It's been about three years since I moved to Alpine and let me tell you this place never dissapoints! The food is delicious and fresh, and their staff is super nice and knowledgeable! Took Dad and wife to breakfast this morning to Off the 8 Cafe. Dad had not been here before today. He was amazed. He had the pork chops and eggs and was pleased he could not finish he got so much food. The service was over the top. And the ambiance is very simple and enjoyable. We were traveling through and fortunately stumbled across the Off the 8 Cafe. From the moment we walked in, the atmosphere was so great. Every staff person was so friendly. The menu is great with lots of choices for everyone. We chose to sit inside, but they also have a lovely patio. My husband LOVED the extra large coffee cups I chose the Mae your own omelet and my husband had the chicken fried steak and eggs. Both of our meals were delicious. Sweet little tucked away cafe. Ordered the eggs Benedict and hashbrowns. The eggs Benedict was fantastic and the hasbrownz were not that great. But the service here is what made the whole experience special. Our server who was also running the front end of the cafe was a delight. This place is a gem! If you're a local, not-so-local, or just passing by on the 8 STOP here for a meal to remember. Awesome food, service and ambience. The menu is so varied and there are specials on the sandwich board as you enter. We really enjoyed eating out in the patio and our 65-lbs. Husky was even welcomed with a fresh bowl of water. The portions are huge, so leftovers are a given. Yummy coffee, hot or iced, Churros French toast, even your basic scrambled eggs with toast and fruit. FOOD: We had the Patty Melt. It was very good, though I was not thrilled with the French Fries. SERVICE: Very Good. We had a very friendly server, who was fast and efficient. AMBIANCE: Nice. The place was quiet, with two opposite facing televisions on a non-political station, so anyone seated could see (but not hear) the televisions. PRICE: Not Good. Our Patty Melts, which were basically cheeseburgers on slices from a loaf of bread, were $17.45 and only included French Fries. The the meals were very good, however what we received did not justify the price. A similar meal at, say In-N-Out, would cost under $10 per person, include a drink, and there would be no expectation of a tip, saving nearly half the cost. To add insult to this financial injury, they added a 3.00% "Credit card surcharge" of $1.13. So, for two burger and fries combination plates with water to drink, we were out the door for $45.73, including tax and tip. Just not worth it. read more

Both my husband and I had food that looked good but tasted so bad that I couldn't eat it. I ordered chicken fried steak, eggs, hash browns, and biscuit. It tasted like it was frozen. The hash browns were crispy but tasted very bland, the biscuit had a bad flavor and the gravy did too. The steak my husband had was supposed to be a New York steak but it wasn't. And it was so tough there was very little that wasn't fat or bone. I really was unhappy and my stomach is in pain now. read more

This is my new FAVORITE spot to eat!! The food is outstanding, the portions leave you full to the brim. The coffee is XXXXXcellent in huge mugs. Today I had Strawberry Salad that was just ... Cute little cafe with only booths and no extra chairs! 1 out of the 2 high chairs for the babies had a broken seat belt.. and we had 3 babies in our party. That was probably the only downside of this place. Food was good! Pancakes were delicious. I ordered the country fried steak (yummy) which came with hashbrowns and 3 eggs! I recommend it. Ok. I don't know if I can find the exact superlatives to describe this place. Super friendly and efficient service staff. Fresh, hot delicious food. I had the best French toast I've had in recent memory. Delicious patty sausage. Very reasonable prices and big portions. We all took something home. The service is very good, the tables are broken! The fan sounds and looks like it's about to fall on to the three legged table. Prices are very high to have broken tables and fans. The food is horrible, got the fruit crepes they have a melted liquid they call cream cheese they taste like raw flower lacking proper recipe and prep. For the area might be good because there are very few options but 1,000% not worth the $ and most is not edible. Even the bosquete and gravy lacks flavor. read more

Wonderful food! We all had something different at our table and everyone loved theirs and kept commenting on how good it was! I had chicken and waffles and it was outstanding , I try this meal all over the country and this is easily in the top three. Not what we expected from a little cafe in a strip mall. Cynthia the owner is nonstop! She is a perfect hostess and made sure everyone was happy. The Cafe is very clean and welcoming. I can't recommend this place enough! Came to Viejas Casino and resort and we were looking for a breakfast spot nearby. I found this spot on Yelp and it was only 8 minutes away. They were pretty busy when we got there but we got a table outside right away. The staff were friendly and helpful with suggestions. We had the Off The 8 skillet and it was good and filling. A True Hidden Treasure! One of the only places in the East County area that has CREPES! Beyond Delicious as well! A hometown feeling as soon as you walk in the door! Hubby had corn beef hash, 3 eggs over medium , hash browns & add biscuits & gravy. ( which the whites were perfect, a rarity in a restaurant!). I had oatmeal. The portions are huge. I shouldn't have ordered the oatmeal. I couldn't finish the oatmeal. We could have shared his meal & had plenty. We will know next time! Hubby said everything was excellent & tasty. What a great find! We enjoyed a delicious breakfast here after hiking in Descanso early in the morning. I got the eggs, Benedict with chorizo, and it was delicious. My husband got the skillet, lots of great flavors! We ordered the Red Velvet crêpes to go, and I took a bite while they were hot. Yum! We will definitely be back. I attempted to go to breakfast with my service dog and was told no big dogs. I informed that she was my service dog and was told there was only one table I could sit at, despite the restaurant being fairly empty. Staff and ownership need to be informed and treat people with disabilities more respectfully. I travel to the area frequently. Unfortunately I will find a different place for breakfast. read more

Tucked away in the corner of the first shopping center on Tavern road (right off the 8), their indoor seating/outdoor patio is a great place to stop after a bike ride, a hike, or just to grab a delicious breakfast or lunch! For a place that serves breakfast and lunch, it was odd that at 10 minutes before noon, we still could not order "lunch" items. but ok - pivot to breakfast. we placed drink orders and food. What came out was disappointing. we asked if the bottomless mimosas could have a little cranberry juice added. Server said not problem. What came out were cranberry mimosas, no orange juice in sight. when food came out, it left a lot to be desired. The avocado toast order was awful. plain white, grocery bread barely toasted with an avocado smash (container spread from the store or costco?) and dried grated parmesan cheese (like from the plastic container in the grocer) not as advertised and definitely not what one expects for this dish. The side of bacon was forgotten. The eggs benedict looked ok however the hollandaise sauce was barely existent and what was there was split. Making it barely edible. The other breakfast dishes were just ok. Biscuits and gravy looked good. lots of it and chunky. scrambled eggs and hashbrowns are hard to mess up. But for one person, the hashbrowns were pretty much cooked to a crisp and a lot of grease on the plate. that person left those to the bin. And had a hair on the plate. We had to ask for the bottomless mimosa to be refilled. The server took the glasses, and when they came back, one was orange, one was cranberry and THE GLASSES WERE REUSED! Unacceptable!! if the server didn't know, the bartender should know NOT to reuse glasses. Even if it is our own glasses, you don't reuse them. If you want music, average food, and drinks - this will be ok. The band was really good. The food experience was dreadful.

We live nearby and love going here. It is reasonably priced, always have amazing service and they are very family friendly. The breakfast is usually great. I have never had lunch there. Their pancakes are MASSIVE. The only reason this is four stars instead of five is because the breakfast potatoes are too big so they end up losing a lot of flavor and the gravy was separated (meaning chunks of flour and milk were still separate and not cooked or mixed together).
