I was confused about the warm potato salad which I didn't recognize what it was at first. I thought it was mashed potatoes. Usually, Germans have bacon and a bit of vinegar mixed in with it. I also didn't recognize the Bratkartoffeln (fried potatoes). This was more like big cubed hash browns. Germans slice the potatoes and add bacon and onions with it. I am German and I think the food was German inspired but not authentic. Overall: what a vibe! Never been to Germany but this spot has some classics! Obviously can't pronounce half the dishes, but the beers and grub are can't miss. Food: start off with a classic pretzel and dip in the mustard or cheese. It ain't your normal Auntie Anne's as it has that chewiness typical of pretzel that's been freshly made. The Spaetzle is incredibly interesting as it's basically poutine disguised as potato pasta noodles. It's still pretty delicious as it has that gooey cheesy bacon mix with a mix of some curds? The Schnitzel is a whopping pork cutlet that has a really flavorful mushroom bechamel like sauce. The pork itself isn't too dry and it's done pretty thinly so the fry is incredibly crisp. It also comes with two huge scoops of potatoes. Dijon mustard really brings out the best in the potato. Drinks: huge range of beers and their Weihenstaphen comes in three different boot sizes! Love a fun decorated restaurant and this was exactly that! It was a whole woodsy German pub feel that my friends and I were so craving one particular weekday! Stopped by here after axe-throwing across the street and am so glad I finally got around to trying this spot! It's a cute German bar/biergarten and restaurant with a fun atmosphere and great food. I definitely won't claim to be an expert on German food, but we were all super happy with our experience, and I would definitely visit again. We started with the pretzel and haus sausage appetizers. The best part of the pretzel was the sauces, but the sausage was sooo tasty. The spicy mustard served with both was spot on - I would buy this stuff by the jar if they were selling it. For entrees, everyone opted for either the Brondog, Bronburger, or the Schnitzel. The schnitzel was my personal favorite, it was cooked perfectly with the creamiest mushroom sauce. (I later learned that Bronwyn's chef won an episode of Beat Bobby Flay with this dish a while back, pretty cool!) The Brondog is another famous dish, it was featured on the Travel Channel as one of America's best hot dogs, and it certainly didn't disappoint. As you can guess, everything here is pretty heavy and the entrees are served with a mountain of potatoes--definitely come hungry. The prices are a bit high, but you get what you pay for. There's a nice beer and wine selection, and all the fun European decor and outdoor seating are the icing on the cake. read more

I really wanted to like this place but was sorely disappointed by both the food and by the mandatory 20% applied to the bill. Truly horrendous food, as someone who lived In Germany I was horrified by their "takes" on items all the way down to the schnitzel with a gross creamy sauce all over it that you would never actually get in Germany. The pretzel also gave off out of the package/frozen food vibes and the mustard it came with had so much horseradish it practically maced my throat on the way down. A few side notes as well, the decor is dusty and unkempt and does not lean towards a clean environment at ALL and I had to have my husband go and un prop the bathroom door that for some reason was open and airing out right next to the table the bartender had us sit at. I could literally see the toilet from my seat. My husband got the burger and it was also just very very bad. I'm convinced that there is no real chef at this spot and they most certainly wouldn't serve such expensive low quality food. For my husband to barely touch his plate and leave means it was really bad.... We went next door to June Bug to try and save our horrendous dinner night and that place has excellent cocktails and food. So so so disappointing to have wasted any time or money here. They should be embarrassed they charge people and even include a service charge (no surprise) for what they are serving. read more

However, the owner and her staff took great care of us and got us a table as soon as they could. The place looked like an authentic German pub with rustic wooden tables and chairs, an awesome bar and servers in traditional German wardrobe. Really put you in a German mood. I've always heard good things about Bronwyn, so my partner and I were excited to try it out one Friday evening. We didn't come here with a reservation, but were still able to get a table immediately. After getting seated, the service was a bit slow, but we weren't in a rush so it didn't bother us too much. We ordered a pretzel to share and then our main dishes were the bratz dog and schnitzel. The pretzel arrived first, and it was everything I expected. The pretzel was soft and warm, paired perfectly with the tangy mustard sauce. It had the right amount of salt on it too, which I appreciated. However, the star of the show here was the schnitzel. Honestly I would come back here just for this. It was so crispy and flavorful, cooked to perfection and served alongside a delicious potato-based mash. The bratwurst was also very tasty (and they gave us a TON of delicious potatoes on the side) and left us completely full by the end of the meal. Came to Bronwyn for a friend's birthday dinner. The only reason for 3/5 is because of the food - the service and atmosphere were impeccable! We had a reservation but were a large group (12), so there did end up being a wait. Once we got situated, our server brought out pretzels for the table on the house - I'd definitely recommend the beer cheese that it comes with (also because I'm not a huge mustard fan), and honestly it was the highlight of the meal! As someone who has spent time in Vienna and Berlin, the food unfortunately didn't meet expectations. I was super excited and ended up being disappointed. The schnitzel was nicely breaded, thin, and fried, but could use more flavor (as well as the mushroom sauce), and I did not end up finishing it. We visited BRONWYN (I have no idea why they capitalize their whole name.) Friday because October calls for German food. I love German food and there aren't a lot of German restaurants around. I've been there before, but this was a wonderful visit. We started with the pretzel, big soft and covered with course salt. It comes with a very nice horseradish mustard, spicy but not overwhelming. For an up charge you can also get beer cheese, but I greatly prefer the mustard. They were celebrating Oktoberfest, but I'm not much of a beer drinker, so I started with a cocktail. They have a variation on a Negroni called Czech Yourself, made with Czech fernet, gin, and Campari. Although I'm mostly Irish-German, I do have some Czech ancestry and as you well know I'm a gin guy, so I had to try it. Very nice, I actually preferred it it to the traditional Negroni. After that I had a couple glasses of Austrian Grüner Veltliner. I'm not Austrian. For dinner we split the Spätzle and the Schnitzel. The spätzle is larger than I'm used to but nicely browned and served with spinach and onions. You can add a sausage to it if you like. We added a bratwurst. This dish is delicious but huge. I took some home, and it heats up nicely in a frying pan the next day.The schnitzel was also excellent. It is topped with a mushroom cream sauce and served with warm, bacony potato salad. I would get both of these dishes again with no hesitation. I'd even get the spätzle to go because it reheats so well. For dessert, we had the Apflestrudel, apples and golden raisins stuffed into a pastry and topped with buttermilk whipped cream. With it, I had a shot of Jäegermeister, which I didn't shoot, I sipped. The staff was dressed in traditional German attire and the small space was decorated for Oktoberfest. There aren't many seats and it's crowded, but definitely charming. The service was very friendly and the atmosphere was casual. It was a relaxing feast. Union Square is about the worst place to park, but once you find a spot everything is great! They gave us the potato pancake by mistake and we got to keep it despite my partner ordering the pierogi which was nice of them, and both of the other appetizers were great. You can't go wrong with either! The burger was great. I loved the potatoes it came with too - perfectly crispy and flavorful. I was so satisfied with this dish and I'd order it again without hesitation. The schnitzel as well tasted fantastic, the portion size of the dish itself though was definitely less than the burger. For dessert, I found my chocolate mousse to be very rich ( borderline overly so ) but it still tasted great. Due to how full I was from everything else though, it was hard to finish. The apple cake was much lighter and I would've preferred that honestly, but if you love chocolate a lot, the mousse is delicious. Overall I'd love to come back and try more of their menu. In Boston for the weekend and my daughter suggested we try this German restaurant that was across the street from the axe throwing venue we went to. The menu is not as extensive as the German restaurant I frequent in Columbia, but the food is well prepared and very tasty. The interior of the restaurant is decorated with authentic German decor and items. The chairs and table seemed very authentic amd the chairs were very comfortable. I liked the pierogi better than the potato pancake but both were good. I had never had a deep fried pierogi and it was really yummy! For the main course my husband got the brew hot dog that is basically a chili cheese dog with mustard and ketchup and he said it was very flavorful and the potatoes that came with it were nice and crispy! I had the schnitzel and it was cooked perfectly. Our server was nice enough to let me sub the spatzel for the potato salad. The spatzel was soooooooo good!
