Everything was tasty but for being a hole-in-the-wall/strip mall location all the way up in the Anderson Mill area, prices were a bit high. When the mixed vegetable plate came out, I actually thought it was one of the freebie dishes of pickled vegetables that you sometimes get at restaurants. Turns out it was just a small plate of cold veggies for $10. Aside from that though, I still enjoyed the meal. It's the kind of place I would bring my parents to. The items on the menu aren't a lot and it took a while for the menu to load on my phone. You order by scanning the QR code on the table. The food doesn't look like anything special, so we can got two items: Preserved congee and green onion pancake. The congee had a different flavor profile than what I'm used to. I enjoyed the century eggs, which is a typical topping for congee but the congee was too peppery. The pork is also salty. Because the century egg is already salty, I felt that all the toppings didn't mix well. Green onion pancake was pretty good! You may get free soy milk if you leave a review. I'm also not a fan of soy milk but my friends who normally like soy milk didn't like it. Food is served very quickly, then you pay at the front at the end. For two, we ordered the soybean milk with a Chinese donut, beef noodle soup and the eggplant with garlic. All were very delicious. We've heard so many great things about Breakfast House, and we've been looking forward to checking out this Chinese breakfast place since we first learned about it. We were seated quickly and given a booth towards the back of the dining area when we arrived. We were given little instructions on viewing the menu, but I saw a QR code on the table and went from there. The prices here are astronomical. They charge $4 for a Chinese donut (you trial), which is crazy. For those who don't know, it's just fried dough. It's not sweet. They add no sugar or glaze to the top. American donut shops don't charge more than $1.50 for their largest donuts, lol. Their soy milk (dou jiang) was listed for $4. They also charge about $13 for a braised beef noodle soup, among other choices that seem overpriced for what they are. But in the spirit of wanting to try this place, we pulled the trigger and ate the bill. The soy milk came out quickly, and we were served a large ceramic cup. It was hot and very sweet, sweeter than most other Chinese breakfast places I've been to. The Chinese donut took a while to come out, but it was hot and fresh when it did. The beef noodle soup came out third and was very tasty in its own right. We also ordered a fourth dish, a beef sandwich, in which flavors were on point. There was an incident when a dish we didn't order was brought to our table. We told the server this, and they returned to check what went wrong. Then we later saw the dish served to a table a couple of tables down from us. Each order is ordered from a specific table. I wonder how they got the order confused. When we arrived, their front doors were left open to let in cool air from outside to save on their A/C bill. A bee flew in and terrorized other customers as it flew over their heads and near their food. A worker had to come out with a fly swatter to kill it, which they eventually did. That's when they finally decided to close the front doors. The dining area was clean and well-organized, and they had music that wasn't playing too loud. But for the price, the order mix-up, pest control, and the little clarity on how to order made this a 2-star experience. 99 Ranch Deli has the same or similar tasty food options for about half the cost. Maybe I'm just unaware, but to my knowledge, Breakfast house is potentially the only? But definitely the most accessible place to get food items like hot soy milk and you tiao and tofu hua, etc. I've seen a lot of reviews of people waiting forever to get a table, which I assume will get better as the restaurant becomes less new. But we went at 6pm on a Monday and it was practically dead inside. There were so many tables available. So maybe going for dinner might be the move! Especially since they have a lot of bigger dishes that are perfect for dinner. The food was pretty good, tasted authentic to me at least! But it was on the pricier side. For my table of three, it ended up being around $25 per person, but we did leave with leftovers. The menu is also pretty extensive, which I enjoyed. Even ordering food the first time, I was already in the mindset of what I would try the next time I go. The servers were pretty friendly and were quick to accommodate us, with knives to split food, serving spoons, etc. I will say, we had some flies that kept coming after our food, because they had left the door of the restaurant open to let the cool air in. But it honestly added to the feel of being in China - an authentic experience lol. breakfast house is a small part of home in this vast city. the menu has everything, from canto dim sum to northern breakfast foods to sichuan entrees and noodle soups. their xiao long bao was absolutely delicious! the clear beef noodle soup was warm and healing and came in a huge bowl. the crispy chili fish was so crunchy and tender, but it could use more peppers and spices. id definitely stick with the northern dishes here. another downside is having to share tables with strangers, but it makes sense given the size of the place. definitely a good place to go for nostalgic comfort food! read more

Update since my last review: I went back recently and the quality has unfortunately gone down: The Fried dough (you tiao) was dry and tasted refried. The tofu soup (dou fu nao) was essentially only tofu and and soup. The fried noodles were very salty, but objectively the least disappointing dish. The beef wrap had cold beef slices in the center (which might be what their version of the dish is like, but pales considerably when compared to Julie's Noodle or Chens Noodle). Paying is also a struggle since they only have one payment terminal up front. The same payment terminal they use for takeout orders so we stood there for 10 minutes waiting to pay. Overall, highly disappointed with my recent visit and hope that their quality improves. read more

(I described the general nature of the place and some of the dishes we had) Since that first review I have had a chance to eat more broadly from their menu. Every dish either got a B or A +++++++++++++++ The A plusses were so dramatically good that I do not particularly care about the B's. My tablemates gave the sweet and sour chicken an A. The recipe is unlike any version you have ever had in the U.S. The sauce was A+ all the way. I thought the chicken was tough - But my ecstatic tablemates really didn't care. * * * But then my ecstatic tablemates did not want to go anywhere near my rapidly fried pork kidney. That pork kidney was one of the two greatest kidney dishes I have had in my life. First prize was a bowl of pig organ soup in Singapore. Second prize was kidney here at Breakfast House in Austin, Texas. Their trick is to score the kidney the way squid gets scored. Just as squid becomes more tender that way, Kidney becomes more tender with scoring. And the fast cooking allows it to retain a lot of taste Instead of kidney dissolving into sauce and vegetable. Add some good stir fried peppers (which is what Breakfast House does) and there is fine eating to be had. Another A +++++++++++++++ Is Sauteed Peanuts. I think the peanuts are sauteed with ghee or butter. Tablemates thought it was some kind of oil. Either way - the peanuts are as warm and comforting as if they had been sauteed in butter. I could not stop eating the darn things. You know how peanuts at a baseball game are supposedly addictive and you can't stop eating them? It has been a long time since I have had baseball peanuts that were nearly that good. These peanuts are pure heroin but you don't have to go into rehab after you eat them. One of these days, I will have to try sauteeing peanuts in butter and see what happens. * * * There were lots of other dishes on the table And the table was generally pleased. In contrast to my previous review, None of what we had except for one noodle dish was starch. (The earlier review talked about the starchy house specialties that are served.) Came here on Easter Sunday. Not impressed whatsoever. You walk in and there's just chaos. I had to ask another person in line how it works. Apparently you tell the person at register how many people. Then she will seat you. You then order on an app which was helpful. We both ordered beef noodle soup but 1 was braised beef. The broth for braised beef was good but the beef itself was extremely chewy and hard. We definitely won't be coming back but it was worth a try. I was excited to try the Pork Floss Egg Pancake ($8.99) because I love egg pancakes. While it tasted good, I found it a bit thin with not much filling. It had a slice of cucumber and hoisin sauce, which was nice, but I only really enjoyed it when I doubled the layers. For the price, I was expecting a bit more ingredients and thickness. The Braised Beef Noodle Soup ($12.99) was flavorful, with a rich Sichuan broth and a good balance of vegetables and noodles. However, the portion of beef left something to be desired. It was tender but lean, and I would have preferred a heartier cut like shank or tendon. Still, for the price, it was decent. The Savory Tofu ($4.49) was a dish I've been waiting for in Austin for years! We chose savory since the sweet version is more common. The tofu was silky and light, topped with what tasted like the broth from hot and sour soup--minus the sourness. At first, we weren't sure we'd like it, but we ended up slurping it all up. However, there was some confusion because the tofu didn't come from the kitchen right away, and many tables were waiting until they realized it was being served at the front. Pricing is very affordable. For two of us, it was only $26! As for the service, it's a mix of Chinese and Austin-style, so you order everything via QR code and flag someone down if needed. The app had a few glitches, like items not appearing in the cart, leading to some confusion when settling the bill. Napkins, bowls, and utensils are all self-serve. I stopped by this Chinese restaurant on Saturday while in the area. Don't let the name fool you. They offer noodles, dim sum and other items and not just breakfast based on the name. We ordered the green onion pancake, Chongqing noodle soup, spicy beef noodle soup and combination fried rice. Both soups were flavorful and hit the spot. It's soup weather and you will find these dishes comforting and satisfying. They are definitely living in the future with their to go containers. The meat and toppings with noodles on top and the broth on the bottom. That is such a good idea so your noodles won't get all soggy. Love that idea! I have never seen anything like that! The noodles had a great texture and the numbing sensation from the Sichuan peppercorn. The green onion pancake, however, fell a little flat. It lacked salt and could have used a bit more seasoning to stand out however that could just be my Westernized palette wanting sodium. The combination fried rice was good and definitely got the seal of approval from my little. She ate the veggies in it since it was good! The Chinese fried donut was good. My Chinese family and I are originally from Los Angeles. We have a go-to place in LA for northern Chinese breakfast food, but now we've found our new go-to place in Austin, TX! I've gotten food from Breakfast House to-go a couple times now. Here is my general opinion on some of the items here: Beef Wrap - this was over-fried for me. Might just be a preference, but I like this to be crispy and not crunchy. It was a bit light on filling and there was no sauce provided either. Egg Pancake - this is a dish you can't get elsewhere. Simple, and probably easy to make yourself, but nostalgic for me. Spicy Beef and Beef Belly - pretty classic dish, nice and spicy. Chives Egg Pancake - another dish that is very nostalgic for me, I always enjoy this. Braised Pork with Glass Noodles - pretty good, the braised pork wasn't as tender as I would like. Beef Noodle Soup - always a favorite for me, would recommend trying here - every place that has this dish does it slightly differently. Overall, the menu is gigantic and the translations could use some work (and better pictures), but I think with this spot, you just have to find the best menu items through experimentation and those are the ones you re-order next time! read more

Finally! Taiwanese breakfast in Austin is here! Carb lovers rejoice! Breakfast House has some of the comfort food that many have been craving for years and it's perfect any time of the day. Be warned though: food coma is imminent here. They have many staples here which are executed to perfection - sweetened hot soy milk with the chinese fried donut is a classic pairing. The sesame cakes are also hot and crisp - you can really mash it up with a donut inside a sesame cake but that's a bit over the top on fried carbs i would think. They also got a lot of noodle dishes but I honestly think those were just ok. Beef stir fried noodles are plentiful and seasoned well but nothing too special. Pork and egg noodle soup was also nostalgic but it's definitely more on the gloopy side and while it has some of the white pepper and vinegar vibe, it's not for everyone, but if you need the old time sake hit, go for it. If you're coming with a group, just go after the dim sum items to try everything imo. Hear it gets packed on the weekends though, so come early. read more
