Full disclosure. This is not some fancy bbq place. This is a humble building with a sweet couple that run it. Just so you know what to expect. We stopped by on a whim based on a Facebook post. It's a very small older dusty building with limited seating and no restroom. They do not take cards. You have to pay cash or Zelle. They will sell out and close without notice. But we lucked out. We didn't know that most people call ahead and preferably a day or two ahead. We did have to wait about 45 minutes for our food. We were glad they hadn't already sold out. But it was quite the foodventure. Based on the aforementioned Facebook post, I ordered the Mr Big loaded baked potato. It has ham and brisket, cheese, sour cream, and bbq sauce. It came in an open faced to go container because there was no way it was closing. I had to dig down through several inches of meat just to reach the actual potato. I had to give some to my husband just to be able to close it to take home. Then I had to ask for a piece of tape. Well worth the price. My husband got the strawberry lemonade. Too sweet for me. He liked it. But it is served in a large mason jar which you get to keep. It had real strawberries in it. She even came and refilled it when it was about half gone. He got the mix plate. You can choose one or two or three meats. He got brisket and hot links. Large portions of meat. You don't get to choose the sides. You get potato salad and baked beans. He was very pleased with the amount of food. If you come expecting too much as far as atmosphere you might be disappointed. This restaurant is a hidden gem! In fact, if you don't slow down as you approach the business, you'll miss it and have to drive a ways down the road to turn around. Don't be afraid of the outside appearance of this business, it's truely serves up the one of the best Texas style barbecues! After welcoming you to her restaurant, she will inform you first off that they take cash only for payment and one other type of electronic payment, maybe Zelle? This establishment offers the typical meat barbecue selection, pork ribs, brisket, sliced or chopped, chicken and hot links. These protiens are offered in 2 or 3 meat "plates" with 2 sides and white bread. The sides offered on the day we visited were a creamy macaroni salad, and barbecue baked beans. We both ordered the 2 meat plates. My husband ordered double ribs with beans and macaroni salad. I ordered ribs and sliced brisket with double macaroni salad. The ribs were tender, and juicy. The rub gave the ribs a great flavor. The brisket was so tender and juicy. The brisket had a nice smoke ring. The barbecue sauce complemented both meats and was not overpowering. The creamy macaroni salad tasted just like my mother-in law's recipe. The barbecue bake beans were good. On the day we ate there, they offered moonshine sweet tea, moonshine lemonade, a few canned soft drinks and bottled water. We ordered the sweet tea and lemonade. They both were served in quart size mason jars, which served as our "to-go" cups. Both drinks were sweet with a unique after taste, the tea more than the lemonade. Both drinks were good. We ate inside but you also eat on the front porch or get plates to go. While we were there, Kelly was constantly taking phone orders. She said people call in orders early in the day and then pick them up later in the day. They are only open Thursday through Sunday, 11 am until they sell out. Off the beaten bath, Hickory Hill Barbeque is a bit of a challenge to find. The challenge was so worth it. The food was amazing. We got here somewhat late for lunch, and the items left were limited. The brisket was tender and flavorful. The sausage was delicious. The baked beans and potato salad were almost as good as my mom's. The owner was friendly and really fun to talk to. We stop here every time we take our son to college in north Louisiana. Hickory Hill is just outside of Tyler. And has awesome BBQ, ribs are perfect, brisket is perfect, sides are perfect. We've tried lots and lots of BBQ and I even have my own smoker... and i can only aspire to get it just right EVERY TIME like these guys do. Tiny dining room in the front room, but there's a back room for more guests, as well as patio seating out front (dog friendly!). The chicken was cooked to perfection and fell off the bone. The hot links were flavorful and juicy. They didn't taste like they had any fillers at all! The ribs were perfect. The husband and wife owners, Kerry and Kelly, are unbelievably kind and welcoming, and it is clear they love their craft. Not only do they love their work, they have perfected it. Kelly's "sparkling sides," potato salad and beans, are among the best I've had. Kerry is a grand champion pit master, and it shows. His brisket is smoked at low temperatures (below 175 degrees) for a stunning 31 hours! It pays off, because it melts in your mouth. Sweet mother of God, have I found the ambrosia of Texas BBQ..... I was headed West on highway 31 and I had passed this place numerous times and thought, "Why the hell not?" So pulled in and I was the only soul there. I walked in and was greeted very warmly by the Lady of the house. I asked if they had a menu and was shown where I could find one..... Then it hit me....Shit, I only had $5 in cash on me and my debit card and I had a strange feeling that they were not keen on plastic, except for their To Go cutlery. I asked them if they accepted card or cash and was let down when they said cash. I hung my head in disappointment and told them that I only had a 5 on me at the time and I did not think I could get anything on the menu. The Gentleman of the house standing behind the counter stated that it was not a problem at all and that he would hook me up for a 5. I was very surprised and thanked them profusely and they told me not to worry about it. THIS is Texas and Southern hospitality at it's finest. He asked what I wanted and I told him to surprise me because I just wanted to taste what they had. Around 5 minutes later I was handed a To Go box that weighed around 4 pounds..... Totally not expecting that, what so ever. These people were the tits. They were kind and truly a treat to be around. I did not get their names but I will when I go back. I took my haul back to the house and instantly fell in love. Holy shit... I was born and raised in Texas and this, THIS was hands down the best BBQ that has ever graced my palate. The Gentleman hooked me up with 4 ribs, 2 slices of brisket, baked beans that were straight out of a Texas fairy tale and some of the best damn tater salad I have ever had the pleasure of meeting.
