You hopefully like the people you are with lol.. I ordered the house .... I originally wanted the melt but it came on TX toast and not rye so I went in another direction. (Nothing against the Texas, I just was craving rye) The bun is so soft, the burger even though cooked through was juicy, the flavors went well together. Out to pick up tickets for an event on a Thursday and decided to stay to eat. A burger sounded good. We saw a place around the corner so off we went. Located in the Old Port they offer outdoor seating to expand seating. This restaurant is SMALL! Be aware that they only have stool seating, no low tables or chairs. We walked in and started looking for the rest of the restaurant and what you see, is it. Thankful for the seats at the bar. Menu is unique with various spins on the staple burger. We decided to share the Bacon bacon burger with some fries. Beers on tap, various signage with cows, chickens, and a pig to symbolize the variety offered. Bartender/server was social with all and happy to answer any questions. Gentleman I sat next to is a construction worker who's here for an extended stay while building says he's here twice a week the burgers are so good. We shall see. Burger and fries a short time after ordering. Burger was very good, bacon bacon bacon YUM!! Fries were crispy outside and tender inside. Billing is a first, NOTHING comes with your $20 burger, nothing! Fries are an additional charge. Unusual and costly. $30 total for a burger and fries is steep. Just a half block off Commercial Street, this tiny, casual eatery-- with stool and counter seating inside and actual tables outside-- specializes in smashburgers but offers veggie burgers, lobster rolls, wings, and fish sandwiches as well. They also have a modest selection of well-chosen beers on tap and in cans. -- Bacon Bacon burger: I tried this on two separate visits, once adding caramelized onion to its standard configuration of house patty (a 50-50 blend of beef and pork), block sauce (think spicy ranch), bacon strips, bacon jam, and cheddar. The toppings all worked out great, with the bacon strips the standout by far: plentiful, tinted red from the cure (flavor galore), and both crispy and bendy in the same bite. On the downside, there's a dense bun to get through, diluting the deliciousness and moisture. The pork component in that patty suggests extra juiciness, but on one of the visits it was pretty dry--and smashburgers need not be dry. So I loved one and merely liked the other. I know it's 2026, but $20 for a burger without fries is a little pricey. If you get the love version instead of the like, it's worth it. -- Fries: Old school crinkle cuts cooked hot and crisp, available with sea salt or salt and vinegar. The menu has the smallest at $7, but with the burger it was only $3, a bargain that mitigated the $20 burger price tag. And they were very good. Service was great once, abysmal once (long wait for the check, long wait to pick up my credit card). On a third try in between, I sat on a stool for about 15 minutes trying to get noticed and wound up leaving. Lots of chitchat among the servers, both out front and back in the kitchen. Service doesn't seem to be something management prioritizes. So there's some good, some great, and some not-so-great. Could be a 3 or a 4, but I'm optimistically rounding up based on the excellent first experience and generally good food quality. read more

It's a testament to how great their burgers are that I'm willing to cram myself into the crowded little shoebox they have amongst the chaos of wharf street to eat them. I can never have enough of their "block sauce", which is something like a ketchup mayo secret sauce that many places have (but something stands out particularly about theirs). Love vinegar on my french fries at Old Orchard Beach but hate house soggy it makes the french fries. They do some kind of magic that keeps the fries crispy. Love this place! I have had to wait for a few minutes as the place was packed at almost 6pm. We were seated pretty quickly though. Our party of four each ordered a different item from the menu. My pick was their House Burger which had bacon, caramelized onions and jalapeños. Hubby chose the Texas burger which he had tried previously. My stepson selected the Bacon Bacon and his girlfriend ordered the chicken and waffle sandwich. We all shared as 1 lb. side of French fries. Everyone enjoyed the food here. Finally made it to Butcher Burger. A tiny little place with bar seats plus 4 seats against the opposite wall. Place smells like burgers cooking!! If it wasn't so windy we could have sat outside. The French fries were perfect, nice & crunchy on the outside & soft on the inside.Infact they are heads above Duckfats French fries. The hamburgers are quite substantial. Great burger bar. Flavor was just right. The fries were almost as tasty as Duck Fat. I loved the house sauce they give you. Ask for extra if you like a little heat. The Bacon burger is an easy go to. But we also had the fish sandwich that was a little over fried. But the taste was spot on. Again ask for extra tartar sauce or house sauce if you like a little spice. Salt & vinegar fries were much better, crunchy and flavorful (8/10) but very greasy. House Burger: Decent, but the patty was a little dry and the flavors felt heavy. After eating so much lobster, I couldn't take it anymore. My husband still wanted another lobster roll. We decided on this place, it was the best of both worlds. The place is pretty small but we sat on the patio and it was great. I got the basic cheeseburger, we shared a Cesar salad and he got the crab and lobster roll. It was all phenomenal.. my burger was probably one of the best burgers I've had. My husband said the lobster crab roll was one of the best in Portland. Using yelp, I wanted to find the best burger place in portland and butcher burger did not disappoint! The inside didn't really have too much in the way of seating but the outside seating was a lot more accommodating. Our waitress was very friendly, attentive, and funny too! We got the onion rings to start and not only were they so crispy but for one order we got so many that our party of 7 couldn't finish! The block sauce was sooo good too. For the burgers I got the bacon bacon which was really good because the sweetness of the bacon jam and the tanginess of the block sauce really create a truly awesome flavor experience. The others got the texas and the big mini mcmac, and while they both said they were good, making the mini mcmac big was definitely too much burger to handle so only get it if you're really hungry! Something to also keep in mind is that everything is a la carte, so fries were not included with the burger. And I think that's a good thing because the burger and onion rings together make a perfect 5 stars. However, the fries that we did end up getting for the table (not pictured) were too greasy and did not have enough salt on them, and for an additional 8 dollars that was really unfortunate. The crinkle cut shape was fun though! Overall, they do know burgers very well, and the onion rings and block sauce are amazing! Definitely worth coming back to! read more

I hold burger places to the highest of standards. Butcher Burger is quite *good*, but not quite *great*. The space itself leaves a little more to be desired. It's small and a bit cramped. This is the sort of space I would expect 'greasy spoon' sort of prices, but not gourmet prices. I poorly chose a seat, seemingly right under a vent, which was putting out cold air, even though it was also cold outside. The burger patty itself was nice. It's a bacon/beef mix and you can taste that, but because of this, they have to cook it to specific standards and it did look kind of anemic. I like it on the rare side when places allow. The bun was fridge-cold, which I wasn't a fan of. It's loaded with jarred pickles (maybe house-made, but the sort that's been soaking in brine) and diced iceberg. White onion. Tomate. It's okay. I won't go out of my way to come here nor would I recommend it to anyone, but I wasn't angry when I left. Staff was friendly, but too expensive for the overall experience. read more

Felt the need for a quick bite to eat and quite pleased I chose to stop here! I had the Buffalo Chicken Sandwich and it was excellent. But the real highlight were the Fries! Butcher Burger is pretty amazing! First, the burgers are real, and I'm pretty sure they grind their mix in house daily. It struck me that the beef was a mix of flavorful fatty cuts like chuck roast paired with higher flavor often tough cuts. Their burgers taste more like a good steak than a fatty burger; a definite plus for me. My cheeseburger came with a flavorful mix of fresh staples raw onion, tomato, and some sort of artisanal pickle. Excellent mix. The burger also came with their spicy creamy ketchup "Block Sauce". This added well to the flavor punch of the burger as well as cutting the beefiness with a bit of heat. The burger is not the best I've had, but it's damn close. On to the fries.... They are INCREDIBLE. These are the best fries I've had in my 51 years on Earth. Just the right crispy, crinkled crust surrounding soft potato goodness. These are definitely Belgian style and the equal of my very favorite fries in Belgium. Only one place in my travels has tied this place. They really bring home the five star review!!! Dipped in the same Block Sauce, they are incredible. My wife and I shared our meals. She order the Capresse Salad with lobster and again, it was fresh, and FULL of amazing flavors. The balsamic was a very nice high end Italian aged vinegar. A delicious counter to the burger and fries and surprisingly did not overpower the lobster, but enhanced it. For a burger specific spot in downtown Portland I think this is a great spot. The inside is extremely small, in late Decemeber we were lucky to snag two bar seats before groups came in with a wait for spots to open up. So due to their small size, even during non-tourist season anticipate a possible wait. I believe as long as not crazy extreme the wait will be worth it. Did they have my favorite burger I have eaten in downtown Portland, no, but they definitely have a good amount of toppings/variations of burgers and sandwiches everyone should be happy with something. Although we did not partake they offered cocktails, beer, and any of your preferred alcohol options. Honestly, I believe this spot is perfectly located and serves its purpose perfectly. When you think of Wharf St and all of the young people partying during the late hours of the night and needing a bite to eat! What is truly better than a greasy burger or sandwich??? I enjoyed my Texas burger and my wife loved her Chicken & Waffle sandwich. I would return here and look forward to trying more of their menu. Worth checking out! read more

Dirty, slow, and expensive.. The fries literally taste like the grease they use. Hamburger tasted like the hamburger you try to use at home when you think you can get away with using it before it's "bad". Chicken wings were decent. Block sauce is awesome!
