I worked at a bodacious for a year during my high school years. Not once did I have a customer complain about bagging on a carry out. Why in the gods green earth this owner allows his employees to bag items in paper bags is beyond me. A rational person would not put a pint of bbq sauce with a paper basket of pickles, semi wrapped in plastic, into a paper bag. I'm baffled by it after picking up my paper sack and everything falling into my driveway. I like bodacious bbq, however, I won't be spending my hard earned money at this particular one again. Roland would be ashamed at the service.

My brisket was so dry with no flavor that it made me sad. I poured so much sauce on it and it didn't do anything. I thought about the lovely smoker out in front that I passed by before walking inside. The smoker had given me so much hope. And the stack of wood that was as tall as me. So much potential... My ribs were also tough. They weren't smoked long enough. Not enough love went into them. The only think I enjoyed was the coleslaw. I had some brisket left over but didn't bother to take it home, thinking if it's that dry when I was eating it, I know it's only going to taste like beef jerkey once it's nuked in the microwave.

Half pound of ribs and a quarter pound each of brisket and sausage

I finally made it out to East Texas to visit some friends and naturally, as I do with all places I travel to, I sought out some BBQ. My friends mentioned they really loved Bodacious and all the reviews on yelp were pretty good, so I figured why not. Bodacious' set up is like most BBQ places you will go to, you will order at the counter then take a seat with your food. It is a simple set up and nothing wrong with that (something that I prefer too, no pesky waiters getting in between me and my 'Q." As with all my other first-trip BBQ visits, I went heavy on the meat and ordered by the pound: half pound of ribs, quarter pound of sausage and a quarter pound of brisket. The Ribs: Definitely the thing Bodacious does best. This untrimmed pork spare rib has lots of nice flavor, a nice smoke ring to complement that, with a moist texture to boot. The meat separated from the bone fairly easily too, so they know how to do ribs here. Did not notice much rub or seasoning on the ribs. But as I said, best of the three meats I ordered and very solid overall. The Brisket: My portion featured cuts of the lean side (the flat) of the brisket, with a nice coloring and smoke ring. The brisket had a moderate smokiness to it and was fairly moist considering the cut (the lean cuts tend to dry out faster after being sliced than the fatty side of the brisket). Not a very thick bark to it, but still a nice BBQ brisket. As with the ribs, seasoning was not prevalent. The Sausage: Although cooked well, I thought the sausage was fairly average. Just your run-of-the-mill pink casing sausage. Tasted nice, but nothing really amazing. The Sauce: I thought the sauce was pretty interesting, as it did have a bit of a kick to it. Not necessarily due to spice, but just the vinegar content makes it pretty tangy, which I liked. It would describe the color as rust-colored and had a very runny consistency. Overall I was very happy with my Bodacious visit. Very solid, no-frills joint; a place to stop in and quell your BBQ cravings.

It's good. Not PHENOMENAL like everybody has told me. But it's good. Nothing really special or anything to rave about.

Coming from the big Texas cities and fancy bbq, Carter's is definitely a no frills local joint and super packed. Love the atmosphere and the people are as sweet as their tea. Huge portions! I just don't see why folks don't want to eat the juicy, moist, fatty portions of the brisket!?! That's is the best part...but next time I will remember to ask to get those pieces. Now the regular brisket it was necessarily dry...but it just wasn't the fatty lusciousness I'm use to eating. When you walk in the people behind the counter were really nice and actually SPOKE! Now being from East Texas that's what I'm use to and miss about people. Living in the DMV area now these folks can't be really standoffish and that's why I can't wait to go back soon...but I digress. I really wanted to try the turkey but it was already sold out by the time I made it there. So make sure you come early to try it. I did wish they offered chicken because that would have been a great addition to my meal. My two sides were potato salad and coleslaw. Both of which I really don't like. Straight to the point bbq spot down in East Texas and can't wait to come back to hopefully try the turkey and MOSIT brisket!

My husband challenged me to find somewhere new, and Yelp led us to Fat Boyzzz in Longview, TX. I'll be honest--I'm not usually a soul food fan, so I wasn't especially excited about trying it. But my husband had been craving some good soul food for a while, so we decided to give it a shot. The restaurant had excellent ratings and reviews, but I was still a little skeptical. When we arrived, the place was packed, which is usually a good sign. Thankfully, we were seated right away. Our waitress let us know upfront that there would be about a 30-minute wait for the food. Our first interaction with her was a little rough--she seemed stressed and was somewhat abrupt while taking our order. My husband was initially put off, but he was determined to get his soul food fix. Now, whenever I see grilled liver and onions with brown gravy on a menu, that's what I'm ordering. I'm a Luby's girl through and through, and until today, I would've said nobody does liver and onions better than Luby's. Fat Boyzzz changed my mind. The liver was sliced a little thinner and wasn't quite as tender, but the flavor more than made up for it. Every bite was absolutely delicious. And that's not even the best part. The mashed potatoes and brown gravy were phenomenal--rich, flavorful, and pure comfort food. My husband ordered the fried pork chops with mashed potatoes and cream gravy. The entire meal, all he could talk about was those mashed potatoes. Between bites, he'd keep saying, "These mashed potatoes are AWESOME! This gravy tastes just like my Naw-Naw's gravy!" My husband is a big, burly guy with a deep voice, and hearing him repeatedly praise the food while happily devouring his plate was entertaining all by itself. This was truly food for the soul. We left full, happy, and completely comforted by a fantastic meal. Fat Boyzzz has definitely earned repeat customers in us, and we'll absolutely be back. Highly recommended!
