Drastically reduced ingredients on sandwiches. I've tried several times in the last few weeks as I keep thinking things will change but they haven't. A bagel and cream cheese has the thinnest layer of cheese that it can't even be spread out the cover the bagel. A ham, egg, and cheese probably has 1/2 an egg, 1/2 slice ham and I can't even see the cheese. It's so thin you can't even taste it. This place has terrible customer service (except for the smoothie/juice guy). Based on the spillover of customers on the sidewalk everyday, I've tried it a few times and always left wondering what I did to make the cashier hate me so much. The food is very mediocre and over-priced. My final straw was when I went in on a hot day and noticed an overheated dog sitting outside without its owner. Another customer was asking the cashier if she knew whose dog it was and if he could bring it water. She REFUSED to give him a cup of water, saying he would have to pay for a bottle. I'm giving it 2 stars only because of the smiley smoothie guy. Everyone else there is the worst. read more

I never wanted to give you a bad review.... Before I moved here, I would come to BS in Greenpoint every time I visited. I was so impressed with your vegan selection and knowing I could order a vegan + GF Bahn Mi was a dream. I always called it in. I would order "A Vegan and Gluten Free Bahn Mi sandwich to go". I told everyone about this sandwich. I raved about it. Within about a year, I ordered this around 10 times. And then I moved here, right down the street. I was so excited to be able to eat these ALL THE TIME. So much that I came in, asked where you got the bread because it was SO good, and when one of your employees emailed me the info I was SHOCKED that this bread is not vegan as it contains egg. When someone orders a VEGAN sandwich, you NEED to tell them that the GF bread is NOT vegan. This is incredibly irresponsible and disappointing. I contacted you twice on your contact page with a long note about this and no one ever responded. I am shocked that for as many vegan items as you carry, you would be this irresponsible. Before I moved from BK I would go to the standard everyday. To get a coffee - sure but also popping in and saying hi to the staff became ingrained in my everyday. In a city where everyday life can really beat you up and ware you down it was such a beautiful part of my life to have place where people knew my name. This is essentially a bodega with delusions of grandeur. Pricey despite relatively basic deli fare masquerading as gourmet. If you're a vegan this might be a decent alternative, especially if the alternative is pigeon on a stick. The biggest issue I have is the staff: consistently unpleasant and periodically rude. Let me just preface this by saying that I have never written a Yelp review before, so this is a really special moment/ I can't believe I'm wasting my precious time. The only reason I go to The Standard is because it's right around the block from my apartment. The food is decent, yet overpriced (but hey, what isn't these days). The real problem is the staff. Delivery was super quick without any crazy fees, but they brought the wrong product and didn't bother to call me to 1) let me know or 2) ask if I wanted a different flavor. This restaurant will repeatedly send the wrong items as part of their orders. If you call to complain the woman who answers the phone (if you can even get anyone there on the phone) will give you attitude and tell you that they are "too busy" to tell people if they are out of items so they just send something else they have in stock instead (and not even close substitutions). Because paying for it apparently does not mean you should actually get what you ordered?! Recently, I called them to complain about them never toasting bagels when you specifically request for them to be toasted in the order. Well apparently their reaction to this is not to be more careful when fulfilling their orders, but instead to vindictively toast my bagel beyond the point of all recognition. Literally the bagel is so charred it is black both inside (where the cream cheese goes) and out. There is no way the person making/packing up my order didn't notice this - meaning they clearly did this on purpose as "what happens if you complain about your order." It's literally inedible. When I called the restaurant to complain, the woman answering the phone goes "ok, well thanks for letting us know." No offer of a refund, no apologies, no nothing. I waited for well over an hour for my food and when it still didn't arrive, I called them to follow up. The very bored sounding girl who answered said the delivery guy left with all the deliveries. As someone else has mentioned, I've ordered the the French Dip at LEAST 4 times and it has shown up without the au jus. The cashier workers (as in the two lady baristas, the kickin' lady baristas) that I've met are tremendous and kind. Hard workers. Fine, owner of the Standard, keep your dogs on the benches and have vegan sandwiches and Banh Mi for a king's ransom and all that. I don't even care that the food service can be dreadful. I've ordered from here a number of times for lunch at work. For the most part, orders have been correct and relatively tasty. One item I particularly didn't like was the vegan banh mi. Today I ordered for the first time in a long time. I got a large celery, cuc, kale, apple, lemon juice and a vegan French dip w/ mushroom jus. Normally it's vegetarian but they have an option to make it vegan and leave off cheese. They clearly didn't pay close attention to my order because when it arrived, it had cheese on it. I was really disappointed but not enough so to go through the hassle of calling the rude girl everyone references in their reviews and getting a new one, so I just ate it because I'm not that strict of a vegan... however, some people are deadly serious and this would have made the sandwich inedible for them. It's a whopper of a mistake to make. That being said, the sandwich was really tasty. I hope I'm mistaken about the cheese..maybe it was something else. I was trying to find some cheap but good breakfast places within walking distance and ran across The Standard. Decided to check it out mainly because it was cheaper and had Stumptown coffee. We walk in and it's more of a bodega style place, which is fine, I just thought there would be a sit down area. My boyfriend decided to walk up and order something and as he was telling the girl his order, another guy walked up and told her what he wanted, while she tells my boyfriend to hold on. Now, how are you going to put a new potential customer aside to serve a regular. Your regular is going to keep coming back and you just lost another possible regular. We both ordered just a egg cheese biscuit and I got some coffee. I think I spent only $5 which is way better than spending $9-$12 at Lunchbox. The biscuit was huge which is okay by me because I love them but it was actually kind of hard and really really dry. I know it's a simple meal but I also have had really great ones and really plain ones and I feel like theirs was lacking for the price. The coffee on the other hand is so yummy. I put sugar and cinnamon in mine. I doubt I will go back just mainly because of the rude service. Maybe they're trying to do too much at Brooklyn Standard. I appreciate the sentiment - I do. I would love to have a place to purchase unprepared and prepared organic foods, coffee, sweets, etc but something is just not quite working. The vegetables look kind of funky. And with so many places to buy fresh veggies in Greenpoint why would you go where they are far more expensive? The coffee is soooo expensive. Once, the iced coffee, clearly burned to hell and 3 days old, induced severe gagging with just a sip. They replaced the coffee for me but hardly acknowledged that such foul coffee could have killed someone. Brooklyn Standard's one salvation is the delicious egg and cheese breakfast sandwich and, if you have at least 1/2 hour to spare, I highly recommend fighting for counter service to order one. Brooklyn Standard made me very sad. Several months ago I ordered the portobello mushroom sandwich and it was beautiful in every way. My eyes, lips, nose, stomach and soul adored it. That has never happened again. I've ordered from there several times since then, however, they failed miserably to replicate the experience. Not just failed to measure up, but missed the mark entirely. Now I feel like a fool because I've told so many people to try the mushroom sandwich and now my opinion is not worth the paper the sandwich is wrapped in. Okay, so I moved to the salads. Overpriced, less than satisfying and too cold. The straw that broke the camels back is the coconut water. Vita Coco, coconut water. While waiting for the disappointment to my taste buds of a mushroom sandwich to be made, I perused the refrigerator and had time to check expiration dates of my favorite coconut water. Turns out the first one I selected expired the week before. Funny enough the second, third, fourth, fifth and sixth were also expired. I brought this to the attention of the cashier. She was pleasant enough. I felt good about myself, as I spared 6 of my fellow humans from expired coconut water. I returned the following day to give the "chef"/"kitchen" the opportunity to redeem themselves. I'm an optimist. Again, time to peruse the refrigerator. I'm a creature of habit. Lo and behold, Vita Coco coconut water, now expired a week AND a day neatly stacked for my drinking pleasure. I was so sad. Soul sickeningly sad. I wouldn't bother going here for anything other than coffee and a bagel. After debating for 40 minutes with my boyfriend about where to get breakfast/lunch, we finally decided just to go here and get bagels. Of course, if it's after noon, this place is almost always out of bagels. I was so hungry I was starting to get testy, so I decided against my better judgement to try one of the sandwiches when I noticed they added a French Dip sandwich. I could have sworn the description said something like "thinly sliced roast beef, melted swiss cheese, caramelized onions and au jus." I asked for it without onions, get home and open my sandwich to find a sandwich that's 50% onions, with SEITAN, some cheese and a mayo-based sauce on some kind of 90-grain bread. I don't mind seitan, but make it clear that you're serving seitan, don't call it roast beef. It's neither roast beef, nor thinly sliced. I don't even think it was under a "vegan/vegetarian" header, I think it was just on a sign that talked about new sandwiches. I didn't get any au jus, and there was no mention of mayo in the description at all (and I hate mayo). If you are vegan or vegetarian, there are way better options in the city and even in the neighborhood. I won't bother with the hipster hating like so many others have done in this thread as I do not believe that this is ultimate the source of their problem. Sure the people who work there are likely rude/crude entitled newbies to BK, but ultimately it is their business model that I take issue with. Imagine this: Take all of your favorite foods/ingredients and prepare them to be bland and ordinary. Really, I have sampled everything from the lunch menu to the baked goods, and it all is missing something...like flavor/love to begin with. A word of advice to all those who are experimenting with "healthy" vegan and vegetarian diets from a lifetime veggie: vegetarian and vegan foods cooked well should be both delicious and affordable! The so called "standard" set by this place on both counts is insulting. I saw another unsatisfied costumer suggesting that you try the local Polish cuisine, and I want to second that emotion!! Back to the business model of taking cheap and flavorless foods and charging absorbent prices for it. Try this out: go to some of the surrounding business around the (well-below brooklyn) Standard before you spend your hard-earned money there. Compare those prices with those demanded by the Standard. Now observe the feeling of anger and disappointment that begins in your stomach and works it's way up to your brain. If your like me, it makes you feel sick every time you pass the joint, maybe on average 3/4 times a day! Really, I feel like starting a petition! Get these guys out of our neighborhood!! Example: the legendary StumpTown coffee can be purchased for 13$ at Variety Coffee just two blocks away from the Standard. Buy it at the Standard and it costs 15?? I feel insulted to the point where I am considering contacting StumpTown about this as I don't think they deserve to carry the brand! One star for the fact that they attempt to carry healthy foods, minus four for the preparation and pricing of that food. Unless your spending your mommies hard-earned retirement money, and are fine with absorbent priced poorly prepared foods, skip this place. Walking into the store and making an order is an ok experience. Both times I have attempted delivery (approximately 300 yards door to door) it has taken 50-70 minutes. Last night they changed my order twice due to being out of most of the ingredients for all of their listed sandwiches.
