We bought Arches 300lb watercolor paper online, and when we came in my dad was convinced it was the wrong weight. The associate who helped us (blonde hair, and I really wish I remembered her name) was calm, patient, and genuinely kind the entire time. She didn't turn it into an argument or make anyone feel talked down to. Instead, she immediately offered solutions: replace the paper or give us a refund. They didn't have the exact Arches paper my dad wanted to swap to, and she still went above and beyond by offering to call Blick and initiate an online return for us on the spot. Conveniently located near several parking garages and a couple doughnut shops Blick is everything I wish Michael's would be - fully stocked, lots of choices, and solid prices. Sure, they lean more toward the paper art side such painting, chalk, watercolor, and calligraphy and less on the other art aspects but I am always happy to stop by. Awesome deals on sketching supplies, particularly mixed media notebooks. They tend to not stock more advanced supplies for printmaking: they do have photo emulsion, 110 mesh frames, and a bunch of starter kits. They lack heavy duty supplies for putting up posters: packaging tape dispensers, laminator, staple guns. They do have various kinds of tape though. I was able to find these things nearby at the Hardware Supply store, and ordered a laminator off of Amazon. I also got a piece of glass from a photo frame at the Walgreens across the street. read more

A while back, Blicks and Utrecht art supply merged. This hasn't been a 100 % benefit for the public. At Utrecht, one could buy individual canvas boards at a reasonable price. At Blicks you don't have that option anymore. You have to buy them in bulk. Also at Utrecht you had the option of buying pre-stretched canvases that had either a wrapped edge with the staples in the back, or canvases that had the staples along the side. These latter were less expensive than the wrapped edge canvases. Now, at Blicks, you no longer have the option. You can buy only wrapped edge canvases in store. You might have better luck buying from the online site. A word about all of Blick's SALES. You see splashed across ads and promotions 60% OFF in big bold letters. Then underneath you see in small pale letters 'list price'. Ask any employee and they will admit to you that no Blick's merchandise has ever been sold at 'list price'. LIST PRICE is a phony made-up exaggerated, inflated amount that is never charged. But it appears that you are getting a great deal when you see that you are getting a 60% reduction in price. You are not. Related to that deceptive tactic: Recently, I went into the Blicks on Broadway and saw that one could donate art supplies to Children's Hospital. You purchase crayon sets etc. and they are sent to the hospital. Sounds nice, right? However, the donator pays full retail price for the goods. In other words, Blicks makes a profit on your donation!! What looks like a benevolent gesture on Blicks part is really just another way to boost their sales!! Be careful to note the PRICE of your purchase. Blicks is notorious for mislabelling items or simply not posting a price at all! And, lastly, I just want to walk into a store, find my art supplies, pay and leave. The instant I walked into the Capitol Hill store no fewer than 3 sales people turned and yelled HELLO at me. I resisted the urge to slowly back out. I know it is meant to appear like a jolly friendly place but clearly these poor sales people were operating on orders from the corporate office. Their greeting was as warm as organized charity. It is phony and it doesn't create a friendly atmosphere at all. Perhaps I sound like a crank but I've just about had it with these chirpy, peppy greeters. (Take note, Bank of America). Everyone knows about inflation but few keep track of the numbers. Our costs have gone up ( say ) 5% so let's raise our prices (say ) 10%. They'll never know. read more

I buy a lot of my art supplies via Blick's online store and I have always wanted to visit a brick and mortar store, unfortunately Indiana doesn't have any. During our recent Seattle trip we had some free time and I was delighted to see that my Airbnb was not too far from this location! Parking was fairly easy, just on the street in front of the store. Like most stores in the city, Blick's windows are still boarded up, but still open for social distancing shopping. I was pleased with the selection of sketchbooks, watercolor paper, notebooks (I love seeing the different sizes of Leuchttumrm notebooks!) colored pencils, markers, paints... all the things! The aisles are marked with one way arrows on the floors and if you pick up/touch an item you don't want, you put it in a designated area on the shelf. Not going to lie, I didn't realize this until my hubby pointed it out to me on the second aisle. They should make the signs a little larger, but I definitely appreciate their effort to keep things sanitary. I did not need help from any of the staff, but they were pleasant and did check in with us once in a while. No issues checking out, but I'm still waiting for every place to have no touch/contact checkout. Which, we will probably end up with online stores only, but I'm happy that I got to visit an actual Blick store once! read more

Small heads up- There's a parking garage directly behind the store in the alley. Blick will actually validate your parking if you purchase 10 dollars or more from their store. Make sure you remember to ask as you're checking out! They will simply hand you a paper ticket. The parking garage is one of the tiniest garages in the world (specifically in regards to the parking spaces and entryway). Be cautious pulling in and out of there. I buy from Blick often and while their shipping can take a while for people on the west coast, I always have a great experience at the store. Recently I had made an online purchase of some open-stock colored pencils that needed exchanging. The staff at Blick allowed me to swap them out without any hassle, (just needed to show my online receipt from my phone). It's worth mentioning that they aren't always able to do this. I was just fortunate that they actually carried this particular brand inside the store. I'm not sure who checked me out but she was so sweet. I felt so annoying having to ask for an exchange because she had to enter in each pencil individually just as there was a line piling behind me. She held a smile the entire conversation and mentioned she used to live in Texas. One of the managers who assisted with my exchange had also apologized to me about not getting back to my email I'd sent a few hours earlier asking if it was even possible to do the exchange in the first place. Everyone is always kind and helpful! I've even called them to ask if things were in stock multiple times and while I could tell they were busy, they were still more than willing to check on those items. The store is always gorgeous, well stocked, and clean. It's rare that I don't find what I'm looking for inside the store and if they don't have it, it's likely they do online. read more

Well, I'm no artist and I felt like one! I felt like I wanted everything from here! I went with part of my family which are artists and the felt like in an amusement park!! We spent 1.5 hours here. Yes, it is big but not as an amusement park. The divide all their stuff on materials and types of paint. You can find everything. Even if you are not into this, you could probably get out the shop with something like myself! I found wool to use with shoes when it is cold. Not sure about the store itself, but Blick Arts (as a whole) has the best customer service I have ever experienced. I order online a lot and I have had a few problems like receiving the wrong item and a couple times my woodpanel has been damaged during shipping or one warped after I painted on it. And every time I have called they take care of me right away. No waiting on hold or being transferred. When my large wood panel was damaged they let me keep it and sent me a new one. I appreciate not having to send something so large back. Then I received a hand written note from the customer service agent with a gift card. This company truly values its customers. read more

I have mixed feelings about Blick. While the staff is super helpful on the floor when you're looking for something and the store has everything you can need, the way they handle their lines is not great. Every time I go into the store there will be a line of at least 3 which is fine except there's only 1 cashier working and 2 behind the register desk but either socializing or doing other things. It's like they see the line and are ignoring it which is the worst feeling as a customer! They have a great selection but wouldn't recommend coming here if you want to be quick or efficient. read more

While I understand that Capitol Hill has a certain attitude, I never expected the employees to be so rude and helpless! My friend and I were here on a Thursday afternoon, so they weren't at all busy but none of the employees wanted to help us find or even point us in a direction of what we were looking for. One employee literally said "I don't know, look for yourself." And when we finally did find one of the items we wanted, an employee pops out of nowhere as if he wanted to make sure we weren't stealing! Being ham-handed with my .01mm pens, constantly breaking the nib off their tips - I was in need of new pens - and I remembered Michele R's recent five star review on the Blick in the Pearl. I knew there was a Blick on Broadway here in Seattle, so I thought I would check it out. For parking, I found it easy to park for free at Harvard Square and just walk up the block to Blick, which is located on the corner of Pine and Broadway. On a Saturday, this store was quite busy, but I was able to quickly navigate to the supplies I wanted. Oh, I discovered blending stumps here, and now, I totally love 'em and can't live without 'em. The checkout line was fairly long, but because there were several cashiers, the line moved quickly. But watch your cashier like a hawk. My cashier was a little disorganized segregating items rung up with items not yet rung up, and she rang up two items twice. She complemented me on having sharp eyes to have noticed her mistakes. Im going to keep this short and sweet. This place is perfect from painting to DIY, crafting, drawing, need a new easel, and check out their sale books, i mean MOST of the times its not marked. Prisma markers were UP TO 60% off this weekend, didn't need any but for that price done. We also got this 56 pack of markers for 26 bucks. I mean if your into adult coloring this place has all the coloring books and tools to complete.. Looking for crafty kids presents for the holidays, stop on in. Is it just me or does their customer service seem lacking? The salespeople don't seem approachable and when I do, they give off a look that makes me feel like I'm annoying them when I ask them for help. However the only exception to this are the people who work in the framing/print area. I had a few of my pieces reprinted as gifts for friends and they were super helpful in helping me in everything from cropping to even the type of paper the pieces should be printed on. The rest of the store could definitely learn a few things from them. read more

Blick is pretty much as good as it gets when it comes to art supplies. The deathtrap you walk into with art supply stores is that it's near unpossible not to purchase anything.. or spend a lot more than you expected to for that matter. I was impressed with the range of supplies they have here. Everything from book binding supplies, easels, canvases, papers, and pens and markers as far as the eye can almost see. The employees are cool and knowledgeable. They'll always ask you if you need assistance and when you ask them, they're often on top of the answer. It's in Capitol Hill and there's no parking lot so if you're getting a lot of stuff it can be a pain. They have validated parking, which helps.. but it would be improved if they managed to have a dedicated parking lot. Also, I know it's just the way it goes but I wish the prices weren't so cray cray. read more

I dont paint, I dont sculpt, I dont draw, I dont doodle....Im just not very artsy where I need art materials. I have friends that are and come in here with them so they can get supplies. Or sometimes if I am meeting someone in the area and need to burn a few minutes, I go in here to browse around. They never used to have a greeter at the door but they did when I went the last time, she was nice, showing us the flyer to what is on sale etc, asked us if we were looking for something in particular and gave us her name in case we needed something. My friend got what she needed, and everything seemed easy to find. I like the fun stuff they have up front, stuff for your desk, small little gag gifts, cool junk that you may not need but kind of want. Anyways, a good art supply store and cool store to come in to check out. Dont forget to check out the Jimi Hendrix memorial statue outside too. read more

A quick story why the people at Blick are great! Yelp says the store is open until 9:00PM. So assuming Yelp was correct, I drove from Renton area and got there at 8:05PM. But the store actually closes at 8:00PM (and 8:00 is what it says on the glass door). I tapped on the glass door because a store associate was just inside. He opened the door and I showed and explained to him that my phone Yelp app says the store is open until 9:00, and I just needed to grab one quick thing. The manager and employee were cool with me coming in after hours so I could make my purchase. Great staff, THANK YOU!!!! Here's what I like about Dick Blick: 1) The managing team are knowledgeable about their products and can recommend what you need according to your budget and desired outcome. 2) They carry a great selection of high, medium and affordable products and are constantly running specials and sales. I used to abuse the year-end 50% custom framing sale...sorry, it's my fault they didn't have it last year. :( 3) Gamblin paint used to only be sold by a select few in Seattle for some reason, and they were the small tubes. I'm glad that...embargo has been lifted. 4) Jimi Hendrix guards the damn place! Unfortunately...I'm not crazy about the parking on Capital Hill...but it's not their fault. It does make it a challenge if you're bringing in and leaving with larger purchases on a rainy day. PRO TIP: CALL AHEAD to see if they have the thing you want. If not, they can order it for you and you don't have to pay for shipping. read more

Huge selection of art supplies at the Capitol Hill Seattle location plus I do buy from Blick via mail order. There's validated parking in a small garage behind the store which is a great perk in this neighborhood though don't wander around all day, I think it's about an hour. I come here for oil and watercolor paint and supplies of which they have an amazing variety of high quality brands down to decent student grade. Blick has some inexpensive in house brands too. Also amazing pens and other graphic supplies. If I need good watercolor paper sheets though, it is cheaper for me to order mail order. The Blick basic black frame and white mat is also a good deal and I've gotten them here in the store when I was in a rush. You can get really professional supplies here - or just check out fun artsy toys and kid's gifts. Fabulous price on gold leaf supplies, still blowing gold flakes out of my nose after two weeks of gilding. Lots of supplies in the sale rack at the back. Yes I do use the color puce when I paint, so it was nice that it was 75% off. Adore all of the papers-no run of the mill wrapping paper from me when you get a birthday present. They have a nice selection of mesh for sculpture which is great to make chain mail armor for Halloween, Yes, we went as the Knights who say Neek.
