I've heard people rave about this place but never actually knew what to expect. The outside looks so run down, and surprisingly so does the inside. We head to the podium to put our names down, but it takes quite a while to be greeted. Eventually, we are. In the time we waited, we asked to eat at the bar, but it's only for drinks. Kinda weird, but that's fine too. While waiting, we notice the inside was hot. I'm sweating, my friend is sweating, the server taking care of us is sweating. It was not a fun time. Pax, unsure of spelling, took care of us and he was great. Kept our drinks full, not pushy in the slightest, and incredibly personable without being a helicopter. He was very knowledgeable, friendly, and prompt. I order the Havana Chicken with a Caesar Salad. The salad was delicious, crunchy, and fresh. The chicken was seasoned and very juicy, there's no arguing there, but it was super spicy. Now, I like spicy, but that was hurt your throat spicy. The rice was very so-so, but was really addicting with the cheese added on top. For dessert I had the coffee toffee, and I didn't make a dent. It was huge for the price, but it was delicious. Everyone raves about the desserts and I see why. Moist cake, melt in your mouth frosting, and prominent and addicting coffee flavor to be found everywhere. I'd easily come back for dessert. Besides taking a while to be acknowledged and the unnecessary indoor heat, the bathroom was fairly unpleasant. It could desperately be remodeled, deep cleaned, and given a soap dispense with soap. I also did notice that the air vents were super dirty and grungy, but that was just about every air vent I saw. Overall, I don't know if I'll be back for food, but if I need a cake or dessert down the road, I'll keep this place in mind. read more

Want to go out for dessert? Go here. We've been coming for years. Whenever we have a guest visiting Augusta for the first time, we use that as an excuse to go to Boll Weevil. The cakes are amazing and the portions are large. Will I share my cake with you? No. Well, maybe...but only if you also have something good to trade in return. The host and the server were lovely and that's why they get two stars. It's a cute little place and I could definitely see it as a first date or after date spot for the dessert. However, I'm going to suggest you go elsewhere if you are looking for a good sandwich. First we ordered the spinach dip app. While it was pretty tasty it was unevenly heated with the dip on top being cold and the dip at the bottom of the bowl was warm. I assume it was microwaved. The "homemade honey bread" was super dry. Like drier than the bread you buy off the shelf. They don't serve fries but instead a pasta salad (served with Italian vinaigrette) or chips (these aren't homemade chips and seem like they might have been pulled out of some off brand bag). I ordered the portobello sandwich...there was the lightest smear of ranch, a sliver of tomato, and some of the driest bread I have ever had. While the menu states that there is a 4% convenience charge for using a credit card, the bill suggest there is really just a discount for using cash. They have been around forever and I think I was expected by a bit better. Despite this, I still ordered a slice of cake which seemed to be what they are known for. It wasn't bad. As most reviewers will talk about, I agree with the desserts. They are one of the few establishments that serve outrageously sized dessert portions but still retain excellent quality and taste. Never again. First time coming here and the inside has a great vibe and is cozy. The staff was nice. But the food is just not worth it, especially at the price point. I got the brunch chicken and waffle for 14$. The tenders seemed like from a bag and were very small. The waffle was small and burnt, not super burnt, but enough to see and taste. The worst of it was the syrup, it was like water almost no taste and just not thick at all. The waitress said it was made in house from molasses and sweet tea. I have never taken back food in my life, this was the first time. I got the monte Christo sandwich instead. It was ok, not bad, but not good. The grits on the side I took home and it made my husband gag after eating it. My kid got the Italian sandwich which wasn't bad, but wasn't good. The chips were stale. Her brother got the shrimp and grits which came out cold and oily. He took it back and didn't want anything else from there so said to take it off the check. When the check came out she said she had to charge him for the salad he ate. This was supposed to b a salad that came with the meal. The meal he didn't even eat. It's been a while since I've been here, but I was spending time with my Mother this St. Patrick's Day weekend and we decided to drop in for dinner, since she said she never got a chance to try their food but she's sampled their desserts before in the past with other family members. We came during a somewhat busy time but had a relatively short wait of likely less than 10-15 mins. The St. Patrick's Day festival was going on downtown. I was last here several years ago during a visit home while in college with friends, and my best friend's wife was not a fan and we didn't have the greatest experience, but I must say the Boll Weevil has earned new-found respect from me and total redemption. The food, dining environment, and homage to downtown Augusta is just here, and I love it, because I love my hometown. Everything during this experience was absolutely awesome. I remember the deliciousness and uniqueness of their fried green tomatoes, so I told Mama we had to start with them. She and I both loved them, and they were served nice and hot. They drizzle them with a brownish sauce, which I believe is Balsamic Vinegar, and it just makes the Boll Weevil's very unique from other places I've tried. I have to have them every time I come thru. For dinner, I had the Reuben, in the tradition of St. Patty's Day, and this was by far one of the best Reuben's I've ever had. It was served hot and delicious, and the chips and Seafood Bisque, which could be used for dipping (if that's allowed), were both great complements. No trip to this establishment is complete without dessert, as they are known for their plethora of cakes and pies, and the gargantuan slices, but I only wanted the small, sample size, as I was pretty full from the meal. I was between the carrot cake and the lemon cake, and I just bit the bullet and chose carrot. Choices, choices . . . Needless, to say, it was powerfully delicious and absolutely perfect. The Boll Weevil is beautifully located along the RiverWalk and is just one of many reasons that so many flock to Downtown Augusta for good times, good experiences, and simply amazing food. I'm glad they have remained in the true center of the city for so long and have decide against moving outward. Downtown is where it's at and, in my opinion, where it always should be. We got some to go orders that took a very long time. the service was really slow and I asked why and they said because a large group came in and they had to serve them even if they passed 12 persons. we waited over 20 minutes to get our order of 3 soups. You can tell when a chef is confident of their food. No salt and pepper on the table. The corn chowder was very tasty. I could eat a pot of it. I missed a good roll or corn muffin though. Good seasoned crackers instead. Grits with shrimp was good and tasty. The portion was huge with 6 to 8 medium grilled shrimp. Either give me less grits or ore shrimp but it was tasty. Stopped by last night and bought a slice of the Red Velvet Cake to go from the cake counter as we have done for many years. It use to be $8 a slice and is now $14. Was the worst cake I have ever bought from there going for many years. The icing was good as usual but the red velvet cake was good awful. We got it home and threw it away. I ordered the turkey club with vegetable soup and made the happy mistake of ordering their 7th Heaven cake for dessert. I'll warn you now, it isn't meant for individual customers! Very rich, very filling, and very large! The price tag on the cake is not inflated, they really do give you that much to eat! I absolutely had to ask for a box, and even with that I'm not sure I'm going to be able to finish. That said, the food was good and I'm definitely planning on coming back. read more

Right on the riverfront across from the Marriott you will find the biggest slices of cake in Georgia. Ok, I don't know if that last statement is true, but I am 190 pounds and have a hard time finishing a slice. Don't be greedy, share! They have a few vegan options. I had the vegan chipotle burger. For your fries lovers, you're not going to find them here. Your options are chips or pasta with your burger. It was slightly spicy. I don't like spicy food and I enjoyed it so you can take the heat. Is the first and only time I've actually eaten in the place. We were greeted with a smile and the server was attentive and friendly. I believe the biggest draw to this place are drinks and the cakes. The BLT Fried green tomato sandwich add pimento was very disappointing. White bread. Poorly toasted with fake butter, two very thin very greasy not fresh small medallions of fried tomato with absolutely no flavor. Wilted Arugala, pre cooked bacon and a bright yellow orange something resembling cheese whiz. Thankfully we were warned to stay away from the "seafood bisque" that has pollock only. The "homemade" pasta salad was stale with barely any flavor tasting of canned ripe olives and brine with limp rotini and a pre shredded packaged sprinkle of poor quality white dry tasteless cheese. Honestly , save yourself the trouble and disappointment. Order a piece of cake to go and walk to the river front and enjoy the view and eat it. We found this café while searching for desserts, and it was just too good for that purpose. Not only did the menu have a wide variety of desserts (everything from peanut butter to chocolate to lemon flavored cakes and pies), but they also had a nice selection of IPAs. The staff was very friendly. Even though we came close to closing, I didn't notice that we had held them up until we were done. Boll Wevill makes my Top 5 for best desserts in the Augusta area. I've enjoyed the 7th heaven cake, banana chocolate chip cake, perfect chocolate cake, and the Coffee Toffee Cake. My husband and I decided to try out Boll Weevil for our rare date night, and unfortunately we were a bit disappointed. We ordered two appetizers - the spinach dip was only slightly warmed up on top and cold underneath. It honestly tasted like the spinach dip from frozen spinach and a packet of powder that my mom used to make for holidays... not great. The highlight of the entire experience was the fried greed tomatoes. The absolute best fried green tomatoes that I have EVER had, and the sauce that they serve with it was perfectly paired. Then the entrees- My husband ordered the chicken entree. The seasoning on the chicken was underwhelming, and the rice was a bit undercooked. After the reassurance from our waiter that the salmon entree was "VERY good", that's what I ordered. Although the seasoning/flavor was nice, the salmon was over cooked to the point of a rubbery consistency. I think this is probably just the kind of place that you should stick with what they seem to cater most to, which is their sandwiches. The tables around us had some very nice looking sandwiches, so that was our mistake. We decided to splurge and order a few desserts to get the full experience, since my husband had heard so many good things about their desserts. We also figured that for $10-11 a slice, it had to be that outrageous of a price for a reason! Key lime pie, strawberry cake, and apple blossoms. The key lime pie wasn't terrible, but the filling to crust ratio was way off, which kind of made it not so exciting to eat. The bottom layer of crust was very thin compared to the volume of filling, and the outer crust was probably 1/2 an inch (or more) thick. The strawberry cake made me the saddest. I was expecting a light, moist, strawberry infused cake. Unfortunately what we were served was dry, had very little strawberry flavor, and the outside of the cake layers were crusty/well-done. That part should have either been shaved off, or that cake just should not have been served. The buttercream was also very underwhelming and the ratio of icing to cake was way off. If it wasn't for the strawberry sauce on top, it would have been completely inedible. The people next to us ordered a piece of banana cake and it looked so fluffy and was covered in delicious looking icing, which was what made us so excited to get a slice of cake! (My husband doesn't like banana, otherwise that's what I would have ordered.) The apple blossoms were decent-ish but not worth the money. It was mostly pie dough with very little filling, and the pie dough didn't have much flavor. I was a bit thrown off by the orange tinted vanilla ice cream served with it, but that ended up being pretty good! Our waiter was mediocre.. nothing really to comment on, good or bad. For people who don't have a lot of money to spend and rarely get out, it's heartbreaking that we spent our date night on a very expensive, not very good meal. I'd maybe consider going back to try a sandwich if we were in the area again, and I would absolutely recommend going for the fried green tomatoes. But I can't say that I'd be back for dessert or any entrees. This isn't a restaurant I'd recommend going out of your way for, which was what we did. But if you're in the area - grab some fried green tomatoes. read more

The presentation was immaculate and the slice was huge. The taste however was disappointingly average. The sponge was quite dry and the cheesecake portion tasted a little too salty.
