Great flavors and a wide selection of options from this place. As Indonesian/Malaysian/Singaporean cuisine goes, this is a solid choice. The restaurant itself has pretty spacious seating and the staff is quite attentive. Their satay and roti were really solid appetizers. Their Singapore Laksa, Rendang, and Borneo Seafood noodles were ordered by our party and they loved it. The Rendang was a little too much on the spicy side. I had the Kalimantan with flat noodles and loved it. Absolutely worth a visit or two!

As a born and semi-bred Malaysian, Borneo Eatery is a solid pick for those looking to try or revisit borneo-cuisine. Came in early on a Friday and was greeted with friendly service. Ordering was quick and we were checked in on a handful of times. The staff were attentive and smiley. I got the Nasi Lemak as that was a personal favourite of mine growing up. It didn't exactly hit the spot but it definitely surprised me in a good way. The chopped up chicken allowed for a crispier exterior but also meant less juicy meat. Cabbage as a side was new to me, but was fresh and creamy. Solid sambal, though I'd personally like it a touch hotter. Overall a different take that works and makes it a wonderful, easy to eat rice dish. Chicken satay was great! Nutty sauce with a crispy garnish. It's missing the smoky flavour but the meat was cooked very well. A casual, family-friendly, hole-in-the-wall restaurant that lives up to it's name.

Ordered the Singaporean laksa (had tofu shrimp fish cake corn soy sauce egg bean . sprouts) to go. service was polite and quick. opted for the egg noodle. I had leftover broth ate it the next day with my own cooked noodles. Make sure you ask for some hot sauce if you enjoy spicy.

Plenty of well lit seating inside, Very attentive staff, I was greeted immediately entering the restaurant. I asked for takeout and was handed a menu. Right when I set down the menu someone came up to take my order. The flavor isn't strong, almost bland. The best way for me to explain it is if you took yesterday's leftovers and threw it all together. Hokkien mie- Taste like chicken broth with a instant ramen packet Topped with tea egg, yesterdays chassiu, and some butter chicken. Overall the service is good, response time good, cleanliness good.

The food was delicious! It was my first time going here, so we tried a little of everything. My favorite was definitely the chicken satay, it was so flavorful and came with 5 skewers, which I thought was pretty good for the price. My other favorite was the hokkien mie, the noodles were a nice texture and I really liked the chicken in them The borneo style fried rice and nasi campur plate were also yummy! Loved the char siu The roti was good, but I do not think the portion was good considering the price ($9.50 for 2) The service was ok, we did sit there for awhile before someone came over & we could ask for the check. Also, parking is kind of hard, you either can do street or there is a lot near the restaurant we parked at. Overall, it was yummy and I would go again!

A small little place and very casual. I probably would walk right by it normally but the food was excellent. The service was good. We loved the satay and the noodles stirred fry (only wished that we got the flat noodles liked we ordered).

It was my first time here and I was amazed by the food and friendly staff! Ordered: 1) Roti Prata: loved the texture of the roti and the curry-like sauce on the side 2) Singapore Laksa: felt so comforting! Never had Laksa before so I don't have anything to compare it to. But I loved how much ingredients they pack into a single bowl! All of this with noodles in a sweet and savory curry broth :) 3) Chicken satay Rice Combo: IMO, this was the highlight of the meal! The chicken was super juicy and the satay sauce was so delicious and you have to pair this with some coconut rice! Amazing combo! Would definitely come back just for this!

I hadn't been to Borneo since they expanded the restaurant. Today my Indonesian friend came down from the Bay Area, and we wanted Indonesian food, so we came here. We parked at a nearby city lot, and there was no wait on a Friday night. The expanded space feels much more spacious, and the colorful doors on the wall make the interior feel lively. Since it's Friday during Lent, we were looking for vegetarian options. The staff told us we could substitute tofu for any protein, which was great. We ordered roti, chicken satay, kwe tiau siram, Indo-style fried rice, and cendol. Everything was delicious, and we were happy with all the dishes. Solid spot for Indonesian, Malaysian, or Singaporean food in the Alhambra are

We walked in around 7:30PM on a Wednesday night. Not a lot of people. We got greeted immediately and then seated. Food came out quick after we ordered. It was very delicious. I also placed a togo order for the next morning. Togo order for 13 people and they were able to accommodate me! I paid the night before and they called the next morning, 30 mins before their opening time, to confirm that I am picking up the food. It was great experience! Just one tad opinion that laksa noodles for togo portion was small.....

Lemak (coconut rice, fried chicken, fried tofu, curry egg, spicy peanut anchovy)!

My very first time trying Indonesian/Singaporean/Malaysian cuisine, and I am a huge fan! This is definitely a hole-in-the-wall place, which confirmed to me that the dishes were authentic. The interior is so cute and colorful that it made the dining experience all the more fun and appetizing. We ordered a Large Roti Prata (2 grilled flour based pancake/bread) that is served with their Indonesian curry sauce. The soft/chewy Roti Prata dipped in the curry sauce was phenomenal! I absolutely loved everything about this appetizer. For the main, we ordered Lemak, which is a coconut grant rice plate served with friend chicken, fried tofu, curry egg, and spicy peanut anchovy. Interestingly, the star of this dish was the peanut anchovy and curry egg. We also ordered the famous Singapore Laksa that comes with a choice of egg noodles, vermicelli, or flat rice noodles. This noodle soup is a creamy coconut milk-based curry with shrimp, fish cake, fried tofu, marinated egg, sweet corn, and bean sprouts. I would definitely order this again! It seems like a lot of people get the Chicken Satay so I definitely want to come back to try that and get some of the other menus that I've tried previously again.

Let's start with parking. You'll want to park behind the building in the parking structure. During primetime it can get a little hectic, but our tip is to just head straight to the top floor if it's around 7 PM. That usually saves you time circling around. The restaurant itself is small but cozy. It's not one of those places with flashy décor or a "wow" factor, but it definitely gives off a more intimate Malaysian vibe, which we enjoyed. This was our second visit, and compared to the first time there were fewer people. We arrived around 7 PM and were seated immediately, which was great. Here's what we ordered: Gado Gado - $13 Rating: 7.9/10 A mix of lettuce, bean sprouts, cabbage, cucumber, egg, and tofu dressed in their homemade peanut sauce. It's a great option for vegetarians. The peanut sauce was rich, creamy, and flavorful. Definitely a tasty appetizer and worth trying. Roti Prata (Small) - $4.99 (Large with two pieces - $9.50) Rating: 6/10 To be honest, it felt a bit pricey for one small piece. I also remember it being thicker and fluffier the first time we had it. This time it was more thin and flaky. The curry dip was still nice, but it tasted a little watered down compared to our last visit. Nasi Rendang - $16 Rating: 7.8/10 This dish reminded me of the Indonesian banana leaf dish Nasi Bungkus. It comes with beef rendang, fried tofu, curry egg, and spicy peanut anchovy over steamed rice covered in curry sauce. I liked that the rice had sauce on top, the egg had great texture, and the beef was soft and flavorful. Singapore Laksa - $17 Rating: 7.5/10 You can choose between egg noodles, vermicelli, or flat rice noodles. We went with the egg noodles, which honestly tasted a lot like ramen noodles. The shrimp-based curry laksa broth was smooth and flavorful though, and the shrimp, fish cake, fried tofu, and marinated egg gave the dish nice variety and texture. Overall, the ambience was welcoming and the servers were friendly. There was one older server who I remember from our last visit as well -- she is honestly the sweetest, even though I forgot to get her name this time. If you're looking to explore different Asian flavors and try Malaysian-style dishes, this is definitely a spot worth checking out. Happy Eats!

Always passed by here and see there is usually a lot of people dining here. So I was curious to try it! We ordered the Laksa with egg noodle, Borneo Rice, Satay Plate with curry rice, and a small size Roti. The Laksa noodle came out first, which the portion was a lot smaller than expected. The flavor was pretty nice, but the broth was not as thick as I imagined. Then the Satay Plate came next, which I actually enjoyed the most! The chicken on the satay was soft and flavorful, very easy to eat off the skewer. The curry rice with it was quite interesting, which I liked how the curry flavor was kind of subtle to it. The fried onions were a nice touch. Then came the borneo rice, which looked really dark from soy sauce maybe? It was pretty decent, although kinda salty. My bf enjoyed it though cause that's his type of fried rice haha. We ended up getting a roti last, which they brought it to us fresh. This was so soft and hot, it tore apart quite perfectly. It's not too airy, but just quite soft and the right amount of chewiness to it. Overall, it was nice to finally try this place! Service was a bit slow, but they were all very friendly.

Came back here, and the food was delicious. It wasn't too crowded on Thursday around 6:30PM (only a few tables were occupied), so we were able to walk in and place our order fairly quickly. This time, I tried these items: Singapore Laksa - I actually loved this. Like curry noodles, good flavor, not too strong, totally enjoyable. (4.5/5) Hakka Mie - It was good. Simple and classic. Nothing too crazy, but tasty. (4/5) Cendol - A tasty dessert drink. Not too sweet, though the drink wasn't topped off. Still good. (4/5) Overall, Borneo always hits, and the prices are pretty reasonable. Always comforting. Parking - Super easy, as they have a multi-story lot out back.

Practically every table will have an order. Yeah, soft chicken - even the white meat, rice with a strong chicken flavor you didn't know existed, and excellent ginger sauce that surprisingly hasn't gone viral yet. Boneless chicken, by the way, so non-Canto friendly, and you saw that with the mosaic of people coming in to pick up an order. Me too, planning to pick up 2 orders before making my way Irvine, driving fast, faces pass, and I'm southbound. Jiving like Terry Crews. OK, maybe not "driving fast". This is LA, after all. But then the daily special menu caught my eye. It's Thursday. Chicken ala King, the chicken Al Fredo of Hong Kong, the one white sauce Western dish that HongKongers think of. It's fine. You have a job, and you're not here as often as you wish. Trigger pulled. And you're not the thermopile that you think you are anymore. Trigger pulled on the large chrysanthemum tea. And boy, do I NOT regret that decision. The flavors were on point, just like how it used to be in HK! The richness of the butter worked well with the flavor of the chicken. I don't feel as bad as enjoying the butter and cheeese combo that is Al Fredo but that's probably a bias I have. (The easiest place to get this in HK is actually KFC... But the execution is also pepper heavy there is no taste semblance to the original dish...) The tea is floral, sweet with a slight bitter aftertaste from being a little over brewed if your standard is Vita, but absolutely perfect for the heatwave. Service was great too. The boss lady smiled but was also very sharp. Got the tea immediately, no fuss about the ice, no hesitation and ready to switch when I asked if the adjacent container is milk tea. It's not. It's THEIR cappuchino. By the way, if you noticed the 3 veggie paintings on their wall, here's the irony... I'm pretty sure there's no leeks, carrots, or garlic used in making chicken rice. The yellow of the walls work well though, working in step with the sunset hues, and a far cry from the no-frills hospitial-wite walls of so many other Cantonese mom-n-pops. And sadly, no one comes close in the Bay Area, not even the 2 new shops in Millbrae dare I say. Parking isn't an issue. Valley Blvd is a busy street, but the side streets are residential. Try not to be on the other side of Valley though. Valley with its traffic is a pain in the rear to cross. Even if you're not a chicken. So I came away thinking the chicken rice here was simply okay - not bad, but not particularly memorable either. The chicken itself was decent, but mine came out slightly overcooked. As a result, it lost some of the tenderness and velvety texture that defines truly great Hainanese chicken. The dryness also muted some of the natural flavor that should come through in the poached chicken. The rice was probably the biggest disappointment for me. Great Hainanese chicken rice should have a rich aroma from chicken stock, garlic, ginger, and rendered fat, with each grain distinct and flavorful on its own. Here, the rice felt a bit clumpy and lacked the deep, savory fragrance and chicken essence that elevate the dish. As for the condiments, they were adequate but unremarkable. The soy sauce and ginger sauce did their job of complementing the chicken, but neither stood out. The chili sauce had some heat and acidity. Still, it lacked the brightness and complexity that can really tie the entire plate together. Overall, nothing about the meal was bad. In fact, I can see why it satisfies many people looking for comforting chicken rice. But for me, the chicken, rice, and sauces never fully came together into a cohesive, standout dish. It's competent Hainanese Chicken Rice - just missing the extra depth, balance, and refinement that make the best versions truly special.

Nasi Ayam Kremes is a combination of Indonesian style fried chicken, white rice, perkedel (fried potato pattie), fried tofu, fried tempeh, and sayur asem soup. The chicken is deep fried after it's been cooked in herbs and fully marinated. Very flavorful as I can really taste the different herbs and spices. Over the fried chicken is a generous serving of savory crunchy crumbs. There's also a side of medium spicy house sambal. I would recommend adding some kecap manis (Indonesian sweet soy sauce) and use this as dipping sauce. The half fried chicken is rather small, about the size of a Cornish hen. The soup is pretty good, even though I am not a fan of sayur asem soup. This tamarind-based soup contains green beans, chayote, corn rounds, and peanuts. The deep fried marinated tofu and tempeh are so yummy! They truly remind me of the good ol' days living in Indonesia, as they are the staple foods of the locals. The perkedel is just passable, possibly because it is served cold. Unfortunately, it isn't as crispy as it should be. The restaurant is small. Other than the kitchen crew, only one person was doing all the work. Good and very friendly service. My order did take a long time, however. If you're in a rush, you may want to eat somewhere else. Indo Bistro is the place where you really want to "santai" which means relax, take it easy. Indo Bistro is an Indonesian restaurant, mini-mart hybrid. They sell a variety of pre-packaged Indonesian snacks, shelf stable groceries, and also freshly-made market snacks, such as pastel, lemper, bakcang, rempeyek, etc. I also tried their savory snack Lemper, which is sticky rice stuffed with shredded chicken that's been cooked in coconut milk. After it is wrapped in fresh banana leaf, it is then char-grilled. Their lemper is really good, but very greasy. It's basically food and lip gloss in one. BOGO Lol Next time when I'm craving more Indonesian food, I'll be coming back to Indo Bistro. They have really good chicken satays.

Strawberry Pandan Lemonade - This was my girlfriend's drink. I had a small sip here but found it was refreshing and not too sweet. However, I didn't really get any pandan flavor, mainly strawberry. When it all comes together, it was a good experience. The interior of the story is more dimly lit and felt like a romantic night dinner, despite being the middle of the day. The dishes had a balance of standard and hidden gems. Everything was more than sufficient for two people to share. Service was great and very attentive. Will come back for the Crispy Short Ribs! American Express is accepted here.

A vibrant five foot lobster art installation greeted customers at the door. So cute I could almost…read moreeat it up. Its size should have alerted me to the offerings inside. Because once seated at the table, I spotted a staff member showing a live crab so big and rugged looking it could have been part of a prehistoric lineup. We whetted our appetite with a glass of Cabernet Sauvignon, and then the food started coming out. It was a veritable feast. One that put some of the wedding banquets I've attended to shame. Every dish was superb, but if I could only choose half, these would be my favorites: -Braised Morel and Chicken Soup -Salted Egg Fried Shrimp -Vietnamese Style Filet Mignon -Salted Fish, Chicken, and Tofu Hot Pot -Vietnamese Style Black Pepper Fried Fish with Basil -House Special Vietnamese style lobster with noodles The runners-up: -Szechuan Fried Free-Range Chicken (Bone-in) -some kind of pork chop -Lotus and Wood Ear Stir Fry -Choy Sum Stir Fry -Steamed Garlic Alaskan King Crab The Hong Kong egg waffle dessert didn't quite land for me, making it the lone outlier in an otherwise spectacular spread. It was my first time trying Morel mushroom soup and Salted egg fried shrimp, and I cannot get enough of them. I hope to visit again very soon!

We went with a large party to celebrate a birthday. Food was very uneven: the lobster and shrimp…read morewere good, but others were just OK (three cup chicken) or even quite poor (the water vegetable and mapo tofu). We had a mix of older Taiwanese who wanted dishes the restaurant is known for, and others who had different tastes.. Also, they forgot 2 dishes. We informed them after we were done eating--they were starting to clear the table after they brought dessert. We said they could just be cancelled because dinner was over. They went into the kitchen and when they came back they said they had already started cooking them. What coincidental timing! After 5-10 min they brought the two dishes anyway (!). Poor service and likely an outright lie. Why wait until after dessert to bring out two savory dishes? Based on anecdotes from friends it seems like service and food quality depends a lot on who they are serving.
