconsistency of the menu options along with other reviewers mention of the cashiers attitudes when purchasing from this store has finally become a large enough annoyance. I work in the service industry, and I work 9-10 hours, and I'm on my feet all day, and while I may not wear a perma smile, I am not ever rude or act inconvenienced that someone is asking me to do my job. I am not asking them to do something that they didn't sign up for. I live in the neighborhood, I've been in many times, courtesy and customer service is really not asking a whole lot, especially in New York, where there are plenty of options. It would be great if I could LOVE this place. I won't be relying on Brooklyn Standard as a consistent, reliable deli. I will however, rely on the polish/neighborhood diners around the area who actually appreciate my business. read more

i really wanted to like this place. they brew stumptown coffee, so you know it's at least going to be ok. which it was. however, the problem occurred when their little metal milk pourer was out of soymilk. i brought the container up to the front register, where i was ignored for 2 solid minutes. i finally just shouted "you're out of soymilk!" and a girl came up and took it from me. she then proceeded to help other customers and briefly leave the premises, before returning, washing out the insulated soymilk dispatcher, hunt for soymilk, and refill & return it to me. now, trust me when i say that i hate starbucks, but know what they do there when a milk thingy is empty? they hand you a carton straight away while they take care of cleaning & refilling the metal thing. what a novel idea. prices here are too high and service is too bad for a return visit. read more

Note: some items on the menu have ingredients that aren't listed. For example, their sesame soba noodles contain cashews, even though it is not indicated on the menu. Called them (with my swollen eyes and swollen throat) to let them know that nut allergies can be very serious and they should indicate if anything contains nuts. I work near by so my office orders from this place at least once a week hoping that every week it might be different but its the SAME horrible rude service as the last week. Finally we have decided to add Brooklyn Standard to our Slam Book of restaurants we HATE. Besides the HORRIBLE , RUDE SERVICE the food is sooo bland. I've tried pretty much everything on the menu along with my co-workers and there isnt a THING that actually taste good. We order for about 15 people and other restaurants in the area don't give us such a hard time as Brooklyn Standard. They wont take our order over the phone and when we order online they dont bother to call us back to let us know that they are out of certain things. So when our order arrives and we are missing a sandwich and we call and ask "where is our sandwich" the rude girl on the phone says "well we figured you knew we didnt have that" .... How in the heavens did you figure we knew what you have at your store ?!? I have not idea why this place even exists and why they are so RUDDDEEEEEEEE. I can't comment on how it is for take-out but the food is decent in person, if you're willing to wait. The service was terrible-- I wanted to order more but the girl behind the counter made me feel so hurried with her 'can't be bothered by anything' attitude that I stopped wanting to talk to her. She got a couple orders mixed up and at some point the cook told her one of the orders was ready, to which she actually yelled, "I don't care!" This place is filled with smug and the only reason they're in business is that they've capitalized well on the vegan juice and coffee market. Gahh I still miss the sandwiches here and I worked here for about a year I believe. I have still honestly hands down, have not had a proper sandwich since. And I literally started working here after constantly ordering their Sammys off Grubhub yep thats when my obsession started. Breakfast, lunch, dinner or even swinging through for a few groceries! The owners are fantastic family and keep it a great family atmosphere. They have hand picked only the best and freshest ingredients for you, and carry an array of popular snacks and pre pre made delicious items for you. They work HARD to produce great food for the community and are caring toward their employees. Also you will not get a better coffee in this area. Period. I know because I used to be a part of making it! First of all you have to do training at Stumptown Coffee roasters and learn all about it. And it takes about 20 hours to cold brew with love for you. It is like coffee crack fyi so if you are now immune to the regular ol cup of Joe then definitely order the cold brew. I truly miss just walking to work, eating amazing food and then coming home with more amazing food to snack on. I received an order of expired hummus, got incredibly sick and then when I called to tell the restaurant they insisted I was wrong. I have been ordering from this place once a week for at least a year, they just lost a loyal customer and all they had to do was listen and rectify the situation. Worst. Service. Ever. read more

i like the idea of organic food in the neighborhood, and a place that's open later than 9 pm. the food was delicious, and organic (!) but admittedly a little expensive. i do not, however, like the cool kids club that now occupies the formerly innocuous sidewalks of nassau ave. in front of the standard. it feels a little like high school, when you walk by that one lunch table and you know that your outfit is being mentally cataloged and critiqued. Food - really good. Coffee - pretty good. Service in the morning - terrible. Seriously, hire some morning people to open up the store. It's not just one person in particular, I have had several grumps. Not the best way to start the day. I'm sorry I interrupted your 7:15am cigarette break, or your phone checking, or whatever. Please acknowledge me when I walk up to the counter to pay you for a cup that I then fill myself. This place is legit. Sandwiches are fine, a bit pricey. The coffee is very good, as good as Cafe Grumpy a few blocks away. The staff is friendly, and for those complaining about the 'hipster work ethic', please realize that people who work in stores are people, not your servants. Lots of jobs are mundane, so who cares if the staff here, or anywhere, aren't bending over backward to be servile. Service doesn't matter as much as quality product, and this place has top notch food and coffee. I just hope that the polish folks in the neighborhood don't mind all the hipsterczynski flooding their charming little enclave. read more

So yeah... putting prices on your product might be useful... useful at sending customers streaming out the doors. I picked up a pack of their Stumptown coffee and something seemed wrong. A bit small perhaps? So I wait in line and ask how much. The surly wench replies: $13. Wha?? Ok, so how much is in here? Glancing into the distance: "about a pound." Then she sets it on the scale to turn to the register. The scale tells a different story. 0.75 lb. Three quarters of a pound is quite a bit different than "about a pound." Look, I used to live next to Stumptown in PDX and always got my beans there, but I'm not going to pay $13 to surly cheats for 3/4 of what I used to pay $11, from someone who really knew and loved the coffee. Not to mention that this has traveled across the country and can't be as fresh as, say, just about every other coffee around that costs way less. Bah! read more

The food is great. The coffee is tolerable. The service can be INSULTING. Ive been working in coffee shops and restaurants for 10+ years and If i ever treated a customer like Ive been treated here i would not have a job. *********** I have a particular bone to pick with the blondish haired dude that wears the hat and glasses and usually works at night. I have no idea what your name is. But you are the devil of customer service. I've had more pleasant experiences dealing with bill collectors! Im a really nice person, always smiling and willing to make small talk.. BUT YOU ARE SO RUDE! you dont even make eye contact with me while im ordering a drink or a sandwich. You dont smile.. EVER. You need to be fired. You never greet me. You never say thank you. And i leave huge tips everytime i come in!! AND AND AND what's up with you serving me 5 dollar drinks that are only half full?? I will not return to the standard until you are gone or your attitude changes. I will also not recommend this place to anyone anymore. we ordered a couple of sandwiches for delivery and braced ourselves for ineptitude and attitude via hipster indifference. the guy who delivered was a prick but the food is pretty tasty. and i don't care if i have to spend $7 on a sandwich if that sandwich is: 1. delicious 2. made by someone else. 3. brought directly to where i am. the turkey avocado was nice and simple: turkey, avocado, roasted red pepper on nice foccacia. the classic was equally yum: bacon, cheddar, avocado, tomato, grilled onions on foccacia the food is 4 stars. they lose a star for the disaffected staff. read more

BF and I ordered from here last Sunday and were disappointed. We ordered the Cubano and the Avocado. The Cubano didn't look fresh...meat looked a bit tired and "store bought." It also did not come on focaccio but a baguette. The Avocado was just ok. We took only a few bites and it becamse so unappealing we had to trash it. I would not order from here again. read more

The cashier was rude, didn't smile, called her co-worker a pervert, and ate her lunch while serving me. The experience was all-around unpleasant. It looks like they specialize in vegan desserts. I love this place. The coffee - both iced and hot - is delicious, the food is top notch - healthy AND tasty, not an easy feat. They have a real commitment to local and organic products, and offer plenty of delicious gluten free and vegan options, but not at the expense of options for those of us who eat everything :) Everything I have tried here - breakfast sandwiches, salads, juices, etc -- has been delicious and left me feeling great. It's the best coffee shop in the neighborhood, hands down. In response to some of the haters below, I go here often, and observe all that's going on. The staff here is business-like and efficient, often dealing gracefully with a crowd of difficult / overly picky customers, while juggling ten things at once. I am one of those picky customers, always giving a specific order which usually deviates from what is on the menu, and I have always gotten my food in a timely manner, exactly how I ordered it, and totally delicious. Yuck! Had a gross experience here this morning. We walked in right when they opened. The girl at the counter let us know the cook had not arrived yet. We asked if she could do bagels with cream cheese and she said, "I can do that." We ordered and she walked to the back where I thought for sure she would be washing her hands. She was on the register when we came in, obviously finishing the process of opening the store (moving things, touching equipment, etc...). In the back she ran her hand through her hair, grabbed a couple knives, and DID NOT wash her hands or put on gloves. She then came back, handled our bagels, and put them in the toaster. While the bagels toasted, she went to the register and handled some money. When the bagels were ready she ran her hand through her hair again, and without any gloves or hand washing first, applied the cream cheese. As a finishing touch she wiped her nose right before taking care of our tea. We were bummed. I come in fairly regularly, so at this point I decided not to make an issue of it. We left and threw out the bagels around the corner. This place could be cool if the owner actually trained his employees about food handling and customer service in general. Seem like it would be in his best interest, because the way it is right now is embarrassing. I've had other laughably bad experiences here but I come back because it's local to me, the hot food in the evenings is good, and the guy that makes the sandwiches is cool. This place has the worst customer service i've ever experienced. I moved to Greenpoint almost a year ago and have had a bad experience every single time I go this place. You'd think it would be hard to have an issue when you're simply ordering a coffee and a bagel. Guess again. My girlfriend insists we keep going because they have good smoothies however, I recently asked for a bacon egg and cheese on a wrap, to which the lady at the register replied, "we don't have wraps". I literally look over and there are 3 wraps on the grill. She proceeded to tell me that I couldn't get a wrap because it was not a breakfast burrito. It literally didn't make any sense. So I said okay never mind, i'll just get a coffee. She then responded, " we have a 5 dollar minimum." Not once did she offer a different alternative, like "hey this is one of our best seller breakfast burritos ...or, hey you may like this.." It's literally a miserable experience. Also, the lady taking the orders has her friends come in and just hang out and talk to her while she's working. Consistent let down every time i try and give it another chance. Since this isn't the only place in the area to get a sandwich, I don't recommend stopping by. I ordered a roast beef french dip sandwich and was unhappy with it. The roast beef was very rubbery. To the point that I couldn't eat my sandwich as a sandwich. I'd bite into it and not be able to bite through the meat so I'd have to pull it out of the sandwich and chew forever. The onions were supposed to be caramelized, but they were really just watery, white and wet. I was randomly experiencing smears of horseradish. For some reason, the sandwich came with a watery, black mushroom condiment to dip it in rather than the au jus that makes a french dip what it is. The description of the sandwich on the sign was very different than what I ended up with. It was described as a regular french dip. "Thinly sliced roast beef, caramelized onions and swiss." There was no mention of the inky mushroom water, the onions were not caramelized and the rubbery roast beef was cut into long, thick strips that reminded me of tongues. They have a regular menu as well as a vegan one. Maybe they have a better grasp on how to prepare vegetables than meat, but I don't feel it's worth trying to find out. read more

I ordered "the killer" it was pretty killer even though I let it get cold. The delivery was fast as well. Now for The negative, this is yet another place that charges a "delivery" fee and then keeps it. What kinda shit is that? You realize people assume it goes to your delivery person? So how much less money do you think your delivery guys are making because you all want to add an extra $2 charge per order? Beyond that you guys seem to have some high quality ingredients yet your coffee is by far worse than Dunkin donuts!!! That's a bold statement too because I HATE Dunkin coffee. Ordered breakfast from here yesterday while staying in Brooklyn for a wedding (bagels w vegan cream cheese & tempeh bacon, coffees & a veg chick salad sandwich that we tucked away to eat for lunch). Food was GREAT. Vegan chicken salad was even better than breakfast. Delivery was 35 mins late. Tried again today( ordered last nite for a 9:15am delivery. ) by 10:10 am when I contacted eat24, to inquire about where the heck our bfast was, they couldn't reach the owner on his cell phone OR the restaurant. They agreed we should start fresh with a different restaurant. How do you run a business this way?!? Looking now at other reviews this seems to be a theme unfortunately. 4.5 stars for food; 0 stars for lack of accountability & service, so I'm averaging 3 stars. read more

I really want to like this place, and I like the idea of it and that it has vegan food, but I keep trying it and I always leave disappointed. The sandwiches are disgustingly greasy, which always seems totally unnecessary for the sandwiches that I've ordered. Last time, I ordered the Classic and it tasted like it had a ton of wasabi on it or something. I don't think I've ever thrown out almost an entire sandwich before. I think I'm done with this place, or at least the sandwiches. The pre-made salads (pesto/pasta, etc) look good. Definitely not worth the prices. read more

Ok I would given this a 4 for the food but I have an huge issue with the one employee. My company was working around the corner for 4 days on as huge project, I was told that this was a good place to get sandwiches yesterday because of the variety and I bought my team over $200 worth of food online around 11:55 and called to see if they could have it done by 12:30. There was a girl who picked up the phone, she was the asian woman(who said she was also the manager). When I say that she had the nastyest attitude towards me when i asked her if it could be done by 12:30, either way i was extremely pleasant with her and she continued to be nasty. I told her that i spent well over $200 on line and I would be wonderful if they could be done by then but no big deal and she said "you asked me a question and i answered it". I will never order from this place again. My company is working around the corner for awhile and i will make sure not to recommend anyone to this place. I will say that the guy who gave me my order when i arrived was extremely pleasant and help when I was looking for pickles. Don't spend you money here when there are other places that value your money and treat their working and paying customers better. read more

This place is OK at best. It's so hard to believe that the people who own Papacitos are also involved in this operation. They are incredibly slow and could mess up an order even if you were the only one in there. I have waited nearly 15 minutes, on a couple different occasions, to get a runny egg on a biscuit. I could easily have ran to a store, bought the supplies and gone home and made it quicker than these guys. The sandwiches are also incredibly inconsistent, some days it's pretty much just bread that you are paying for, some days it's incredibly salty, and sometimes it's actually good. Pretty decent sandwich place in green point. Somewhat disinterested people work the counter which features a smoothie bar. No regular soda or drinks other than healthy stuff but the coffee is great. Had the "killer" sandwich which was a glorified bacon, egg and cheese but really good. Had the "green point" another time with too many green, stringy veggies and made the mistake of eating it while driving - too messy and needed tons of dental floss after! The best was the chocolate cannoli (covered in a chocolate shell) filled with cream - this is a 5 star item and I'd venture here for just this item. read more

Go to the Standard if you want to wait 30 minutes for a bacon, egg and cheese on a bagel, only to open it and find they forgot bacon. The service at the Standard is shockingly slow when they are busy and when it is quiet. There is almost always something wrong with the order. Last week, I called ahead for a Bahn Mi, still had to wait 20 minutes once I arrived, and the sandwich tasted like they had thrown together some old left overs. I always regret going to the Standard and really hope another bagel/sandwich shop opens in the neighborhood. read more

so when i first moved to the neighborhood, i was super stoked about the standard. too lazy to make my own coffee and breakfast, i found myself walking daily, spending money on average bagel and coffee that could easily be saved with some homecookin! large iced coffee, $4. bagel with tofu cc, tomato and onion, about $3...so $35 a week on average food...i'm kind of all set. the staff is mixed...i was a little disappointed to find that going in there everyday, i have yet to really connect on the local cafe, "friendly, i see you everyday" level. the sandwiches look great and i have to say, their vegan baked goods are amazing, but overall, not really worth it. i think i want the brooklyn standard to be more than it is....standard! read more

Oh man, people need to take a chill pill. If you hate hipsters so much, move to Elmhurst.. This place makes alternative veg sanwiches etc which are fairly hard to find in greenpoint let alone anywhere else in the 5 borough's. Ive tried 3 seitan sandwiches so far and two were OK and one was quite good. So...they're not the best any means but im still happy that they're there, handlebar stache or not. read more

Like some other reviewers, I was excited to try this place and really wanted to like it. However, my tofu banh mi was an insult to the genre. I know, I know - what was I thinking. Well, actually I was thinking that a place specializing in vegan/vegetarian sandwiches should be able to rustle up a damn good version, stuffed with pickled veggies and sprigs of cilantro and fresh jalapeno and bean curd and good stuff like that. Oh, how wrong I was. What I got was a slab of deep-fried tofu (it oozed enough grease to TEAR THE BAG on my way home) sprinkled with about a tablespoon of shredded carrot. Mmmm! I suppose I should have gotten the hell out of there when I asked for the sandwich "spicy" and was told by the sandwich artist that he didn't know how to do that. Uh? read more
