Man, what an awesome spot! Not sure if I loved the vibe, the decor, the couches, the space or the beers better. Basically a bicycle theme microbrewery that has a fantastic lay out and such inviting space with comfy couches and other seating. The vibes are all Breaking Away (some of a certain age will remember this 70s movie). Had a flight + 2 full pours. All their beers are solid and it was hard to find which full pours I was going to have. Their Marzen was definitely the winner both times. I'd heard of this place before but hadn't had occasion to go. My vieja and I went to folklores for coffee and I convinced her to go with me to check out the brewery. If you know anything about bicycling, you know the lingo. The business name made me think of the 1979 movie called Breaking Away. Yes, I am old. It's very open and seating is plentiful. If you're there early on a weekend be prepared for lots of bike riders. No, you don't have to wear tight clothing. The brown ale was delicious and so were the tofu bites. The best part for me was running into a fellow South Bay "alumni". We reminisced about Gardena, Hawthorne, the beach cities and the local breweries. Based on that interaction alone, I'll go back. We popped in after having coffee and breakfast around the corner. We didn't realize they would have a full kitchen and menu along with a variety of drink options. The place was busy with a number of bike riders stopping in after their rides. Seems like a pretty popular meet up spot. Even though we were stuffed from coffee and breakfast sandwiches, we ordered the tofu bites and they didn't disappoint. The tofu was perfectly crunchy on the outside and chewy on the inside. Headed into Breakaway for Restaurant Week. This was my first time and the food was delicious!!! We did have the Restaurant Week menu which was chips, a smash burger, and a cherry bread pudding. All were super yummy! The chips had a kick to them. And the burger came with a potato salad that was so fresh. We also ordered the Breakaway Breakfast Sandwich!! Wow!! The Biscuit! I had questions about some of the beer and the bartender was great and patient at answering them. They also offered small tastes of the beer I was interested in to help me make my choice. Ambiance: I really enjoyed the ambiance. They had good music on that ranged from several genres and wasn't too loud. This allowed conversations to occur without having to yell. There were plenty of seating areas to choose from. Some seating was a little more private or others closer to the bar area. There was a whole wall of windows that allowed you to look outside, see the street and Fort Sam Houston. It was nice to see something outside vs a wall. There were TV's and bikes hung on the walls adding to the vibe (take a moment to read about the owners). There are several board games available if you come with a group of friends. They also hold games nights! Food: The beer def hit the spot. I ordered the "Forget me not" which had blueberry. It was enjoyable and part of the proceeds went to an Alzheimer's charity. I also had "The Texan." They offer various sizes to choose from and have tasting flights. The prices are reasonable. I only had the polenta fries, they were fresh and found them to be very crispy (yum!), the Gorgonzola dipping sauce complimented them very well. It was light, fresh, and just the right amount of tangy for the polenta fries. We came in a bit after 6:30 on a Wednesday - no one else in the place except for the bartender/order taker. Music was at a nice level! Parking was adequate (no other cars in the lot) - don't know about the requirement for "signing in" since the parking lot is some how managed by cameras/computers. I just parked and we walked in. I hate those systems. The young woman behind the bar was friendly and paid attention to what we said - a pleasant experience. The order was placed at the bar and not at the table. We placed the order and it promptly arrived. The prices were certainly reasonable. The service to the table was great. The interior is rather sterile - but has various accoutrements to some what offset that - certainly not like a pub warm feeling. The beer I order was maybe a C+. It seemed a bit flat, but had a good taste. The hamburger, Grand Tour Hamburger, at $16.50 was really enjoyable. I requested it not be "smashed" ( I don't like smash burgers) and to be cooked rare - but it came out medium well. Nevertheless the flavors of the meat and toppings were quite satisfying. I think I return and find a beer that I may really like. Then that may elevate Breakaway to a 5 star - it is almost there now. read more

Another great brewery in San Antonio. Each one has its own unique subculture and Breakaway goes all out with theirs. This is a biker bar. Or should it be called a cyclist bar? Yeah - that's more like it. Cycling on the TV's, bike stuff everywhere and even themed beers. The staff here is lovely. Personable and attentive. You have to try the baked pepperonis! Delightful. The pretzel and salad was delicious as well. The only minor set back for me is that I didn't enjoy the selection of beers as much to give it 5 stars. Another visit with a different selection could change that. I do appreciate that they brew their own so I'm sure it will rotate to options I would be more for. My oldest son and his wife came down to visit me for Father's Day. We spent the day running all over town drinking and eating. We started at the Botanical Gardens on what was probably the hottest day of the season so far this year. It wasn't completely miserable, but man was I thirsty by the time we got back in the car. Everybody but my wife likes trying out different breweries and brew pubs. Fortunately, she tolerates it and goes with the flow. I had always wanted to try Breakaway, and since it was so close to the gardens, we headed on over. First, let me commend them on their wonderful parking lot. I don't know if it is only theirs, but it is large enough for many vehicles to park comfortably and easily. They had some outdoor tables, had we wanted to continue the melting process started earlier. We opted for a very comfortable table with booth-like bench seats on one side and chairs on the other. It was right by the bar. My son and I went up to the ordering station and ordered some flights, a sangria for my wife, and some munchies. We would have eaten lunch there, but the kids wanted to eat at one of the Burger Week places, since part of the proceeds for your meal go to charity. The owner heard us talking about it and told us he was convinced that his burger would beat out any other burger in town. It sounded absolutely delicious, but the kids stuck to their guns. The munchies we ordered were the arancini and the barbecued tofu bites. And before all you anti-tofu people start your muttering, let me state up front that they were the best thing I ate all day! The barbecue flavor was amazing, and the consistency of the tofu was absolutely perfect. There were so many on the plate that it could have been a meal by itself. Since nobody else would brave the tofu, I ate most of them myself. The others scarfed down the huge arancini balls as if they had been without food for a week. I went to snag a bite, and those things were GONE! Let me tell you... If the shareables are this amazing, the rest of the menu must be, too. I'll be back. The beers that I tried on my flight were all very good. The Super Domestique IPA was my favorite. I need to go back for another flight to try the other beers on tap. The general atmosphere of this place is bright, roomy and comfortable. The server who took care of us at the bar was very welcoming and helpful. As I said, the owner came to our table when he heard us talking about burgers. He seemed to be a very proud business owner. He came across as friendly and genuine. I eavesdropped on one of the conversations at the bar. He was telling about a fantastic trip he took to the Dogfish Head brewery. It sounded like something I would really enjoy, so I need to go back and talk to him about it. Oh... One last thing. This was the only venue out of 5 that we visited that had a robust enough AC system to truly keep us cool. The other places were all struggling to barely maintain that humid "wish it were a bit cooler in here" feeling. Being cool is very important to this old fat man. read more

It was OK, but it didn't make my top 5 list of breweries in the SA area. I tried their amber ale, and it was decent. They have 8 beers on tap, which is a good variety, but most weren't my type. I wish I had tried the Irish stout, though. The place is nice--pretty new on the inside and has plenty of parking, considering the area they are in. I was there before 6 pm, so all drafts were just $5. The two tap masters were friendly and very cool. I was a bit confused by their theme--they seem to be trying to attract bicyclists. I know cyclists like to stop for a beer during or after a ride, but I didn't think there were many cyclists around here. It's just 2 blocks from one of the gates to Ft. Sam. Bottom line--if you're in the area, go for it. But don't go out of your way. read more

Happy to have a new brewery in town! :) Went on a Friday a little more than an hour and a half before closing. The burger I tried was great. The potato salad as well. The beer tasted a bit flat as seen in the pic, it's lacking head. I feel they're still working out kinks on their carbonation system. I tried their IPA. Other thing I noticed was the staff seemed like they weren't as efficient as could be. We paid for beer, we waited a couple minutes to see if we would get the beer poured but lady at register went onto next guest. We sat down then after a few minutes saw our beer poured on the counter. No "your beer is ready." Same with water we weren't given a heads up on where everything was as it's our first time. We didn't feel the "welcome to our brewery" feel from the staff. Overall not bad, I feel once they are open a little longer and they get more feedback they'll fix the little issues with the chaotic first weeks. Come check them out! read more

I've been to breakaway a few times now and they're one of my favorite craft breweries in central SA. They're accessible and have plenty parking. The service has been great each time. There's plenty of seating options with various seating arrangements as well. I will admit that as a bigger person, the barstools are uncomfortable. There was a reasonable selection of beers and they were all well done. The ones I didn't particularly like were much more a matter of not being a good match for my palette than actually not good. They were all well executed for their style. Also having a good variety over a modest number of taps, 8 I think, is really positive thing for a craft brewery. Very inviting space. We were there for lunch during a weekday. Not busy, plenty of room at the bar. The bartender greeted us right away and was very attentive. We each got one of the IPAs of draft and ordered the tacos and a salad. The tacos were super tasty and served with chips, avocado and salsa. The salad was amazingly fresh and the compliment of tart dressing with the candied pecans and strawberries was delicious. We were a little concerned about parking, but there is a large lot with some spaces reserved specifically for the brewery. There were at least two different trivia nights advertised (one traditional, one for songs). Would come back and take advantage of the comfy seating area, if just having a beer.
