Plus the short drive to+from work during my lunchtime, was what brought me to The Big C. With all that, this spot also brims with..... cheese pleasing all the senses. I couldn't count the cheeses- but do believe there must've been at least a hundred (maybe I'm off) in their glass refrigerators on the left as soon as you walk in. They include artisan cheddars, cheeses from Spain, Italy, etc. I picked up a Falafel salad with a nice drizzle of a hummus dressing. The falafel balls are sizable, but the spice aren't what I'm used to and were also a tad sweet(?). I had a dish of a messy small omelet and very salty lox. The lox looked dried out but it wasn't. Two weeks ago I ordered a sandwich and a good-looking lemon meringue tart. I always sample and end up leaving with something I wouldn't of otherwise considered. The restaurant itself is casual, humble and welcoming. How could this gem be in this tiny town but there it was nestled next to a historic theatre and a bookstore across the street. It's middle eastern food so think: Good for you. I had the squash soup which was served with toasted bread slices and spinach pie. Everything tasted homemade and fresh. The presentation is colorful and so tempting. It's rare to find a restaurant made soup where salt is not the main ingredient. The orange of the squash is what you taste. Doesn't get more natural than that. The workers are courteous and helpful by explaining the ingredients and how the items are prepared. This spot also sells formerly worn clothing and other recyclable pieces which were interesting and in good shape. This is a spot definitely worth visiting. read more

Very delicious food at a reasonable price! I loved the TBALT with tempeh, with the standout ingredients being the Hudson Valley chickpea tempeh and the pressed Turkish pide bread. I also tried the salmon wrap and enjoyed it, as the salmon was very good. We are our food outside on the peaceful back patio. Taking one star off only because we came at 7:00pm and they had run out of a lot of items and were very short-staffed. Right down the street from the 1850 Inn. Even though the Inn provided a grab and go breakfast, we ate at the big cheese two days in a row. You order at the counter end they bring it to you. Everything we ordered was $10 or less and about twice what we expected. The egg sandwich was a screaming deal at $4.75 and the Cheese panini was huge. I had ordered it a tiny bit ago but got an overheated shrunken translucent thing (but that it's bones were the Turk I guess you could say it was below but ok) but that's not the magic of the Turk. Stop in here for lunch while working in the area. I ordered the vegetable soup and my friend ordered a grilled chicken sandwich with greens. I have to say my soup was very tasty and my buddy said he loved his chicken sandwich .. They have a small area inside to sit down and they also sell vintage clothing in the back of deli. This place is magical. Sweet service, delectable food and even a small vintage shop! We enjoyed some sandwiches, pastries and kombucha on the back patio. I was happy to eat outside but it was pretty hot and buggy. They could stand to add some fans or something to keep down the flies. Food was fresh and tasty. A great place in Rosendale. Everything looked delicious got the frittata for breakfast and it was delicious. Had a sweet taste with mozzarella, peppers and squash. Also got the bone broth. It was so rich and meaty. Haven't had anything like it. There's places in NYC that sell broth for healthily living. But this was so much better and tastier. I used to love going here. The deli selections were (and still are) interesting and fresh and their cheese was mostly great (though it was better in the past when they would slice it fresh for you and according to how much you wanted). But since the pandemic, the service has been atrocious. Today I went in to pick up a few deli items. There were five people behind the counter and the place was somewhat busy. I waited patiently for about ten minutes before finally a staff person asked to help me. I had barely gotten the word "yes" out of my mouth before she said, "Oh wait a minute" and walked away because someone had just stepped up to the cash register. When she took care of that person, she went off to do other things. No "I'll be right back" or "Forgive the delay." Now, I know they were busy. I know it's the pandemic. But even when they've been empty in these recent months, their service is slow and lackluster. I miss the days when knowledgeable and efficient (and I'll be honest, older) people staffed this place. I won't be going back any time soon and it's really a shame. read more

Working in the area and this is the go to place. Enjoying my coffee, breakfast and lunch. Try the baklava if they have it. The bread is pretty fantastic. Open face lox and cream cheese with salty caper is on repeat order. I so prefer eating in a small, independent cafe and eating two healthy meals rather than the guilt of a diner or fast food. Came here for the cheese plate, which we found out is not on the menu anymore but since it was not busy at the time they agreed to make one. Everything on this plate was SO delicious, we devoured the entire thing!They sell a good variety of cheese and the worker was very kind and knowledgeable and helped us choose a few to purchase. I come here WAY too frequently. The breakfast sandwiches are AMAZING and I always add pesto for a fresher taste to my morning. The baked goods are also super sweet and I always find myself craving a blondje during my work day. I will say I'm not a huge fan of the coffee selection, but I have gotten an almond milk cappuccino and did enjoy. If you live on Main Street it's also nice to swing by to pick up eggs or veggies. Omg. My absolutely favorite place to eat in the Hudson valley. I have a million food allergies and where I can healthfully eat is so restricted. Here I can have the most delicious middle eastern food. Incredible hummus, roasted artichoke hearts, divine smoked salmon, toasted mung bean patties, on and on. This is the hidden culinary gem of the whole area ...plus adorable consignment shop in the back for the some great vintage clothes. I've been coming to the big cheese for years now and used to love it. Lately, maybe the past 5 or 6 times I've gone, I have been disappointed. The staff is always kind and there is a great selection of cheese and other pantry times but every time my friends and I have ordered off of the menu lately our food has either been cold or just lacking flavor. Sad to give up on it but we have had a few too many poor experiences lately. Most recently we ordered a quiche and the feta cheese was rancid! And in addition the owner seems to belittle staff in front of customers and it's just a bad vibe. Again, the staff has always been great but something's gotta change with this menu. read more

Everything is delicious!! You can't go wrong. Sat outside on a gorgeous early summer day with my Falafel salad bowl and enjoyed every bite. Hummus is so nice and garlicky. Yum! Salad greens are nice too and the falafel had a nice crisp outside and good spice. Friends at the table were thrilled with their choices as well. This is a wonderful destination for a summertime bicycle ride. There is a good-sized outdoor dining area and room for bicycles. Overall the vibe is laid back and artsy. In the back is a store that sells women's wraps and other such items. The lamb burger was good, and was served on soft, fresh bread. The sides are interesting, e.g. artichoke hearts and dolmas. One complaint: there was no plant milk available for the coffee, at least one time there was not. Over several visits I have grown to like this place a lot, and others I have introduced it to felt the same way. Very good food, beautifully and unusually seasoned & prepared, served with a dressed green salad (dressing made with unexpected and wonderful ingredients -- Kristina, our staff person, said she just made it up one day!). We had eggplant parm (never saw or tasted one like it before -- scrumptious!), spanakopita (wonderful & flaky), kale salad, and gluten-free pizza (also unusually flavored but definitely one of the best pizzas I've had in quite a while). Combine with friendly, conversational staff and you've got a winner. Plus the cooler with all those wonderful cheeses in there -- I haven't seen Wensleydale available locally in years. I gave this place a few chances and now I am so done. I will never go back. I bought a few items here only to find out when I got home that they were expired. I guess rotating stock isn't a major concern here because it happened more than once to me. Another time I waited about 15 -20 minutes for someone to help me but I guess my business wasn't important enough for the lady behind the counter. Her conversation with someone (possibly a co-worker, visitor) had a higher priority than an actual customer. And what kind of place that serves food, also has used clothing for sale? YUCK! I'll go to the Salvation Army for used clothing and a real cheese store for my food purchases thank you very much. You are not missing a thing if you never ever go here, trust me. Unfortunately, I have to echo other reviews about the poor service. I called in an order to 10 mins prior and waited an additional 15 minutes upon arriving. What did I order? A falafel wrap and a cup of soup. Was there anyone else waiting? No. Also, upon arriving both coffees were empty. I notified the counter woman, but at the time of my departure, not a single pot was ready. They also charged me for the half-cup of bottom of the barrel coffee grinds too.
