We came in on a Tuesday morning. The place is always a bit busy which is probably a good sign. We were sat immediately. Service was friendly. We ordered chiliquilas and oatmeal. Food came out in a reasonable amount of time. The chiliquilas was a little cold but it looked pretty and tasted p good. My wife ordered it without meat because she wasn't used to seeing chiliquilas with meat. It's a bit pricey for simple breakfast items but the place was clean service was friendly and they even have some vegan and vegetarian options so I thought it was pretty nice. read more

I've been to a few Broken Yolk locations over the years and recently was invited to the Santee location for a Yelp event. During the event, I was able to meet the owners and quite a few of their staff. The whole team was warm welcoming and so hospitable. The food was great too. That prompted me to visit again just a couple days later. Looked to be a bit of a wait as we pulled up. Once inside, we put our name on the list and we're advised it would be about 15 minutes for our table. Not too bad since there seemed to be about 12-15 people waiting ahead of us. Once we were seated, our server soon came by to check in on us. Billy, one of the owners, asked if we wanted something to drink. We opted for a mimosa and Bloody Mary, which came out in no time. The menu is fairly extensive with some great options for breakfast, brunch or lunch. We opted for the chilaquiles and a Greek salad with grilled chicken. The chilaquiles were ordered with both red and green sauce. Both had such a unique flavor with just a touch of heat. The salad with huge with loads of fresh veggies. Roy, the other owner was constantly making rounds throughout the restaurant and checking in with each table making sure everything was perfect. When he came by our table, we advised that my eggs were over hard and not over medium as we had ordered. He immediately went to the kitchen and within two minutes had a couple fried eggs, cooked perfectly. Essentially, if somethings not right, they'll make it so that it is. Upon entering until you leave, you're treated like family. That's the type of service that really makes you want to keep coming back for more. Wife and I are here probably every week for brunch. It can get pretty crowded on the weekend, but we always sit at the bar with Emily and Angel who are literally the best bar team ever. First off - since this place is poppin, I highly suggest joining their Yelp Waitlist. We were given a 30-50min wait time but luckily because of the app, we were able to run an errand and get here exactly when our number was up. It only took 30min! I was a little hesitant to try this BY location since I've had some bad luck at the PB and Mission Valley locations, but since it's in our neighborhood this time - we had to give it a try. If you like loud and fast breakfasts aimed at the much much younger crowd, this place is the place to go. They turn the music up extremely loud - which is kind of obnoxious but it's fun in its own way. It's almost impossible to have a conversation with whomever you came here with. But the servers are on point with their speed and attentiveness. Maria was awesome! Even the bussers has tables cleaned within seconds of someone leaving. They really are the backbone of this restaurant. Thank you so much for making sure we had a clean table and ensuring we weren't overloaded with unnecessary trash. We ordered the Waffle Sandwich with extra crispy hashbrowns and the Ranchero Skillet with eggs over easy. My partner ordered the Bloody Maria.. received it 18min later and said it was okay, it had very minimal alcohol. So it is what it is. Not like he's trying to get toasted at 1pm. Food took 32 minutes to arrive to our table which was kind of mind blowing since our order was pretty simple... and it was terrible. My waffle sandwich was cold, hashbrowns were cold and not extra crispy. The ranchero skillet came with scalloped potatoes and not home fries? Ultimately I contacted the owner and had him remove my breakfast and remake it. He did inform us that the scalloped potatoes were indeed "home fries." I won't lie, his interaction with us was a little odd/off. It wasn't friendly in my opinion.. and very condescending.. but he did offer to correct the issue. It wasn't until a few minutes later that the people sitting across from us had told us the same thing - their food was extremely cold but they were just going to take it home and reheat it. They brought my replacement food out within 2min and it was exactly what it needed to be. The waffle didn't taste stale like the previous order. The cheese was melted. The eggs were warm. The hashbrowns were perfect. They were exactly what I had wanted and expected from this establishment... unfortunately it was something different than what I had previously tried at a BY establishment, so I was hoping to go into this review unbiased. Things kind of went downhill afterwards.... My partner looked at the menu again and noticed the home fries were cubed in the photo and not scalloped. So we asked the owner to come speak to us again just for clarification. The owner felt inclined to bring his son and then got into an argument with my partner, not sure why this occurred but it felt like an intimidation factor. He initially asked us if we had ever been to a broken yolk, as if we were expected to know the dishes. So my partner asked the owner the same question back, since we both didn't know how to take the question.... The owner then told my partner to leave without paying the bill and started saying something about "you're not going to talk to me like this in front of my son" (as if we knew he was the owners son?). He made sure to tell us "be sure to leave that nasty Yelp review".... They had already taken his card.. so we couldn't go anywhere. The owner basically kicked us out for questioning the potatoes... but gave us a free Belgian waffle coupon (which I ended up giving to another family). Overall, had our food been received as expected... we wouldn't have had a problem. But it snowballed and resulted in an unnecessary aggressive encounter. Maria, I'm sorry we were unable to leave a tip... the owner was acting pretty scary and threatening and made us leave before we could even sign the receipt. She did say that management had a problem with accountability and often put blame on others, so I can totally understand that now. I'm sure the owner will feel inclined to respond to this abhorrent experience with an invalidating and defensive review since he kept saying he expects us to leave a Yelp review so he could say what he needed to say in retort. In my opinion, if you're going to be an owner... you're going to need to be able to take criticism without responding passive aggressively. Even if you don't like it. If you can't, then it's best to just leave it to the manager and stay home. (Edit: so now we are being harassed by Reese and Luke within compliments who both state they were seated next to us - when photos and conversations with our boothmates state otherwise. My husband and I come here a couple times a month and we have always enjoyed the incredibly friendly, home town feel service and the delicious food. They have great options as someone who has food allergies. Emily and Angel are always so amazing when we get to sit at the bar. It's the closest we feel to going to a family meal. Welcome Broken Yolk to the Community of Santee! Broken Yolk put a lot of work into this location because the inside is quite remarkable. They definitely elevated the new standard for any new openings in the future. Modern and trendy yet inviting would be a good way to describe the decor. For breakfast, In had the Waffle Sandwich which came with "A Belgian waffle sandwich filled with scrambled eggs, cheddar cheese and applewood-smoked bacon" (Broken Yolk, 2022). You can have with a side of hash browns or fruit. I went with the hash browns for $12.85. The waffle sandwich was quite good. I the scrambled eggs were fluffy and lightly seasoned. I personally would seasoned them a bit more. The bacon was tasty and the sandwich came with a really good amount cheddar cheese. The waffle was good. It was soft and flavorful. It could of used a bit more crispiness on the outside for that nice crunch. The hash browns were plentiful with a light browning. Here too a little salt would of gone a lone way. Fortunately, salt and pepper is always available at the tables at the Broken Yolks. Perhaps, that's their intention. Allow the customer to season to taste. If so, it's all good. I got the pick two eggs Benedict, both of which came out borderline hard boiled, the sauce on the border Benedict had 0 flavor to it and just tasted like cilantro and jalapeño. The hash browns I couldn't eat after just one bite because of this odd potent chemical taste paired with soggy half cooked potato. We arrived here Saturday morning a little before 8. We were missing 2 in our party so we were waiting for them to arrive before we got seated. We weren't greeted for a bit and the family in front of us found their own table. Our waitress eventually came by and showed us to our seats on the patio. After the initial wait everything else was done. Our food was brought out in a timely matter and was delicious!! We ordered the mile high omelette, California omelette, and chicken fried steak. We all chose the blueberry muffin as our side and it was so good!! So soft and moist!! All 3 meals were big enough to share. Our waitress didn't come back and check on us but we didn't need anything. Everyone is friendly and they are truly interested in making your meal an all around great experience. 3. The food! The menu is expansive. So much to select from! I had the corned beef hash skillet. Wow! Yummy. My husband had the chilaquiles. Another big yum! The quality of the food is top notch. My parents had a Belgian waffle and a traditional egg breakfast. Both were so good. Some of the worst service I've ever had. We waited about 45 mins to be seated on a sat about 11:00am, understandable. Not so much for my 4yr old but no biggie. We we're sat w Maria. Strong start, she was super sweet. We asked for my friends bill for her drink right after we ordered it cause she didn't have time to stay since it took a long time to be seated. Server took a while to bring it. I had to waive her down to order my kid some food. She seemed bothered. Oh. My friend had to leave with out her bill which she ended up asking for it at the front. Oh. Food didn't take too long to come out. It was good (the reason I even gave 2 stars) Just a French toast sticks kids meal order. It was pretty good, so I don't want to ignore that. While I drank my gross michelada. The server never came over until we were almost done. She's not the one who brought the food out to us so we were never checked up on. Had to ask for my bill, she once again seemed bothered. Oh. Then brought me someone else's bill along with THEIR CREDIT CARD. Oh. I tried to wave her down as she walked past to tell her that it was not my bill and that she gave me someone else's credit card. Made eye contact and completely ignored me. Oh. Then she came over to collect my bill and I informed her. She gave me my bill I immediately went up to the front to pay cuz I didn't want to "bother" her again. Left no tip. Which I NEVER do. ever. This is my second visit. First visit was when they first opened waited an hour to be sat, waited an hour to order, waited an hour to get our food. When we did get our food, it was cold.
