After a few days of eating ourselves silly on seafood, my fiance & I were dying to find something different. We didn't expect to find good Puerto Rican food in Portland, but I'm so glad we found this local gem! Reservations are recommended; they were still packed during the off season. We were lucky enough to snag two seats at the bar during dinner time without a wait. The bartender is super friendly and gave us some excellent food recommendations. We ordered the beef empanadas, pernil, and pollo guisado. Everything was DELICIOUS. The beef empanada filling is hard to beat - this might be one of the best ones I've had yet. We both really enjoyed the pernil & pollo guisado, but the soup was probably my favorite. I'm a soup gal, and this was just a hearty and excellent bowl of soup. Pernil portions were very generous. As a latina visiting Portland, I searched for Spanish food in the area and this place came up! I was pleasantly surprised and did not expect to eat at a Puerto Rican restaurant. I Gotta say it smelled soo good. Just like my mommas kitchen. The atmosphere was incredible, it was upscale yet cozy. The food was really good too.. The empanadas were very tasty and in also ordered tacos and corn fritters that were delicious as well. Only thing i didnt like is that their rice had an insane amount of olives for the serving size. I counted 18 olives in a small serving. I mean I dont mind olives but not that much. I ordered rice with guandules and I feel I got rice with olives. It's been a hot minute since I've partaken in the downtown culinary scene, but Papi might have the best cocktail menu in Portland. It's short, but every single one hit the mark. Ayyyyy Papi! Not gonna lie -- when I first heard a Puerto Rican bar was opening in Portland and that it was named Papi, I rolled my eyes so hard. I assumed it was going to be another one of those "Latin-inspired" spots that leans heavy on the branding without any of the actual culture or heart. So I ignored it. For months. Wouldn't even consider stepping inside. Yeah... I was wrong. I don't even remember what made me finally go, but I do know I've been back close to a dozen times since. Friends nights, date nights, rainy days, hot summer afternoons, and every single visit has been incredible. The first time I walked into Papi, I literally sighed out loud. As a Cuban living in Maine, I don't often walk into places that feel like home -- that remind me of my childhood, my family, my roots. But Papi did. From the prints on the wall to the smells coming from the kitchen to the drinks on the menu -- guava, guanábana, mango, Malta, Goya cans stacked like back home -- it felt like someone got it. It was honestly a liiiiittle emotional. And I have to shout out Lyanna, the head mixologist. Watching her command the bar while having real conversations with guests is just insane -- she'll be deep in making ten cocktails at once and still make you feel like you're the only person there. She's gotten so much well-deserved recognition recently, and still manages to stay humble and always present. It's always like catching up with a friend. Not, onto the drinks. Papi is doing things that no one else in Portland is doing -- both in flavor and presentation. These are cocktails you remember. And at $14-$16 each, they're priced the same as other bars around here, while (in my opinion) being a top player when it comes to creativity and ingredients. My all-time favorite is the Boriken Gold; guava, gold rum, lime, queso and coconut foam. I don't even have the words. It's magic in a glass (and comes with this edible glitter that makes for quite a pretty drink!). We mostly go for the cocktails, but we've had their food too. The tostones are my personal favorite. What a vibe here! As soon as we entered, it was like we went through a portal and traveled to Puerto Rico. The hostess and waitress were filled with positive energy. They were inviting, made you feel like you were family they were happy to see, and offered helpful suggestions while you navigated the menu. We settled on the tostones al ajillo (fried plantains), street tacos, beef empanadas, and rum cake for dessert. The beef empanada filling was different than any others I've had. I'd dare to describe them closer to the consistency of a sloppy joe. They were good, but saucier than expected. The fried plantains were HUGE and the garlic was prominent (yay!). I could eat just about anything dipped in that sauce. The street tacos were my favorite, hands down. The pork was AMAZING- so tender, juicy, and flavorful... a must get! Came to Papi for first time and mixed reviews. Cute, little space with limited table seating but a big bar to sit at. The drink menu was impressive with some interesting cocktails. I had the cafe colada which was delicious. As far as dinner, I was disappointed in my meal. I had the short rib over yucca mash and corn salsa. Very nice presentation with a 3" square of short rib, but once I started breaking it up to eat, found that about half of it was pure fat and gristle. I salvaged what little actual meat there was and ate the sides. Fortunately this was our second stop of the evening so I wasn't starving, but would have been but for that fact. When you are paying $30 for an entree, you expect to be able to eat more than half your protein. Flavors were very good, but not one of the more memorable short ribs I've had. A stellar dinner out at this Puerto Rican restaurant in Old Town. The vibe is electric - very cool bar and lighting, tin ceiling tiles, photos of prominent Puerto Ricans along the back wall, and fun regional music loud and proud. The food was superb. We loved the empanadas, the sorullo, the street tacos, the tostones, and the main plates. Papi can be a family/tapas kind of experience. The desert was a lot of fun - guava and cheese empanadas with powdered sugar, anyone? My cocktails were very good as well, really liked the Burden in My Hand and the Grito de Lares. Papi is where I go where I want to have a delicious meal/drink and have fun. It's always popping in here, and the vibes are up. The first time I came here, there was reggaeton blaring throughout the restaurant, definitely not somewhere I would bring my parents. The service is pretty casual, and one of my servers was really patient and kind recommending some drinks to my friend and myself. The bright rose hues and tropical decor make this place pop. I'll join the general enthusiasm for Papi's warm and welcoming vibe--you step off the street (on a chilly November evening, as was the case for me) and you're suddenly transported to something tropical and a bit old-school. Think classy but ever-just-so-slightly shabbily postwar, like you'll find in Buenos Aires. And they have empanadas! They come in a beef and lentil version (very cool that there's that vegetarian option). Otherwise the menu is a selection of smaller and larger plates. I went for the classic carne frita (a braised pork, vegetable, and rice dish), which was comforting and very filling--though unfortunately also a bit greasy and bland. I know that Puerto Rican food isn't spicy but even with the addition of their so-called hottest hot sauce option (it really wasn't hot at all), it just didn't pack much of a punch and settled in my stomach a bit weirdly. But I'll try something else next time, because what you're really here for are the cocktails--and this is where Papi's shines! I started with the Lost My Mojo Martini, which was a really intriguing combo of vodka and a dash of sherry, with cilantro, mint, and black pepper--a gorgeous green color, vegetal but amazingly balanced. Next up was the café colada, justifiably famous: vanilla vodka, rum, brandy, coconut ice cream, pineapple, and espresso, served over crushed ice. Adult dessert, yum! (Or second appetizer, as the case may be.) All of the drinks are carefully crafted and presented just gorgeously, by the wonderful staff behind the bar who will be happy to explain how flavors are infused and so on. It was a night/day experience in service and atmosphere - much more welcoming and the layout more inviting and bright. We had the tamarindo lindo and lost my mojo martini. ¡Aye, Papi! My husband saying 'We're going to ____ tonight, I made reservations' has only happened twice in our 15-year marriage, and boy am I glad one of those instances was for Papi. 6pm on a Friday in the Old Port can be chaos, but we found parking easily, and the brightly-painted door made it obvious as to where Papi was located. For anyone who has spent any time at all in Puerto Rico, this coral color will spark fond memories. We were greated and seated in under a minute. The host recommended the pollo guisado - I took it to heart. We ordered drinks (we drank them before me noting what they were, regretfully). My husband got a delightfully sweet drink with a candied kiwi on top of a large ice cube - it was perfect. Mine was a very smoky, herby something -or-other - I would only get this again if I wanted to sip on a single drink the entire night. It was a lot on the palate. Again, sorry I don't recall their names. The pollo guisado is absolute perfection, and brought me back to my time spent in Aguada. Huge chunks of veggies, the most tender chicken, and oh my gahhhhh the broth! This soup is serviced with a side of white rice and avocado. I loved scooping the rice and dipping into the broth - there's honestly nothing better. I'd like to say that you can't put a price on a perfect stew - but I cannot, because they did - and $28 was approximately double what feels right. That said, the flavors were immaculate. My husband got the Carne Frita, and I was lucky to snag a bite before it was gone. He kept mentioning how the pork fell apart, and boy did it! the rice and veggies were the most heavenly team to pair with the pork. My husband has asked me twice in the last week to attempt recreating it. Our server was accommodating and at first seem disinterested; however, toward the end of the meal very chatty which we enjoyed. This menu touched my heart, as I love Puerto Rico with my entire being. These flavors were precise and brought back such incredible memories of my favorite island. Portland needed this restaurant so badly. I think Papi brings something really unique to Portland. When you step through those Puerto Rican imported doors, you're entering into an entirely different world. And that immersive vibe - from the decor, to the music, to the general atmosphere - is very cool and unlike anything else in Portland! After having visited a handful of times now, Papi isn't for me though. I don't feel like I'm their demographic: somehow, I'm just not trendy enough or young enough to fit in or feel welcome here. Our service was prompt yes, but haughty. While I appreciate their clearly labeled menu with what's vegetarian/vegan/gluten-free, the rice and beans is a) so expensive ($22) for what it is (white rice and pinto beans with a few slices of tostones), and b) so, so dry and so, so flavorless. It feels almost intentional, so that you have to spend another $2 on their very small sauces. It's fun that the sauces change (goodbye guava toum!), but the most recent one I had wasn't good. They had two non-dairy options: one was described as "wetter and not spicy" and the other as "less wet and very spicy" (helpful, right?). I chose the second option and it tasted like pretty generic grocery store salsa (we even asked multiple times if it was the correct one). The cocktails are exceptional, that's to be expected with this particular owner, but I wouldn't go out of my way for them (I'd rather just go to Blyth and Burrows if I wanted something of this quality). ^ fun note worth repeating: look on the side of the menu, because it shows you what kind of glass your drink is going to come in! read more

Two pretty rude hostesses sat us at the bar, and once sat it took about 10 minutes for a bartender to come see us. I felt like a bother being there. That always makes me so uncomfortable. Two drinks was $36. Eek! At least our bartender chatted with us and knew the menu very well. My drink was good - though the ice cube took up 85% of the little glass. Ugh. I felt super out of place here in my leather jacket and boots - this is very much a touristy spot for people carrying Chanel bags that an $18 drink is pennies to. Having just returned from Puerto Rico a couple of weeks earlier, I was already craving alcapurrias, empanadas and Don Q rum. Papis delivered all of that and more. River, our server, was friendly, knew the menu inside and out, and expertly answered all of our questions. He explained that the plates are made for sharing, and share we did - apps, main courses and drinks. We tasted EVERYTHING we were served. We ended up ordering several "a mano" items - beef empanadas (2 for $12), crab alcapurria (fried yuca & banana croquette topped with Maine crab meat - 2 for $15), the street tacos - braised pork, tomatillo, pineapple, onion and cilantro - (3 very small but delicious tacos for $12) and also the sorullo side from the Y más section. These were 4 or 5 corn fritters filled with cheese to which we added the guava toun sauce at the suggestion of River. That probably would've been enough for for these 3 ladies, but we added 2 Platos - El Yunque (named after the PR National Park) - rice & beans, tostones, and a salad topped with avocado - and carne estofado - tender melt-in-your-mouth short ribs, served over a wonderfully creamy yucca mash topped with gravy and complimented by a corn relish. The flavors of every single dish were incredible! We oohed and ahhed ourselves through every bite! The drinks were fun, festive, unique and expertly crafted. Of the 5 we tried, my favs were the coquito - a seasonal Puerto Rican eggnog with a coconut base, and the Boriken Gold, which has a delicious foam topped with gold flecks. I was also tickled that when I asked for a Cuba Libre (rum and coke) the bartender came over to ask if I wanted it Puerto Rican style like her grandad drinks, or Portland style. I of course said PR style and so it came - a large ice cube, a tumbler full of Don Q Cristal rum with a splash of coke - perfecto! Just how I would make it at home. Multiple strike outs in a week, unfortunately! I wanted to try this place ever since it opened and walking in the interior is gorgeous. The doors that were all a commotion are also beautiful. We had about a 45 minute wait on a Friday evening and were eventually seated at the bar. The inside is so luxurious -- it feels so colonial and old school and yet Latin at the same time. They really did a good job with the vibe. Our bartender was essentially our waitress -- super attentive and patient with us. Like my favorite places, the menu is small so I was excited to see them shine in their food. Maybe it's because this is more of a cocktail/drink kind of place but... Sorullo - cheese balls. For $9 we got 5 tiny fried balls of cheese in a bowl. I don't know what I was thinking but it was so underwhelming and there wasn't really any special flavors to it. Serenata - salt cod with root veggies. For $19 we got a small dish of chopped cod with some kind of root... potato or yucca it was hard to tell, drowning in oil and with some vegetables. It wasn't bad but it was quite oily. Yucca Fries - these were completely not what I was expecting. It was more like ground yucca dipped and fried in a batter, not whole yucca, so the texture was just less my taste. The SO really liked these. Ba...fried shrimp something - these were fried shrimp in batter. Came with a really nice sweet jam like dip which I really enjoyed. Flan - guava flan. I love guava and I love flan. This was a highlight and might recommend it. It was not what I normally think of when I think of flan -- definitely much more custard like and less structure than standard flan. I really I had two things I loved -- the flan and the dip for the shrimp. I think part of it was that we ordered three fried dishes -- so adding on a very oily fish dish made everything kind of blegh. All of this plus two beers came out to $80. It was incredibly expensive for a sub par food experience. Maybe we just ordered the wrong thing -- I didn't feel like this was a place to eat Puerto Rican food -- it felt like a place to drink fancy cocktails and snack of some small dishes, so if you have that expectation it might live up to them. One of the more hyped recent openings certainly lives up to expectations. This restaurant group owns the three best looking bars in Portland, with Papi being the most casual and accessible. There's very few bars that make me want to visit the destination they represent, but my upcoming cruise ship stop (yeah, I'm that guy) to Old San Juan can't come fast enough. With a co-owner (Lyanna) and several staff with Puerto Rican heritage, it's no surprise that the extensive cocktail list is authentic and unique. Which leads to my intense fear of badly mispronouncing the menu (verbophobia is real!). Toscanelli's Trap (pineapple rum, mavi, fernet, angostura, cignar and vermouth, $14) was a booze forward sipper, with the pineapple lending the perfect sweetness. The creamed corn in the mezcal-based Corillo ($12) yielded a near milkshake, which took effort not to instantly finish. I need to return and try the entire menu, perhaps in one sitting. Papi isn't just a bar with food as an afterthought. It's a legit Puerto Rican menu with well known items (think Empanadas) mixed with many others I haven't heard of. I tried the Carne Estofado (short rib, yucca mash, corn relish, $29). I suppose the sharp knife was provided for decoration? Because the tender short rib barely even needed a fork and I could have eaten two. Our neighbors ordered the Chuletta (fried pork chop), which somehow looked even better. The worst thing I can say about Papi is that the orange bar lighting destroyed any hope of attractive pictures. As a Boricua, I came in excited and ready to support last night. I'll always root for Boricua spots, which is why I left a little disappointed that nothing here truly felt authentic. No local Puerto Rican beers, and the food didn't quite land--rice without habichuelas on the menu (which felt odd on its own), arroz con gandules that was hard and missing that unmistakable sofrito flavor. The sangria leaned overly sweet, heavy on the simple syrup. And it felt off to see "street tacos" on the menu as well as noting l empanadas on the menu instead of calling them pastelillos. That said, the service was wonderful and the ambiance is gorgeous. I'm leaving four stars because I genuinely want to see my fellow Boricuas shine. For a main I ordered the braised beef w/ mashed yucca & some garnishes - while really tasty, the portion was the size of what I'd expect an app to be - I left hungry! Being from South Florida, never thought of going to a Puerto Rican restaurant in Portland, ME. However, we were brought in by a local to try this place and we are so glad we did. The vibe and ambiance is hip. Reminded us of being in South Beach. The place is definitely has a friday or saturday night feel. We just came in for drinks and appetizers, however we were so turned on by the aroma of other customer's dishes so when in (rome) we had to indulge. Their old fashioned is one of the best i've had, together with a stamped "Papi" ice cube made it all feel special. Tostones were on point, but the mofongo is certainly top notch. I'd give this place 10 stars just on the atmosphere alone. It is gorgeous inside from the floor to the ceiling. Now for the food. Phenomenal! My friend and I shared Empanadas and the Ensalada De Calabaza. Both great to share. The Salad came with this amazing guava dressing. I wanted to bring that home! It was light but sweet- just perfect! Next we both got the Churrasco. The steak was super tender and cooked to perfection topped with a chiimchurri sauce. Wonderful! The staff was stellar too! They made me feel like family and the food was brought to us quickly. Seriously, try this place out. read more
