This past Monday, we headed to @claudehoppers.sa for dinner. We were there for their happy hour goodness. My husband had the HH Frozen Margarita while I had the HH Margarita on the Rocks. We shared the Jalapeno Sausages, which had just the right amount of spice. Dad and I shared the Ham & Cheese Panini. My husband had the Chicken Pesto Panini. A friend and I recently decided to visit Claude Hoppers after work for their happy hour as we'd heard good things about this neighborhood bar. We arrived around 6:30PM and there was a decent amount of people inside and only one group sitting outside. We decided to sit at the bar as we were not planning to stay too long. The bartender working was very new (it was her second day), but did her best to answer any question we had and was very friendly! We loved chit-chatting with her. We ordered a cocktail, a beer and a pretzel as someone else at the bar was saying how great their pretzels always are. The cocktail was well made and couldn't have been better! When the pretzel arrived, it was served with a side of melted cheese as well as packets of grey poupon mustard. Upon first look, the pretzel looked soft and delicious! I tore off a piece from the center (where the twist is) and was disappointed to realize the inside was still cold/ frozen. I told the server and she quickly took it back to the kitchen. Once the pretzel came back out (a new one), it was very firm and darker in color as they were clearly trying to make sure this one was not cold. Sadly... the inner twist was still cold while the outside was scolding hot. My friend and I both agreed that we wouldn't reorder the pretzel. My Husband and I popped in here one Sunday afternoon after a day of running errands, he needed a beer and I needed a snack! We had always seen Claude Hoppers in passing and were in the area so decided we'd give it a try. The inside is very much a sports bar (great place to catch a football game on a Sunday), while the outside gives more of a beer garden feel - lots of seating and great outdoor space. The bartender who waited on us was really kind and welcomed us in as it being out first time. My Husband ordered a Pinthouse Electric Jellyfish and I ordered the pretzel, which came with a beer cheese on the side. The pretzel was a decent size for both of us to share and was soo good! I really like how much variety they have on their menu - there is something for everyone. As for my Husband's beer, it was great and to make it even better, a 16oz for $5! Holy smokes! The place is small and intimate inside with a nice open patio outside. The atmosphere and its patrons were very chill and fun. People were laughing and enjoying each others company. There aren't servers so you have to go to the bar to order food and drinks. The menu is small for food (bar food) but there was a wealth of beers on tap. Bonus: two different types of Yuengling but no Black and Tan. Texas may have to wait a while longer for that one to get here. The female bartender was a little (a lot) lost. Each time I said an item I wanted she said, "is that it?" which made me think that she wasn't taught the art up upselling yet but that's another story. I ordered food and my drink and then my husband ordered his food and drink. He offered a card and she said she "didn't think she needed that" but then put our order as to-go. ??? We went back to our table and realized that other tables had table tents so I went back and asked if I needed a number and they were like, oh yea! How about this number? And handed me a table tent. We waited about 40 minutes for wings and meatballs. The Yuengling on tap - not warm but not cold. Meh. The wine - La Crema Pinot noir. I ask the female bartender if they had Pinot Noir and she said, "oh this?" with a very confused look on her face and showed me a bottle of Chardonnay. Um, no. Anyway, our food was finally brought out. The wings had a decent flavor but they weren't hot and they were slimy and gummy. Yuck. He asked for blue cheese and he got ranch and one empty and dirty ramekin??? The meatballs were previously frozen, in my opinion, but weren't too bad. But they weren't hot either. In the middle of waiting on our food, the female bartender came up and tried to had us a very watered down drink I had noticed at the bar when ordering twenty minutes prior. She asked if we ordered this drink and when we said no, she continued to ask around to find the right person. The piece de resistance was our bill. Everything was of a normal price but my glass of wine...was TEN DOLLARS. La Crema normally sells for about 12-15 for a bottle. I get a mark up to make a profit, but dude. That's just rude. This place truly has potential but they need to step it up a notch on hot food and maybe a once around from the bartender to check on patrons and to bus some tables. I say this because a gentleman next to us very jokingly but vocally said, "pardon me while I bus my table" as he went back and forth 3 times to empty his table of empty glasses and dishes from the people at his table. My all women's volunteer organization hosted a fund raiser trivia night at this bar. When I got there, I was worried we wouldn't have enough room or tables for the group, but we ended up being fine. It's a small place for a large group, but they were attentive and accommodating. There seemed to be a limited staff working (maybe 3?) but the service was good. Food menu is small but has some good looking options. It's not on the overhead electronic screens (drinks only) but there are laminated menus around. And pictures posted on the business' Yelp page. They also have a water cooler (like the kind you have at football games) so you can get water whenever you want. This is a fun little bar in a strip of other businesses. It may get looked over but if you are in the area, it would be a good place to check out. The fun: Lots of drink choices with a wide variety of IPAs. All 4 people at our table enjoyed what they had. The Purple Haze was a hit with another at our table. I enjoyed the Crackberry cider. It was a little more tart than I usualoy like, but I thought it was a decent cider. Also some canned and bottled beverages. Max was behind the bar for our event, and he was very friendly. He also handled our large group well. The less than ideal: The electronic menu keeps changing what is shown on the screen. There are 2 screens. There are 2 pages for the drink menu. However, the part of the menu displayed on each screen changes when the circle at the bottom fills up. It's not really enough time to read everything on one screen before it changes and you have to try to find your place again on the other screen. Before I dig into this review, I'd like to say I've been to numerous growler stations and think I've developed a pretty good basis of comparison/ expectations. This place is super far from San Antonio. Okay I got that out the way. There's plenty of parking and indoor/outdoor seating. The outdoor patio is set up kind of like a beer garden, but there's no walk-up window service. There is wait staff though, so that's cool. Immediately I was impressed with the selection of beers. Not sure how often they change them, but for a first timer it was a change for sure. The indoor area has booths, high-tops, bar seating and a little cove in the back. Liking that. The staff was cool too. The food is better than bar food. I mean they offer humus and pulled pork tacos. Whaaaaaat?! Some things I really didn't care for were no 1/2 pours, flights and condiment taster cups. If I'm willing to commit to paying a little extra for craft beer, then I'm definitely not okay with plastic taster cups. Every other craft beer spot offers glass tasters. I understand they offer flights now, since my visit about 3 weeks ago. My first "beer only" type of pub, and also my introduction to Geeks Who Drink Pub trivia. Claude Hoppers is pretty far out of my way but it's still a grand time when I get to go. They have a nice selection of beer, on par with your local Big Hops, and a mix of high and low seating, as well as a nice outdoor patio. I had a first date here and when he went to the bathroom, the bartender was eavesdropping a bit and excitedly ran up to me to squeal, "Is this a first date!? He's SO hot, where did you find him!?" This place deserves a 0-star. It is a RACIST place. For the very first time, I came to this place. I waited for at least 10 minutes, but no one showed up to serve me. I went towards the kitchen and took a look inside. I never entered the kitchen. A blonde girl EVENTUALLY showed up and got scared. I politely apologized to her and requested two drinks. She asked about my nationality!!! When I said I was Persian, she refused to serve me. This is an act of racism. Another dick-sized guy accused me that I was drunk and kicked me out of the restaurant/bar. I was never drunk. I have bartending certificate from California and I am familiar with the rules and policies. I have recently applied for a sensitive government job and am in process of a stiff background check. I cannot violate the laws of this land. I hope management finds a solution for this incident. This place is in stark contradiction with this country's values and constitution! Went here the other day to grab some drinks. Overall, walking in the place has a cool vibe. They play primarily reggae music and have about 50 beers on tap that is listed on a screen with the price and alcohol percentage. The downside of this place is their cleanliness, service, and beer knowledge. We went there and everyone ordered the Ballast Point Grunion Pale Ale. When we drank it though, we knew it wasn't the actual beer and the bartender insisted that it was. Lucky for us, we were with a Ballast Point distributor so he looked at the tap and confirmed that it in fact wasn't the beer we had requested. The service was highly lacking. There was one lady working and maybe 10 at most people in the place. But it was fairly calm, yet she didn't walk around to ask us if we need more after our empty glasses sat there for over 15 minutes. As for cleanliness, the toilet paper and paper towels were empty in the restroom. Also, there was a pile of looks like swept up trash just sitting on the ground near a table. So it's 645 on Sunday, October 29. I just thought I'd stop in to Claude hoppers cause I've never been there before and I've seen some advertisements and some of the burgers and other bar. Food look pretty good. I walked in small crowd, maybe less than a dozen people all sitting at the bar. I grab a seat at one of the high tops very close to the bar. Look over the menu and I see there's two different burgers there. A cheeseburger and an Italian burger. I wait and I wait and I wait for someone to come and talk to me possibly take my order the only service person I can see in the bar is the bartender. After another eight minutes he finally comes around from behind the bar and he says what can I get for you boss? And I just inquired what is an Italian burger? And he looked at it frozen for a while, and said I have no idea! So that told me that if the service was bad, the food was probably bad too so I left.too bad I'm sure they could use every bit of business they can get. So, I was able to score a Groupon for this particular place awhile back and wanted to get a really good deal on a growler fill. First off could this place be any further from the city?!! It was like I could see the Eiffel Tower on the next block! Secondly I was anticipating a much bigger space, as all the pictures I saw of it gave me that impression. However, what I've learned as I Yelp is that the disparity between perception and actual experience can be great. As you enter here a really cool iron fence with ornate lighting opens up the patio, with ample seating and tables to match. By comparison the taproom is relatively small. The interior itself is both sleek and cozy. A small bar area with a few high chairs/ tables gives me the impression the intent of the owner was to create an intimate experience. In contrast it is a refreshing departure from the noise and bustle of other tap rooms. But then again there are people that gravitate toward a busy, crowded bar. The growler/tap station itself is a small counter space with a healthy beer selection alongside a wall. In addition a small screen displays beers by name, price and alcohol content. Since this location is in Stone Oak prices are in fitting with this area. For example a simple pour of the Real Ale's, "Mysterium Verum Kraken" a rare tap, will set you back $12. Definitely expect to pay a little more than the typical taproom you might frequent, if you choose to come here. In terms of service the tapmaster was very professional. I like how she moved from patron to patron, able to take orders and fill pours. She knew customers on a first name basis but more importantly knew their drink of choice; which speaks volumes of this establishment. In my tattered slip-on Vans I collected my growler of Karbach's "Krunkin Pumkin" and headed on out. My only critiques of this spot would be I wish they would post on their page the prices for their beers. And the distance. If this was in the Deco District area I would probably hit this place up more frequently. Still Claude Hopper's is a really cool tap/growler station with a sleek layout. The vibe is laid back, the beer selection is good, the patio is perfect for conversation and the service is excellent. Something like 82 beers on tap. All craft beer. So if miller lite is your drink... This is not your place. The bar tender knew her beer. I was surprised. I witnessed her point people on the right direction based on their taste. The bar was only open two days but clean. Nice patio. What else do you want...!!!!
