It's ironic that Bread Alone is exactly what they bake when they bake bagels. These are not bagels. They are bagel shaped bread. Bagels are boiled before being baked. Bagels have a texture that is very different to bread in the same way that buttery croissants differ in texture from leathery ciabatta, and the crumb in pound cake differs from that in angel food cake. This isn't a place where I expect to get something that's called a bagel but is merely bread shaped like a bagel. You don't have to be a New Yorker, a Montréaler, Polish or Jewish to know what a real bagel is, and Rhinebeck's residents - and many visitors - know: a real bagel is dense and chewy with a doughy interior, and an appealingly browned, mildly crisp exterior. We deserve real bagels, and we can get them at a bagel shop in town. Come on, Bread Alone, up your game here! read more

I've been coming to Bread Alone for about 20 years now. The food in the past was always a treat. A bit of NYC quality, but in the Catskills. Well times have changed a lot in those years and there is now a lot of stiff competition. So I recently went back after they had been closed for over a year for their much needed refurbishment. The place looks great and the staff for the most part are very good. My two criticisms however is that the staff really need to put their menus at the front where the line begins. When it gets chaotic in there people will walk to the front, grab a menu and the staff will start taking their order completely ignoring the people who have been patiently waiting in line to place their order. As you can imagine this can cause a lot of confusion and cause people to start getting angry and argumentative about line cutting. And finally? The portions. For the prices they are charging there should be a lot more meat on the sandwiches instead of a few slices and a bunch of vegetables to bulk it out. read more

Good sandwiches, great desserts, fine bread--and the best Mexican Wedding Cookies to be had this side of the mountain. What mars the experience here is an ongoing problem with highly uneven and sometimes unpleasant service: often slow, sometimes incompetent, on more than one occasion downright surly. (Many teenagers seem to be employed here, which is just fine, but it sometimes seems adult supervision is lacking--and service quality suffers as a result.) We've had breakfast/lunch here and while the food was incredibly good and deserves 5+ stars, the cappuccino was a disgrace. The bread and pastry were so good, that I hate myself for living in NYC and not being able to enjoy it on a regular basis. It's a bit on the pricey side but you get what you pay for. About the cappuccino; The espresso shot in the cappuccino was desperately over extracted (only bitter notes, no acids) and the milk was over steamed (frothed by adding too much air) until there was just foam and thin milk. To make things worse, the barista used the frothed milk for two cups. While the first cup got all the thin milk, the second cup got all the foam. Basically the barista did everything wrong you could do with such an excellent espresso machine. She (probably) set the grinder too fine, tamped too hard (literally with all her body weight) and let too much air into the milk. read more

Stopped by the bakery today after checking out a retreat center in the area. Service was excellent! Extremely friendly and very helpful. Ordered the chicken tarragon sandwich (highly recommend it) and a loaf of the organic miche (absolutely delicious). I like this place a lot. The sourdoughs are amazing and we frequently buy the baked goods and sandwiches they prepare. However, the drinks are not so special. For the coffee, they leave a good portion empty. For the chai, it's just weird milk with spices at the bottom. While I understand that the drinks aren't necessarily what their specialty is, if you want a lunch and want a special drink, this does disappoint. However, I do like the baked goods that they make. Unfortunately, their selection is often limited. Your best bet is to order online and pick up whatever you would like later, which is sometimes not an option. Overall, I like this place, but I can't give it 5 stars because the drinks aren't good and their selection is often very limited. read more

This was the original establishment for this company. Our sandwiches were terrific! My fiance had mozzarella and tomato and basil on San Francisco sourdough bread. I had turkey with lettuce and mayonnaise on San Francisco sourdough as well. We both had Boylan's black cherry soda which was delicious. For dessert we shared an oatmeal raisin cookie which was nothing to write home about. If you want a great sandwhich, and can eat the variety of pre-made sandwich ideas that they list, this is a terrific place. We've been customers at Boiceville Bread Alone since 2013. We have noticed consistently that the service can be very rude. I ask myself why some of the staff there are so hostile? It's a cute little place, serves good pastries, why are they so unhappy to be there? Are there really so many jobs in this area in a cute little café available to young people? I really think that the staff on the whole needs training in how to represent the business in a more positive way. Most of the time the staff seems put upon and angry to provide the basics to customers. And then when called out on their rude behavior they behave even more unkindly. I don't know how long I'll continue to deal with this kind of behavior. I hope management takes note and provides the necessary training to the staff. read more

Bread was delicious. Service is bad. We ordered iced macchiato, the girl gave me a plastic cup with two inches of coffee in it. I asked her what that is, she said it's macchiato with a big attitude. Obviously I knwo what macchiato is, so I told her that doesnt look like what i have expected, first it's not cold (it's between hot and lukewarm), second its 1/5 full. She gave me a big attitude again and say "well, thats macchiato, do you want it or not? I can put ice in if thats what you want." What kind of service is that? First I think she made a mistake on the drink, second of all, thats really poor service. She is trying to prove that I am wrong! I would rate the bread 4 stars, and the service zero. The boy stand next to him seems to know that she was rude, and insisted that he know what i am saying, and will make me another one. But at that point, I have lost my interest already. Will I come back again? No. I can take other bakery with a much better service. read more

I have been wanting to pay homage to this famed bakery for a few years. Finally, we decided to stop by the birth place of Bread Alone after we visited Saugerties. When I walked into the store/bakery, I knew something was missing but couldn't figured out what initially. As I chatted with the store clerks about bread baking, it was apparent that they were not passionate about bread or knowledgeable of the process. Therefore, I walked away disappointed but with a loaf of bread anyway. Then I realized what was missing - this bakery did not have the yeast dough smell and it seemed to lack the "soul". I've never even been anywhere near the store, but once I tried the vegan spelt chocolate poundcake at a friends' place in NY, I was HOOKED. I couldn't find a place to order online to my home in Miami so I gave them a ring and they told me they'd gladly ship it. They highly suggested I ship it UPS Air, but the total ended up being something ridiculous (over $40 or something). I had to take the risk of mailing the loaf UPS Ground. The loaf was wrapped in plastic and in perfect condition when it reached me. It WAS $28 for it to be shipped to me, but the loaf itself was much larger than I expected and must've weighed 5lbs. Good cheeses set on fresh breads accompanied by delicious veggies and meats. I was definitely impressed to find this gem in the middle of nowhere, and even more impressed recently when I was in Manhattan and saw their breads they were serving were from this place. I have been buying bread at this location since it opened 30 plus years ago. I have seen quality go down, loaves get smaller and smaller, but lately it has become dismal. The loaves are overproofed, which is visible as loaves are flat and have a sharp edge on bottom instead of plumply rounding, and they do not rise correctly in the oven, they are kept in the oven too long, often burned at edges, It is a rarity that you get a well proofed and well baked piece of bread. When it happens the bread is delicious. But it is a rare occasion. If the owner was passionate about bread in the past, apparently he feels he can sell anything to the NY week end crowd. I also attempt to buy at the Roxbury Saturday market. This market feels like it gets rejects. Rubbery croissants and baguettes, new types of bread that I suspect don't sell well at the store. It is a policy of the owner not to sell certain breads like the popular peasant at all, because the flour is not locally sourced. This does not stop other kinds not locally sourced from being sold. Best breakfast I've had yet in the Catskills. Just the basics: coffee, eggs, hashbrowns, toast, but most of it was distinctively good: just a bit of sweet red pepper to lift the hashbrowns, superb health-nut toast, and Smokehouse bacon that actually tasted like meat. Please bring back the banh mi patty! I've always had banh mi here because it was different from the traditional banh mi and it was tasty! The patty bursted with flavors and textures of awesomeness! Today, I went to get my beloved banh mi and I got two slices of beef that was much like roast beef made for a roast beef sandwich. No longer satisfying and kinda disappointed I paid $10 for it. I hate to complain but please bring back the original banh mi. I'm worried that all my friends I've told about the original banh mi will think I'm crazy when they go and find it to be two slices of beef and not the flavored filled patty I've described to them. As soon we entered the cafe, the clerk rudely shrieked 'don't touch the muffins!' when we were already a safe distance behind their protective plastic 'sneeze guard.' next, after ordering a coffee she again pointed rudely in the direction of the beverage. and to top it off, after pouring a drop of half-n-half into my coffee, I suffered the worst food poisoning imaginable: 24 hours later I'm still in pain!
