STEPH JUDGEMENT: A no-frills place with decent food and great prices. Came here because the hubby had been before and liked it. This is a place that does a lot of different stuff, amazingly, with just one guy. It wasn't too busy on the morning of our visit but it looked like it might get insane during lunch hour (there were specified doors for ins and outs). The space was small but not tiny, with a few tables and counter seating. Lots of knickknacks, signs, and posters on the walls--a bit cluttered but homey. I had a coffee with cream, which was pretty standard--not bad, not great. We shared an egg and cheese breakfast sandwich (homestyle, with regular ole sandwich bread and American cheese), and hash browns (the patty kind). I spent 5 days in Boston and of my 5 breakfasts in town, the breakfast meal plate at Bonne Chance Cafe was by far the best. It's a home-style breakfast with two large eggs, two large hashbrown patties, your choice of meat (I got bacon) and two slices of toast -- all for a very reasonable price of $11.99 that beats hotel breakfast prices by a mile. The eggs were cooked perfectly the way I asked -- sunny side up -- and the bacon was crispy yet still had a nice chew (not overdone). Paired with a black coffee, it was a strong way to start my day. We were staying close to TD Garden and wanted to find a nearby breakfast place. This place was great! I ordered ahead for convenience and everything was hot and ready when we got there. I had a bacon, egg, and cheese on an everything bagel with an added hash brown. I could tell this place takes pride in what they do and their food and restaurant shows it. I've made this place my go to for breakfast and lunch when I go into the office. I do an online order when my train pulls into north station and it's ready by the time I get there. Everything is always ready on time. The service is excellent. He has the cup prepared but doesn't pour the coffee until you get there so its fresh and hot. So thoughtful and not something you'll get at Starbucks. I love that they have simple sandwiches available in addition to hot food. I don't always want something super complex for lunch just because I didn't pack one with me, and this place has the best of both worlds. Pricing isn't bad either for the area. I chanced, pun intended, upon Bonne Chance Cafe during one of my many walks on Canal Street. I had my lavender lemonade in hand when out of the corner of my eyes I see a giant poster for bibimbap. Bibimbap is a Korean rice dish with mixed salted pickled vegetables topping. It usually come with a marinated protein, usually thinly sliced pork or beef in a sweet Korean marinade. Also sometimes topped off with a fried egg. Sounds like a lot? Well, it is. The poster caught me by surprise. I have walked this street countless times but never noticed the cafe. For a fast food cafe, Bonne does a very decent bibimbap for the price that you pay. It is nothing to rave about but it's definitely a quick option for lunch. It takes about 5 -7 minutes to prepare. The vegetables are pre-made and packaged. You're really waiting for the marinated meat topping, the fried egg, and the rice. It will not come in a hot stone pot as how most Korean restaurants does it. Instead, the rice comes in a small to go container. The vegetables you get include blanched bean sprouts, spinach, green squash, carrot, lettuce, and mushroom. You can pick spicy pork, beef, or chicken for protein. I have tried all three and all are decent with the beef being my favorite followed by pork and then chicken. Some days the marinated mushrooms can be slightly salty but other days perfectly fine. The portion is huge and I never finish. The cafe also serves breakfast items which I have not yet tried. There is also a salad bar which I see a lot of people choose during the lunch rush. You can also get dumplings from the salad bar area. You can get either meat or vegetable dumplings. I have tried the spicy vegetable dumplings and they have a nice kick to them. There is a good amount of seatings by the window if you want to eat in. Overall, great place if you work in the area and want to grab a quick lunch. read more

The spicy pork rice plate was such a generous portion for $13. The spicy pork was so soft and flavorful. It wasn't too spicy so you could actually taste the other flavors which was nice. The veggies were normal and the rice tasted normal too. If I didn't get food poisoning I would come back. I came here for breakfast - with so many chains in the vicinity, it was nice to get something not made in a mass production, which tasted better, for about the same price. As I was eating my breakfast, people near me raved about the salad bar available at lunch. And the other reviews I've seen make me want to come back here for lunch and dinner - so many other places in the area offer an overabundance of carbs, it's nice - nay, great - to have this as an option. A hole-in-the-wall for sure, but don't let appearances fool you! Even though the name of the place is French it's more of a Korean/American fusion with rice plate specials, paninis, subs, and a salad bar with many unique options (dumplings, pierogis, roasted vegetables, etc). They do have a small section of baked goods, but it's not really the focus of this place. The highlight for me is definitely the spicy pork & bulgogi. SO good when paired with rice or noodles. I know they're known for the bibimbop so I'll have to try that one of these days. read more

Update on my previous review: I have also tried the spicy pork. The sauce that the pork is marinated in is spectacular. The pork has a good spice, not overwhelming, and is very tender! I am not one for fat so I tend to remove it from the meat I am eating. There was not too too much fat on most pieces so that was good for me. :) read more

Solid food option. They give a good amount of food for a reasonable price. I would recommend the bulgogi plate ($9.61) as the beef is very moist and delicious. It came with a mound of rice and veggies on the side. The sauce that they put on it is a bit sweet so maybe next time I would not get it. There is a space for eating in, but nothing fancy. I really just don't understand the bad reviews. Sure, sometimes, they can take a while to make your breakfast, but it's always of good quality and it's awesome that they use real eggs on a skillet--not those awful microwaved eggs you get everywhere else. The people who run this place are always nice and friendly and pleasant. Also, I just went over for the salad bar and I was just expecting your usual hodgepodge of raw vegetables and I was pretty much blown away: asian cellophane noodle salads, marinated portabello salad, roasted vegetables, marinated fresh mozzarella with other italian style vegetables, chicken, and then all the regular salad fixings one would expect! I came here on my first day of work in Boston in September 2019; the bulgogi was great! HUGE portions. I stopped by again today after a few months and tried the chicken teriyaki. I lived in Seattle for the past 7 years and both coasts do their teriyaki VERY differently. Still, it is good just a different taste. Owners are such kind and sweet people. Hidden treasure for lunch! You usually can find a table or it's also good for take out. The rice/noodle bowls are delicious, huge portions and always very fresh and hot, perfect for any lunch day. Arguably one of the BEST places for salads. The salad bar always has a lot of variety (lettuce, Romaine, spinach, pasta salads, tomatoes, cucumbers, carrots, mushrooms, chicken, mozzarella, egg, corn, peas, onions, beets, artichokes, the list goes on and on), and it's always fresh -- I have yet to see any dingy or disgusting piece of lettuce or vegetable in the salad bar, and I've been eating salads here probably 2-3 times a week for the past year. (Recently they added fresh avocados to the bar! Amazing.) It's priced by weight and it _does_ get a little pricey if you fill up your container to be a full entree and not just a side salad. I don't like their salad dressing offerings, but as I work in an office nearby, I keep my own bottle of Paul Newman's at the office and am otherwise always happy to get a salad here. So the 4 stars go to my coffee. Ice coffee regular with cream and sugar. I don't know what made it taste so good but it was one of the best coffee's I've had in a long time, seriously. My ham, egg and cheese on the English muffin was good. Though whatever type of English muffin they use had a lot of salt on the outside, which I just brushed off with a napkin. The little woman behind the counter had a very pleasant attitude. And the woman sitting in the cafe with her baby mentioned I should try my sandwich on a croissant, but it was too late otherwise I would have tried her suggestion. Ate here the other day after walking by and seeing that it'd be renovated. The sort of dingey looking interior is now quite bright and cheerful, I was actually annoyed I hadn't brought my book because it was quiet and there were only maybe only 2 out of 8 seats (twotop tables) taken. The slight cognitive dissonance happening with the French name and Asian food is still there, but it adds to the charm I think. Plus they do loads of thoroughly Euro-American subs (only veggie subs on menu was the Caprese and Grilled Cheese though). Service was sweet with one staff person and neutral with another (I'm totally fine with both). Had the teryaki tofu w/fried rice. $7 and very tasty. I grabbed lunch here the other day. The owner and staff were all very nice and helpful. There are just a few seats inside, but it's clean and comfortable. There are newspapers on the counter to read. Interesting selection of food: breakfast, sandwiches & wraps, salad bar, and also hot entrees including stir-fry and Korean food. Then they also have bottled drinks and candy bars like a convenience store. I had the bi bim bap. It wasn't the best I've ever had, but the portion was great and so was the price.
