Southern Gent Sammich was so dry. I got the Southern Gent Sammich and husband got Cuban, both with pasta. We split our sandwiches so we got to try both. Cuban was ok, but the Sammich was disappointing. I literally couldn't finish my half because the bread was almost 3/4th of the sandwich and was so dry. Maybe the foccacia bread is meant to be that dry, I don't know, because usually when I have foccacia it's with oil and vinegar. Having it as the sandwich bread didn't seem to work out because everything was dry and eventually it was crumbling all over our plate...I ended up only eating the meat portion and left the bread on the plate. As with my husband's other half of the sammich, he barely got any meat. He had to open the sandwich up and spread the little amount of meat he got. My husband normally never complains about food, but even he commented on how dry it was. He doesn't like wasting food so he just finished it. I couldn't. The staff are all nice, but overall food experience was truly a let down. read more

One of the top dessert spots in the CSRA! They have a designated area for To-Go Cakes & Cheesecakes. Downside is that there's only one register, so if the line is long, you gotta wait. BUT that's also a good thing because that makes it first-come first served. Cause once a flavor is gone, they're probably done for the day. Like there was only one slice of Hummingbird Cake remaining after I ordered a slice of Hummingbird Cake & Blueberry Cheesecake. And there were about six people in line after me. I think it's a few cents less if you pay with cash. They have a dedicated parking lot which is cool because they're tucked into the end of a dead ending street and parking is minimal. I had the blueberry cheesecake. It was pretty good. I didn't eat it immediately, so it cooled down some before I ate it. However, it was still good when I did get the chance to devour it! Delicious. My friend and I may have had too high of an expectation for Boll Weevil. We thought the cakes would be amazing after seeing all of the raving reviews. Unfortunately, we were extremely disappointed. She got the Hummingbird cake and I got the 7th Heaven cheesecake/cake combo and they were both extremely disappointing. Way too sweet plus the cake was dry in both items. If you are known for your cake, your cake should not be hard and dry! On the savory food side, it was even more disappointing. We got the spinach artichoke dip that tasted like it was frozen. In fact, it was actually cold in the middle. Then we both got sandwiches. I got The Jerk and she got The Portabella and both sandwiches were tasteless. I am not sure what is so special about their freshly baked honey wheat bread, but it was dry. Overall, this was one of the most disappointing and overpriced meals I have ever had. read more

The best cake in the world. And I've eaten lots of cakes over the years and in different cities and places. All their cake slices are huge enough to share or for one person to eat over one or two days. Seriously huge (to be fair the slices are expensive but the price is worth it). The icing on all of these is so good I could just eat the icing by itself. And this is coming from someone who usually wipes off the icing on cupcakes or cakes. When compared to their cheesecake, the cakes are significantly more worth it. Or even better, get the Red Velvet Delight and you can have your cake and eat cheesecake too! It's two huge layers of red velvet with a layer of cheesecake in between. My favorite!!! Another favorite is their strawberry cake and the icing is the best part on this. I also love the Coffee Toffee cake. Pieces of crunchy toffee with coffee flavored icing and dense chocolate cake is a match made in heaven. I could go on and on about their dense yet fluffy, delicious cakes, but really this is something you need to try for yourself. Do not leave Augusta without trying one. Serious. As for their cafe/food part of the restaurant it's just meh. But still 5 stars just for the cake alone. read more

Talk about an Augusta staple! This place is a must-try for any Augusta visitor or Augusta native, and the reason is this... the CAKE! Saying the slices are big is an understatement. They may be about $11 each, but they are enormous! We split 2 slices between 5 people (after eating lunch), and we still had a few bites left. Plus, they are absolutely delicious. You can't go wrong with any option. This particular visit, I had the Velvet Delight and the 7th Heaven. Super rich and super moist. In the past, I've had Strawberry, Red Velvet, and Carrot Cake, and I can't even choose a favorite. Unfortunately, the non-dessert food leaves a bit to be desired. I would not recommend the Southern Gent Sammich. The focaccia bread was painfully dry and mealy - more like a bad cornbread than foccaccia - and it made up the majority of the sandwich. There was very little roast beef, and the fried green tomatoes were thick, hard, and not even breaded. However, the pasta salad that comes with the sandwich is tasty, and I know they do have some good items on the menu. Da Bomb Mi is a tasty sandwich, and my coworkers absolutely raved about the Pasta Creole, so perhaps I just need to order a different dish next time! Overall, I would definitely recommend Boll Weevil, even if you must beware of certain non-dessert menu items. It's a cute, casual vibe inside, and the service was great. There is parking behind the restaurant, right off James Brown Blvd (if you didn't know if was there, you might miss it!), and even though it seems small, we had no trouble finding parking during the Friday lunch rush. Stopped by the other day and split 3 slices with some friends. We ordered the red velvet delight, lemon delight, and coffee toffee slice. Every slice's cake portion was dense yet moist, definitely superior in texture to a grocery store cake. I would personally avoid the cream cheese centered cakes overall in the future because even though it adds a nice change in flavor and temperature, the standard cheesecake interior did not stand out as much as the cake portion (for both the ones we had). The frosting is dense and a bit sweeter than I would like, but overall each cake was enjoyable. We all preferred the coffee one as the bitterness of the chocolate and coffee flavor prevented it form being overpoweringly sweet. At about $11 per slice w/o tax/tip, it seems on the pricy end but each slice is more than enough to feed even two people if eaten as a dessert. Would definitely consider coming back to order a slice as takeout in the future to have with coffee/milk. read more

My husband and I came here for a quick lunch. For this place to be downtown, there was plenty of parking. The restaurant is pretty spacious and we were seated quickly. They didn't have any straws for our drinks which was really disappointing so we got our drinks in paper cups. We had the fried green tomatoes for an appetizer. The actual tomato could have been crispier, seasoned more and the balsamic was not needed. However, that horseradish sauce was amazing! It made everything taste better. I had the BLT and my husband had the Southern Gent Sammich. My BLT did not have enough B, L, or T but the bread was really good. My husband loved the filling of his sandwich but hated the bread. He said it was too soft and it needed to be toasted. We had dessert and it was pretty good, I just wish it had less icing. We were on a road trip, from Philly to Orlando, and we stopped for a few hours in Augusta to walk around for a while. We still had several hours of driving left on this day so we wanted something fast and affordable, preferably walkable from the River Walk. I looked for "iconic Augusta restaurants" and found this place on several lists. "Huh, sandwiches sound good. But why is it iconic? How good could a sandwich possibly be?" The music was full of bands that could all be openers for Yellowcard. The booths even have that slight 5-degree decline to them so they're comfortable to sit in and lean back against. I came here with a group of co-workers after work. The restaurant had plenty of bigger tables for our group. it was a casual and comfortable environment with great food. With a wide variety of food from the menu, there was something for everyone. I got the Cuban, and it was one of the best Cubans I've had. The pasta salad that it came with was really good too, although you can sub it for chips as well. After dinner we all got either a piece of cake or cheesecake. This place has the best sandwiches and cakes hands down. The food didn't take too long to come out, and the service was great! One word: DRY absolutely everything we ordered was dry and I was SO sad. This was our first time here. We have heard great things about it and we're absolutely stoked to try it. PARKING is in the back and easy to find - plenty of spaces. We are arrived with the host, she was kind. Brought us to our table and service was relatively good. We ordered the pimento cheese burger sub sourdough bread instead of the roll (awful awful idea). The burger was literally on one HALF of the side of bread. They also just threw it on there. No toast or butter or anything, which made the burger so dry. I ended up ripping the extra bread off and tossing it to the side. The burger it's self, dry and not flavorful. I couldn't even taste the pimento cheese (probably cause they put a spoonful on top) and in so spots on top where the cheese was, it was so thin you could see the burger patty. I got the pasta salad with it. WORST PASTA SALAD ever. The box from Walmart would have been better. Tasted like stale pasta noodles that needed more wet ingredients. My man got the jerk sandwich and the idea was good-poorly made. Again. Dry. Little meat on the sandwich and dry crumbly bread. He got the seafood soup and it tasted premade from a can and watery. Lastly, we got the 7th heaven cake.... I about cried. It was DRY as heck. The cheesecake in the middle tasted spoiled and sour. The only tasty part of it was the light brown ganache. The chocolate cake its self was so dry we wouldn't even get it on a fork. It just crumbled and we left all but like 5 bites out of it. I'll put this here cause I'm already sad, the whipped cream is from a can and I wish it was homemade considering they are a dessert and cake place. Overall- we probably won't be back. My vegetarian bride and I chose the Boll Weevil to celebrate our 10th wedding anniversary. Rather than write an essay detailing how wonderfully delicious and meaty the Cuban sandwich tasted, i'd rather tell you the reason we chose the Boll Weevil. 10 years ago today my vegetarian girlfriend became my vegetarian bride. Rather than get a forgettable typical terrible wedding cake, we bought six different cakes from the Boll Weevil, and we placed our cake toppers on one of them. During the course of four hour long party that was our wedding reception, several guests came up to us with increasing levels of imbibement, and bragged how they had eaten pieces of all six cakes. Over the last decade party guests have reminisced to us about all the cakes, and of course, how beautiful my vegetarian bride looked on that day. As for today, we celebrated with a piece of Red Velvet cake, this time adding a third fork for our daughter. The Boll Weevil is more than a restaurant you would remember. If you have a sweet tooth definitely try out Boll Weevil. I recommend going on Sundays since there is a discount on the cake. I usually get mine to go so i go straight to the dessert room where the cakes are on display in the case. My favorite is the 7th Heaven cake with chocolate cake and a creamy cheesecake center (others that I've enjoyed are the lemon, stawberry, and the red velvet with cheesecake in the center). If you want super rich and decadent cake theb coffee toffee is the one for you. The slices are huge and great for sharing or like me you can eat it over the course of 2+ days. I love adding a scoop of vanilla ice cream with it once it get it home. I've also tried some of the cheesecakes there and would also recommend (my favorite is the white chocolate raspberry) read more

I've always been a fan of their GIANT cakes (that are $1-2 off per slice on Sundays), but I didn't know they served meals as well! I went today with my friend, and I ordered the cuban panini sandwich with a side of chips. The ham they used was juicy and flavorful. I didn't expect the hoagie roll to taste so good, but the panini press gave it a nice, satisfying toast that isn't typically present in hoagie bread. The spicy mustard and dill pickle gave this sandwich a burst of sour flavor with a slight kick. The chips were your standard, run of the mill crinkle-cut salted potato chip. My friend ordered the Tree Hugger, and he said that even though it didn't have any meat, it still filled him up. For dessert, we split a heaping slice of Canary Lemon cake, and it was delightful. The cake was airy and fluffy, with a subtle lemon flavor baked inside. The cream cheese frosting was a bit heavy, but that's to be expected with any cream cheese base. The cake also came with a bit of lemon jelly-like topping near the tip. It was a great experience overall. The tableside service was attentive, and our server seemed happy to help us. While on our anniversary weekend in Augusta, we decided to try Boll Weevil and it happened to be on Father's Day. I ordered the chicken salad which was not satisfying. Felt like a huge clumpy portion of chicken salad on plain romaine. Healthy it is not and needs to be rethought with more veggies. Outdated dining room (circa 1998?) added to the feeling of blah. Waitress was nice and we had a nice chat with one of the owners.
