Store selection isn't the best (for some reason stocks of metallic paints are usually out), but the staff is Amazing! In particular, Melissa (no relation) has advised me on what types of paint to use based on their relative consistencies and costs. She's also showed me how to prime a piece of wood for painting, and told me about the binding agents in tempera vs acrylic. Maybe all this is old hat to most people, but it was really helpful for me. The other clerks have been helpful as well and gave great suggestions on products if you're not exactly sure what you're looking for. Excellent supply of many, many things artists who are not painters or illustrators need. (suck it, Utrecht) was able to find everything I needed and more! Highly recommended. Only the manager seemed to know much about the inventory, so I think they are just hiring normal retail joes to work there, not people you can ask about etching resists and expect any kind of knowledgeable help. Great store, lots of products for artists and craftspeople. My 3 star review is specifically about the framing department. I had two 11x14 mats cut. Be warned, they cut the mat openings larger than the measurement. One of my mats was cut very incorrectly, over and inch less width than what was ordered. The other mat opening was a bit larger than specified, but I was able to make it work. The mat that was cut wrong was more critical in the measurements. They were willing to recut it, and I discussed the problem with the opening being too large, but they refused to cut it different to the original request. The result was that I had to go to their store 3 times and one mat was unusable because the opening was too large. And the woman was snippy about it. They charged $52.00 for two 11x14 mats. And one is useless. I wasn't trying to get over on anyone. Measurements in artwork are critical, and I expected the mats to be cut accurately in the first place. read more

I'm so jealous of the students at Seattle Central Community College!! They get an amazing, fully stocked, reasonably priced art supplies store right across the street!! Although UW has it's bookstore, the prices are really odd down there. One thing can be cheap and another thing can be grossly inflated. Really annoying if you want to get several things at once. Anyway, I popped in because I was a little lost on my way to Perkin's Glass (which is on the same road, just stay on the Blick side and go opposite of the college) and wanted directions. I was rushing to turn in some paperwork at Seattle Central, and was planning on walking to Utrecht after-wards, so discovering Blick's was just across the street was awesome. I went in and spun the wheel and got a free sketchbook. Also, I signed up for their 20% off discount card since it's free until May 2! I really like that the store is brightly lit and well-organized, and reasonably priced. It's really easy to navigate, which is a huge plus. All the employees were really busy with the "grand opening" so I didn't get to ask for help. But I found what I needed--And it was out of stock. But I got a couple of brushes on sale :) There's also some cute "gift" type retail items, similar to what they have at the UW bookstore. They have a good selection of supplies and I would have loved to peruse. But I had to book it to Utrecht for those out of stock Winson gouache I needed before my parking ran out. The cashier was very friendly and pleasant (although its a new store, I give it a bit before the employees start hating their job). Oh and as for the male reviewer who was upset that they asked him to check his bag: GET OVER IT! Pretty comprehensive selection. Prices are a little high, but not significantly different from most art supply stores. Staff is a gamble - some helpful and knowledgeable, some not. There's usually just a couple employees so you'll wait in line a bit. its a minimum wage gig, so don't be too judgmental. I went inside in April because I saw from a catalog that one was coming and I wanted to check it out. We don't have any HUGE art stores-I mean you can go to Daniel Smith, they are local and good but getting to that area is a real drag,and very far out of my way. This store takes up like half a block which is good. Downside: aisles seem tiny, two people do not fit in one aisle, if there are already people there you better wait. They have my paint way up high-I know Im not tall, but most places have some down lower. Upside-not a craft store but a real store that you can find in NY,Chicago. I like some of their canvases-the ones with the blue labels-blick studio I think, but online is where I would normally shop for certain items. Yeah, I'm so happy to see more places to buy my art and its good if you are a student, then you dont have to walk all the way down to Utrecht, they are fine and all but I dont know which bus to take down there. read more

I am a frequent shopper at the Blick Art Materials on Capitol Hill and I have nothing but great things to say about the customer service that is provided every time I come in to this location. I am always greeted when I arrive at the store and that is a great start to my shopping experience. I have been shopping at this location weekly for a couple of years now and have had nothing but phenomenal experiences every time I come in. Returning an item is usually kind of a long wait which I understand because they are normally busy and everyone is running around but today I had a great return experience. An employee named Karly provided outstanding customer service to me and handled my no receipt return much faster than any of my previous experiences with ease while putting a smile on my face. I had a rough start to my day but because of her unique personality and stunning customer service I left a little happier and remembered why I keep going back. They hire the best employees possible, they allow them to express their individuality, and to tip it all off the managers are more helpful and friendly than any other retail store I've shopped at. I'm not hugely mad or upset with Blick, but only because I'm done with art school and wasn't depending on the supply I just bought.... A few hours ago I bought a technical pen from Blick, a not cheap technical pen. After having the glass case protecting said pen opened for me, I asked whether or not the pen came already filled with ink, or if I would need to buy ink as well, and the person helping me did not know, and that's totally cool, he went to ask Employee X who would know the answer. Employee X came to help me/us and also was not positive about the ink situation, she said she thought that they did not come filled but said employee Y would know for sure, and went to find employee Y to double check. Although all their employees are not completely knowledgeable about everything (and who could ask them to be), I was happy to know they would go around for me and make sure I got the answers I needed. So Employee X comes back from talking to Employee Y and informs me that the pen I want comes 100% full of ink, and that I do not need to buy ink at all. I was happy to save the $5, I bought my pen and went on my way home. Shoot ahead 5 hours, I just opened my pen, and guess what.... NO INK. I am not that upset since my use for said pen is not urgent, but if I really needed this for a project or piece (as I would have when I was in art school 2 years ago) I would have been not only totally PISSED, but also totally screwed. I don't expect employees (especially hourly ones at a chain store) to know everything about everything, but I do expect that if they truly don't know, they will just say so, not send me away with false information that wastes my time. read more

I had the best experience here after picking up supplies for a painting workshop for my husband. He's the painter - I'm not, so I had no idea what I was doing. Cadmium what? I am an illustrator, artist, graphic designer and I use Blick for all my art supply and printing needs. The digital output in the design center (in the back near framing) is superb in their customer service and knowledge of excellent digital printing. Giclee prints come out color correct and on the most beautiful paper. Jeremy and Erin always give me the best advise and customer care. I cannot rave enough about the service I received tonight from Alexandr in the framing department. I needed a mat cut on the quick and arrived less than an hour before closing. I had fully expected to have to place an order and return on a different day to pick it up. However, Alexandr took care of it immediately and I was in an out with a perfectly fitting mat made. I didn't need a frame but the selection for framing options seemed endless. Will absolutely return and recommend to all of my friends. Thanks for the wonderful service!!! It has a great selection but the staff are incompetent and rude. I stood in line for almost 10 minutes. Only one person was checking people out and the other 5 were just standing there behind the counter. One staffer acted like I was putting him out just for asking which isle something was in. I thought this might be an isolated incident but this has happened consistently the multiple times I've been there. It's a shame because I like supporting local businesses but this one I'd rather see shutdown. I'll be moving my business down the street or ordering online from amazon. Avoid this place if you need any help or don't have plenty of time to wait to give them your money. read more

This place is close to me, but I don't think I'll be going here again. I went to get a quote on framing a piece of art work I recently purchased, and all I got was unhelpful attitude. We didn't bring the artwork because it was super rainy and misty out (typical Seattle winter) and we didn't want to risk damaging it. But, we did bring the dimensions of the piece. The framer condescendingly asked us if we knew that we had to bring in the artwork if we wanted it framed. No shit, sherlock, we just wanted a quote. Then, even before discussing what kind of frame/matte/etc. that we wanted, he put his hands up saying that he was extremely uncomfortable giving us a quote without the artwork here. Really?!?! We work in the design trade and we routinely get quotes on multi-million dollar building projects based on a drawing, and you're saying that you can't give us a quote on building a box around a work on paper?! We were dumbfounded and insulted, so we walked to Pike and Broadway to Frame Central and got a quote instead. Amazingly, they were able to visualize and understand that the drawing we wanted to frame was 22"X30"....go figure. read more

Didn't even want to rate them "1" star. I don't know if Wade still works there but he is by FAR THE RUDEST and ELITIST "artist" I have ever encountered in my life. He rolls his eyes, he walks away from you when you ask questions and instead of answering (like any normal human) Wade asks questions that aren't open ended questions to understand your project. So it's not like he is trying to truly help you with your project, rather the questions are just condescending remarks to make sure you know he "knows" more than you. His customer service makes me sick. On one occasion he was too busy on his cell phone talking about music to even bother to acknowledge me, but made it appoint to tell me 6 times the store was closing. At this point didn't offer to help me find last minute items, rather just "You need to pay." I will not shop there anyone. In fact I haven't been there in several months due to that. I spoke to Larry a "manager" about his behavior, and Larry spoke to him at the register about me. He told Wade my complaints and basically babied him through the conversation and eluded to the fact my complaint wasn't valid and I was just probably "having a bad day" REALLY?!?!?! My day turned bad after I was excited to start on a project and had to deal with a rude and condescending attitude for no reason. Also the store never has accurate pricing (which is entrapment) if there is pricing at all and the staff isn't accurately trained to get proper pricing. Also several associates on different occassions stunk of marijuana. The store is always a mess, and they constantaly are talking about secret shoppers and how to "figure out who they are" and leave shopping carts of product blocking ailes. read more
