I'm actually a little shocked right now. I just realized that I've never reviewed Boba loka before! I used to come here ALL the time, so I guess that was before I became a Yelp Elite. I came here so often that it wouldn't be an exaggeration to say I practically studied here almost every day. It's such a great place to get some studying done, with plenty of comfortable seating, lots of outlets, delicious Korean food, and bingsu!!! To be completely honest, I'm not a big fan of the coffee here, so I don't usually order it. But the bingsu is really good, and they have my beloved Korean fish-shaped pastries, bungeoppang! So, regardless of the coffee, I absolutely love this place. For me, having a comfortable place to sit and access to outlets is really important when I visit a coffee shop, and this place checks both boxes. The staff are mostly young students. They're not overly friendly, but they're not unpleasant either. Just the right amount of friendliness, which I appreciate. This time, I wasn't here to study. It was an incredibly hot day, and my friend and I were craving bingsu, so we stopped by. We ended up sitting in front of their new, huge screen, and WOW....... it was SO nice! It almost felt like we had come to a concert. We enjoyed the music and the big screen while hanging out. Then some students came in and sat at the table directly in front of the screen, so our little private concert was over. But we still had a great time! My 15 year old daughter and her friends went to this place supposedly to meet up, hang out, work on a project, while enjoying shaved ice to buy. The staff that was there told them that they all have to order individual items if they want to stay inside and hang out, and so they did. While they took out their poster that they were going to work on, the worker told them "this is not a craft store, it's a cafe!" She told the girls to put away their stuff. Why would you do this? Is it because they are teens? They are good and nice kids. The service was so poor. Boba drink did not even taste good! To management: this is a way to lose customers. What a horrible place! I used to go here a lot when I was younger for their milk teas and slushees but it's been a while since then. I was in the area so I got their regular milk tea again and it kinda tasted the same(aftertaste left my mouth dry). The service was simple, it gave me a neutral feel. Only thing that changed was some of the interior decoration and prices. It used to be $4-5 for a regular with no toppings and I got mine with no ice/no toppings and it was almost $7. Also it seemed like my drink was premade compared to making it fresh, it came out in a couple seconds. I'd rather go to another spot that makes it fresh/cheaper but that's just me. My elderly mom wanted a Lychee and Passion Fruit mix which the owner accommodated as she was coming from the hospital. In the morning, service was quick and I waited less than 3 minutes. Boba Loca is a cute cafe in La Palma that just feels like home! The mixed furniture and kinda random wall decor (BTS tees?!) just feels so endearing to me haha. We had some Shin Ramyeon from those machines that you would see in Korean convenience stores and it just hit different! Today's experience was truly disappointing. While I've had positive visits here before, the service during the evening shift left much to be desired. Upon ordering I was told that I could only order 2 or 5 taiyaki, whereas previously I had been able to order just one. Understanding that policies can change I didn't mind. The cashier's demeanor already seemed off though I empathize that everyone has their bad days. My buzzer rings and I go and grab the food. The cashier is nowhere to be found and there's only one box sitting there and we're the only ones with the loud ringing buzzer so naturally I grab it. We open it to find 3 inside. I was talking pretty obnoxiously about how I was always able to order 1 with my friends so I thought he put another in there as an apology. Apology accepted I thought. My friends and I bite into it only to find out we were given the wrong order, they were all the wrong flavors. Leading me to believe he gave others (family in front of us) the chance to order 3 taiyaki but not us. My friends dragged me out before I exploded lol. It's disheartening when service falls short of expectations and promises are not upheld. It's kind of a weird layout while walking in, almost like a restaurant converted into a boba joint. It's also quiet in there so I guess it's a good place for studying or working. The fish taiyaki was really good and chewy; I got it filled with Nutella. The other option was red bean. Their milk tea with boba was mediocre. The boba is hard in the middle. The owners are greedy and huge micromanagers. They don't even allow you to bring your own water bottles in and will actively yell at you within 5 minutes of sitting in. As a local of La Palma who lives only across the street from this place, I have to say that this place is a charming small boba joint that I enjoy frequenting time to time. The flavor drinks are good and the boba is chewy and plentiful. They've recently renovated the counter top and I think the lighting and it's even more of a hip spot with pretty good boba / flavors they have to offer. Not even a few minutes after sitting and settling down, one of the older ladies working came up asking me if I thought the place was a library? While I do not mind their policy I refuse to give business to someone who refuses to give basic time and respect to a customer. They have great basics and different types of servings, like milk teas, frappes, slushies and smoothies. I came recently and noticed they updated the menu and the space. It's a popular local spot for students, friends and family who hang out after dinner. The space is big and good for groups.
