I went here for brunch with a friend. I ordered 3 blueberry pancakes with bacon. To begin with there is a $4.00 charge to add meet to your pancakes. Just the 3 pancakes were $8.99. The bacon arrived completely burnt, I mean it was black. When I said something to the waitress she informed me that most of their customers liked it that way. She did bring me a new order. The pancakes were even worse. They had a horrible taste and wore raw. The waitress offered me news ones. By the time they arrived of friend was done eating. When the new pancakes arrived the waitress informed me they were perfect ,has they had been tested in the kitchen. They were still terrible. I became sick before even leaving the restaurant. I found out from a former employee that they use instead , pancake batter with artificial blueberries in that they also use the imitation butter flavored spray to cook with. Most of the fried foods or frozen and tossed in the fryer. Soups, Chowder, and chill or canned. Other food is pre-made and just warmed up. My friend was also charged $1.50 extra for gravy on their mashed potatoes and $1.25 for a slice of bread. Other friend who went here was charged $2.00 extra for there eggs and $1.75 extra for onion in their home fries. We were all shocked to be told that they rounded up on the bill and would not get are change back if we did not have the exact cash. Breakfast with my 90 year old mom - sometimes a challenge - but not here! Katie was our server and she has been running from kitchen to table with a smile. I had a breakfast sandwich with bacon - asked for bacon crisp and it was awesome - might have liked a cheddar cheese but that is quibbling. Shredded hash browns were ok. When we went to order there was a poor choices and few selections of sides to go with our entree. The food was cold,carrots undercooked,and my mother's liver was overcooked. We visited the Fairground Cafe for breakfast this morning. We have been before several times, but it has been a few years so we decided to give it another try. Sadly, the experience was about the same - nothing special, but decent food. The service was sorely lacking. The sign that greats you instructs you to wait to be seated; however, once someone does finally come, they just gesture to an open table that made me wonder why we had to wait at all. Our server took a while to come to the table, so we were ready to order when she arrived. It felt weird, like we were rushing her though. No complaints about the food, but no accolades either. The restaurant was busy, so there is clearly a need for a family friendly place like this. Some front of the house management would go a long way to improve the experience here. read more

We decided to get dinner out after a very long day. It started off well, the waitress was nice, food came out quickly and was decent. The problem started when the bill came. My meal was $4 dollars more than the menu price and my husbands was $3 more. When I questioned the waitress she said there was a disclaimer at the bottom of the menu that some price were higher than what the menu stated. It was done in a pale color instead of a vivid noticeable red. She explained that they have been waiting months and months for the owner to approve and print out new menus. I complained that she could have warned us, she said there was also a sign about it out front. As we exited the restaurant we looked for the sign. It was there, but mixed in with other promotional signs from other places and again, we didn't notice it on the way in as it was not on the door, but it was about 2 feet away from the door. I use to go there with my dad years ago, but the last 2 times we went weren't very good for various reasons. The only reason I went back this time was because I had a gift card to use that was given to my dad the Christmas before he passed away. One of my favorite places to eat when I used to live here Maine. So happy to be able to visit again and dine here. My favorite before was the Haddock Sandwich but I am now a vegetarian so I settled for the Veggie Wrap. They don't have it in the menu but they were so nice to be able to accommodate it. The food is very good, the staff is always considerate and helpful and the location is great. Right off 295 so it's right in the heart of the mid coast. My family and I ended up here because our favorite breakfast place was mobbed due to a nice Sunday morning and it being Father's Day. That being said, I have wanted to try this place for awhile anyway so we decided to give it a try. I have to say I was underwhelmed....... the hostess and waitstaff were very friendly but were overloaded, very slow and inattentive at times. Their friendliness was the only thing that prevented a 2 star rating. The food was completely hit or miss. My oldest daughters pancakes were excellent, yet my youngest daughter's hash browns were cold and raw. My wife said her dish was cold as well. Our waiter never came back to check on us after placing our order. The place was not busy it was 2 o'clock in the afternoon. We waited over 30 minutes after placing our order and decided to ask about the status. When we finally caught the eye of another server she left and came back to tell us that they had an issue with with their internet and the kitchen never received our order. Yet, tables that arrived after us and after we placed our order received their meal. The waitress was very irritated with us once we told her we were leaving. I used to really enjoy going here with my family. It was never anything fancy, but the simple food was always well done and reliable. I recently went for breakfast to celebrate my mother's birthday. Again, my expectation was simple comfort food. Unfortunately, my eggs were raw, bacon was very undercooked, and my potatoes were cold. Everyone else had a similar experience. I walked into the restaurant at 7, had coffee and water by 7:03, and 2 egg's over easy, sausage, home frie, and rye toast by 7:10, despite there being at least 20 people there. I was not impressed one bit by this restaurant. My husband swore by the steak and eggs. I got a chef salad with "chefs choice of veggies" which was diced up iceberg lettuce and tomatoes. Then meat and cheese. The egg yolks were grayish. The steak in the steak omelette had zero taste and was very dry. The kids meals looked decent, and the burger my brother ordered looked good. There was only one waitress, but two tables seated. She did keep apologizing for the wait, but considering it's only two tables and there were other people actually working in the restaurant, the wait shouldn't have been as bad as it was. The table that sat after us was served first, that alone is frustrating. I will say the restaurant is charming and clean. Perhaps it is best experienced as a single diner. I don't know, I won't be back. I'm sure my husband will continue to go there for a quick lunch. He is a plumber and did work in their kitchen before and said the kitchen was clean, which is obviously important. read more

Nice restaurant. It has plenty of room for just a couple going out or a large family event. Some nights they have live music, they do have a small bar and a couple of tvs. Their breakfast is served all day and that is a bonus for this family. Love having breakfast for dinner sometimes. Topsham Fairground Cafe Two Words: Comfort Food! Another gem that my mom introduced me to. Toward the end of her life, she had a very short list of restaurants she would go to and this was in the top 5 in this area. This place is consistent when it comes to breakfast food and service, both are very good. The staff is welcoming and quick. They have a casual way about them that puts you at ease and makes it seem like you are at their house for a meal. I usually go around 9am on Saturdays when I am in the area and haven't had to wait more than a couple of minutes for them to clean off a booth table. After a table leaves, they typically have it cleaned and set within 5 minutes or less. The place is a quite large for a breakfast all day type of place and can accommodate large groups and there is a room in the back for private parties that are 20 or more. Overall very accommodating place. Some of my favorite foods: Grilled blueberry muffin - buttery crisp and moist - YUM Bacon - crispy, just the way I like it Blueberry pancakes - a large serving that is difficult to finish for most people, not me, but most people :) French Toast Corned Beef - my naughty treat - tender and crisp on the edges Homefries - great flavor and a little greasy - no need for kethup on mine. Any omelet - hold the onions, they can be a bit harsh. Lunch/Dinner - I have had dinner once here, it was ok. This is not a go-to place for seafood. I had a fried scallops and fried haddock the flavor was ok, but the batter coating was a bit soggy and fell right off, so I was left eating coating and then the fish...both were good, just wish it was together Overall - One of my favorite menu breakfast places in the area. It was my very first time at Fairgrounds Cafe; probably the worst time to go there. Barely staffed but no excuse for the food. It was nice of them to substitute shrimp for scallops but for $22 I expected better than totally tasteless haddock and POPCORN shrimp. If I had known that, I would have skipped it. Actually, I should have just left but I reasoned 'how bad could it be?'. The reason I was there? I was starving and Kume was closed for lack of help. An Arby's sandwich would have been a better option, and I am in no danger of setting foot into the Cafe again. My wife and I frequent this cafe often. They serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner with full bar. This establishment sits in the middle of a strip mall Hannaford being the anchor store. The wait is always short this is a amazing considering it is always a full breakfast crowd. Solid restaurant spot just off I-95 if you are heading north/south, or in the Topsham-Brunswick area and want a hearty, no frills breakfast or lunch. Used to come here years ago in my pre-Yelp days. A friend suggested it and glad I made it back. They have chicken-fried steak, which in Maine is always a plus. Not sure I know of another place that has it. Very good version, and the gravy came on the side, which I liked. Their hash browns are not tater tot variety, but are shredded, which is also a plus. After living in Topsham for six years, I figured it was about time I check out this place that I have walked past more times than I can count when shopping in the Topsham Fair Mall. The atmosphere was a spacious which is deceiving from the outside. When we went, it was decorated for Christmas with their year around circus themed memorabilia on the wall. Also deceiving is that there is a bar in here. I was not expecting that given the name, what they are known for, and their hours (Sunday is the only day open past 3:30pm). Our waitress was prompt, polite, and patient with my husband's dietary needs. The food came out within 15 minutes and this is with a fairly full room of people. Impressive. My husband got the veggie burritos with home fries and I got eggs benedict with hash browns. My husband stated that his burrito was ok, nothing earth shattering, but worthy of eating. My meal on the other hand was a bit off. To begin with, as the waitress put our meals down and then noted out loud that my hash browns didn't look very cooked. She asked if I wanted them sent back. Although this was very polite, I would have rather the cooking staff notice this before both meals were sent out. My husband would refuse to eat if my meal was not ready,so instead of letting my husband's food go cold I said it was ok. I figured at least the main part would be good. Unfortunately, the sauce was almost bitter and barely luke warm. I ended up scraping most of it off. I understand this is not high quality dining, but if you can't execute a good hollandaise sauce, then don't bother putting it on the menu. If your cooking crew can't notice that they are sending out raw hash browns then time for a cooking review class. Maybe I hit it on the wrong day and maybe it's their lunches that I need to try out to be won over. Until then, this place disappointed me. read more
