It was okay. The furnishings are nice, sea bass was okay, potatoes were watery, and Brussels sprouts were good. But my plate was more than $40 for just "okay" food. My husband's steak with chimichurri was really yummy, though, and he enjoyed his sauvignon blanc with jalapeños. It is in cute, Downtown Marshall & is attached to a mercantile. The restaurant is just a narrow section (a bar, long row of tables, & long row of half bench seat/ half chair tables), divided from the mercantile by just a wall but open to the mercantile in the front and back. (So kinda like a fancier Cracker Barrel but with things in the mercantile that we were not interested in looking at. Nothing in it grabbed our attention.) I really wanted to like this place and expected it to be fancier than it was. So I think my expectations were too high from the jump. Maybe we will try it again some time and I'll dress more casually and order something different...and have more realistic expectations. read more

Love this new fine dining option in my hometown of Marshall, Texas. I got to enjoy a ladies' lunch with my mom here at High Horse this afternoon after a stroll around the Mercantile to see what goodies they had in store. Lots to choose from at all price points. Mama enjoyed the "Whoa Nellie" - turkey salad on croissant - and I've been craving a wedge salad and theirs definitely hit the spot. We finished off our meal by splitting the peach cobbler that was incredible- warm and delicious with a dollop of ice cream. We loved the artwork and their service staff was attentive and helpful. Located inside Marshall Mercantile, High Horse is a full service restaurant that brings a western spin to its menu. The building's interior is fully restored and updated, turning a portion of the historic Joe Weisman building into one of Marshall's nicest eateries. We started off with the Cast Iron Cornbread ($12.75). The jalapeños added a nice kick, but we craved for more butter on top. The hamburger ($9.75) was top notch, perfectly cooked and seasoned. The BLT ($13.75) was delicious, especially with locally-sourced Bear Creek Smokehouse peppered bacon. The big disappointment were the House Fries ($4). They just seemed too ambitious: thick, cut planks of potato, battered in a slurry, and lightly fried. They were neither crispy nor fluffy. Stopped in for a pre dinner cocktail. WELL worth the stop Zayin mixes a mean drink. She and Remi took great care of us. Plan to return to try the food another night. And definitely get another drink from Zayin. Try her French 76 with lavender. Amazing! read more

My husband and I went for date night on Saturday at 5:30. It was our first visit. The food was good but portions were small. We had fried green tomatoes as an appetizer and I was pleased. I had the pistachio crusted salmon for dinner and it had a nice flavor. My husband had the chicken fried sirloin. He liked it but was a little disappointed with how small it was. Our waitress was very friendly and attentive. The atmosphere definitely has potential. Our only takeaway is that our table was close to the bar, which is normally fine, but there were several very loud people just gathered around the bar. They were yelling and carrying on the whole time. That was just not what we expected. We live in Texarkana so I'm not sure if we'll make a trip back. It's definitely worth a try if you're in the area. read more

Went for the first time today. The staff and service was great and the food was as well. The decor and the fact that it's in a mercantile really was nice. You can't get a great meal, shop, and get an over the top milkshake all under one roof. read more

Ridiculously expensive for what you get. The changes to the building are not to my liking. Service was ok.

We called our order in 45 minutes in advance because we were traveling through onto Houston. They got the timing just right and the food was excellent! The service was excellent as well. read more

The atmosphere is really nice and the staff seem very friendly but I waited over an hour for a turkey avocado sandwich. I ended up having to walk out to get back to work. The tables around me had been waiting around the same time if not longer. Don't go here unless you're willing to wait a while. read more
