I had high expectations at this restaurant because the reviews on Yelp and local people raved how amazing this place is. I came here on a Sunday afternoon and the restaurant was bustling. [[HIGHLIGHT]]We got seated right away at a booth with a window view.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] My waitress was an older Asian lady. She was very nice, not too talkative, but she was on top of her things. I was craving soup and decided on the highly recommended tom kha with tofu. To start, we had thai tea, thai coffee and the shrimp triangle. For our entrees, we decided on the pad see eu (they spell it pad se eu here), panang curry. The shrimp triangles were very yummy. Definitely get those. The thai tea and coffee was good, but just a little watered. I expected the taste to last in my mouth for a little bit. But it didn't. For the soup, I was excited to taste the soup! It smelled really good and it was boiling hot. My thought after my first sip of Tom Kha was, ok, this is good, they got it, but it just wasn't quite there. I couldn't pinpoint what was missing. Then I figured out that they didn't use full coconut milk. It was just a little bit and it was the lighter version. How disappointing! I wanted the robust tang, spice and coconut like how I have at home. The entrees made me sad. I really, really wanted to love it. The panang curry should be rich, thick and creamy. Instead it was soupy. I was really expecting and wanting the curry to stick to my rice, but instead it made soupy curry rice. My daughter pointed out that the curry and the tom kha soup was the same color and consistency. I didn't want to believe, but I think they used the same base and added the appropriate toppingss and seasonings to make a soup and a curry. My saddest dish was my last one that came out. It was the pad se eu. The wide rice noodles was wet and in broken pieces. I'm Asian and I'm from Vegas via Hawaii which means we have a lot of Asian cuisines, we know our food and have friends who work in high end Thai restaurants. (Think Lotus of Siam) When rice noodles break into smaller pieces, it means the noodles are probably not fresh and got hard. To soften, the cook used extra water and the heat was not high enough to cook, so it stuck to pan, making the cook mix it around more...broken wet noodles that doesn't brown. Overall, I really wanted to love this place. It has potential. Maybe it was an off day but on that day I went, it didn't give me the wow I expected. Most of the items has the taste on point. Please don't water down the curry or use lower fat coconut cream. I'm not used to having regular brocolli in thai food either, but I guess this is what Eugene likes or what we can get. My co-worker and I were both disappointed at all! We both ordered the pad see ew and it was delicious. I ordered mine with chicken. It was delicious, the sauce was tasty. Excellent and professional service. The food? I eat one dish here every time: the one most Americans (wrongly) consider the ultimate Thai food, pad thai. Even though it's a cliche in America, and nothing fancy by Thai standards. For years I have avoided pad thai, because in America, so often it is red. Ketchup red. And pretty horrible. The pad thai at Ta Ra Rin is exceptionally good. Not only made without ketchup, but all-around delicious. I always ask for the prik nam pla condiment (chili/lime/fish sauce) to amp up the flavor ... it's not impossibly spicy despite the use of very spicy Thai bird's eye chilis (spoon out the liquid and leave the chili slices behind). My friend and I were craving Asian food in the area and ended with Thai since we couldn't find much that interest us in the surrounding area. Parking lot is a little strange based on the GPS, since I was going into a few parking lots until I got to their parking lot, but I guess just follow your GPS here and you won't get lost. It's #1 in Eugene for a reason. Always clean, quiet and private inside and very spacious. I personally think the downtown location is superior because of the more organized seating inside and allows for better conversation. The servers are also so nice every single time and super accommodating. I've never had a bad dish here and no matter what you get it's huge. The coconut juice is yummy but overpriced for what you get, and I think most of the drinks are a little too tiny to justify the price. It's a reliable good time here. read more

So first off, I honestly thought I'd already written a review for this place, and now I'm a little sad I hadn't. It is by far my favorite Thai restaurant in the area. I rarely get to go because the price is slightly above my grab just because I'm hungry price range, but for the nice little atmosphere and the decent portions I make an exception from time to time. I love their signature drinks, and usually the service is on point. This last time... it was so bad we didn't tip. I am an avid tipper, and I can't see paying extra because someone wrote down our order and delivered our food and we never saw them again. For three entrees, two drinks and an appetizer for only two people, you'd think we could get water refills or asked if the food was okay or asked if we wanted another beverage. We even had to wait forever for the bill but wow! They were sure on it once they had payment! But I won't dock a star for that because I've had many good experiences here and I'd like to believe this is a glitch, not the norm. I love the food! I love bringing in people who have never been in to eat the food! The flavor profile is high, if you want it spicy it'll melt your face, and I always go home with leftovers. Is it authentic? No clue, all I know is that the meat is always cooked to perfection, nothing is bland, and if I want a pretty drink, I sure get to have a pretty drink. It's always clean, and they hire the sweetest hosts. It's the opposite of pretentious, you can dress up or down, and if you like who you're sitting with, it's easy to have a conversation while you wait a little for your food. It's not an over long wait so much as it's not fast food, and I appreciate some nice assembly and some time to enjoy it without feeling rushed. Take out is also a great option when you don't feel good and someone who loves you is willing to pick some up. Parking can fill up but turnaround is great and we've never had a problem finding a space. read more

Stopped by during a road trip from CA to portland. The food here was very tasty. The restaurant was spacious and popular. The papaya salad was a bit sour for my taste. However it does really cut through the savoriness of the other dishes. The pad kee mao was sweet, savory. Noodles were chewy and not too soft. The thai tea was good but a bit sweet. They were able to accommodate vegetarian options for us. We had Panang curry with tofu: I would rate this 4 star. the curry was good. smaller portion that what i am used to. I'm a sucker for some chicken Pad Thai, and this meal did not disappoint. We also ordered the eggrolls and coconut mango sticky rice (an obvious must). The mango sticky rice was the perfect sweet but refreshing treat to end the meal. The portions are huge, the flavors were on point, and take-out service was great. I was in Eugene to get my suv serviced at the dealership. I chose the Eugene service site so I could have lunch at Ta Ra Rin! I ordered my usual fresh rolls and papaya salad and for entree I decided to try the chef special menu item Mango Curry with chicken! Delicious! I can not believe I never tried it before now (and I M a big fan of pineapple curry, go figure). Chef specials for now on! The service is always great. There was a group of 4 or 5 people waiting for it to open around 1145 am. It opens at noon. The hostess/manager let them come inside and sit in the waiting area. I decuded to walk around a bit as the weather was nice. When it opened everyone was promptly seated. The place is always clean and the atmosphere pleasant and inviting.
