Small place big flavors! We have these in Louisiana and the the food never leaves you feeling satisfied. We got sloppy Joe & sliced beek sandwiches. Both excellent. Both sides tasted fresh even though it was late in the evening. The gentleman behind the counter was nice and got our food out quickly and order correct. read more

I was visiting here from Kansas City where I'm used to fantastic BBQ. My favorite is Gate's. But today, I found BBQ that beats my favorite in Kansas City. I ordered the beef brisket sandwich. I been chasing BBQ all over Texas and finally made it to the original Bodacious BBQ location on Mobberly. Just want to start out by saying 3 stars is too little and 4 stars is too much. This is a solid 3.5 rating. First, I love this little BBQ shack. I loved walking in and feeling like I was thrown back in time when life was simpler and all that mattered is smoked meat. Because that's exactly how it felt. The pitmaster was a super nice guy and nothing brought me more satisfaction than watching him throw meat down on that wooden slab that looked like it had a hundred thousand miles of meat cutting on it. The staff was nice, kind, and super welcoming. Unfortunately that's kind of where it ended. The ribs were a little over cooked (meat was just falling off the bone). Brisket tasted kind of like pot roast, not much of a smoke ring on it. Sausage had a weird texture to it. The thing I loved the most was the freakin potato salad. I had been hearing great things about this bodacious location for quite a while and knew I had to stop in while driving through Longview. We came in on a Thursday at 2 and there was no line. The restaurant was just what you'd expect from an east Texas bbq place. Traditional meat market line and super old furnishings. The brisket was probably some of the best I've had. Supposedly they cook their brisket for over 24 hours very low and it was definitely evident. Pair that method up with SRF or 44 farms brisket and theirs no way it won't be quality. The brisket was trimmed and seasoned in a very balanced manner. I can't say enough good things about this brisket. (A+) It was a welcome surprise to have baby backs instead of St. Louis cut ribs. I'm always a bit Leary of getting baby backs since they are more lean but was very surprised with the moistness and flavor. Whatever he's doing to these is working. They have a bit of a tacky glaze. (A) I also got a traditional link and really love the fat to meat ratio and the grind size. The casing had a good snap and it also had a nice smoke ring. This may be the best I've had with the exception of south side, giddings, kreuz and smittys. (A+) The Turkey was good as well. Not as moist as some others. (B+). The regular bbq sauce great as well and I loved the Mayo based potato salad. And to top it all off I got out of there for $25 for .5lb of brisket 3 ribs a link and a slice of turkey. That can't be beat relative to all Houston places I frequent most often. Hats off, I'll be back if I'm ever headed through east Texas in the future. read more

We stopped in during a cold rainy day. I could not wait to have some warm pintos and fresh slaw. The sliced beef sandwich was tender and moist. Everything was delicious and spiced just perfectly. If I could give it 10 stars, I would this is the grand Puba of barbecue restaurants in East Texas this is the restaurant at all. Others are measured from if you want brisket that falls apart on your plate so very tender that you can tear it apart with a spoon. The first of four stops on a beautiful spring Thursday, we arrived in time to get in line behind maybe a dozen fellow diners, and the door opened within 10 minutes. Moving inside, the decor and atmosphere is textbook country BBQ joint in every way. Most BBQ places wish they could have this patina and look, it was really nice. Once to the front of the line, we ordered an array of meats. Here's what we ordered and the details on each: Taco sausage - The Thursday menu special, this is about what one would think it might be, meat flavored with taco seasoning, as well as a couple of different cheeses. It was very moist and juicy, and very tasty. Crumble this up on a tortilla and you'd have a nice taco! House sausage - Another very juicy, coarsely ground link, this time with more traditional seasoning, including a heavy dose of sage, making it more reminiscent of a breakfast sausage (a good thing). It was very delicious, one of the best meats of the day. Fatty brisket - Best brisket of our day, this was very moist, smokey, and had a wonderful crust and perfectly rendered fat. Truly great stuff, and doubtless part of what landed this joint at #4 on the Texas Monthly list last year. Ribs - Perfect texture, slightly sweet rub, and good smoke all combined to make these a wonderful dish, easily worthy of just eating as a meal on their own. Turkey - The pitmaster threw a slice of this on out plate gratis, and it was a nice morsel. Neither super moist nor dry, it was well seasoned and had a good flavor. Bodacious also has two shop made sauces that are sold to go in addition to dine in, and while they were both quite good, we don't usually go to them, and definitely didn't need them today. This was a great visit to a joint that brought high expectations, and those expectations were exceeded. We'll definitely be coming back here on a future visit. read more

We ate at the one on West Loop and the food was very good. It just seemed a bit pricy for 2 sandwich platters, 1 sandwich with one side and 1 tea and two waters. Service was friendly and efficient. Nice people. Beans were good, but hard to mess up. Everything else was less than okay: brisket, ribs (not like bbq ribs at all), potato salad. The burnt ends were inedible, sticky sweet coating. We did not care for the potato salad at all, but maybe it's an acquired taste, it's different. We threw a lot of the food away. Will never go back. The reviews are generally good and I've read about bodacious, wanted to try it. We're spoiled -- there's so much excellent bbq out there. This was not it (in our opinion). Disappointed. Another TM Top 50 visit. Check. Yelp says 10:00 opening. Not. 11:00. For the Secretary of the Interior and I we ordered 1/4 lb. of brisket from the point (fatty end), 1/2 lb. of ribs (3 ribs) and a house-made sausage. No sides, that only complicates sizing up the meat for me. We did have some of the free beans. First things first, and you BBQ people know what that means. Brisket. I'm here to tell ya, brisket perfection. Serious perfection. Not only does the meat simply flake apart with the most gentle pull, but it literally drips rendered fat. The slices glisten with juicy fat. The bark is dark, thick, crisp, and flavorful. Smoked perfection. Brisket does not get any better than this. The ribs were also very nicely done. The meat, as it should not, did not fall off the bone, but it separated cleanly from the bone when pulled. The nice light caramelization of the sop or sauce on the ribs indicate a long, low, moderate heat cook. I could not bring myself to even try dipping a rib into the provided sauces it was so balanced and tasty. The house made sausage was good, but nothing I would be interested in having again. It reminded me of a German brat, which has a definite place in the world of sausages, but just not what I'm looking for in a BBQ joint. I was not at all impressed with the beans, just nothing about them rang the bell of my taste buds. Pretty flavorless. As you know there are some joints in Texas that do not serve beer or wine. I have yet to encounter one that will not allow you to carry in your own... until now. And that's fine! It's their store and they're in charge and they can do what they want to do. I had heard about this place from Texas Monthly, so naturally when work took me to Longview for a few days I had to try it. I offered to take my customers there on the first day. They said that they had never been because they go to Carter's which is a local joint that's been around for years. They agreed to go with me, so we made the drive only to realize that they are closed on Mondays. Naturally, they then suggested Carter's, so I reluctantly agreed. I watched them slide what little bark their brisket had, right into the trash, then start slicing it. I knew then that this wasn't going to be good. I got turkey and sausage and watched my client devour the brisket and cover it in BBQ sauce. I was sad for him because he didn't know any better. On the way back to the office, my customer is telling me how he eats at this place every week, gets it on holidays and buys bottles of the sauce. I told him, just wait, I'm going to introduce you to real deal Texas BBQ. So I take him back to Bodacious and order for the both of us. This was the first time my customer had a taste of a burnt end, and good moist brisket with bark. It was everything I had hoped for. Needless to say, no BBQ sauce was used on the brisket that day. Bodacious changed his world. He said that he had been to Carter's for the last time and that Bodacious was the best BBQ he had ever had. He called his wife on the way back to the office to share his experience. Then back at the office, he told anyone who would listen. Nobody there knew what they had right in their back yard. This place has BBQ as good as you will find in Austin. Trust me, I've eaten at most of them. So, if you are ever in Longview, there is only one place that you need to look for, and that is Bodacious BBQ, but only the location on Mobberly. They are a chain, but independently owned, so each location is different. read more

I almost hate to leave a positive review of a restaurant that is already so highly rated, but I can't help it in this case. Longview is home to the flagship Bodacious and is reputed to be better than those in lesser locations. The brisket and pulled pork are so moist and luxurious that you barely need teeth to eat them. If the cheesy creamed corn happens to be on the menu be sure to try it--you won't know what to do with yourself afterwards. The smoked sausage was also good but not class leading, in my opinion. All the food tasted powerfully homemade. The Community iced tea was way too sweet--wish that were homemade, too. We went there around noon; I hear that they have been known to run out of product well before closing time, so be aware. read more

I have eaten at a lot of BBQ places and am always searching for great Q. This place has to be considered as the all around top BBQ joint I have ever visited. The brisket, ribs and sausage were great, but not the absolute best I have tasted, but they were really close. The turkey and the pork belly burnt ends were awesome. The best I have ever had. To get all of this Q to be as great as it was, is incredible. There wasn't a single thing that wasn't great. Even the sweet tea was exceptional. Just an fyi: We arrived at 10:50 and were probably 8th in line and the line was never incredibly long. Nothing like Franklin BBQ in Austin. The line did move incredibly slow, so if you only have an hour for lunch, you can just about forget about it. I am still amazed the line wasn't longer than it was. But Mobberly Bodacious is far superior and has a completely different menu. Simply put, this is the best BBQ restaurant in Longview and possible East Texas. There are some wonderful places in the Great State of Texas for Brisket but the Mobberly Bodacious has to rank in the top 4 for the State in my personal ranking! The Smoke and Love is sliced into every divine morsel! Sauces have character that mix well with the charred bark. I am taking a two pound sample home! Stopped by for some carryout on my way from Baton Rouge to Dallas. Had a fatty brisket sandwich, Mel-man, a variety of sausages, and potato salad. My favorites were the brisket and the jalapeño cheddar sausage. Didn't really care for the sauce, and the potato salad, although it pains me to say it, seemed to be the "loaded potato" salad from Sysco that I've seen many Louisiana bbq joints use.
