    Heart-like shape in the toast

Personally I think some of the best breakfast meals you can have are some of the local hole in the wall/mom and pop shops. My wife and I love going to places like this while traveling and despite that had yet to go to Brea Lu even though it's less than 10 minutes away from us. When you walk through the door you step into a large open space with tables and booths all over the place along with a large bar with lots of stools. They do appear to have a little bit of space available for a few more tables but that may become too much. Also thankfully they have their own parking lot, street parking available if that's full though. Staff were friendly and we were sat right away and food and drinks took no time at all. Only real knock was no check in about how the food was or if we needed anything. So, while minimal complaint, service could have been a little better. Onto the part you'd care about most, the food. They have all the usual breakfast staples you'd expect from a spot like this plus daily specials if you want something a little different. I enjoyed their breakfast tacos while my wife enjoyed their homemade cornbeef hash. The tacos were delicious and overfilled to the point a lot fell out and had to be eaten by fork. My wife said their cornbeef hash is the best homemade version she has ever had. We both found the potatoes to be on the colder side and lacking seasoning/flavor. My wife also wished they had jams on the table for the toast. Prices were a little higher than some similar vibe restaurants but not totally absurd. So overall, we were pretty happy with our meals and will return. A solid local establishment that I think is worth checking out at least once.

My son and I stopped in their newer location for an early morning breakfast at opening (7am). The private parking lot was easy and convenient, much preferred to the issues of coming on/off the rotary into their old location. Only one other table had beat us there so there was ample space in the restaurant. We were told to sit wherever we liked. The one waitress that was there seemed to be handling her tasks without any problems. My son noticed that there were many coloring pages hanging at the hostess station and asked for her to bring over supplies. She did with a smile. We ordered a kids pancake, which came out in the shape of Mickey and a florentine benedict. We've ordered these same dishes at many restaurants over the last few weeks, as we have a standing Sunday morning date, and I'd summarize the menu and food as pretty average. They were good dishes, but weren't standouts.

Stopped here for breakfast the other day at the new location and it was good. They have a lot of tables but only a few were full. It still took quite a while to get food even though there were only a few people there. I got a burrito and my boyfriend out the eggs Benedict and they were both really great but a bit overpriced. Almost 20 dollars for a burrito is a lot. Overall I do enjoy the food but wish it was faster and a little cheaper.

Food was simple. Wasn't bad by any means but to be honest not anything that would draw me back. I had the All American Breakfast Sandwich (ham egg and cheese on an English muffin) that came with fried potatoes. I also had a coffee. The atmosphere was not to my liking; wide open space, very bright overhead shop/office style lights. Did not give the warm and cozy feel. This is just personal preference though. Service on the other hand was great. I was greeted and seated quickly. Server arrived quickly and was attentive throughout my visit. Also kind and polite. Wait time on food was minimal, it was out in a flash. Pricing was ok. However, as for the coffee pricing like all other restaurants these days they are trying to maximize profits on the drinks. I paid $2.99 which ended up being a single cup of coffee. In total $14.02 + tip.

Super disorganized. The service was horrible and some of the girls were very rude. Our silverware was dirty. The wait time before someone even acknowledged us after we were sat was ridiculous. Most definitely will not be back again. The food was gross. My daughter's pancake was burnt and the potatoes weren't even cooked all way and the food was cold! When the pancake was brought to the managers attention she said "Well our pancakes are big so they have to stay in the grill longer" and was argumentative about taking it off the bill. DONT WASTE YOUR TIME OR MONEY HERE!

A gem of a place for a great hometown breakfast feel. The food was fresh, hot and delicious. The space is large and open so you for sure don't feel crowded. The menu for breakfast is sure to satisfy your appetite. Don't miss out, put this on your list.

Highly recommended: salt cod, foie gras truffles, pasta with guanciale. I had a smash burger (special) which was a bit too much -- needed one fewer item from the rich salty umami family of flavors, every bite good on its own but a LOT as a dish. Service was wonderful; my friend mentioned that she loved chocolate mousse but was too full for dessert, and our server brought us a to go portion as a bonus with the check. And it was awesome (topped with hazelnuts, sea salt, and a drizzle of olive oil, very good idea well executed).

We got a text reminder as well as phone call reminder leading up to our reservation. On the day of our reservation we were greeted with a warm smiled and directed to our seats. Since we visited on Thanksgiving Day it was a prix fix menu which included the following: -Bread and Turkey Jam -Winter Squash Soup -Chicory & Arugula Salad -Roasted Turkey Breast -Braised Short Ribs -Ilma's Maple Bourbon Pie -Pumpkin Budin This menu was specifically made for Thanksgiving so I imagine guests who have to wait until the next Thanksgiving to enjoy the fare. What I can say is that the soup was my favorite and the turkey breast was not in the slightest dry. The short ribs were my friends favorite and we both loved the pumpkin budin. Service was polite and efficient and te music was upbeat and lively, despite the restaurant emiting a dark romantic vibe. I'm really thankful that they had reservations available and that the food was delicious since many restaurants in the area were already booked out. Thank you Wayside Tavern for a delicious meal!

Before I rip them a new one, let me be totally up front and say the service was very good. Like many places in the Portland area, they're short staffed, and the people who work there are doing the best they can. Friendly, like genuinely friendly and nice waitstaff. They're doing the best they can with too few people. So, to be clear if any management read this? Your staff is fantastic. The food? That's another story. They used to have things on the menu like roasted Brussels Sprouts with all kinds of delicious. There was a pot roast, cooked over three days, which melted in your mouth, with truffle oil and parsnips and carrots. The cocktails? WAY above par. Now you may as well go to Applebees. Over seasoned, boring, and generally NOT worth the money by a long shot. It just tastes like all the other places who use Sysco or Gordon foods. I had the burger, which was so average. I mean REMARKABLY average. Yes, the lettuce on it was actually not just boring iceberg, but that doesn't make up for serving someone a mass produced, firmly packed slab with way too much salt. It says it's some fancy farm beef, but it sure as heck didn't taste like it. The dish my wife had was similar. Some decent ingredients but for the most part it was literally no better than what you'd get in something in a mall. WAY too much salt, way too little flavor. I also ordered a Manhattan. In a Manhattan, the forward flavor should be the whiskey (rye or bourbon or whatever). All I could taste was vermouth. AND it was served in a highball glass with a massive ice cube, and it was warm. The ingredients should go in a cocktail shaker or mixing glass, with ice, then stirred for at least 15 seconds while stirring. It should be served in a cocktail glass like a coup or a martini glass which has been chilled. Mine was in a highball glass. Not sure what happened, but I'm sure profits had something to do with it. You've got dozens of better choices in easy walking distance.

Thankfully they moved us to a corner/booth which was very nice of them. Even in the corner it was still a little cramped which is my reason for not giving it 5 stars. The pasta dish with lobster in a red sauce was divine. Full of other seafood in addition to the lobster like mussels and clams too. It was definitely messy but the flavor was fantastic. Tons of garlic which we love. The octopus appetizer was also delicious. Very charred which normally I wouldn't like but it worked very well with this dish. We both had to order the brown butter halibut, good God that was so delicious. Insanely delicious! We were told that there is one chef that dedicates their time cooking this dish as well as the scallops. Can't beat that!
