Back in college, a friend of mine used to make a homemade savory version with jalapeno, cheese, and sausage. And, while I had never seen or heard of a kolache prior to my time as a co-ed, I quickly fell hard for these historically Czechoslovakian treats. Suffice to say, it was "love at first bite." In paying tribute to the many Texas expats in my Mexican food Meetup group (www.Meetup.com/Manzana), I decided to host July's monthly get-together at Brooklyn Kolache Co. Flavors range from from the savory, such as bacon, egg, and cheese, to sweet, like lemon curd. Of those that I sampled, my favorite kolache was, without a doubt, the pimento cheese. Its warm and squishy exterior reminded me of a crazy cross-breed of a brioche bun and a potato roll. With density. This gave way to a creamy interior that was laced with cheddar cheese nibs and the slightest hint of spice. Dynamite! Although it's a bit of a hike from Manhattan, I would definitely consider Brooklyn Kolache Co. to be "destination worthy." As an added bonus, the venue boasts an intimate outdoor space for al-fresco dining. NYC weather permitting, of course. :) read more

These pastries were nothing like the kolaches I'v had in Chicago and Houston. They were very doughy but fillings were tasty. I tried lemon, berry & cheese and pecan. I got there when they were closing so pricing was 2 for 1. No savory options available. Not sure I will go back though. read more

So I was researching places to try out in my neighborhood and this place popped up on Yelp. I live 2 blocks away from this small hidden gem and I'm just know finding out about it. I stopped by today with my dad to pick up some of these delicious looking pastries. It was actually my first time trying out a kolache and it was delicious! I tried the strawberry and sweet cheese and it was amazing. Now for everyone that has been complaining about the prices, you honestly get what you pay for. After speaking with the employee there, she mentioned that they were baked daily which is why they are so amazing. I highly recommend this place to everyone. YOU MUST TRY IT AT LEAST ONCE! :) I will be returning soon. Next time I'll grab a cup of coffee with my kolache :) read more

Thank you for bringing kolaches to NYC! The kolaches aren't quite as good as the ones I've had in Texas, but I quite like them nonetheless. The variety of savory and sweet kolaches here is awesome. I was a kolache virgin until last week, but after my visit to Brooklyn Kolache I might be an addict! I had the egg and chorizo kolache and then went back for a sweet cheese. I had to refrain from getting two more- they were OUTSTANDING. I also had a cappuccino which was very good. But, as a mom in the neighborhood, what I really appreciate are the: a) huge back room that is occasionally converted into a space for kids classes- we signed up for Music for Aardvarks on Mondays this summer! b) space to park strollers so they are not obnoxiously hogging up the real estate c) lovely back garden That's not to say that this is a "kid place" because there is room enough to quietly enjoy a child-free coffee and kolache... which I will be doing as soon as I get a free afternoon! read more

Great coffee shop overall. The staff is always friendly and welcoming and I never feel that snooty vibe that I get in a lot of similar type places. Brooklyn has become increasingly pretentious in my opinion - and nowhere is this more obvious than in many new coffee shops that have sprung up- but this place is a reminder of how sweet it can still be- literally and figuratively. read more

As a native Texan, I grew up eating kolaches from various breakfast establishments growing up. When I moved to NYC almost 10 years ago, I couldn't believe there was no kolache shop in the city or any of the boroughs. Finally, BKC opened up a few years ago. It's a bit of a hike if you don't have a car or live near the G train, but worth the trip. These kolaches are more dense than the ones in TX, but they are still delicious. They are baked fresh daily and the good ones run out quickly. I recommend the sausage, cheese, and jalapeno for savory and the blueberry cheese for sweet. read more

When a new coffee shop opens 2 blocks from my house, you can bet I'm going to be excited. And when i find out said coffee shop sells these amazingly delicious things called "Kolache"--pastry dough stuffed with tasty things like eggs and jalapenos or sweet cheese and blueberry--you can bet I'm going to be doubly excited. Yummy. Cute and quirky spot. Got the pecan and sweet cream cheese with berries one and large tea totaled $9.50. Does take cash and credit cards. Really hip spot. Small place, wouldn't meet a group of ppl here. But cute to go to with maybe one other person. Has a counter with stools on the outside. Didn't get a chance to see the back eating area. me & my boy came here on a saturday morning to feed our hangovers, it was cozy and there was a long line but the line moved fast and there was plenty of space to sit even with the usual bespectacled dillholes loitering on their laptops we each got 2 kolaches bc we don't care about how we appear to others or about our own terrible gluten farts. he got jalapeno/sausage and peanut butter/banana. i got spinach/feta and meyer lemon everything was delicious, not outrageously expensive since it's new york and u already know ur gonna pay at least $3 for any pastry. the spot was great for chilling in and we saw a brussels griffon puppy while we were eating, a fine & benevolent omen read more

I can't even tell you how excited I was to learn about this place. I can't believe I have spent the past two years kolache-less in NYC. My family is from West, Texas where the infamous Czech Stop is and I grew up on these things. While BK is not exactly Czech Stop, it is a phenomenal replacement since I don't make it back to Texas very often. I of course had the jalapeno, sausage, and cheese kolache. Literally just came right out of the oven. I made it a rule that I can only go get a kolache every 5 gym trips, so I will make sure to go work out often! read more

Honestly, best iced coffee I've had in Brooklyn. Not only are kolaches the greatest breakfast discovery I've made in the last decade, but this establishment also boasts some of the friendliest, most approachable baristas in the borough. The patio is cozy without being too cramped, and the main seating area is perfect for getting work done or chatting with friends. They've also started hosting a regular open mic night that features local artists, from musicians to spoken word poets to visual artists. Never had kolaches before, but I'm so glad I dropped in here to try them. The buns are sweet like my mother-in-law's egg bread, and they're filled with simple ingredients like cheese and sausage or egg and jalapeño. My three-year-old ate a whole one by himself - they were that good and that simple. Kudos also to the barista for excellent recommendations to help us continue our food tour. read more

I spent a good three hours chilling here the other day enjoying Kolache. The Kolache is good--they make the dough fresh every day. I tried the jalapeno and cheese kolache and a chai tea with. The chai tea wasn't great, I've definitely had better, especially in Brooklyn. I liked the Kolache, but didn't think it was anything to write home about and not something worth returning for. The environment was ok. The chairs weren't very comfortable, especially for a coffee-esq shop. Again, a good place to try, I just wouldn't put it on my list of places to return to. read more
