two bowls of soup on a tray

I absolutely loved the enormous amount of options to choose from for the malatong broth. There were so many different types of fish and meat balls to choose from, as well as vegetables, meats, and noodles. I definitely had the urge to want to grab everything. The broth was also a good amount of spice for choosing the medium hot option and was pretty flavorful! You will need to be mindful of how much you choose to include in your malatang for weighing as it is somewhat pricey. Overall, I would definitely recommend this place for malatang and will most likely come back for more in the future!

Taste wise, I'd give it a 4-star, but the steep prices it charges makes me subtract 1 star. If you're a small eater or only here for a snack, then you'd be looking at low $10 with tips/tax. If you eat slightly more you'd be looking at more than $15. If you want to be completely full or if you're a big eater, then a minimum of $20 is for sure warranted. They even charge $2 for rice, which is quite ridiculous given how most people just add noodles to their malatang (maybe that's the point, they want you to add more weight instead of getting the rice). The process is easy. You gather the ingredients (veggies, hotpot material, meat, fish balls, noodles...etc), give them to weigh, and get charged on how much you take. They would then do "malatang" and adjust the spiciness based on your liking. The food was delicious and I really liked the sauces and the soup. I support the concept and the freedom of "building your own bowl". The store is small, but decorated nicely and clean. You need to strategize on what you get in order to minimize the cost while maximizing the value. Avoid the heavy veggies, tofu, corn...etc, and take more meats, enoki or spinach. Even then, it's hard to gauge how much you should take and the price stresses me out when I'm taking my food. This is why I'd only give it 3 star. Malatang is a popular Sichuan streetfood and shouldn't be expensive at all. It's very easy to make (you can do this at home too) by literally dipping the ingredients in the soup until it's good to go. It is very similar to hotpot, so I cannot forgive the expensive prices. A solution for them is to put a scale there for customers to measure themselves before finally paying up.

You pick your ingredients, weigh it and they cook it for you with the selected broth. The ingredients are fresh and the service is good (the server was helpful). You get your own water from the side station. Basically this is a mini hot pot that costs $2.99/100gram (minimum of 400 gram-$12.99 and no maximum). Overall decent but found it a bit pricy for what it is.

I love Bone Soul Malatang !!!!! Their soup is the greatest. I love the location, easy access. I love the various options to put in and make my own version of Malatang. I also love the spicy level and cleanness of the restaurant as well.

It was my first time coming to the restaurant. Love the restaurant design, so cozy. New way of eating malatang. You get to pick whatever you want for your bowl, and they would cook It for you with the bone broth. You have a choice of really spicy to non spicy. Lots of selection for veggies, meat balls, noodles etc. Soup was nice and hot, not salty.. perfect for this weather. Would definitely come again as customer service was awesome and they keep it nice and clean!!!

This place reminds me of hot pot where you pick your own ingredients, own soup base, but then you don't have to do the cooking (which is actually the fun part IMO) We tried their bone soup and their hot spicy level. The hot spicy was a little too spicy for me to fully enjoy. The plain bone soup was pretty good. Their ingredients cost 2.99$/100g and there's 4 soups to choose from : original, mild, hot, extra hot. Our bowls were around 15$ each. You just have to be careful not to get carried away when getting ingredients at the station as they give you a big bowl to choose ingredients- and it can get pricey (we witnessed someone filling up the whole bowl and it cost 176$ - )

This is such a convenient and neat place to get your quick fix of noodles. They have a several shelves of ingredients that you personally pick and add to your bowl. It costs only $2.99/100 grams so you can practically add anything you want. This is great because the options included seafood items like clams and mussels as well as sliced meats and fish balls. They essentially have everything that you could find in a hot pot restaurant. Once I picked my ingredients, I went to the counter to weigh in my items. There is are several levels of spice that you can choose. I opted for the medium spicy broth. They give you a small wooden number which you place at your table. All you need to do is wait as they prepare your soup. My bowl was gigantic. It was steaming hot and very aromatic. The broth was not super oily and had a great sesame flavour. The spice level was perfect. I found all of my ingredients to be cooked very well. I overall enjoyed my experience here.

This is a very new recently opened restaurant located near north york subway station. For the uninitiated and people not from china, this place looks strange. Basically, you come in and they have a bunch of meat and veggies that you have to choose. but be careful because the ingredients are weighted by gram so it's very easy to get too many ingredients and end up paying a lot of money. after getting the ingredients, they will cook it for you and bring it out for you. I think the final dish is decent and pretty good. It was tasty and I don't have any complaints about it. I would come here again.

This place is pretty much a mini hot pot in a bowl. You basically pick raw/frozen items along with a variety of vegetables and noodle types then head to the counter to pay for it based on weight and wait for your bowl to be served with their special bone spicy broth. It doesn't sound like anything specjal but it tastes pretty good. I always get their regular spice level which to me is perfect. Anything spicer would be overwhelming. Just make sure you slurp the broth slowly without getting it down the other pipe in your throat otherwise you will be coughing for awhile. I've been here maybe 4 times already and will definitely come back for the 5th!

All you can eat Malatang! You can customize your own order by picking everything that you love in your bowl. I added fish ball, cilantro, taro, beef tripe and rice noodles! Then they will add delicious bone soup in your bowl! They have ramen, vermicelli, rice noodles, sweet potato noodles, etc. Their broth is soooo addictive! I really love it! For drinks, they have peach alcohol drink! And I picked the coconut drink This is their new DT location near Wellesley and Yonge that I went too. They have another location in North York!

How was the food? Okay so this place is actually pretty interesting and tastes decent. They don't really have a menu. The way you do it is that you pick all your ingredients from the ingredients section, they will then weigh it and charge you accordingly. I'd say if you are a person with big appetite it may cost you close to $20 dollars, but for a normal person, it should come to about $16 dollars to get full, small appetite people can run pretty cheap, one of my friend's bowl only costed her about $12. After they weigh it, you just need to tell them how spicy you want it. they have 4 levels, no spicy, mild, hot, and burning hot. Level hot was pretty okay for me already. By default they'll give you noodle soup, but I believe you can ask for no soup and eat your food like dry noodles if you wish. I found the way you eat very interesting, it is kind of like an alternative to hotpot, if you don't want to go full blown hotpot. The soup they use is very similar to hotpot taste. Would I recommend? Yes!

A newly opened malatang serving buffet style at $3/100 grams. The rate might seems to be kind of pricy at first, but their election includes beef and lamb similar to sliced rolls you see in hot pots. There is a great variety of selections, including many items you don't see often, such as green beans. And all the veggies are either frozen or soaked in water, there isnt any brown oxidization. However, this place fails hard at heat control. Perhaps due to its thick slicing, my pork belly were partially red. They did offer me a second heat, and it wasn't enough (it's no longer red but certainly could use more time to get more tender) and later on I also found the same issue with taro, and a chunk a peanut butter not dissolved into the soup yet. In general, heat control is hard because different ingredients are thrown into a boiling pot at the same time. Therefore it's important to slice some stuffs thinner.

The posters outside caught my eye, and I decided to come back with a group of three friends to try it out. We came a bit late around 8 PM, and most of the fish were already sold out except the original. We ended up ordering the Signature Spicy Grilled BBQ Fish ($40), a whole fish served bubbling hot with three toppings (potatoes, spam, and lotus root). You can choose between catfish and turbot, we chose the turbot fish. It looked extremely spicy, but the spice level was actually perfect. It was a bit on the oily side, but pairing it with rice balanced it out nicely. The fish was very tender and buttery, everything tasted amazing! We also ordered the Stir-Fried Egg with Tomato. The eggs were soft, the tomato sauce was rich. Not to mention the portion size was huge, we even had leftovers after eating until we were full. The restaurant itself was spacious, clean, and had plenty of seating. I think they were doing some sort of promotion so they gave us a $25 off coupon, though it expired pretty quickly so we didn't get to use it. I'd definitely come back for that grilled fish.

A few of their dishes come out on a sizzling plate with flames underneath. They are still in soft-opening mode with several specials. You can see the menus via a QR code. The Hunan cuisine is listed as "Hunan Noodles" and the Szechuan cuisine is listed as "Chopfire Menu". The Szechuan dishes are listed with 1 to 3 chilies representing the spiciness. If you can't handle spicy, then avoid eating the chili pieces and you might "survive". The restaurant decided to minimize their food offerings so that they can focus on refining their dishes in terms of quality and taste, including from customer feedback. We ordered the following: 1. Signature Spicy Grilled BBQ Fish ($39.95). 2. Home Stir Fried Beef ($21.95). 3. Bullfrog with Baby Ginger ($19.95). 4. Stir-Fried Cauliflower with Preserved Pork ($15.95). 5. Drunk Oolong (charcoal roasted oolong tea base) x 2 ($5.95 x 2). 6. Lemon Taro Balls ($7.95). We also saw the following: 7. Stir-Fried Sliced Pork with Green Pepper Noodle Soup ($9.99). First 10 customers each day, only pays $1.00. 8. Ink Painting Cocktail ($5.95). The Signature Spicy Grilled BBQ Fish came out on a huge sizzling platter. The BBQ Fish, a Turbot Fish, was very fresh and flaky, easily coming off the bone. There is no head attached like at typical Chinese restaurants but it would not have fit in the platter. The platter had a delicious sauce (soupy consistency and not sweet), luncheon meat slices, lotus root slices, and two other vegetables, along with chili pieces. The entire dish tasted great together with the various flavours. The menu listed it as 2-chili spicy but I could handle it by avoiding the chili pieces. The Home Stir Fried Beef is tender. It is listed as 3-chili but I could handle it by avoiding the chili pieces. The Bullfrog with Baby Ginger has the bullfrog cut up in little pieces; no you don't see a whole frog! The meat was actually good but most pieces have bones in it, so it takes time to eat it carefully. There was ginger slices in it but it, but we thought the slices were quite large! The Stir-Fried Cauliflower with Preserved Pork was very delicious! It came in a sizzling plate. The Cauliflower was flavourful and was not crunchy and not too soft. I've never had preserved pork slices before; it was quite good, not as salty as Chinese preserved vegetables. The Drunk Oolong has comes in a small bowl a with gin and ice. On the side, they include pieces of the charcoal roasted oolong tea leaves so you can smell it; quite a good smell indeed. You can also order it without the gin, which is what I ordered for mine (since I don't drink alcohol). It was such a nice drink! The Lemon Taro Balls dessert was pretty. In the centre was a slice of lemon. The customer service was good. There is plenty of indoor table and counter seating, including a small private room at the back. There is also an outdoor patio during warmer weather. There is pop music playing in the background. There is no free WiFi. The restaurant is wheelchair accessible, but there is no door-open button. There are two gender-neutral washrooms downstairs, so they are not wheelchair accessible. There is paid neighbourhood street parking. Review 2025-026
