Japanese Hambagu Steak Bowl
Mark M.

Brick Box Brewery: Tucson's Taproom Treasure with Heart, Hops, and Hearty Bowls If you find yourself meandering through downtown Tucson with a thirst for something bold and a belly begging for comfort food, Brick Box Brewery is your oasis. Once known as Thunder Canyon Brewery, this reimagined taproom hasn't just kept the soul--it's infused it with fresh energy, local flavor, and a whole lot of love in every pour. Food That Hugs Your Soul Let's talk about the Katsu House Katsudon Bowl--crispy pork cutlet nestled in a sweet-savory umami broth, tangled with caramelized onions and silky scrambled egg. It's a flavor bomb that feels like a warm hug from a Japanese grandma who knows how to party. Then there's the Japanese Hambagu Steak Bowl--a juicy, pan-seared patty with rich demi-glace vibes that pairs like a dream with Brick Box's malty Amber or the clean finish of their Lager. These bowls aren't just meals--they're mood-lifters. Beer That Speaks Tucson The tap list is a love letter to local brewing: old-school Thunder Canyon classics meet new Brick Box originals. Whether you're sipping the Mosaic-hopped Pale Ale or diving into the Belma-forward IPA, each brew has personality--and a story. Service That Feels Like Home From the moment you walk in, it's Cheers meets desert cool. The bartenders are fast, friendly, and genuinely excited to chat about hops, food pairings, or even challenge you to a chess match. Whether you're flying solo or rolling deep, the vibe is inclusive, laid-back, and full of heart. --- Final Verdict: Brick Box Brewery isn't just a place to grab a pint--it's a place to feel seen, fed, and celebrated. Come for the beer, stay for the bowls, and leave with a smile (and maybe a new favorite bartender).

Pajama contest winner, me!

This was a collaborative event, #Soulfoodsunday by Cookin Wit Cort, Blax Friday and Brick Box! Mariam at the bar was dope. She was kind and attentive, pretty busy the entire time, until she clocked out lol. I had the lemonade w/ Natural Meyer Lemons and house made cane sugar and it was delicious! However, they ran out but there menu looked really good. Cort had the food on lock, fried chicken wings, mac & cheese, yams and greens! There were live, local Tucson artist featured, a lil spoken word and rap. It's actually a pretty big space, I actually won the pajama contest!

My Huckleberry wheat

I stopped by on a Thursday around 8pm. It was Open Mic night and the place was dimly-lit and crowded. I arrived to hear the beautiful voice of Terra, who was finishing her set. Three more singers tried their luck before I left. But I didn't come to listen to music. I came to try this place out now that it has been sold to a former partner of the Thunder Canyon Brewery (TCB) owners. Most of the beers on tap are from the TCB recipes, including the Huckleberry Wheat beer (IBU 10; ABV 5%; $6) I had tonight. The beer had a nice tang to it. I will have to come back when there isn't a special event like Open Mic Night, which, I learned today, is always the first Thursday of the month. I want to be able to hear myself talk and look at the true color of the beer I am enjoying. The dining area looks smaller than when this was the TCB. The focus now seems to be on the bar and not so much the restaurant.

Brick Box amber ale

This was my first time in, so I asked for recommendations. My bartender was super helpful. The house Amber was a great start while I awaited my Katsu House order. The spirit tea was light, tea-forward and refreshing, going wonderfully with my spicy Katsu take on a hotdog with furikake waffle fries. Delish and the atmosphere was chill on a Friday afternoon, but I could tell as the music was setting up and people were drifting in that the energy was about to go up!

Owner made me the Best Old Fashioned I've ever had, you've got to put this one on the menu!

Come here for the wagyu smash burgers! The house-made pickles & Kaiju sauce take it to the next level & their fries are great.

N we ordered our food n we were very well taken care of. Place is old industrial building right across the railroad tracks. Lots of people coming n going . Had wings , cheeseburgers w fries n we tried the tortillas soup which was tasty w a little kick . I only wish it was more temperature hot . I really like my food hot to the table especially soup. Great place to have lots of different craft beers especially their own beers. We had tea since we had errands to run . Come ck this place out it's worth coming to enjoy indoor n outdoor seating . Pretty interesting building there right on the train tracks. It's got a cool dive bar feel inside with a large beer and food menu, good variety there. I went with a flight to try a few - Mexican lager, Hefeweizen, razzberry, and a mocha Java stout (maybe messed up the names a bit, but you get the idea). The hefe was my favorite, and my husbands, too. The razzberry one was a close second, but I could have done without the other two, not my cup of tea but wanted to give them a try! I don't see Sonoran hot dogs on menus often and being new to Tucson, I've been super curious about them so that was my meal choice. DIVINE. It's hard to mess up a hot dog. But this was a really good hot dog. Would order again and again. The price was right as well - $7! We thought the entire menu was very reasonably priced, compared to others in the area offering similar varieties. My husband had a cheesesteak that he said was really good, he would also order it again. Overall, we had a solid experience. Good beer and good food. I do want to add that this isn't my first time attempting to visit Barrio - we tried once before but were blocked by the train. We tried to wait it out but didn't know how long it would be and gave up after about 15 minutes. Just kind of a bummer of a location for a place with good food and beer. I did see on their menu that they offer $1 off beer if you get stuck because of the train, that is a nice touch. But, there's no perks like that if you are on the other side. It looses a star for that.

I came for an event and immediately realized this is the kind of spot where every visit probably reveals something you missed the last time. The space is wildly eclectic in a way that feels intentional, not chaotic. You look up, you look around, you look again. There's a whole back area you wouldn't even know exists unless you wander, complete with its own seating and energy. Turns out they host yoga back there, plus a rotating lineup of events that actually feel community-driven instead of forced. Then there's the food situation. A Thai street food truck parked on site serving absolute flavor bombs. I had a curry tofu Thai taco--something I've never seen, let alone eaten--and it brought legit spice and depth. One of those "wait, why is this so good?" moments. Inside, the details keep stacking. A vending machine filled with mini purses, bath salts, and handmade artisan goods? Unhinged (affectionately). Swag everywhere. Walls that give you something new to look at every few seconds. And if that wasn't enough, they partner with Anello, which happens to be my favorite pizza in the city--so yes, that alone earns points. What really sealed it for me was how inclusive the menu is. A full non-alcoholic selection, vegan cookies and non-vegan options, so no one feels like an afterthought. Service was solid, friendly, and matched the laid-back but intentional vibe of the place. Honestly, I'm shocked it took me this long to make it to Crooked Tooth--but now that I have, I get it. This isn't just a brewery. It's a choose-your-own-adventure kind of space, and I'm already looking forward to the next chapter.

There was only one bartender when we arrived but they had some backup help a while after. The inside was clean and just good vibes.
