My first time coming here was pre-covid, I decided to check out the Allston location as it was close by. Service was just OK, and your order can get a bit pricey, but the food was simply delicious. Havent been back to dine in person since, just takeout orders. A must-have are their renowned soy garlic wings! Fries are always crispy and lightly salted. As for the sushi, I was surprisingly impressed. I'm always thrown into a food coma after eating here, as the portions are huge. There was so much flavor in everything I tried. Well... first of all ... I usually get my excellent Korean fried chicken at bbq chicken in Kenmore square... honey garlic and always excellent fresh fried each serving. Notice another one in Allston Harvard st ... but Kenmore always good. I stop when in Boston area. This time , parking was tough in Kenmore, figured I would try Bon Chon... I had to be seated which means tip ... bbq you seat yourself and no tip needed. I ordered the small chicken wing drum combo soy garlic ... only 2 options vs. dozen or more at bbq. I ordered pork dumplings soy garlic as well. Food shows and I knew right away what a waste of money and big mistake I made eating here. Chicken was cold and appears tossed in sauce as after thought... I tasted no garlic, faint soy... basically flavorless and crunch nothing as good as bbq in Kenmore . The pork dumplings I should sent back... cold and hard as rock and no flavor like they were deep frozen for a year.... I had better frozen ones from Traders joes... not steamed or pan fried ... appeared baked in oven til noodle was rock hard... place should be embarrassed serving this trash ....cole slaw was surprisingly cold, creamy and good. Everytime I come to Boston I have to come to bonchon. This was the first place that I had bonchon and it never disappoints. The fried chicken is one of the best fried chicken I ever had. I came here on the recommendation of a friend. They seemed very overwhelmed but I was told my wings would come up in 15 minutes but it ended up being 40 minutes. When I inquired twice I was told it would be only 5 minutes more both times. When I asked for a refund they said the manager was not here. They finally told me they forgot to put the order in. Lol. Only 5 more minutes is what they tell everyone. They hadn't actually checked. Not planning on coming back. I do have to say the wings were delicious though. The wings were not as crispy as they once were. The bulgogi was not up to par...the beef was not tender as what the menu describes. Bonchon is known for their Korean fried chicken, which of course is a must get. They have changed their menus around recently but the chicken is always on the menu. There's actually a lot of seats inside but sometimes they do get busy and you might have to wait for a table. I've tried a couple of things on the menu but I always get the fried chicken! I usually get a mix of both the soy garlic and the spicy wings. They give pretty good sized pieces of wings and the drumsticks are pretty big if you choose drumsticks. Their wings are fried perfectly with a great crispy skin on the outside surrounding the tender meat on the inside. The soy garlic is the traditional flavor but the spicy definitely has some heat to it. If you're not good with spice, you might not be able to handle them. I also like their tteokbokki which is actually better than at most places. The rice cakes were really tender, just how I like it, and it also has noodles as well. I've also gotten their chicken for take out and of course it's not as good since it gets kind of soggy but the flavor is still there! read more

Yikes! I don't think I can come back to this Bon Chon if I don't see an improvement. Prices went up and quality of the food definitely went down. We ordered the half and half wings and both flavors were bland and not like how it was a few years ago. They no longer provide both pickled radish and Cole slaw as a complimentary side and only has an option of one or the other. It is given in a small sauce cup vs back in the day where it was in a miso soup sized styrofoam cup. We figured since we used to love the pickled radish and coleslaw so much, we would order it as a side and pay for it. It was $3 for two small sauce cups! Shame on me for not knowing what 3.5 oz was though. The pickled radish used to be so flavorful and tasted like it was steeped/marinated for a long time and paired well with the spicy and soy garlic wings. Now it tasted like the daikon was cut at the time of ordering and placed in a thing of vinegar. Same with the coleslaw. The coleslaw used to have more peppery flavor and the reason why I started to like coleslaw. Now it tasted like it is watered down and is store bought from a wholesales club. The portion of the fries were so much smaller, as well. They also wanted to charge extra for spicy mayo dipping sauce. What happened to the attentive staff from the past few years. Now Bon Chon is hiring kids that have no idea how to take an order or cash out without looking at their phone the whole time. Been a long time customer of Bon chon. Used to love their bulgogi stew, avocado balls, sushi and a few other dishes that have since significantly changed for the worse. I kept hoping they would improve but no luck. Now when I order, it's only for their half and half (sweet & spicy soy garlic) wings which have, for the most part, been consistently delicious. I would give 3.5 stars. It is average for Korean fried chicken. But in Boston, the chicken game is not quite strong, so perhaps comparatively it is on the higher side of the chicken leaderboard. Food I've tried: - We got the takeout family meal for $34 (12 wings, 6 drums, 2 sides, rice). - SOY GARLIC CHICKEN: I always opt for the bone-ful option, because the meat is always less dry when the bone is present. Seasoning wise, it's good. Not overly salty, a hint of sweetness to balance the flavors. Note, that the batter is not the typical thick batter you would expect from Korean fried chicken. It is on the thinner side and almost reminds me more of crispy chicken skin than a standalone batter. - SPICY CHICKEN: I frequented Bonchon more a few years ago, and the spicy was not as spicy as I remembered. It definitely is feisty, but level wise I would say it's on par with shinramen level of spiciness that is just a wee bit sharper. - For both chicken options, the meat was not overly dry and it was well seasoned. My only thing is, at other Korean chicken places they use smaller pieces of meat, whereas the ones used at Bonchon is quite chunky. This leads to a lower meat to batter ratio. So as someone who enjoys fried chicken for the goodness of that crispy exterior, I inherently would like a higher batter to meat ratio. - FRIED RICE: slightly slightly salty, but overall good. It tasted like ketchup fried rice, meaning there was a distinct ketchup flavor that came through. Which is not a bad thing, but very interesting. - FRIES: eh they were fries on the thicker side. I personally wished they were thinner and crispier. - PICKLED RADISH: so it's very interesting that fries, pickled radish, coleslaw is within the same category of side dishes that you can choose from. At all Korean fried chicken places I've been, the pickled radish is complementary and sometimes coleslaw is complementary. Usually fries are extra charge though. This is even the case when I dine in at Bonchon, you never really order pickled radish as it just comes with the chicken that you order. I mention this because if I am paying for a separate package deal, I expect to be getting more than what is just a free part of the meal. Also the radish that we got was in the smallest sauce container, with maybe 10 cubes of radish in it vs. the hearty portion of fries that we got. First, 10 cubes of radish is not proportional to 18 pieces of chicken nor for a family. Second, if they're going to be the same "value" side item, I feel like the quantity should be comparable. All this to say, if I were to have chosen the coleslaw and the pickled radish without the fries, I would be miffed that the 2 sides advertised in the package deal were just parts of the meal that would have been free anyway. The waitress/host was very nice, but that was the only good thing about this restaurant. The server looked like a random bystander, wearing regular clothes like he just came in off the street, delivered the wrong menu item and acted confused about it. Pretty sure he was high. We ordered tenders, he said "here's your wings" and they were actually drumsticks. It took 30 minutes for our tenders to come out. The fried rice was cold as soon as it came out, flavorless, and had a hair in it. The water was literally just tap water, I think it had one ice cube. We were perfectly respectful and gracious to the wait staff, as service workers ourselves, but they still talked crap about us sending the drumsticks back, scoffing in front of us. Terrible attitudes, 0 work ethic, and mediocre food. The dining area was very average, the booths were very worn, but I didn't notice until we left how gross they were. This review is long overdue as I've had Bonchon plenty of times. Their fried chicken is so crispy and tasty that it's really incomparable to any other fried chicken in Boston! I'm a french fry connoisseur, and their fries are so good it's my FAVORITE ever. Service can be slow when dining in as it can get busy any time of the day. Also the food isn't always consistent. Certain days it'll be deliciously huge drumsticks/wings, and fresh out of the kitchen. Other days they're tiny drumsticks/wings that taste mediocre. I also really like the kimchi bacon fried rice, but I miss the japchae they used to offer on their old menu. We ordered the crispy salmon salad, 20 pieces of the soy and garlic wings, tteokbokki, and kimchi & bacon fried rice. The crispy salmon salad was average. It didn't have much avocado as I thought it would have. The wings were very juicy and delicious although I think they used a little bit too much salt this time. The tteokbokki was rice and fish cakes in a spicy red pepper sauce with mozzarella cheese and onions. It was very good but a tad too spicy! I came here for a birthday dinner and relatively got a table pretty fast for a saturday night for 6 people. The food was delicious, i got the fried rice, XL soy wings, and (not pictured) the budae jigae and tteoboki. All this food was perfect for us. The soy wings were nice and crispy, the house fried rice and a lot of flavor, the tteoboki and jigae were slightly spicy but not overwhelming. I wish there was more glass noodles and rice cake/fish cake in the tteoboki, as i seem like they mask how much is there with the sauce and onions. For the budae jigae, i wish there was more noodles, but there was plenty of sausage which i loved. I visited Bonchon on the request of the boy I'm babysitting. He could not stop raving about Korean fried drumsticks - something I had never tried before, so I conceded and made the trek to Allston. We ordered a medium sized order of the chicken, half spicy, half soy garlic and Boodae Jigae. The medium order came with 10 huge drumsticks deep fried twice. The meat melted off the bone. I only managed to have two before feeling full! Out of the two flavors I definitely preferred the soy garlic. It was perfectly flavored. I could eat the spicy, but it was a little too hot to enjoy (keep in mind anything other than buffalo sauce makes my eyes water). I can't think of any other way to describe the soup than "Everything, but the kitchen sink", because that it was. It advertised as a spicy broth with meats, vegetables, and ramen. The assorted proteins included: spam, hot dog, tofu, and beans. The vegetables were less recognizable, but the bowl was steaming and much tastier than I have described. This dish was also spicy, but a little more manageable. Being a Sunday night, parking was a little difficult, but we managed to find a spot in a near by lot. The food is delicious, very salty however. The most disappointing thing was the price. Honestly, firstly, if you order from their site, you get the real pricing which was still way too much, sort of unreasonably high. The serving sizes is small based on their pricing. Like 16 dollars for about 3 dollars worth of fried rice. 50 dollars for about 25 dollars worth of fried chicken etc. The problem is that their own delivery system doesn't reach a wide range of Boston so one has to use Grubhub. If you compare prices, you will see that they increase the amount by about 25%! It is insane! First of all grubhub allows them access to customers they didn't previously so why charge such an insane mark up? Second, we already pay a grubhub fee so it is ridiculous. They really need to factor in Grubhub as a cost of doing business. Poor practices and overly salty food makes this a 2 star. read more

I've been to this specific location at least 3 times now. Out of the 5 different locations of Bonchon I'm accustomed to in NY and NJ, the one in Allston seems to have the most variety on the menu (sushi and other entrees/sides). But I can't say it makes it any better than the tri-state locations. The sushi here is pretty generic. Most recently, all the dishes came out cold. Usually every other location quotes a 25 minute wait time for fried chicken. This time, our order came out in 10-12 minutes after placing it and although the chicken was crispy and saucy, the wings were barely even lukewarm. The fried rice somehow had this extremely stale taste to it that no one at my table wanted to finish. The rice cakes were not spicy at all, bland even and the cheese wasn't melted. And on top of this, again, the food was cold which made them even harder to swallow. The French fries were the only item that came out hot and they were pretty good. I would still come back for the chicken on one of their good days, but really wish the Boston chains would do us all a favor and stay open later like the ones in NYC and Philly. read more

Bonchon is one of those places that never disappoints. That is, if you come here for the fried chicken. My friends and I expanded our dinner once and ordered a beef bulgogi. A typical bulgogi would include thinly sliced beef, super tender, with onions, in a sweet and savory sauce. They got the onion part but that was about it. About two thirds of the dish came all attached together as large clumps as it was all still connected to tough sinew and tendon pieces. Would not recommend anyone get this ever. read more

Tldr: great food as always, (generally) speedy and (always) safe pickup process I've loved Bonchon's chicken for years. This was a guilty pleasure back in high school and it remains a treat now. I'm a big fan of their current pickup process and how they try to keep everything moving. Actual food review: I'm impressed that the wings stay crispy and delicious even after a 20 minute ride home. The spicy sauce is addictively good and doesn't seem to burn as much as it used to (which is a good thing!). I'm not as fond of the soy though, it's been consistently too salty every time. I think if you order via phone they still include a side with wing orders but if you order via doordash, make sure to order sides separately if you want them. My first pickup experience wasn't great (3* for that particular time). I ordered via doordash and though it was marked on the app as completed, the order was nowhere to be found when I when I arrived. After some general confusion, I panicked a little when they suggested perhaps I accidentally ordered from the Cambridge location, they asked me to wait outside and come back in 10 minutes. The chicken flavors are regular and spicy, and I went with 3 other friends and we got the 40 piece with both flavors. I couldn't stop eating them, it was great. We went around 7-8ish and the place was already pretty full, but the service was fast and we didn't have to wait too long to get our food. Bonchon chicken always hit the spot. And I LOVED their tteokbokki. Giant rice cakes, boiled egg, noodles, giant dumpling (?), and CHEESE! Bonchon's tteokbokki was special because I started to ask for cheese on my tteokbokki at other restaurants (they all said no lol tteokbokki doesn't normally have cheese?)
