Small but clean restaurant. Ordered brisket plate with Mac and cheese and beans. Brisket soft feel in mouth, but alittle to much fat and hard edges. Mac and cheese very very small "cup" as with beans. Avg Mac and cheese , beans average as well. Cost $17.00 I can think of a lot better bbq in Texas for that cost. Took a mini road trip with the hubs to another BBQ spot, but they sold out right before we got there. So back to Yelp we went, which led us to this little hole in the wall with some awesome bbq! I had a chopped beef (brisket) sandwich platter with baked potato salad and beans. Super moist meat with a touch of fat, served with warm barbecue sauce...yummm. Definitely enjoyed my food!! Hubs loved his turkey sandwich platter with potato salad and beans as well! We love Boxcar and will most certainly be back! read more

The hubs and I were in Longview to visit a friend in Rehab. Thought we'd stop to grab a bite for lunch before heading home (an hour or so south). He wanted to try this place. It's one of the few local places we haven't tried yet. Service was very friendly and prompt. Tea was excellent, not that weak watery crap you get some places. I got the two meat plate with brisket and ribs, with potato salad and mac-n-cheese. He got the two meat plate with sausage and brisket, with beans and potato salad. We both had tea. The bill was over $43.00 and we left an additional tip. The brisket was tender, but they left that heavy fat strip on it, which was part of the "weight" we were charged for. The flavor was decent, but not very smoked. Their bbq sauce is excellent. The ribs also had decent flavor, but parts were very dry and over cooked (unedible). His sausage was okay. The sides were very small, for the price. Overall, wasn't the worst we've ever had, but a far cry from some of the great places we've enjoyed. I don't mind paying good money for good food and adequate portions, but today's meal was sub par. read more

I was expecting great bbq going in, but this is phenomenal! I don't really think turkey when I think bbq, but this is maybe the best turkey I've ever had. Ever. The brisket is excellent also; it stands up to most of the other great bbq briskets out there. The coleslaw has subtle classic sweetness thats actually better than any relative tried to make. And the beans have the slightest kick behind a richness I don't even know how to recreate. This is just a great lil bbq place! read more

Best brisket and sauce anywhere in the area. My wife and I go there a lot to get brisket to go. It's delicious. If there is one area they could improve on, it would be their sides, but I would say the same about most of the places in Texas, their sides fall well short of what is good. Fix that and they'd have people lined up to get in. read more

Hands down best BBQ in town. I don't write reviews often, and I eat BBQ rarely because I'm supposed to be a vegetarian. But I went in Box Car BBQ for the first time because I saw several very snazzy corvettes parked outside. It turned out to be a club, not a show, but I took the opportunity to look around and try some offerings. First, the parking is convenient. There is a light on the corner so getting back out is easy, too. Second, the restaurant is bigger than it looks. Wander around (as I did) and you will find a lounge with a pool table in back. Third, the restaurant is nice. Everything is clean and easy to find. Fill your own drinks so they don't just sit and get watery. There is a really cool utensil dispenser that I'd like to have at home or anywhere else where I might need a utensil. All of the usual condemns are available and kept clean and ready. I like the fact that the meat is cut to order right behind the counter, by the owner. Everyone in the restaurant is friendly. Fourth, the portions are generous. I am stuck on the smoked turkey. It isn't just smokey, it is well seasoned and fall apart tender. Really delicious. I've also had the chopped beef, smoked sausage and boudin. All were delicious. The sauce is just perfect. Beans and Cole slaw are awesome and fresh. When you order a sandwich, the bread is crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, and buttery. Yum. BBQ opinions can differ, but Bodacious is a gold standard to me. If you like Bodacious, you'll like this better. Platinum standard. read more

Much less on the map than it's Bodacious counter part, Box Car has some solid BBQ. The employees and chef were very cordial and cut up the food right in front of me. I had the BBQ plate with sausage, brisket, and Turkey. Of the the three, I would say the turkey was actually the best. Personally I thought the brisket was a touch dry. But the delicious BBQ sauce made up for it when you dipped the brisket into that. Sausage was real good too I thought. The sides of potato salad, beans, and cole slaw were nothing special.
