This bar has some of the best bar staff and hamburgers for late night fun. It's super lively with long lines of hungry folks lining up for freshly grilled smash burgers, lobster rolls and other yumminess. Nice draft beer selection with good prices and several great Amaro options for a sidecar. We had a really fun time hanging out here after dinner nearby. read more

Wanted to find a nice kind of hole in the wall beer bar and just happened to walk down this alley and stumbled upon Mash Tun. I should have just checked on Yelp since one of my Yelp friends gave this five stars! I have to concur because I stopped her with my co-worker and my husband for a couple of beers and have to say two things: 1) they have a great beer list that rotates frequently, 2) the bartenders are top notch. You know sometimes you go to a cool beer place and it seems like the bartenders want to do ANYTHING but actually give you a beer in exchange for cash? This place is the opposite and it's wonderful. Very helpful with the beer list, suggestions, tastes, etc. They are also quick to offer another beer where as some places it seems like pulling teeth to try to get a beverage. It was lively but not slammed when I was there but I can tell these guys would manage great even if the bar was two or three deep with customers. Yeah, I thing the Mash Tun is one of the best beer bars I've been to and in a place like Portland that is in the top echelon of beer cities, that is an achievement to respect. read more

What a great find! We were strolling the Old Port in Portland, ME on Tuesday evening and came across Mash Tun. A tiny spot on Wharf St. I know it's been several other bars, but I couldn't tell you what... and frankly whatever was there before doesn't matter because this current iteration of the space has to be the best. It's TINY. There are probably 12 - 15 bar stools. There might be a table or two around the corner, but I didn't check. The food is made on the back wall behind the bar. No secret kitchen here. You see everything being made. I had The Way Life Should Be on draft and my friend had a Kolch. He liked his, and I REALLY enjoyed mine. For our snack we had the deep fried green beans with bacon. It is very important that I explain that these green beans were not like the kind you get at TGI Fridays. These green beans were NOT battered before they were deep fried, they were just deep fries. When they came out of the fryer, they were tossed in garlic oil and had lemon juice squeezed on top, sprinkled with salt and sugar. They were absolutely incredible! Mash Tun was one of several restaurants and bars we visited while bar-hopping in downtown Portland, Maine. The bar's storefront faces Wharf Street, one of the city's iconic cobblestone streets. I liked this place OK. It has an old European pub feel. Dark, worn, cozy, loud. There are two rooms. We visited on a Saturday around 3pm. The main room with the main bar was busy. Our group of eight sat at one of the picnic tables in the secondary room. We drank various local/regional beers on tap. For example, Bissell Brothers, Stoneface, and Oxbow. They had over 30 beers on tap for about $7-8 a pour. We also got cocktails. We didn't get any food. Someone at the table next to us got an order of truffle fries and it smelled delicious. The bar has limited outdoor seating too. This is not a big place. I can see it getting very crowded at night. Foodwise, they serve burgers, tacos, lobster rolls, and raw oysters. Service was fine. Not to be dramatic, but this is one of my new favorite bars of all time. I found myself there twice on a four day trip, once for snacks / drinks at the bar with my boyfriend and once with my group of 12 as we awaited our dinner reservation...because I forced all of them to go. Because I loved it so much the first time. There's no cars (Mash Tun is located on a gorgeous cobblestone street that has live music), no ego, no overpriced drinks, and no bad food. This place introduced me to what should have been my drink of the summer on the last day of summer: a Tito's and San Pellegrino Limonata. This will be a regular drink in my home bar now and will always remind me of this awesome bar and the amazing time I had in Portland. What a gift! Go here for the food as well. I sampled the fish tacos, oysters, and truffle fries - all of which were top notch. They have outdoor seating, large tables for bigger groups, and really kind bartenders that make bellying up to the bar a total treat. You'll see locals and tourists alike at this spot, and I would make a plan to add it to your Portland itinerary if it isn't already. A Portland staple and a personal favorite! Mashtun is a lively bar with a large selection of draft beers and great food. They have outdoor seating, large picnic tables and TVs. Their parmesan truffle fries are a must have and never disappoint. The burgers are affordable and delicious. After 10pm their menu becomes limited and they'll serve until midnight on the weekends. Last night we were a little late so I wasn't able to order my go to, the shrimp tacos. If you have the chance to try this place out please do! Wow! This experience was so amazing. I LOVE MAINE. Sitting at the bar was so nice watching meals be prepped along with very quick service from anthony. Awesome location. It is so hard to find food past 9pm in central Portland and my husband and I made the mistake of passing up dinner in order to go explore. It was past 9pm and we could not find a spot to grab a quick bite. Cue Mash Tun, known for having a limited but tasty late night menu. I was expecting to be overcharged given that there is a demand for late night food and it's busy, also that it's in a super touristy part of town, however we were pleasantly surprised to find grass fed burgers at a very reasonable price. Had we known they we're going to be delicious we would have ordered another. Overall, hoping this place continues to offer a late night menu at its reasonable prices. I was leery of Mash Tun based off some of the other reviews but I was so curious because passing by it looked like a good time with the patrons outside, the menu sounded good and has kind of a dive - old school look to it. Some of my heeding was founded though. We came in for a quick drink while waiting for seating at another restaurant. It was a nice crowd both inside and out so we walked all the way in, to the end of the counter. One of the staff was standing there looking at the TV and a couple other workers were moving about doing their own thing. We waited a minute or two and another person waiting also, spoke to the guy just standing there asking about a seat. He turns to her and bluntly tells her, 'you have to talk to the bartender about that.' I thought, "sit anywhere you like" or "Or someone will help you soon." worked well enough. I suppose at Mash Tun it's a bit different. He went on to mention that he's just the cook. Fair enough being that the bar and the kitchen are all right there together, that's fine but to me a little effort when dealing with the customers goes a long way. I only had one drink here so I can't comment on too much more than witnessing that interaction and brief interactions with the actual bartender since he was quite busy. The ambience was about what I expected with the music and look. I like old look of it with lots of wood. My impressions of Mash Tun are that its the kinda place that you don't come looking have positive interactions. That's weird to me seeing as how Portland is so touristy but hey. I'd add this as a potential bar hop stop then move on. read more

We were walking around looking for a drink after dinner and a place to watch the Celtics/Bucks game and stumbled upon Mash Tun. It was pretty busy but found the end of a shared picnic table. We grabbed an IPA and a plum sour off the beer board behind us and we saw oysters on the menu so we grabbed a half dozen of those. Beers were solid and the oysters were pretty good. I don't have a lot of oyster knowledge but they weren't sandy and didn't taste off or anything. There's a lot of seats since there's two sides and a couple good sized TVs to catch a game so come through if you want a place to chill a while. This place was a nice pretty low key bar to stop by for drinks or for dinner. My boyfriend and I decided to stop here for drinks and to grab dinner on a Tuesday night. It is pretty much a seat yourself kind of place and then you place your orders up front at the bar. They have two different areas (the first area where it is pretty lively is where the main bar is and they mainly have counter seats there) then when you walk more in there is a back area where they have longer tables with seats and better for groups in my opinion. They have a decent amount of options for food (pretty good bar food options) and they have an extensive options for drinks. In terms of food - we decided to get the Lobster Roll which was not bad but definitely did not taste super fresh but still pretty tasted. The shrimp tacos were bomb - definitely recommend those. The garlic truffle fries also amazing - highly recommend those (great bar food option). For drinks - I got the sangria which was pretty good (not watered downed). My boyfriend got a beer which he also liked as well. Overall - great vibes with good food option at a good price point. Definitely recommend coming here! read more

Mash Tun is one of the more underrated spots downtown. While it's easy to find trendy small plate or pricey seafood restaurants in the Old Port, I'm so often at a loss when interested in just simple pub food. Dewey's is decent. Gritty's is bad. Tomaso's is solid, if you want to walk a 5k just to find it full. Mash Tun is most commonly the answer to "Where can we get a quick, cheap burger?" And the burgers are pretty great, along with the fries. But it's so much more than that. Most cocktails are $8, with the stronger ones (think Old Fashioned) being a whole $10. Evidently Mash Tun never replaced their 1998 calendar. The food menu is basic pub options, but most everything is better than you expect. The chicken sandwich especially receives raves. In addition to burgers, Mash Tun is well known for their craft beers. There are always 25+ on tap, though they're confusingly scribbled on a chalk board in the back of the bar area. And the bar area is where you want to sit. The back room seating borders on awkward, and has no atmosphere. Though it gets busy, it's bar or broke for me. While it's unlikely to make any lists on Bon Appetit, Mash Tun serves an important need in the downtown scene, and I'm already excited for my next burger. read more

1000% my vibe of a bar. It was giving The Bear vibes, but Maine A bit larger then most of the other spots on Wharf Street. There are a few shared picnic tables, high tops and counter space, which allowed for our friends to join us for drinks really easily after we ate! Simple menu with some fun additions. We got the tacos, Cajun fries, burger and Cesar salad with shrimp. Everything was good, but the Cajun fries were VERY seasoned and a bit too spicy for some of the group. Wish we got the green beans as those looked really good too! Lots of different beers and cocktails to try. Service was great - everyone was really chill. Note that you order at the bar and then they'll bring the food out to you, which took us awhile to realize. After eating, more friends joined which was super easy for them to do. The picnic table allowed for us all to sit and hang for a while. Going to the bar made it easy so we didn't have to worry about splitting checks. It was around 9:30pm and we were at another restaurant and had just been told that the kitchen was closed there, but a restaurant called Mash Tun had a late night kitchen and would still be serving food. Filled with disappointment that I wouldn't be having my lobster Mac n cheese, we walked down the street to Mash Tun. The mesquite chicken sandwich was seasoned perfectly; the pickled onions were so good mixing with the chicken and the spicy mayo. It was excellent and the fries were seasoned well too. Fun little dive bar in the heart of the downtown area. Great for a quick late night snack and cheap drink. They had a nice gastropub kinda menu that they cook up on a flat top behind the bar. I like that you can watch them cook your food. Our group was starving and all the restaurants close early in Portland so we all ordered something. The bartender seemed annoyed at us for some reason but put the orders in anyway. The bar really wasn't even that busy but he was the only on bartending so I guess he was stressed. There was a young kid bussing tables and running food that more than made up for the bartenders attitude though. He was very kind and helpful. We had the burger, chicken sandwich, lobster roll, Caesar salad, fries, and grilled cheese. Everything was great for late night bar food. The drinks were cheap but probably single pours. I first came to Mash Tun on a food walking tour of the area and sampled some beer and their lobster roll. I loved the lobster roll, it's a warm one, and they add lettuce, which I loved. We returned with friends another evening and tried their burgers and fries as well. I wouldn't rave about the burgers and I'd definitely go with the truffle fries over the cajun fries (something about them outside of the south.. it's just never right and alwayssss over seasoned). I can see myself coming back here with up to a dozen of my New England beer-enjoying friends, walking straight back to that large, decorated, picnic table in the back, and just plopping ourselves there for several hours. It has a cozy atmosphere, a fairly large selection of beers on draft, and from what I can tell, quite delicious food. Having a preference for porters and stouts, I was disappointed that they had non on tap tonight (they said they typically have one, but they ran out), but I was easily able to select from other beers to be satisfied. And while I didn't order any food myself, I was able to sample from some of what others ordered. Those truffle fries are ADDICTING, and had I wanted a meal here, I probably would have gone for the tacos I saw at the other end of the table.
