If you're in Portland and haven't been to Terlingua yet, you're missing out. I've been several times and I make a point to bring every out of town guest there because it's not just a meal, it's an experience. This weekend I took my best friend and it was perfect, even in the middle of winter. The deck is still open with plenty of space heaters and even heated seat cushions. We actually got so warm we had to peel off layers, which feels like a small miracle in Maine. The two of us love a marg & taco outing, and make a point to scope out the best of the best. We started with chips and salsa and some queso, which were the perfect kickoff. Then we ordered the street corn succotash, my absolute favorite. It's packed with flavor and topped with the most delicious, salty cotija cheese that pulls everything together. I crave that dish. We split the smoked brisket tacos and the smoked pork carnitas tacos, and both were outstanding. The meat was smoky and tender, the flavors were bold without being overdone, and every bite delivered. And the margaritas? Excellent and refreshing. Exactly what you want alongside that food. On top of all that, the staff is consistently wonderful. Every single time we've gone, our waitstaff has been charming, attentive, and genuinely helpful with recommendations. They strike that perfect balance of checking in without hovering, and they make you feel welcome from start to finish. Terlingua never disappoints. First night and meal in Portland Maine and we started off at Terlingua. We had a large group so we ended up doing the family style dinner which was $55 a person but let me tell you, you get some much food. We started of with what they called snacks... That being Chip, Guacamole, and Salsa. I will say I was a bag fan of the Guacamole. I was very was seasoned and very fresh. So for the mains them Family Style comes with Smoked Prime Brisket, Pork Shoulder (Pulled Pork), and the Rotating Daily BBQ which for us I believe were Burnt Ends which are one of my favorites. For the side we had Mac & Cheese Cornbread w/ Honey Butter, House BBQ Sauce & Spicy Vinegar with Pickles and Salad. To start with the sides that Mac & Cheese was really good but the winner was for the the Cornbread with the Honey Buter. The 2 just paired together so well. For the mains my favorites were the Smoked Prime Brisket and the Burnt Ends. The Brisket was good., probably not in my top 3 all time but for sure a must try. The Burnt Ends were also very good. You can't always get Burnt Ends but when you can it's for sure a must. We really enjoyed Terlingua and can't thank the staff enough for working with us for this event. I really wanted to like it. I had convinced my family to drive an hour here for my birthday and man, what a disappointment. There is zero atmosphere in the joint, wait staff weren't rude but seemed run off their feet, and the food was all served lukewarm at best. The tortilla soup was awful and served cold. My son - who demolishes food at every bbq place we go to - decided halfway through that he'd had enough and after trying his food I could tell why. Bland. Like I said, I really wanted to like the place but can't say I'd ever suggest anyone goes here. A flavor-free experience. Enjoyed being on the patio they provide heaters and plastic to help make it more enjoyable when the weather is cooler. A variety of seating options. Nice decor. Friendly staff. We ordered just appetizers. The street corn could have used some chips. I told the server it was delicious but I think they can afford to add a small handful of chips for dipping. The seasoning of the dishes was great. I have no doubt the flavors of other items would be nice, I think we might be used to $18 entrees coming with something else, We saw the tacos and realized that the price only included the taco. After reading multiple reviews, I had very high expectations for this establishment. When we arrived, there was a 30 minute wait. I highly recommend making a reservation. We were seated on the patio and ordered our drinks. I had a spicy margarita and my husband had the Old Fashion. The margarita was in a short glass and tasted like it was made with well tequila. Very disappointing given the $14 price tag. For an appetizer, we had the blue fin ceviche. It was very good. Finally, our waitress recommended the tacos. We ordered the brisket and fish taco. The brisket taco left alot to be desired. Very little flavor. The fish taco was covered in a cream sauce that overpowered the taco. Overall, we were very disappointed with the food. Tried lunch on a snowy Saturday. Got seated right away and our waiter approached quickly. He definitely was looking for us to order drinks and when we didn't his interest quickly waned. We need a minute with the menu and decided to try a special ( chicken empanada), a brisket and chili cheeseburger and queso with tortilla chips. The burger was delicious, juicy and loaded with flavor. I liked the high top and appreciated not having people on top of us. It was also not loud, easy to have a conversation. Everything was quite good but the server was pretty uninterested and seemed to be in a rush. He never came to the table after our food came out. We ordered a mix of grilled meats--brisket, pulled pork, and more--and everything was incredibly tender and juicy. You barely needed a knife. I've had this place bookmarked for a while and my brother recently read about it, we're here for the month so we decided to finally try it out. Holy macaroni, it was DELICIOUS!! We all loved our meals. We got the queso to start with. We couldn't stop eating it. My Dad and I got the Smoked Pork Carnitas Tacos and my brother a platter with brisket, pork, sausage, salad, pickled onions, pickles and corn bread. Since it was our first time there we ordered three sides, the mac & cheese, street corn succotash & papas bravas. We couldn't stop how delicious it all was while we were eating. I also got a side of guac, which was delish and margaritas, which were tasty. We didn't have reservations so we were sat at a high top on the right side of the restaurant. These are the best tacos. We took them to go so didn't get a chance to experience the ambiance or service really. It did take a long time for our tacos - once ordered it took about 40 minutes. We're from Atlanta and have had plenty of barbecue over the years, but this was by far some of the best we've ever had! We loved the variety of sauces, each one was unique and delicious. The barbecue special included pork shoulder, beef brisket, jerk chicken, and pork ribs, and everything was packed with flavor. The cornbread deserves its own shoutout. It was honestly some of the best I've ever had in my life. Perfectly sweetened, crispy on the edges, and unlike anything I've tasted before. I'll be dreaming about it forever. The in-house pickled vegetables were also a fantastic touch alongside the meats. We paired our meal with margaritas and they were excellent. The house skinny margarita was refreshing, and the spicy version was perfectly balanced with just the right amount of heat. Service was great too. The team was friendly and even gave us recommendations for other restaurants to try in the area. They also have a large outdoor seating area with artwork and an entirely separate section of the restaurant. It felt very spacious and seemed able to accommodate all types of parties, from couples to large groups. If I had to nitpick, I'd say the kids' menu could use a little more variety, and the chips and queso weren't our favorite. The chips were a bit stale and the queso was a little underwhelming. When you think of Portland, ME, you don't usually think of excellent BBQ or Mexican food. But also only in Portland can you find unique and quality Tex-Mex food along with great hospitality! We went during the cold season so didn't get a chance to check out their patio, though I do believe parts of it were still open and covered. I would definitely recommend making a reservation if you can, it was quite busy when went. The chip basket got free refills, which was a huge hit with our little one. The chips themselves were thinly sliced, crisp, well-seasoned, and not greasy - aka perfect! I got the small dinner board, which was anything but small. It came with 1lb of that day's meats, which included 2 pork ribs, pulled pork, 2 wings, and a giant slice of brisket, along with corn bread, house-made pickles, and a side of potato salad. The potato salad wasn't too mayo-heavy and had a nice vinegar tang to it. The corn bread was moist and buttery. The brisket was my favorite thing on the board - so fall-apart tender. I have been wanting to try Terlingua for YEARS now and finally did it last night. It did not disappoint! First off, there are many spaces to choose from when you book a reservation. There was nothing left in the dining room so we chose an enclosed outdoor space. It was a warm night, so figured being outside with a plastic enclosure would not be that bad. We were correct. There were propane heaters throughout the space, but none of them were on where it was a warm evening. Maybe dead of winter wouldn't really work out there, but for milder temperatures, it was a great option to the dining room. Our waitress was friendly and helpful in drink and meal selections. My husband and I had the large meat board. This is definitely enough food for at least three people. The meats on the board are the choices for the evening which in our case were. Smoked prime brisket, pork belly burnt ends, garlic sausage, and pork shoulder. **know that they make a certain amount of meat for the evening and when that is out, it is out! We eat a lot of barbecue in my family. This had to be the best barbecue I've eaten without being in TX. The meal came with the house side, which was a yummy coleslaw. It is also was accompanied by four big hunks of honey butter cornbread, pickled vegetables, and pickles, and two wonderful sauces - the house made barbecue, and a great mustard sauce that went beautifully with the sausage and the Brisket. You can get additional sides, but we figured this was going to be enough food, and it was, with leftovers to spare. The drink I had was an apple cider-based cocktail. It was very refreshing and perfect for the fall season. I felt the price of the mail was reasonable for the quantity of food given. Especially in Portland where the prices go up and the meal sizes go down. Parking is street parking which can be a bit of a pain. All in all, we will definitely be back! read more

Best patio in Portland. Only it's more than just a patio. And, truly, IYKYK. Option #1: The "Deck" - this area offers covered outdoor seating (which is good for summer) AND overhead heaters (which is good for shoulder seasons). It's attached to their building. Tables are for 2 to 6 people. No dogs allowed. Reservations accepted. Option #2: The "Margarita Garden" - this area offers picnic tables and is set downward in essentially what's their backyard. Dogs allowed. Reservable from May 1st to October 31st, otherwise it's walk-ins only/weather dependent. Option #3: The "Corral" - this area is also located in their backyard, it's more exposed to sun in the summer but also offers overhead heaters/decorative propane heaters for shoulder season weather. Picnic tables and bar seats. No dogs allowed. Reservations accepted. Option #4: The "Sunset Patio" - the patio area is for drinks only, seating is in Adirondack chairs. Dogs allowed. No reservations. Which to sit in? Totally preferential. I have a favorite! And I've found my new go-to spot for chips and sips. My advice if you're also a lover of little treats?!: Get whatever the frozen daiquiri option is (because it's going to be amazingly delicious and amazingly strong), get an order of chips and guacamole (thin yet strong crispy, salty tortilla chips and a decent scoop of chunky guacamole), sit outside (you can even make a reservation in advance), know you're in Portland but feel like you're on vacation somewhere else because the vibe here is just THAT immersive and unique. It's both quiet and "remote" somehow despite being right on Washington Ave. Vegan? Gluten-free? Don't be scared, their menu is clearly labeled! Terlingua is a bustling space with a wait even when you have a reservation. My margarita was legit. Honestly the worst queso I've ever had...congealed before it hit the table. Please do the salsa or guac instead. We also shared the small board which was plenty of food. The only decent item on it was the bean salad. My friend took me to Terlingua for some BBQ while I was visiting up in Portland... man do I wish this place had more locations. The food, ambiance, and service here were awesome! We sat in a very cool atmosphere outdoor, I loved the picnic tables and orange theme. We got the chips and queso and a BBQ tray to split. It was a perfect portion, and super yummy. The queso was decent Tex-Mex quality, and the chips were tasty. The BBQ tray was definitely the star of the show - the meat was cooked to perfection. It came with brisket, pork shoulder, and sausage link. Additionally it came with some Tex Mex salad and fresh cornbread. My favorite was definitely the sausage - it was so juicy and flavor, you can't beat it. The brisket and pork were also very good. I liked how there was a variety of different meats on the tray to sample. The service was also great, the waiters were all super attentive and even took the time to move us to a spot with more coverage as it started raining outside. This was a very unique setup. There are 3 outdoor seating areas that we could see along with their own bar. The service was amazing and all the employees were so friendly. We started with the chips, guac and salsa. All very fresh!! I had the Tacos Dorados which were amazing. Great price $18 and very filling. The Margarita was one of the best. My daughter and SIL had the brisket and said it was a 9.5 and carnitas a 9.4. Pretty good for picky eaters. Definitely have this on my places to return to and explore more of the menu. Got two chicken lime tacos for a quick lunch. All I can say is I wouldn't grab them again. The tortillas were soaked in oil. I think it was cheese that was burned to the tortillas as well. I get tacos can be messy, but these were an absolute mess. I opened the container and there was salsa, and chicken and over the to go container. No utensils, no napkins. I get food can be messy, but this was gross. Flavor was oil and salsa with a heaping soak of sour cream. Again I get food can be messy, not complaining as much about that as I am flavor, seasoning, and excessive oil and burned cheese. Just gross. I don't know as though I will get them again. I've been here so many times over the years. Business dinners, dinner with friends, or just for drinks. I come for the atmosphere inside and out, the service, and the cocktails. I think the food is very good, but not wow good, but who cares when you having fun and leave happy you came? Note that there is a 3% charge added to your bill for a "fair wage" charge. Some people have a strong reaction to that being included when it's not disclosed up front by the server and shows up on their bill. It is on the menu tho, but it certainly doesn't jump out at you. read more

Came here for their "Hell Night" and totally forgot to post! This was their first (hopefully not last) "Hell Night" event and it was spectacular. Each course spicer than the previous, even the dessert and drinks were spicy. I'm a huge fan of this restaurant as it is, their deviled eggs are a part of my life. This was by far one of my favorite food experience I've had in Portland. The bartender explained that the peppers were all grown by the restaurant by employees and how excited everyone was to do this. They started with a deviled egg with a perfectly fried oyster on top of it and a little hidden spicy pepper inside. A lobster stuffed Fresno popper and these smoked scotch bonnet, chicken wings. Next was a brisket meatball covered in their barbecue sauce and some crispy onions. The texture of the meatball was perfect and the spice was definitely present but not overbearing. The duck was insane and I could've eaten 10 orders of it and I'm praying it comes back as a special over the summer I'm not a fan of cooked apples, like refuse to eat them, but this was so good I couldn't look up from my dish. read more

Went here this past weekend for a lunch. I have been here before but this time I had the pleasure to sit in their outdoor area which was very spacious and a great spot for a lunch. Server was very welcoming and Friendly too. This is a great place to have some good food and a beer outside with the nice weather that we've been having. The chips and salsa were very nice and definitely some of the better salsa I've had in the area. My main was the lunch platter and priced at $27 it's a great deal. It came with grilled cornbread which honey butter which was sweet and very delicious. The pickled veggies and the salad were all very good additions too. It came with smoked sausage, brisket, and pork shoulder. All the meats were excellent and cooked to perfection. Very juicy and very flavorful. The bbq sauces on the side added to this as well and I enjoyed them a lot. Overall, this place is very nice and an interesting combination of bbq and Mexican. Mexican-BBQ-fusion restaurant with table service. The small bbq plate ($36) is listed as having 1# of meat but probably had 2X that amount and was quite filling. The brisket was juicy and had a thin bark - I wish it had a smokier taste; the pickled accompaniments were quite good and the bbq sauce was on the sweeter, not spicy side. The sausage and pork ribs were my favorites on the board. Sometimes pork ribs are a gamble and taste like straight up hot dogs to me - but not here, they had a great flavor. This was an interesting combo barbecue and Latin restaurant with a lovely deck and view. It's worth coming here for the atmosphere alone! We've heard good things about the ribs so of course we ordered those. They were so good we ordered a second batch. They were sticky and sweet with a perfect amount of Smokey flavor. To me this was the best thing I had at the restaurant. We also ordered ceviche because when in Portland you have to have seafood. It was also good...very refreshing. I ordered the brisket tacos and my husband got the Baja fish tacos. I tried the fish tacos and they were great. I thought the brisket was good but not amazing like the ribs.
