So this is a long standing establishment in the Portland area that is on its third building. And it's just... Not good enough for what it charges. The service is fine. Nothing bad about it. The food is fine. It is standard diner fare. But my meat breakfast burrito itself was roughly $21. They charge $2 to put the scramble in a flour tortilla. The mimosa I had was of poor quality and was $11. My husband just did the breakfast tacos and a coffee. Our bill was over $60. Nothing was bad, but it's just far too expensive for the quality of the food. We can and have had the same meal of the same quality for $40 down the road at Stacks. It's a shame that some of the long term staples of the Portland area are pricing out the locals but until prices come down, can't really recommend it here read more

A friend and I met here for breakfast on a Sunday at 9am. It wasn't busy at all, which was surprising for any breakfast place in Maine. There was plenty of parking for us in the private lot to the right of the building. We were greeted and seated within seconds of walking through the door. There's a lot of sun exposure, for the window seats, choose wisely. LOL Our server Logan was great. He was friendly and personable. We asked him about the "weird" item on the menu and he agreed, he didn't understand it and has only seen one person order it. If you are curious about what I'm referring to, you will have to see for yourself. Unfortunately, no one in the restaurant had it, as I was curious to see what it looked like and why they ordered it. My friend ordered the classic eggs benedict that comes with homefries. I order THE Pancake with blueberries and a side of DELICIOUS bacon. Everything looked great and was presented nicely. My friend said her dish lacked some flavor, however, it was helped by the salt and pepper on the table. My pancake was gigantic - literally bigger than the plate it was served on. It was a heavy pancake - and it was thick. It was ok - definitely recommend the real maple syrup, even though it's an extra cost. I ate half of the pancake. I prefer fluffy buttermilk pancakes, this was more "bready". It was ok enough, where I wanted to bring the leftovers home. It's convenient, it's local, service is excellent! Personally I think some of the best breakfast meals you can have are some of the local hole in the wall/mom and pop shops. My wife and I love going to places like this while traveling and despite that had yet to go to Brea Lu even though it's less than 10 minutes away from us. When you walk through the door you step into a large open space with tables and booths all over the place along with a large bar with lots of stools. They do appear to have a little bit of space available for a few more tables but that may become too much. Also thankfully they have their own parking lot, street parking available if that's full though. Staff were friendly and we were sat right away and food and drinks took no time at all. Only real knock was no check in about how the food was or if we needed anything. So, while minimal complaint, service could have been a little better. Onto the part you'd care about most, the food. They have all the usual breakfast staples you'd expect from a spot like this plus daily specials if you want something a little different. I enjoyed their breakfast tacos while my wife enjoyed their homemade cornbeef hash. The tacos were delicious and overfilled to the point a lot fell out and had to be eaten by fork. My wife said their cornbeef hash is the best homemade version she has ever had. We both found the potatoes to be on the colder side and lacking seasoning/flavor. My wife also wished they had jams on the table for the toast. Prices were a little higher than some similar vibe restaurants but not totally absurd. So overall, we were pretty happy with our meals and will return. A solid local establishment that I think is worth checking out at least once. read more

Let me start this review by saying that Brea Lu is a Westbrook staple, and I respect all the ways that they have contributed to the community through fundraisers and participation with the schools. It's definitely one of the few breakfast spots in the area and you can count on it always being open and ready to serve. Having said that, I think the food and atmosphere are incongruent to the menu prices. We've been a couple of times and I've always been underwhelmed. Just a few examples - the home fries need either more seasoning or more cook time so they get some nice texture. The scrambled eggs are tight and could use a hit of salt and/or butter. The coffee is not great. The pancakes are HUGE but not super fluffy or delicious. I think the best thing I've had here has been the corned beef hash and that was on the other end of the spectrum, too salty for my tastes. The dining room is wide open, which feels cold instead of welcoming. The servers are kind and efficient, which is a nice touch, but I can see how they would be stretched thin when the place fills up. As mentioned before, menu prices are as high as a nice Portland cafe/eatery ($15 - $20 per plate), but the presentation, quality, and atmosphere is more like a diner, without that craveable greasy-spoon flavor. Hoping some small tweaks to the food and maybe filling in the space a bit more will improve this spot that seems to be a local favorite. read more

I recall enjoying at least one meal at the old location and was disappointed when it closed. The old location was warm and homey, but also rather small and cramped in my recollection. In contrast, the new space is large and open with ample parking. But it's perhaps *too* large - the tables for diners only seem to cover about half the room, and the rest is just sort of .. empty space. The food has been very good each time I've been recently and the specials are appealing. But the menu is awfully short - one side of one page for breakfast and lunch each - and it feels almost like a contradiction when you consider the space. My son and I stopped in their newer location for an early morning breakfast at opening (7am). The private parking lot was easy and convenient, much preferred to the issues of coming on/off the rotary into their old location. Only one other table had beat us there so there was ample space in the restaurant. We were told to sit wherever we liked. The one waitress that was there seemed to be handling her tasks without any problems. My son noticed that there were many coloring pages hanging at the hostess station and asked for her to bring over supplies. She did with a smile. We ordered a kids pancake, which came out in the shape of Mickey and a florentine benedict. We've ordered these same dishes at many restaurants over the last few weeks, as we have a standing Sunday morning date, and I'd summarize the menu and food as pretty average. I will start this review off by reminding everyone that this is the NEW location on Main Street and not a review from the old place on the corner in Westbrook. I had some things from the old location and I thought it was ok. Was not anything to write mom home about but got the job done for what is needed in Westbrook. I stopped in yesterday for some breakfast and I was not one bit disappointed. First thing I noticed was the size of the restaurant. It is spacious and even has a full bar area to sit at if you don't want to sit at a table or in a booth. The service is and has always been a great thing here. Prompt greeting, attentive waitstaff and the place was very clean for turning over tables so quickly. With the closing of River's Edge, this is a needed thing for the area. A good breakfast/lunch spot. I had the Irish benedict and it was fresh and delicious with a homemade hash under succulent and delicious poached eggs with a creamy rich sauce drizzled over the top. The coffee was flowing and the smiles were had. The only thing I would have any complaints of was the price of some of the basic items ... I mean $19 for a benedict is a bit much but other than that, check this place out for some breakfast and local fare. Will be back. read more

I love dining local! I went to high school with the owner of this establishment and today did not disappoint! They always have a specials board and today I chose the Strawberry Pineapple Mimosa. It was perfect, the right balance of both the fruits! The other item I ordered of the specials menu, Boston Cream pie stuffed French toast OMG! I've given this place a decent amount of tries at both their old location and new one and each time I leave somewhat disappointed. Went the other day for lunch and the staff were rather rude and came off as annoyed. No kids menu which is rather surprising because looking in social media it looks like the owner has kids and to not have a kids menu in what they claim is a family restaurant is rather off putting. My wife and I went here for breakfast on Sunday, April 7. When we walked in there were 5 tables seated and all but one were already eating. There were also at least 4 wait staff hanging around. Just wanted to set the stage. The coffee was very strong. I don't mind, but my wife couldn't drink it. We ordered our food - I had 2 eggs, ham, home fries and a pancake on the side. My wife had 2 eggs, bacon, toast and a small pancake on the side. Now, the place wasn't very busy at all - everyone was already eating except for us and one other couple. With that in mind, our food took about 20 minutes to arrive at the table. My pancake was huge - filled the entire dinner plate. It had absolutely no taste. Other places we go, at least they have a taste. This one had none. My over-easy eggs should have had a runny yolk, mine was almost totally over cooked. The home fries were about 1/4" square. For being so small, they weren't consistently cooked - some hard, some mushy. They are also supposed to be seasoned, but they were also very bland. When they brought our food, my wife's pancake did not arrive. Our waitress said it is coming. Ok, no problem, maybe she just couldn't carry everything. NOPE. About halfway through eating, we asked about the pancake and again were told it is coming. So, my wife finished eating and still no pancake. It finally showed up a full 10 minutes after she finished her food. REALLY??!! Someone in the kitchen obviously forgot about it and so did our waitress. If it was going to be that late, we could have been asked if she still wanted it. Nope. My wife started eating it, took 3 bites and found it also very bland and didn't even finish it. Our waitress didn't even bother to ask us how our food was. My wife's home fries ranged in size from the 1/4" square to about 1/2" square and also ranged in doneness. With all those issues, I normally would have asked for a manager and complained and asked that at least her pancake be taken off the bill. But, I wanted to see what would happen. You think our waitress would have offered to take the pancake off the bill because it didn't even show up for 10 minutes after my wife finished eating. Or even offered to take it off the bill because of the other issues. But no, not a thing. Overall, it was a poor experience and I will not go back and I will not recommend that anyone ever go there. read more
