Picked up lunch at Brooklyn Bread Cafe on Sunday afternoon. This shop is all about the bread, so make sure to select the specialty roll with whatever you order. Quality: Brooklyn Bread Cafe is a bakery and sandwich shop located in Brooklyn. On Sunday afternoon we ordered two sandwiches. The first was the Ii Paderino Hero, an Italian sub stuffed with prosciutto, hot soppressata, provolone, mozzarella, balsamic, olive oil, and mesclun. I could have used a bit more balsamic and maybe some peppers for some hot and sweet, but still a delicious sandwich. Where I missed out on that sandwich however was by not going with an Artesian Roll. Because even though the Apple Crudo with prosciutto, brie, apple, arugula, olive oil, and balsamic was not as fun, the bread itself lifted the sandwich up. Quantity: The Hero is significantly larger, but you don't want to miss out on the Artesian Roll. Value: $13 for the Ii Padreino Hero. $9 for the Apple Crudo Artesian Roll. Ambiance: Brooklyn Bread Cafe is located in the Carroll Gardens area of Brooklyn. In a quaint residential area, it sits on the main street. The shop is quite big with the large ordering area and seating both inside and out. Unfortunately with COVID, it was a grab and go situation, but I easily could imagine enjoying a coffee and a sandwich sitting in the outdoor garden area. Crowd: Always a flow of people, but never too busy. A couple of folks ordering take-out during my visit. Service: Fast and friendly service. One of the best cafes in Brooklyn. The fresh bread is delicious and tasty to eat. I love the brickoven flat bread and the sesame hero bread taste so good! There's something about fresh bread that is so delicious. I recommend the chicken parm on the sesame hero, you can not go wrong with that. Small cafe, so better to carry out or get there early because there's only a few seats. They also have some pretty good pastries like muffins and cookies that are good. We used to be regulars at the previous location down the block but, after giving it several chances, we're sorry to say that the new joint isn't cutting it. First of all, their menu is way too massive (always a red flag) leading to subpar quality in many of their items (we ordered a blueberry muffin today that was stale and tasted like jalapeño). The place always feels chaotic leading to ludicrous wait times, stressed out staff, and wrong orders. Prices have increased while quality has either remained stagnant or worsened. What was once a fun local place to go on a Sunday morning for a bagel and a coffee has become a unpleasant weekend tradition that we might have to rethink. As a fan of the first BK Bread on Court Street, I was excited about a larger location even closer to my apt. I've been to the new space about 10 times since they've opened. Literally EVERY time my order was incorrect. If you're eating there it's not a big deal (besides having to wait forever) the staff will fix it BUT when getting takeout and realizing the order is wrong once you already paid extra for something is extremely frustrating. This morning I ordered the same exact sandwich for 4 people. 2 of the sandwiches were correct and 2 were wrong. Also, the price for each sandwich was different..not sure how that happens? At first, I chalked it up to a new location working out the kinks but unfortunately it doesn't look like it's getting any better. Bummer!! read more

Terrible service. Before they opened their new location, they were phenomenal; afterwards, they just stopped caring. Whether it's forgetting to put ketchup on a sandwich, toasting the roll when we say "not toasted" , or just throwing loose cookies in a bag of other items, you can count on this restaurant to mess up your order. Myself and my coworkers have given them many chances but they insist on making every visit a terrible experience. Aside from the order mishaps, their service is just piss poor & the girl with the hairnet that works in the mornings...terrible. She's the one that made this acai bowl, which is actually just a smooth in a bowl- all she did was blend fruit and pour. Horrible. OH! & she forgot to give me a spoon, since they always have to forget something. I go back to get the spoon & ALL the spoons were dusty. What in God's name goes on in there? First time we went we got rolls when we asked for hero's. Okay, no big deal. Second time we called ahead asking again for hero's. When the order was handed off, again it was rolls. We're pretty easy going, so once again shrugged it off, but when I opened the sandwiches they weren't even what was ordered. Meh. Food was fine, but the wait time, and staff behind the counter leave a lot to be desired. Waited probably twice as long as we should have for a very basic order, and had to confirm the order 4x, even after we had paid up. Not the most customer friendly either back there; non-attentive to people waiting in line, can't take a basic order, the list goes on... Inside could be kept a little cleaner also; some dirty tables, napkins on the floor, chairs not pushed in...basic things that go a long way, especially at a place that serves food. Their outside area is nice though, if you can get a seat. All in all, food was good when we eventually got it, but not sure if it's worth the effort. Unfortunately not too many good options in the area when it comes to bagels, breakfast sandwiches, etc., but I may just stick with my coffee and muffin from Mazzola. Brooklyn Bread is great when they want to be. I've ordered from them many times using Uber Eats, however, the past three orders have been inedible. I order the same sandwich every time--Il Padrino. The past three times, I've been delivered something that is definitely not even close to that. I'm not even sure if what they've delivered is actually on the menu. It looks like something with roast beef and maybe Russian Dressing. Regardless, it's not what I ordered or paid for. It's really disappointing. Even though Uber Eats will give me a refund, I still don't have lunch. On top of that, they can't seem to follow instructions such as what type of bread you'd like and whether it should be toasted. Out of the many times that my husband and I have ordered here--I think that we've gotten our actual, correct order twice. After reading through some of these more recent reviews, I'm sure that the manager will have a snarky response to this and blame either me or Uber Eats. Perhaps it's an issue with Uber Eats, however, it's still the restaurant's responsibility if the system isn't working as it should be. It's no longer worth the gamble with Brooklyn Bread. I will start this off by saying that I love their Park Slope location and go there for sandwiches and bagels pretty often. This was the first time I stopped into this Carrol Gardens one. It was a hot day, I was driving by and wanted a coffee. The place is pretty small and kind of shabby looking. The coffee was okay. But the reason for the one star? I saw at least three cockroaches crawling around while I was there! Two of which were behind the glass display case where the cookies are and one on the sign above the counter! It was really gross. And really, if I managed to spot three in the middle of the day out in the open like that.... I can just imagine what else there was around. read more

Their bagel is more of bread with identity crisis. It is round ciabatta with a hole in the middle. I would name it Bagelbatta or Ciabagel. At least it sounds more original and people wouldn't put the bread in the bagel category and try to judge in bagel content. The taste and texture of Bagelbatta or Ciabagel is good. It is perfect for any type of sandwiches.Let's face it, real bagel can be overwhelming once you jam in all these ingredients to turn it into a sandwich, which I happen to like. read more

This is our local bagel joint. We love their bagels and their sandwiches. The staff is always friendly. My son also loves their black and white cookies. Note that it is cash only. At peak hours you will have to wait a little bit but they are soon moving to a larger space a block away which will hopefully alleviate that concern. read more

I recently moved to Carroll Gardens and have been testing out all the local coffee shops. Brooklyn Bread is by far my favorite - the prices, atmosphere, location and staff are all ideal. Compared to the overpriced and rather pretentious Carroll Street Grocers and unfriendly but affordable D'amico, I like Brooklyn Bread best. Their muffins are delicious and only $2.50, and they serve D'amico Coffee, which is way better than Brooklyn Brew coffee, IMO. The staff are all helpful and Spanish-speaking, which is nice. Their bathroom is also good. The only downside I would say, is that there aren't any outlets so it's not that equipped for long-time studying. But it's quieter than some of the other coffee shops on off-hours if you're hoping to get some work done. Love Brooklyn Bread! read more

The only reason to go Brooklyn Bread is to order something with BREAD. The sandwiches are the real winners here. They are sick. They use great ingredients, make excellent bread, and get the proportions right. Breakfast OR lunch. Atmosphere is open and nice. The staff are hella cool and full of little bits of history. Make sure you check out the photos on the walls. Most are from Italy and they are pretty damn good shots. The only letdown, and this is a serious one, is that the coffee sucks. It _can_ be good, but it can also be garbage. I've no idea why you can't get really good coffee in this area, but I wish almost every day that Brooklyn Bread would take care of things and get the brewing sorted out. Great food, friendly service. A new personal favorite in Carroll Gardens. You'll pay a bit more than your average deli or bakery, but it's worth every penny. You can smell the bread before you walk in, their bagels are crispy on the outside and sweet and soft on the inside, they use a lot of flour to make their bread, but it's delicious. Pastries are ok, not bad. However, if you're looking for something starchy with a coffee come here. I like the Il Padreino sandwich, as well as their Italian Tuna. My 10 year old Brooklyn-raised daughter says "best bagel ever." It is lighter than the traditional bagel, yes, but that doesn't necessarily make it wrong - just different. It won't replace Bagel Delite in Park Slope as my fave for traditional bagels but Ok for a change-up. Having read this so far, my daughter says that I must quote her: "The bagels are great, but there's flies." (She dropped her original 5 star review for that. This lovely little cafe is cozy and comfortable.I had the pleasure of having one of their amazing italian sandwiches....fresh mozzarella,capricolla and roasted peppers all on fine Italian bread (which is made from scratch in house)...I will always go back just for that...not to mention the fantastic desserts...the pastry chef must be Straight from the old country,because he knows what Italian pastries and cookies are all about. They're BACK! Since relocating and reopening a block away from their original location of some 15 years they are back in the groove. After going thru some normal and expected growing pains over the past month of operating in a new space all seems to be normal. The staff is no longer overwhelmed and can now focus more on the service we are all used to. Their new MUCH expanded menu gives so many delicious options it's hard to choose. From the breakfast specials to the uncommon sandwich combinations and now even dinner choices. This place is hard not to frequent. Oh and have you checked out their outside space? This place used to be pretty good, and now it pretty much just sucks. The bread/bagels are still fantastic, but the guys behind the counter are really slacking. The last few sandwiches I've gotten here have been very poorly made. The staff in general is inattentive and never seems to really have a grasp of the menu or prices. They appear to have a very high turnover rate. I will say that they have some pretty interesting sandwiches on the menu, but the bad preparation and ingredients undermines what would be some excellent options. The Tuna Bella used to be the greatest tune melt on earth, but at this point I wouldn't even recommend it. Also, the coffee is horrible.
