While the menu clearly labels what's vegetarian and what's gluten-free, it doesn't mention if anything's vegan. I want to take a moment to sincerely thank the five star staff who were incredibly patient, kind, and hospitable: they went above and beyond for us, checking with the kitchen (frequently) to see what was vegan-friendly. Currently that includes: Cold shareable: Sunomono (cucumber, wakame, tamari and rice vinegar) Cold shareable: Daikon Salad (radish and shiso leaf with umeboshi vinaigrette) Hot shareable: Roasted Edamame (garlic oil roasted with a citrus tamari dipping sauce) Hot shareable: Japanese-style Onion Rings (tempura onion rings, shichimi togarashi; omit the honey sriracha) Hot shareable: Blistered Shishito Peppers (charred shishitos with a citrus tamari dipping sauce) Sides: Seasoned Napa Cabbage, Pickled Vegetables, White Rice I tried most of the above and it just wasn't for me. The Sunomono was a bit too fishy, while the Onion Rings, Shisito Peppers, and Napa Cabbage were all strangely bland. It feels like everything's being served with a dipping sauce to cover up the lack of seasoning or flavor in the actual dish. The interior is inviting, with large windows that let natural sunlight flood the space; and, there are plenty of seating options to choose from (tables, bar, even couches!). While The Send is not for me, I think if you love Japanese food, love craft beer, and have absolutely no dietary restrictions, you're definitely going to appreciate this spot! read more

Hidden behind the million dollar bridge and a street is The Send Brewing. Great location, limited parking lot but easily found street parking. Interior is current, bar is a beaut and the decor is fun. We were seating quickly and without a reservation. We came on a Monday night as they are closed on Tuesday's and Wednesday's. They have a good variety of their own brews and I went for the stout. It was good, it had a piney finish, that I personally didn't care for but a light stout none the less. We ordered our food which was a mix of shareable, plenty of GF options and tasted great. My eyes were bigger than my stomach but the food is top shelf. They have a nice selection of Sake which came in what looked like a milk carton from elementary school but was smooth and delicious. I'd come back for sure, service, staff and food are great. Their stout is the only reason is don't give The Send Brewing that fifth star! Give them a try and let me know how you rate it. read more

Bartender, brewmaster for Maine Beer Co, chef, aerospace engineer for NASA: That's the owner of this latest brewery restaurant. Outrageous and spectacular. We went at less crowded lunchtime and throughly enjoyed the food and beer. A small, bright space matches the excellent bartender (Cole, same name as owner!). We sampled most of the cold & hot small plates, all delicious. Small patio in summer. Love this place! Update: We tried to go back on a Sunday, 4:30pm, and told we could only wait in line for an hour in a tiny entryway for the next table. I'm not altering my rating; however, not taking names/text # for a proper queue, allowing one to walk, nap in car, whatever, is not pleasant. read more

Okay, okay... I get the hype now! I was a huge Foulmouthed Brewery fan -- it was the first brewery I ever visited in Portland years ago. When I heard it was closing, I was devastated... until I found out another brewery was taking its place. Big shoes to fill, but The Send delivered. If you ever went to Foulmouthed, the space will feel familiar. Not much has changed inside (unless my memory is playing tricks on me!), but the food and drink menu is completely different. The Send leans Japanese-inspired, and they nail it. The Knightville IPA is one of the best I've had in a very long time. They also offer canned ciders, a solid sake selection, and wines. The food was just as impressive as their drinks program. There are so many options, from small bites to full entrees. We stuck to appetizers and ordered a few for the table. Everything was delicious, but the okonomiyaki (savory pancake) and curry korokke (like a croquette?) were standouts; hearty, flavorful, and worth every penny at $12 and $11 respectively. I need to go back for an entree, though! Oh, and their onion rings are the best I've had. For three of us, with plenty of apps and 2-3 drinks each, the total pre-tip was $90. Came here on a Saturday with a big party, and our entire group loved this place. They had plenty of seating both inside and outside, but we decided to sit inside. The drink menu was pretty decent, but it was the food menu that really caught our attention. Their dishes are based around Japanese cuisine, with a creative twist that made each plate stand out. We really enjoyed the Fish dip, Chicken Karaage, and cucumber salad. Only downside was the Miso Pork and Salmon Onigiri rice to meat proportion was a little off and had too much rice. Plus who doesn't love some Godzilla decor!! We went for a late lunch, Bryson the bartender was amazing. Made recommendations, some were ordered and others will be when we return. It is a brewery, I am not a beer drinker but my husband in he had The Ferry Village Stout it has notes of chocolate and coffee, he truly enjoyed it! Thy do have a small variety of hard ciders, seltzers and saki.They also have non alcoholic options and hot tea options. For my gluten free friends, you have options!! The food was so flavorful, shareable menu items were perfect for sharing we got the Japanese onion rings and OH MY GOD! I will order these every day! Perfect crunch not to much batter and onion cooked to perfection! Karaage to share, yes please! The chicken was precisely cooked so moist and the coating was again a perfect crunch! Looooved the Send. Think: a not-casual, not-upscale Japanese restaurant, complete with traditional Japanese food in a large, sun-lit space, known for its beer and Sake juice boxes (yum). All they're missing is a Karaoke night (sign me up). We ordered: the shishito peppers, Tamagoyaki, veggie onigiri, onion rings, miso soup, and a side of pickled veggies, cucumbers, and the sake juice boxes. Everything was great, but could've used a tad more seasoning. What I really wanted to try, but didn't, was the salmon onigiri and Okonomiyaki, and the matcha soft serve. If I drank beer, I would've opted for that, since it seems that's what they're known for. Definitely worth the trip! read more

The former Foulmouthed Brewery has been transformed. The area is welcoming this new business. There was a wait for tables on a recent Friday night. The new vibe is sophisticated yet cozy. Staff is friendly and professional. Though few, their brews are excellent. There are guest taps as well. They will offer additional choices in the near future. They also offer wine, sake and cider. Non alcoholic beverages are available too. We tried the fried onion rings, shishito peppers and the Japanese fried chicken. All were excellent. Can't wait to return and try some other interesting Asian fare. A great new addition to South Portland food scene. read more

We were excited to learn that a Japanese brewery was in South Portland! The location was easy to find and parking was accessible. We are big fans of their sauces and the roasted Edamame was amazing! The Onigiri rolls were disappointing with very little filling of salmon (fingernail amount). When biting into the roll, I was expecting a punch of flavorful salmon but was met with just rice. The salmon was also a bit dry but flavorful. Hope they make some changes with this. The Tonkatsu had a great crispy bite but can tell the chicken was overdone with a chewiness to the meat. My kids loved the Miso and good rice is hard to find. The rice was perfect!!!! The beer selections are minimal but enjoyed the Knightville IPA. I would give the beer a 6 out of ten, but I do like my IPA's with a hoppier bite. Not sure if this location is a "serve yourself" to the utensils and napkins but we needed to collect these items on our own throughout our experience. We will give this spot another try soon. read more
