I don't know if I can really write a thorough review since I only ever get breakfast sandwiches and coffee here. Still, it's that one thing that I can count on Punky's for in a pinch. Cheap, comforting, and classic - that bacon egg and cheese is honestly the closest I can get around here to the sort of breakfast cart fare you can find in NYC. Plus, no matter how long it's been since I was last here, the lady at the counter ALWAYS seems to recognize me and give me a warm welcome. Too bad the coffee is only hot - no iced coffee. read more

Have driven by this place a million times and have never been in - it's really hard to tell when they are open or not and they have odd hours. Anyway - finally went today to pick up some sandwiches. We got a double Italian, a BLT sub, a turkey Italian, and a hamburger. I cannot tell you how awful all of it was. The sub rolls were absolutely stale and dry / days old at least. My daughter could not get at the turkey - it smelled bad and had very strange texture. My BLT on a stale roll with precooked microwave bacon was barely edible. A couple of razor thin slices of tomato. I'll say that the lettuce appeared to be fresh. Also stale rolls on the other sandwiches and similarly good quality. Though the lady at the register was very nice and friendly - the store is not super clean and is very disorganized - with random supplies and equipment in customer areas. They have a pegboard menu, but many of the things they don't actually sell...not sure why they don't take them down. Anyway - bummer that it turned out like this. read more

Usually have a great experience at punkys. Not so much this time went in to get a steak and cheese with onions and no peppers. The first order made was an egg sandwich not a steak and cheese, the second time I told them my order they gave me a steak egg and cheese breakfast sandwich so I told them for a 3rd time I WOULD LIKE A LG STEAK AND CHEESE SANDWICH WITH ONIONS AND NO PEPPERS. The 3rd sandwich I got was a LG steak and cheese loaded with peppers. Not sure what was going on but overall a really bad experience. read more

Four plus stars for food and 1 star for availability. I hope that Punky's is actually a front for some really cool illegal activity, because it's the only explanation for how a small sandwich shop can afford to be closed so often. Forget Christmas or Easter, I'm pretty sure they'd close for Purim. Saturdays? Closed. Sundays? Closed. After 5 pm? Closed. Punky's closes for more snow days than the Portland School District. Thankfully, they've started updating their facebook page daily. So the point is, don't go out of your way to come here without checking facebook first. If you happen to be driving by and see the open sign, the breakfast sandwiches are some of my favorite in the city. For under $4 you get a massive amount of meat and fried eggs on the most pillowy buttered roll I could imagine. It's delicious. The ready made meals that rotate daily are also very popular and easy to re-heat. Sandwiches are solid with fresh meats piled high. This isn't a convenience store though. There's coffee and soda but no alcohol or household products. So, Punky's...I'm not sure what you're secretly up to, but I am glad that you're open some of the time. read more

I have to say, I am ashamed that this was my first time trying Punky's, seeing as I've lived down the street for over 2 years. However, after today's visit I will most definitely be making up for lost time! I swung by to grab a couple things for lunch and was glad to see so many cars in the parking lot, since it often looks empty. The daily casseroles all looked great, and I had a hard time deciding... I ended up going with pure comfort food- shepherds pie and chicken pot pie. I knew I had to try the chicken pot pie since they were running low on it, so clearly it's popular. Both were delicious but WOW the chicken pot pie was the winner. It was creamy, thick, and very very filling. Was full before I was even halfway through, so now I have quite a bit of left overs (and definitely not complaining). Can't wait to go back and try out some of their sandwiches too! read more

My family and I gave been Punkys fans for years. Punkys has been our go to for breakfast wraps, a great selection of Green Mountain Coffee and inexpensive casseroles for lunch and dinner. First off, this place is FAR too good to just be open from 8 - 6 M-F. No weekends? Bah-humbug! That said, if you're considering a visit to Punky's (or delivery) here's what I know. The breakfast sandwiches are hearty and a good call if you're in the mood for an AM pick-me-up. They don't make/sell muffins and that sort of thing, so really come here if you're hoping for more savory fare. For lunch, you get a good sandwich/sub for the money and Punky's offers a huge variety of options. I've really enjoyed the Thanksgiving sandwich (turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce) as well as the chicken salad. The onion rings are top notch, though the fries are nothing to write home about. Punky's offers a bunch of pre-packaged desserts if you have a sweet tooth. They're not bad in a pinch. It can sometimes take the staff a little time to put together your order as they're busy, so if you're picking up I recommend you call in your order ahead of time. read more

I haven't been here in a long time and decided to stop by for lunch. It was pretty busy and I looked at the hot food choices. They had several to choose from and today the chicken pot pie looked particlarly inviting, so I ordered it. I was given a large size portion, which was plenty, and all for $6.50. The crust was moist and flaky with a generous portion of tender white chunks of chicken. The white gravy was fantastic. I didn't seem to see any veggies and a hearty amount of peas and or carrots would have made this already awesome lunch much better. I certainly will return. I've been going here for about 12 years now, ever since they were located on Forest Ave. I've only ever had lunch here, and that's because they always have great comfort food pre-packaged lunch specials for super cheap that you can grab and go - think mac n cheese, chicken pot pie, etc. for about $5 a container. And their portions are huge! I was getting the mac sweats during a recent encounter with one of their mac n cheese lunch specials. Counter staff is extremely friendly and efficient. I imagine they're used to a lunch rush of people who need to grab and go, and so they're great at placing orders and getting you your food quickly. The inside has the look and feel of a mom and pop deli/convenience store The parking situation outside - at least during my last visit - was a bit ambiguous. No parking spaces anywhere painted in the parking lot, so I guess you just need to set the tone if you are the first person to park there, or go with the flow of the other patrons. If you're looking for a new breakfast or lunch spot and the idea of inexpensive, freshly-prepared comfort food is appealing to you, then stop in and check it out. read more

I went for "soup" but no soup. I felt that The menu options for food that I normally feel like eating, was limited. But the menu itself is not limited as far as different types of sandwiches you can get and breakfast and other grill foods. I had a veggie burrito and the special of the day "chicken pot pie" to go. Both were really tasty. They were reasonably priced and the portion was average to large. The burrito was a bit non-distinct and could have used some rice or chunkier veggies because it was a bit soupy inside with salsa and sour cream and very soft squishy beans and minced veggies. Chicken pot pie needed more pie. There were no rice dishes on the menu anywhere. The store itself was a bit bare bones but clean. Some tables to eat at but not so inviting. There are some local amateur artwork displayed and lots of free local periodicals to read if you did want to hang around or while you're waiting for your food to be prepared. Like I said, food was tasty. I also had a cheese danish that was quite good. I don't know if I'll go back but maybe to try breakfast or a sandwich. Staff was friendly. read more

Ok, I have to say I was a bit skeptical when my boyfriend pointed out the unassuming building one day while we were driving home. However, once he started talking about enormous sandwiches for under $5, I was sold. We've gone a few times since. It's truly the perfect spot for a quick, super affordable lunch, especially if you're on the run. They're fast and friendly. I'm a big fan of the veggie italian but I would recommend adding banana peppers and jalapenos for some extra pizzaaz! The daily hot specials are pretty tempting and ridiculously affordable. Also, the BF swears by the thanksgiving sandwich--YUM. Haven't tried the burritos or the pizza yet... Overall, I definitely appreciate the total lack of pretension and fluff at this place. I'd always heard great things about the service and the general pricing points of the subs, soups and sandwiches at Punky's, but I'd never heard anything about how the food actually tastes. After a few visits to give the place an honest shot at winning my patronage, it was more than obvious why I'd never heard a peep about taste, flavor or palatability whenever Punky's was mentioned in a conversation about sandwich shops in Portland. It's because there isn't anything nice to say. The food is wholly unremarkable. I mean, it is just as bland and plain as can be. And yet, this place has been surviving for years. It's confounding ... To a degree, I guess the old adage "you get what you pay for" rings true here, but you'd just be better off not paying for anything at Punky's and getting something somewhere else. read more

My job is not too far from Punky's so I go there fairly often (several times per week). Breakfast sandwiches and roll ups are good. At lunch time he usually puts out three casseroles and a soup, plus sandwiches, roll ups, and salads. The Greek salad is good even though not much like what I had in Greece. The chef's salad is a whole meal by itself. The various casseroles are almost always good. Some go over the top of my grease tolerance, and some that have tomato sauce are slightly sweet. I can't tell if the sweetness comes from the onions or if he's adding a bit of sugar. I like tomato things to be slightly acidic, but I know many people like the sweet. Prices are reasonable. The potato salad is possibly the best in Portland. read more

Great local shop. Great prices and lots of fresh, homemade items you can't get anywhere else. They sell a ton of food, so its always fresh! So many great items, you'll have to come back for more. Daily hot lunch specials for $5 that fill you up and don't require any waiting. Amazing mac 'n' cheese w/ ham, beef stroganoff, shepherds pie, chicken pot pie, the list goes on, portions are huge. The same items are available from the cooler at all times, selection varies. They roast their own turkey and slice it thick. Try the Thanksgiving sub or wrap. The Steak and Cheese is huge, and for the price, I'd say its the best in Portland. The burritos are what got me started here, they're big, and only $6, chicken, steak, sweet potato, or veg. Went to Punky's the other day. I used to live in Portland and went there often. But living in Old Orchard Beach the past ten years, I don't usually go to Portland all that often. I stopped by and it had that classic vibe of an old, quality sandwich shop. There were various other food selections than sandwiches that looked delicious. They included pasta, shepherds pie and Mac and cheese. Sodas, whoopie pies and plenty of places to sit made it very comfortable. I had a small turkey sub, with all the veggies and it was amazing! They serve a variety of well priced and portioned sandwiches. The sub rolls are pretty decent, not at all like the hot dog'esk rolls they serve at amatos. The turkey is roasted and sliced in house. My turkey sub was made with provolone (on request) with tomat and mayo. I think it could have used some salt and pepper, but was good and left me feeling healthy. They also serve a variety of hot items, wraps and other sandwiches. Give this place a visit! read more

It breaks my heart to give Punky's a bad review. Punky's USED to be awesome, with a great variety of inexpensive hot and cold sandwiches, fantastic house made entrees (the mexican casserole rocks my world!), a great neighborhood feel... I was in there at least a couple of times a week. Its gone very far downhill very quickly. The entree fridges are always empty when they used to be stuffed full. They never have materials to make sandwiches. They're closed for no apparent reason on days they're normally open. I went in tonight and they were not only out of entrees, they were out of everything I tried to order. I finally had to ask the cashier what they DID have- just the frozen/fried stuff. I walked out empty handed and hungry. Hope springs eternal, so I'm sure I'll be back, and I'm sure I'll be disappointed agian... Punky's, please come back. Portland misses you :( Update- went there 12/23/14, bought a turkey sandwich for me and one for my mom. We both got super sick, spent Christmas eve trading places in the bathroom with horrible stomach cramps. Sorry Punkys, but I won't be back. I haven't written a review since 2009, but I had Punky's falafel sandwich today and felt compelled. They typically serve their falafel with eggplant, lettuce, tomato and tahini. I changed it to: falafel, more falafel (no eggplant), lettuce, tahini, hummus and feta. Phenomenal. 5 star sandwich, 4 star place (I had a so-so chicken salad sandwich there previously). read more
