We live in East Texas, where there are plenty of restaurants to choose from, and we've eaten at most of the local spots and many in the surrounding towns. My husband challenged me to find somewhere new, and Yelp led us to Fat Boyzzz in Longview, TX. I'll be honest--I'm not usually a soul food fan, so I wasn't especially excited about trying it. But my husband had been craving some good soul food for a while, so we decided to give it a shot. The restaurant had excellent ratings and reviews, but I was still a little skeptical. When we arrived, the place was packed, which is usually a good sign. Thankfully, we were seated right away. Our waitress let us know upfront that there would be about a 30-minute wait for the food. Our first interaction with her was a little rough--she seemed stressed and was somewhat abrupt while taking our order. My husband was initially put off, but he was determined to get his soul food fix. Now, whenever I see grilled liver and onions with brown gravy on a menu, that's what I'm ordering. I'm a Luby's girl through and through, and until today, I would've said nobody does liver and onions better than Luby's. Fat Boyzzz changed my mind. The liver was sliced a little thinner and wasn't quite as tender, but the flavor more than made up for it. Every bite was absolutely delicious. And that's not even the best part. The mashed potatoes and brown gravy were phenomenal--rich, flavorful, and pure comfort food. My husband ordered the fried pork chops with mashed potatoes and cream gravy. The entire meal, all he could talk about was those mashed potatoes. Between bites, he'd keep saying, "These mashed potatoes are AWESOME! This gravy tastes just like my Naw-Naw's gravy!" My husband is a big, burly guy with a deep voice, and hearing him repeatedly praise the food while happily devouring his plate was entertaining all by itself. This was truly food for the soul. We left full, happy, and completely comforted by a fantastic meal. Fat Boyzzz has definitely earned repeat customers in us, and we'll absolutely be back. Highly recommended! read more

We were passing through and found this gem! You feel Like you're walking in somebody's momma's house who is getting down in the kitchen! The smothered pork chops literally fell off the bone. The friend chicken was so crispy and flavorful and the sides were AMAZING! The mac and cheese was definitely made with a roux, the potato casserole was heavenly, the candied yams were not overly sweet, and the cabbage was my favorite! I was pleasantly surprised to learn that all plates come with cornbread and dressing, which were divine! The restaurant was very clean. It's set up cafeteria style. There was a long line, but the staff runs an assembly line like a well oiled machine. You will not be waiting long and you'll absolutely understand why there is a line when you taste the food. We have been here twice now and I can't say enough about it. It is a very simple, unassuming diner, which I enjoy. The staff is friendly, helpful and caring. And the food......oh my!!! It was fresh and so flavorful both times we have been there, and has a home-cooked feel to it. I can tell the chef is a real pro! We've had catfish, shrimp, chicken fried steak and burgers, all phenomenal every time. Also, the price is very reasonable. Did you want to get your Fat Boy on? Well, this is the place to do it. So my dad had been eyeing this place for a while now, but because they're not open as much as a conventional restaurant, we hadn't made it in for lunch until now. Oh, my goodness! Everything on the plate was delicious. Chicken fried steak was meaty and crispy, and stood up to their house made cream gravy, which was a star in its own right. You could taste the butter in the cornbread within the first bite. I said to Dad, "You better try that cornbread," and he promptly gave a side-eye to the ladies as if to say, "Don't be plying with me now!!" Potatoes and green beans were great as well. Tea was strong like we like. I would recommend that they add a little less sugar to the sweet tea. But everything else was great. The staff was so friendly. If you're looking for the definition of Southern hospitality, they have it in spades. They were playing Elvis tunes for the music, and you can't get any more southern than that. Drove all the way from Tyler, Texas to be very dissatisfieD, ordered a meatloaf plate & oxtails. Seems like the oxtails were rewarmed from a previous day, very tough and gellie, juices running over into the dressing, very sloppily prepared, small portioned sides, for the price amount, tasted like chick-fila Mac and cheese. CanNed glory-Greens, could have least put some jalapeños in for seasoning. To be black-owned tasted no seasonings. also noted the banana pudding was 6.99 and it was a 2oz serving. pudding consistancy was very dark. So sorry Fatboyzz, not this time. read more

My parents just moved to Longview and we were hoping this would be our go-to soul food spot. Unfortunately, our second experience was worse than the first. I placed a takeout order by phone and the person who answered sounded annoyed from the start--assuming I knew which dishes were only available on certain days and getting frustrated when I asked simple questions. When I arrived, the young woman at pickup was not thrilled when I asked if I could get a full portion of a side or switch it to something else. We'd ordered cornbread, but were told at pickup they were out and we had to switch to dinner rolls. I saw only one roll going into the order, asked if the others were already bagged, and was met with more frustration and a "they're in there." When I got home, one meal was missing its roll entirely. The food was okay--not as good as our first visit--but the customer service and order accuracy really missed the mark. Constructive feedback: clearer communication about daily item availability, kinder phone etiquette, willingness to help with simple substitutions, and a final bag check before handing orders to customers would make a big difference. This place is the real deal, y'all. They have a line for their specials (all looked wonderful) but you can also get other stuff by ordering. I got the cheeseburger (sourdough bun). This is a crazy bold statement, but I do believe this was the best cheeseburger I've had in my life. Cooked to order, you taste the hand shaped patty, perfectly seasoned, fresh vegetables, and it came out crazy hot and right off the grill. Excellenté!! My wife got the chicken fried chicken with white gravy. It was tender, juicy, perfectly seasoned, also hot and the gravy was better than Grandma's. The mixed vegetables and the mashed potatoes were also seasoned wonderfully and all delivered hot. The whole team works together to MAKE SURE you are taken care of. My husband has a high school friend who'd always post pictures on Facebook of the food at Fat Boyzzz. We always said, gosh, that looks good, we ought to try it! Alas, that was no easy task, as Fat Boyzzz is in east Texas and we live hours away, in southeastern Louisiana. But today, the stars finally aligned, and we happened to find ourselves in Longview, at lunchtime. And we said, we gotta go. So we did. And we are SO GLAD we did! I got the hamburger steak with rice and gravy, green beans, mac and cheese, and cornbread. My husband got the fried pork chops with rice and white gravy and cabbage. My older son got the shrimp poboy with fries. My younger son got the chicken fried steak with mac and cheese and fries. That hamburger steak was half a pound if it was an ounce, and wonderfully seasoned. (Sadly my photo of the hamburger steak didn't actually take.) The mac and cheese was good, but on my plate, the green beans and the rice and gravy were the stars of the sides. I don't know what they put in the green beans, but they were DELICIOUS. The gravy was flavorful and just thick enough. The crust on the fried pork chops was superb, and the cabbage was quite good. And that chicken fried steak. FANTASTIC!!!! We all had to share bites, and my husband said that was the best chicken fried steak he's had in decades. It was hand battered and well seasoned and as big as my head. The fries were a delightful surprise. They look to be cut on a rotary cutter, and according to the sign in the restaurant, they're lightly battered with a batter that uses Bent Arm Ale. They were not your average fries! And the even bigger surprise was the birthday song! When we came in, one of the staff mentioned that she'd change the music, that it was still on birthday party music from a party a few days earlier. My husband said, "Oh, that's fine, today is my birthday!" And we went on. As we were finishing our meal, someone who must have been the Miss Jean I see mentioned in so many reviews brought him a piece of cake and sang a gospel/bluesy rendition of Happy Birthday to him (and she can sing!!!). That was a fun touch, and most unexpected! The cake was a super tasty pound cake, and it was big enough for all of us to share. Fat Boyzzz is right off of I-20, on the north access road at I-20 and Estes Parkway in Longview. Had we just been driving by and seen it, we might not have stopped. On the outside, it looks a little divey. But let me tell you, looks can be deceiving. Inside, it's clean, the staff is friendly and courteous, and the food is good ol' Southern and soul food, home cooking. As good as my mama used to make, and she was a mighty fine cook. It's been a little while since I've been to Fat Boyzzz, but I've NOT forgotten it. I was working a travel assignment at a local hospital and did a search for the best burger in Longview, and this was top of the list. I stopped in expecting to eat a big juicy burger until I saw the hot counter. I ordered smothered chops over rice, greens, and okra and tomatoes. I felt like I was eating at my mom's house again. I thoroughly got my socks blown right off. The staff was so nice...like family even. The fried chicken was the next thing I ordered and brought it home for dinner that night. The dressing that came with it was great, especially with the cranberry sauce. The fried cornbread was amazing. The atmosphere was warm and everyone was so friendly. This is one of those local gems of a restaurant where the chicken fried chicken and green beans with mashed potatoes and gravy are served with cornbread, and you just can't eat it all even though you really, really want to. On a Sunday they had a buffet where you could choose a meat and two sides and got dressing and gravy as a bonus (maybe a thanksgiving thing?). All the sides were good too and all the people running the restaurant were friendly and helpful even though it was busy. Service was extra friendly, as always. While some patrons did not wear masks when entering, all staff members did, and, even better, they wore them properly. They have take-out, buffet (they serve you), and table service. There were only a few tables occupied between 11:15 and 11:45 when we were there, but they had a number of take-out orders. Tables are spaced out, and disposable plates, flatware, salt and pepper, etc. were used.
