Cold rainy day and what could be more welcoming than a delicious coffee with oat milk at the charming Brooklyn Kolache. I also tried the cherry cheese pastry which reminded me of one I had visiting relatives in Slovakia. The pastry was chewy/bready, the cherries tart and the cheese creamy in all the best proportions The orange twist roll also didn't disappoint. Serves hot at your request this cutie packs an unexpected punch. Biting into it your face is bathed in a warm orange scented steam cloud due to the orange zest glaze that really doesn't look like it can pack that much sweet zestiness into each bite. Inside seating is limited to 3 counter seats and today a groovy hipster was giving a tarot reading to a young woman who was lamenting why can't she just date men AND women. I say any man or woman she brings here will be weak in the knees at the first bite of pastry. Outside is a small patio open to the street but defined by ironwork with a black and white floor making the space much more cozy than most sidewalk offerings. First off, petitioning for a Queens location! Brooklyn Kolache is in Brooklyn and now Manhattan so obviously next up is Queens right...right?? Fingers crossed! After moving to NYC from ATX, I have missed my kolache fix and BK surely filled that pastry sized hole in my heart. Whenever I am here or convince a friend who lives by to pickup an order for me, I stock up. My absolute favorite is the sausage jalapeño cheese kolache so I get 2-3 of those. I also try various other savory kolaches including their egg & cheese varities. They have vegetarian options as well. As for the sweet kolaches, I always get the blueberry as well as the lemon and try others like the cherry. I just spotted s'mores on their menu so now I need to try that one because I love s'mores. It's not often that I am able to try their coffee drinks but most recently I finally was able to try their ube latte which I ordered hot. I love anything ube and this latte hit the spot. I've been to Brooklyn Kolache a few times for Too Good To Go orders (which I do highly recommend but I'll get into that later) but this was my first time coming here as a regular customer. A friend and I were hanging out and wanted to go somewhere so I suggested Brooklyn Kolache since it was close to campus and I had enjoyed the pastries that I had had from there prior. The customer service was lovely as always and the vibes were chill and quiet, soft music coming from what I think was a radio behind the counter. In the back of the cafe there is a lovely little seating area that wasn't crowded at all with dim lighting. The atmosphere was chill and a little sleepy but I imagine this would be a lovely place to come work or write for an hour or two. The pastries were good as expected but my friend and I both agreed that the coffee based drinks did not have the coffee taste or kick that we wanted. They were instead overpoweringly milk heavy. A pastry and 12oz drink ran me $10.62 which is not bad for a little outing. The employee working also warmed up our pastries for us which was pleasant. In addition to the back seating room there is also a bar counter across from the sales counter and a front and back patio that seem like an ideal place to spend a warm day (alas, it was way too chilly and windy yesterday.) Now- onto my Too Good To Go experiences here! I've gotten Too Good To Go bags from here 4 times now and each time has been lovely. The friendly employee behind the counter will ask you if you want sweet or savory pastries (I always ask for a mix of both) and will quickly bag them up for you and you will be on your way. You get about 8 baked goods in the bag and they keep well in the fridge for about 3 to 4 days afterwards. I always recommend popping them in your microwave for about 20 second when you're ready to eat as they are better warm! read more

I am torn writing this review. The first time we ordered from this location, the Kolaches were fresh and warm. The second time, we ordered the Hattie B's Hot Chicken Kolache. I was super excited because that's my favorite restaurant in Tennessee! The Kolaches came super cold and we had to reheat them. Inside, I had expected and quite honestly yearned for our fried chicken goodness from Hattie B's and when we cut them open, we were saddened to find Chicken sausage (sans Fried Chicken) with only a very light dressing of that amazing Hattie B's spice. I probably wouldn't have spent the $15 on two of these. The ube latte was super super sweet. After we added oat milk, it helped immensely. read more

If you're from Texas, you know what a kolache is, and if you're from Texas but not living there currently, you miss them terribly! That would be me. Every time my family comes to visit me in CT, they know they have to bring at least two dozen along with them. They're wonderful and it's horrible to not be able to go to the local donut shop to grab a few on a Saturday morning. What is a kolache you ask? A quick google search reveals "It's a hearty breakfast pastry found at most donut shops around the great state of Texas. They are made with a light, fluffy yeast dough that surrounds a sausage. Typically cheese and jalapeno are included. These pastries came to Texas by way of Czech immigrants." Historically they contained various fruit fillings, but Texans added savory sausage, cheese and jalapeños and in my opinion, those are the best. But they are, alas, unavailable in Connecticut and New York. Until Brooklyn Kolache came along! I always jokingly say that if you can't find it in New York, you don't need it. So my family called me out on that one day and I had to look to see if New York had kolaches anywhere. Imagine my delight when I discovered them available in Brooklyn! This great little place has become a necessary stop after almost every trip to LGA or JFK. It's far for us, but worth the drive! The owner is Texan and her kolaches are wonderful. They are a bit pricey at $4.50 each, but when you're homesick, it's nice to know you can get them at all. If you're ever in Brooklyn, go try a Texan/Czech kolache. You'll be hooked too.... read more

I've had my share of kolaches all over the country and grew up in an area in the midwest where they're common. They're good here, and I don't mind at all the twist they're doing. So while they're pretty tasty, there are things here that were a bit of a turnoff. I arrived at opening and ordered a feta & spinach kolache and a black coffee and an espresso to start, both in paper containers with lids. All I had to do was touch the coffee container to know something was grossly wrong. How can you be holding a paper cup, pour a black coffee and not notice it isn't even warm? I went outside, sat and opened it and it was totally room temperature joe. Whut??? I went back inside and asked and got kind of a chuckle and "oops," and it was replaced. To be fair, the espresso was fine. The black coffee, the hot version, was good, not great. And outside... yes, Brooklyn is a dirty city and trash gets on sidewalks, but this was a festival of broken and unbroken glass bottles, a container of anti-freeze and other assorted trash and more 3 feet from the outdoor dining space. Several people walking by stopped and actually commented like, "wow, what's going on here?" I responded, "guess there was a party we all missed." Could have been an oversight on the business owner's part I suppose, but that evening and even the next morning, still there. If you own a restaurant or bar, it's a good idea to hose off the trash and vomit before you open. Interesting food, interesting and unique offering for Brooklyn, but I won't be back. read more

I was there around 1:30 and they were sold out of almost all of their sweet as well as their savory pastries. I had a sweet cheese and blueberry kolache. I liked that it wasn't overly sweet. The pastry was pretty light. I had a macchiato with the pastry. I thought it paired well. I'm not a coffee expert but I liked it quite a bit.
