The carrots and cucumbers were perfectly crunchy. My only complaint is they stuffed the bowl with too many pieces of lettuce for volume and aesthetics - unnecessary and not authentic Vietnamese. My friend wanted the vermicelli bowl too but I had ordered the last bit of the noodles, so she got her spicy pork on rice which was equally delicious. I was very disappointed with the service and Pho at Bon Mi. It's not your traditional Vietnamese restaurant to start. When we walked in we were greeted with a glare by one of the employees and Eminem blaring in the background. Don't get me wrong I love music at restaurants, but this seemed a tad distasteful. We were the only people in the restaurant and our Pho took about 15 minutes. When we were presented with the "Pho Ga" it looked and smelled amazing. The portion was very large, but there were only about 3 pieces of shredded chicken pieces in the soup. A great alternative Pho restaurant is "Pho The Good Times" in Crescent Village. Vegetarian Pho and tofu Bon Mi is my go to order at this establishment. Although I doubt I'll be visiting it again. I'm not super stoked about my meal. While the pho is good enough to pass as pho, it's lacking the flavors the really make a bowl of pho magical. It was almost bland. It lacked the presence of what a true bowl of pho is. It seems like a quick pho thrown together where the flavors never really get to know each other. The Bon Mi is the saving grace of this place. The baguette is soft and delicious, while the pickled daikon topped on the marinated tofu all mingled together with the jalapeños and cilantro makes for a mean sandwich. Wow, red hot chicken was a very tasty meal in the heart of this downtown district here in Eugene. The place is quite large even though it does not look to be from the outside. The bahn mi sandwiches come in various flavors and with different types of meats. Had to have the red hot chicken and was not disappointed. Great flavor but with the hints of lime and cilantro that make the bahn mi a favorite of those whom love asian food. Bread which can often times make or break a good 'which was perfect. I give a 3.5/5. Not bad Vietnamese food for the Eugene area located in two nifty areas, though I think it more a good starter place for anyone interested in this type of food. I say starter since the pho and banh mi use grilled beef/pork/chicken with no options for tripe, pâté, beef tendon, etc. That's not a bad thing in the slightest. Deep maroon walls, white lanterns, clean white and grey counters, and plenty of wood tables to boot provide a loud-yet-chill atmosphere no matter how busy it gets. And it can get busy since they seem to have a rabid following with the UO students. Seems to be for good reason, as the menu sports reasonably-priced Vietnamese fair that turns out to be rather good. My party got grilled pork banh mi sandwiches and a bowl of pho with meatballs (a necessity to the pho experience). The pho was quite good. The broth was nice and beefy, slightly sweet due to the addition of hoisin sauce (another necessity), and light enough to not feel like a heavy dish at all. The noodles were cooked well, but since the broth turned out to be really hot, they ended up becoming too soft and overdone in a short amount of time. The beef itself was cooked quite well and the sprouts 'n' other greens added a lovely crunch contrast to the soft noodles. Then there's the banh mi, which were rather disappointing. While the typical ingredients are there for a basic pork banh mi, the bread was a big misfire. Now, usually the bread is super crispy and light due to the rice flour in the mix, but their use of french baguettes lessened the overall crunch. It didn't hold the aioli too well and ended up a tad soggy as the sandwich was consumed. Bon Mi is good for a casual no-frill Vietnamese eatery that has some tasty items, but simply left me a bit disappointed when I left. read more

At pho restaurants , you usually get thinly sliced raw beef that cooks in the broth and adds a depth of flavor but they don't give you any here. The slices of beef they did include were tough and leathery. The pork lemongrass bon mi sandwich meat was dry and lacked lemongrass flavor it was supposed to have. My problem, like with most other Eugene places, is the lazy service. I've called to place an order, they ask me to hold, and just leave the phone on the counter. I hear no other orders being taken. During lunch rush. So I hang up after 10-15 min and try to call back and for 20 MINUTES more the line is busy bc they haven't bothered to hang up the phone from my call. Seriously? Ordered the spicy beef , egg rolls & ice coffee. First off, the service was not great. After receiving my food, it didn't look appetizing and sure enough it was bad. The soup was just OK and the eggs rolls were way too big and the vegetables in the egg roll were not cooked all the way. The coffee was the worst thing. Water down , with no flavor. The portion is rather large but the quality of ingredients seems very poor to me. They use what looks like bagged chopped ice burg lettuce and the pork is SUPER chewy!! They just threw a bunch of whole cilantro on the top, stems and all. The customer service is bland. They are not friendly but not rude. I must have been there on a bad day but we went this past Saturday. We got there at 8:30. They close at 9. Now the restaurant protocol all over the world is that when you close at 9 it means you stop serving at 9. You don't tell the customers that they have to leave 15 min after they are served. The pho took 15 min to get to our table. Now we know that Pho broth vats sit in a kitchen ready for serving. I have eaten pho a hundred times and never waited more than 3-5 min to be served. The pho comes and it is the most TASTELESS I've ever had. The slices of beef were totally cooked, not raw as it should be served, AND tasted 2 days old. Broth had No flavor, no anise. I ate two mouthfuls and gave it away. The people that arrived right after us at 8:35 were told that they were not serving anymore, even take out. So they were turned away. If I were the owner or manager of this establishment I would let those 2 teenagers working that night go so fast. They were rude, unprofessional and even insultingly asked us to return all sauces and dishes to the counter before we left. Of course we were going to do that. We knew that was the kind of self serve restaurant it was. Duh. It was just insolence in their part. We're guessing they had a party to go to and weren't going to accommodate any customers if it caused them to be late. Anyway, as I ramble, I just want the management and owner to know how rude these 2 girls were. Perhaps your policy is to actually make customers leave at 9 when every other restaurant in the world generally stops "serving" at 9. If that's the case, that's your prerogative. It's about the latest trend in shitty Eugene service, which is to announce that you're closed and/or not serving far before your posted closing time. Last time we were there was on a Friday evening. There were a couple of groups sitting and eating their meals. We were rudely greeted by the counter guy who pronounced "If you want to order, it needs to be to-go and quickly, we're closing." Understandably confused by the sign on the door which indicated they closed at 9:00, I asked first, "What time is it?" He replied "8:30" (close enough, 8:28). I then asked, "What time do you close? -- to which he replied "9:00, but we don't have eat-in now, just to-go, that's the deal." Okay, asshole. We turned around and left; and likely won't be coming back. This isn't the first time they've randomly declared an early close and been jackhats about it. I'd get it if we were showing up just before close at a sit-down type of place (a rude thing to do), but this is a sandwich shop where prep takes five minutes and it takes maybe another five to eat said sandwich. read more
