Been buying bread there for decades but now after the absolutely great rebuild everything has been taken to a higher level. The new building and surrounds are gorgeous. They took the leap to a modern Euro style design and thankfully stayed away from the tacky cozy pseudo mountain style. Had breakfast sandwiches, they were delicious my wife is raving about the avocado toast. The coffee is excellent and good coffee is very hard to find in this area. Awesome lunch stop, just off the Ashokan Rail Trail. We biked from the trail and had a fantastic lunch on the patio under the umbrella on a perfect Saturday. (We did 25 mi total on the rail trail. We have been frequenting the area a lot this year. Typically we go to the same spot for lunch, but my boyfriend heard that this place had good sandwiches, and honestly, I had no idea they even served lunch. We walked in later in the afternoon, there were a few tables that were vacant. We ordered a couple of sandwiches and had a seat. They brought the sandwiches to the table. They also have a water area where you get your own water. The sandwiches were very tasty and fresh. What was the best part of the sandwiches was the bread! When we ordered, we didn't know that you could choose between different breads, but afterwards we found out that you can request a specific bread. Next time I will do that. We loved the sandwich and the bread so much, we decided to buy a loaf of bread before we left and had some with soup for dinner later that evening. I have heard that they have amazing croissants, but they didn't have any by the time we arrived in the late afternoon. The breakfast menu also looked very good. I was so excited to come eat here after a weekend of snowboarding at Belleayre but ended up so disappointed. It started with the awful service. The girls behind the counter were so disinterested and unfriendly. They were knowledgeable about the items but seemed almost annoyed when I asked what things were. Then our food took forever to come out and when it did, it sat on the counter for a good five minutes before we finally asked about it and they said they weren't sure who's it was. At the price we paid, that's insane! The food itself was ok...flavor was decent but nothing 'wowed' me. The pastries and bread were just ok. I'm a nostalgic fan of this original location for over 30 years -- before critical acclaim in the NYT led to massive commercial exploitation, higher prices and reduced quality. In the early 1980's you had to line up in the wee hours for warm bread fresh out of the wood fired brick oven -- and they sold out quickly. You could only find this bread here -- where Dan Leader himself -- fresh from his French culinary travels -- was busy tending the brick ovens in his flour splattered bakers duds. His whole wheat walnut boule was exceptional, and the vibe was more personal then, and quite special. Today -- bagged and sliced BA loaves are readily available at multiple, touristy retail outlets in the Hudson Valley including Kingston, Woodstock and Rhinebeck -- or at Fairway and plenty of other retailers in NY and NJ -- most any time and day of the week. Most of these loaves are baked commercially in the Kingston plant. While variety and quantity has increased, the quality is below the original standard -- though still very good. I suspect that part of the problem is you lose freshness in the slicing, bagging and cold transport. Also, the loaves are much smaller than the originals, and you can lose quality when you scale up. Another problem for me is BA's emphasis on retail patisserie and quick bite offerings that are not what made Bread Alone a success. They seem to have dumbed down to a ubiquitous and trendy cafe formula you can find all throughout the Hudson Valley. Net net -- Dan Leader traded hand crafted Parisian authenticity -- once the hallmark of this boulangerie -- for commercial gain. I don't begrudge Dan his success of course -- but I miss the flavor and quality of what once was bread to rival the best Paris had to offer. Top Tip: Try a loaf of their nine grain (unsliced) from this location and compare the flavor against the same bread sold sliced at Fairway. You will taste the difference straight away. read more

The cream of broccoli was chock full of florets and the lentil was perhaps the most savory lentil soup I've ever spooned. At $5 and change the soup comes with your choice of roll and represents an incredible value. Our food was simply delicious -- I enjoyed a tasty walnut chicken salad sandwich on fresh sourdough bread, while my friends indulged in the hearty halloumi & pesto sandwich. It's rare to find an eatery that serves halloumi, and my companions were overly impressed by the freshness and quality of the cheese. We eat at Bread Alone in Woodstock all the time, and we used to eat at the original one in Boiceville before they began construction of the new place. This was my first time at the smaller kiosk. I popped over to get a loaf of their wonderful multigrain bread...but they were all out. (Had to go to the supermarket). And I picked up a container of their delicious Tuscan Bean soup for lunch, later. Alas, when I got it home, I saw the container was just a bit more than half full and it came with just one piece of bread which was full of air holes, and rather sparse with the beans....vs. what we usually get in Woodstock which is a full container teeming with beans and two pieces of yummy dense sourdough bread. At 8 bucks for soup and bread, I expect at least the quality and quantity we find at the Woodstock location. At least THAT feels like a real meal. Even though Boiceville is closer to our home, I don't think we'll go back there. Was very disappointed. But again...everything is delicious, so there's that. read more

I love stopping here for breakfast on my way home. Everything is such good quality and freshly prepared, although that tends to mean it is slightly more expensive than other nearby options. But so worth it. Obviously the breads are the star here, but they have great pastries and prepared sandwiches as well. I like to get the egg sandwich on a bagel - it is a solid portion with egg that is cooked perfectly (a little runny in the center). The ham is great as well, with a bit of a thicker cut. Sausage is links, which aren't as a good as a patty in my opinion. But still delicious. Baked goods are excellent, especially the fruit tarts and the muffins. I recently had a pumpkin muffin that was incredible. It was perfectly sweet and moist without being overdone, and there were little crunchy pepitas scattered throughout. Yum. read more

We ordered the Roasted Portobello Panini, the Prosciutto, Soppressata, and Provolone sandwich, and the Black Bean Burger with chipotle sauce. Everything was delicious and the breads were perfection. We capped the meal off with Chai Lattes and a Paris Apple Tart. We have another shoot scheduled up in Woodstock, so I am looking forward to sampling more of the Cafe's menu. Their plastic bread bags used in supermarkets and bulk orders could easily be replaced by compostable bags, used by many bakeries and businesses. And they could easily forgo using those horrible plastic bread clips on each bag. I've tried communicating with their customer service about this. I sponsored a lunch for a local business meeting that was $110. The staff said nice things about the food so after the sponsored lunch my colleague and I went there to eat ourselves. We ordered and paid at the counter and waited at a table for our sandwiches. As we started eating a male employee came over to tell us that we would need to use the front door as they have locked the side door. A few minutes later he came by and offered us a bag for our food in case we had leftovers. Then he literally starts sweeping the floor under our feet and table while we are eating. Imagine the dust being kicked up in our food! A few minutes later the same male employee along with a female employee wearing glasses comes to our table while we are STILL eating a sandwich to tell us they closed at 3 and we need to leave. Flabbergasted to say the least! I looked at our receipt and we paid at 2:55pm. Nobody said they close at 3, they were happy to take our money, 2x (our sponsored lunch). The experience was disgusting and rude. They could've said we are closing at 3 so we are only taking to go orders instead of the way we were treated. We have sponsored lunch from this place at least 3 times, in excess of $100 each visit. Sadly we will not be going back. We are giving 2 stars because the food tasted good. read more

I was a customer since the very beginning as it is a perfect place on Rt. 28 to stop by and warm up with a hot bowl of soup (which unfortunately is not always served hot) after a winter hike or just grab a cup of coffee and croissant after running on the Ashokan Rail Trail. I was very excited about the expansion and although I like a wide variety of breads and tasty pastries I see some serious issues that are affecting customer service and need improvement. When an owner expands a restaurant - the project should affect not only the amount of tables, but also the size of the kitchen to be able to cater to the enormous amount of customers both indoor and outdoor. What I have witnessed last Sunday was an Armageddon. 30 min wait time for the order!!! Are you people serious? This place caters to hikers who just pop in, grab food and go! I saw people getting seriously upset. I asked about soups and I was told that they were out of it by 12:30 pm? When do you serve soup then? For breakfast? since you have already run out of it 30 min to lunch time? There were more people working in the kitchen, but I saw them being overwhelmed - rightfully so because the kitchen is way too small for the current demand. There were barely any breads left, just a few cookies and, if this is how this place looks on Sunday I can only imagine what it will look like on the 3rd day of a long weekend if by mid Sunday there is almost nothing to choose from. Bread Alone has a great potential but a part of business plan has some flows, which should be fixed. Fortunately for me, I was only an observer since I brought my own sandwich with home made pate and I only had to buy tea which fortunately for me was still available.
