Let me start off by saying that my entire life I have hated cake. Never understood its appeal and have been turning down cake at birthday parties my entire life. When it came time to find a cake for our wedding, I left that up to my (then future) husband. All I cared about was that it was reasonably priced, would fit in with our vintage decor and that whoever we ordered from would work with us well. A few months before our wedding, when we found out my husband was being moved to Texas for his job (leaving me to handle most of the wedding planning without him) I knew I needed his cake opinion. We scheduled several tastings in the area within a week, Bocakes included. When we showed up for our after-hours tasting that Kathy was kind enough to schedule for us on such short notice, the storefront was closed! I saw someone was in the back baking and knocked anyways - Kathy answered and it took a bit of scratching our heads before we realized I had mixed up two appointments and our tasting wasn't until tomorrow. She was instantly understanding and invited us in anyways. She whipped us up some samples right there and for the first time in my twenty five years I tasted cake I not only liked but LOVED. We immediately decided to go with her not even needing to taste other places in the area (which we did anyways and every tasting just confirmed our decision). Everyone thought we were crazy because we picked an odd flavor - blood orange with passion fruit filling. That is, until they tasted this amazing creation. Right off the bat we were so impressed with our experience at Bocakes. Kathy, the owner, facilitated our tasting back in December for our March wedding and put on quite the spread! I was shocked at the number of cakes and fillings she made available to us, not only for the tasting but also the cake itself! She encouraged us to be creative, and offered basically every layer of the cake to be a different flavor with unique fillings in between each. I loved that because we ended up with such a unique selection of flavor pairings for each tier. She also did a great job of explaining the cake serving breakdown (i.e. how many guests = how many tiers, accounting for the fact that not everyone would likely eat cake). A good thing to note is that she only works with buttercream (no fondant, which was A-OK with me!) but still can create beautiful designs and pretty much create anything a couple requests. As we neared the wedding I was struggling to figure out favors for guests (I couldn't bear the idea of spending a fortune on a shot glass or other tchotchke that people would end up leaving or tossing) so I figured maybe food/cupcakes would be the way to go. Kathy gave us an excellent quote for boxes of mini-cupcakes (again offering a variety of flavor combos!) and provided the cutest little packages with personalized labels we created. All in all Kathy was professional, responsive, and wonderfully affordable! BoCakes When I booked my wedding venue in Temecula Wine Country I was given a vendor list of the "Most Popular" Bakery's, Florists, and DJ's. I trusted my wedding coordinator and she circled the three that she really felt were the best given her experience with them and the venue, as well as the frequency that she dealt with the vendors. My wedding was to be very intimate with only our closest family and friends. A total of 40 guests. I called my florist choice first and she gave me a recommendation of BO Cakes the owners name is Cathy and my florist vendor spoke highly of her and her name was also on the list of vendors provided to me by my wedding coordinator. I did some research and she came highly recommended. When my fiancé and I called to schedule our cake tasting, Cathy was very kind and very sweet over the phone. She was very accommodating and she worked with our busy schedule. When we arrived at the cake tasting, Cathy had everything set up so beautifully. She explained how it all worked, my fiancé and I had a plate of different flavored cupcakes approximately 7 flavors. In the middle of the table there was a round spinning plate with over 10 different fillings to pair with the flavored cupcakes. Cathy left us to play with all the flavors and build our own wedding cake. She came back and we told her what we wanted and she helped us put it all together. The price was very reasonable and overall it was a quick and SWEET experience. The day of the wedding the cake was delivered by Cathy and decorated by Cathy with the flowers that my florist had provided for her. The decorated cake was exactly what we envisioned. The day after the wedding, I called all my vendors to thank them and give them feedback. My only criticism of the cake was that I tasted it and it seemed a bit "dry". Cathy was very apologetic and she offered to give me half of my money back. She was absolutely sincere in her apology and was so sorry that the cake was not to her standard. She offered several times to refund me half of my money but I declined, the cake was beautiful and it tasted good, I was probably being overly critical and it was a bit dry for my liking. Regardless, I was so impressed with her work, customer service and sincere apology that I would absolutely recommend her to anyone and everyone for any occasion. Meaning, you can choose a different layer, filling, etc. for every single tier of your cake. This is awesome, if you have some people with nut allergies, but you also know that half your family love praline/pecan's, etc. For the cake tasting, you get to try every cake flavor, every filling available, and can mix and match however you please! We thought we would be somewhat limited to choosing from staple options (as most bakeries have), but not with BoCAkes, Our wedding cake was a completely custom cake, which we loved, and so did our guests! We chose to do our top and bottom tier the same (a mixture of red velvet, marble, etc.) and the middle tier included praline filling and some other cake layers for those who were not chocolate/red velvet fans, etc. The cake was amazing - and every single piece was eaten! The owner told us that for our 1 year anniversary, we can come back and get the "cake topper" made fresh, instead of saving ours and putting it in the freezer for one whole year (using space, getting freezer burn, etc.) How awesome is that? Kathy emailed me asking to give her a call to discuss the cake details and dates. We ended the phone call with her asking me to email her photos of cakes I like so she could have a better idea of what I wanted. Kathy and I had an appointment earlier this month for a cake tasting due tot the fact that I could only come on a weekend date, we had planned the cake tasting a month out. The day before our cake tasting appointment I received a text from my sister, she was having her baby! How exciting, but oh no I had to cancel a same day hair appointment and the next day cake tasting as well. My hairstylist was so accommodating, her appointment was the same day we were leaving to drive up to SF to see my sister and hopefully get there before she had the baby. I left Kathy a voicemail about cancelling the appointment for the next day since her phone lines were down (as she had stated in a four page text!) Yes, four pages of text, one sentence to congratulate me (as I am driving to SF) and the rest of the four page text to tell me I could not reschedule because she was going to give my date away. So what is that you needed, money? I would have been happy to give you money, sign a contract, if you were holding my date and someone else really wanted it why wouldn't you offer me the opportunity to hold the date? Needless to say, the situation really upset me. I couldn't believe that someone would take a moment like this and turn it into something negative. My sister was having her first baby, and I'm glad I cancelled, and I'm glad that I went to go see her. I don't care to be treated so inhumanely, do you not have any empathy? I treat everyone the way I want to be treated, and I would suggest you do the same. You see, one day you will be in the same predicament. read more

Okay, so to start, the cakes and the desserts will knock your socks off. I swear Kathy keeps a jar of pixie dust in her kitchen, because there's something magical about the flavors here. Kathy is very much so the 'get it done' type, and boy does she. Everything you want, just as you want it, when you want it. She even went WAY out of her way (all the way to Julian) to deliver our wedding cake for us. That's incredible, as it's about an hour and a half drive. There are a lot of comments about her personality too... she's an introverted, quiet woman, but she is kind and extremely accommodating in her service.
