Stopped by here one day on a whim just to peruse the place for inspiration. I had no goal in mind other than "oh let me see what they have." I really liked some of the cool paper in the upstairs area, although I didn't have any inspiration to buy any. When I found the aisle with yarn, I was a little disappointed that there wasn't a larger selection. The one thing that really bothered me is during the whole 10 minutes I was in the store, I had at least 8 different staff ask me if I needed help. ("What are you painting?" "Need new acrylics?" Etc) It reached that level of annoying like Nordstrom's holiday sale where people are racing for the highest commission. I hate saying people are "too helpful" but because it actually interfered with my ability to feel comfortable in there, I had to leave. Maybe it's because it was the day after Black Friday or something but I wish they weren't so pushy. I would return but next time, I'll wear big obnoxious headphones to zone out. This is a nice store that sells art, framing and even crafts supplies. Staff is also helpful. To be honest I thought I'd be like a kid in a candy store, but I only purchased a couple items. I found the prices a tad bit high. The products here are good quality but I'm a starving artist and I like to look for deals. I will still return here though because I really like their large selection of traditional and wooden canvases. I havent seen circular or oval canvases any where else. read more

I originally went to the Blick store to pick up a pro frame driver gun for a particular event. I'm a visual artist and this store is my candy store. So during the event I realized the product I have purchased was broken. I brought it back and the staff at the frame center (Jeremy and another awesome girl) tried their best to fix it. When they realized they couldn't, they and Larry (the store manager) went above and beyond for me. They reserved another frame driver gun and simply did a switch. This is just one of many positive visits I've had with this Blick store. Time and time again they continue to prove that I only need this art supplier, local and friendly! I believe three stars is a perfect rating for Blick Art Materials. The store has a really great selection of art supplies you would need. Not the best selection in store but pretty good. Online they have even more supplies that the store doesn't have. However, the prices between online and in the store vary. Sometimes the website will have items 50% off and in store they are the list price..? My advice to anyone wanting to get anything from Blick would be to check online prices before going into the store and to mostly use the store to try out certain supplies or to see them in person to get an idea of what you will get when you leave and buy it online for less money. I went in looking for a pen, watercolors, and two brushes. The pen was 20 dollars in store, the watercolors were 44.95 in store, and the two brushes together were 32.45 in store. Online I purchased all of them, on their website, for 62.82 plus shipping. Shippings where they really get ya ha ha. But if I bought it in store that day it would have been 97.38 and that's before tax! I'm not sure if this is some sort of false advertising or if they only do sales online and never do any sales in the store. So buyer beware you'll spend way less on buying the supplies on their own website vs. buying in store and I'd gladly wait a week or so for 34.57 dollars savings. My items were a pentel brush pen (10.68), Van Gogh watercolor 10 tube set(24.44), a black velvet round brush 2(5.00) and a 6(7.98), and 8.95 shipping and 5.77 for taxes. I love the Blick store, the selection they have in store compared to other local art stores near me, and the staff is always friendly, polite, and eager to help me find what I'm looking for. Good luck trying to find a place to park. Drove around for 3 minutes and finally just drove back to Redmond. Take the bus or Uber - so factor in $20 parking/bus/toll charges into your purchase decision before you start. Yet another reason why on-line shopping is winning. read more

My boyfriend and his family are artists. My boyfriend's dad stopped patronizing this store in the 80's but I've always wondered why my boyfriend doesn't stop in. I found out today. Very rude service! Especially in the back framing section. We asked if they would cut some plastic film for us. What we received from the workers behind the counter was not good customer service but a dismissive attitude. Very sad to see and worth a poor review. Customer service is key. Even if the questions you're being asked aren't ideal and you're not sure how to answer them just trying to get someone to walk away does not make them want to spend money in your store. I would expect just an attempt to answer the question, or point one in the right direction without a dismissive attitude isn't too much to ask. read more

The staff is really kind and knowledgeable. They don't have such a large selection of yarns and knitting supplies which was unfortunate, but they make up for it in selection of paints. They also have a large selection of paint brushes! read more

If I could leave a zero star review, I absolutely would. My boyfriend and I had never been to this store before and we both were actually pretty excited because we found a TON of AWESOME stuff! Well, long story short, we had been in there for almost an hour and were about to rap up our shopping when an employee, I'm assuming the manager, came up to me and told me they had a 30 minute policy... I told him I was trying to find my boyfriend.... so when I finally found my boyfriend, the same man rudely came up to us and said "okay, it's time for you guys to take off"..... we had two full baskets, plenty of cash, and were about to drop about $300-$400 there. My boyfriend looked at me and said "You know what? We aren't spending our money here." I was super bummed, but I agreed. We took our full baskets up to the front, asked the same man where we could put them and he looked shocked and said "You don't want any of this?" And my boyfriend said "No thanks" and I added "We don't want to spend our money here now." And we left. I honestly feel like that man thought we were stealing but that was so far from the case, not to mention, we have PLENTY of money to spend, we don't need to steal. So we will be taking our cash to another art store who isn't rude and won't tell us to get out because we're brand new customers just trying to make sure we have a chance to check out every isle. Back when I was a kid, and this store was known by its full name, Dick Blick, I owned a Dick Blick eraser, which at the tender age of 7 or so, I carefully and dispassionately modified with a slim Xact-o knife so that it read "DICK _LICK" while "The Bionic Woman" played in the background. I remember this clearly; it might as well have been this afternoon. It wasn't until I moved to Seattle that I realized this place was a big, beautiful store. The eraser memory, a serene one, spilled into my consciousness. So this was DICK _LICK! When I happened upon this store, it was like Xanadu. Rows upon rows of pens. Ahhh pens. The Microns I so love; every color you can imagine, and the tiniest mm sizes, right there next to the brush pens in full spectrum...oh sweet baby Jebus the COPIC markers...even the newest, pale illustrator-series colors like buff and creme brulee and the palest imaginable cyan and apricot. My love of art supplies stores is legendary, but this place is another whole notch above. Not to mention their sales kick all kinds of retail ass. Today, and I believe tomorrow, if you're reading this review hot off the griddle, everything is 20% off. I picked up three all-media sketchbooks--9x12" with at least 100 sheets, thick and medium-high quality, for $6.50 each. And their everyday Micron prices are better than most other stores. I've also really dug the Aquaboard squares, which have a rough, almost semi-gloss outer finish to endure watercolors (and a deep enough layer of this that you could probably rub away mistakes and still be able to repaint) but it still also works for markers and drafting pens. Those were also on sale. The service here is so friendly, funny, down-to-earth and helpful, too...they actually help you to save money, and point out discounts and ways to squeeze the poo out of your every buffalo nickel. I was really skeptical about Blick when they first moved into the neighborhood... but then I went through their doors and found a lovely store where I can buy ALL of the artsty fartsy stuff I want. Photo portfolio? Check! Painting easel? Check! Sharpies in 30 colors? Check! What more could I need? Oh yes... a little wooden cat statue so I can draw cats in my spare time. ha! The store is very clean and the employees have always been very helpful and friendly. I needed some heavy duty paper to be cut to some very specific measurements and the woman did it with a big smile on her face. I also saw a few employees receive a pizza and heard them mutter that their manager (or boss?) bought it for them. I'm sure it was a treat but when employees are treated well, they tend to work harder. No wonder everyone was so pleasant. If only there's a way I could have finagled myself a slice or two... ;) Oh! Oooo. While not my favorite of area art supplies, Blick is probably the closest and has more than enough to keep my amateur artist self busy with projects. So many pens! So many sketchpads (including my favorite cheap-o wind power sketch books)! And alright selection for canvas. Tons and tons of paint and oil pastels and, well.. you get the picture. There is a ton of art stuff in here, even framing services available! Prices vary -- but on the whole seem pretty on par for an art supply store. Sometimes there are awesome deals, and sometimes you don't know why this thing is priced so much... I guess where the last star gets lost for me are the employees. Every time I have been in here I just felt something was lacking with the staff. Either distracted, not knowledgeable about products when I have a question, or just not nice. Maybe I have gotten way too spoiled with the phenomenal customer service I always get when I hit up the Artist & Craftsman supply in the U-District....but these folks seem a bit lacking. Although, as a slight plus they do allow my dog to tag along with me in here which is cool. I'll be coming back certainly due to stock and proximity! We first encountered Blick Art Materials during a visit in Portland. We were so impressed that we vowed to come back. We ended up in Seattle and our visit isn't what I originally expected. I've noticed pros and cons during my visit. My take on it is some of the art material are a little on the expensive side but they're better quality than most items you'll find on chain art stores. Quality is better especially if you have the money to spend. If you do get their own brand, you might get a good deal. The biggest pro that I found on this place is the fact that their canvas are already gessoed and ready to paint on. There's also an area where you can customize your own canvas and they offer all kinds of paint brands you can wrap your head in. Also, they do have a membership card. You can get discounts on certain art materials but the discount Is not clear cut if you're just browsing around. There are items on sale but it's not as extensive. So use your membership card for better advantage. You might also find their own website pretty useful if you know what's you're looking for. Service wise, the employees are nice and very knowledgeable. They're mostly artist so you won't have any problem asking how to use certain items. Truly a gem for artist. This place has EVERYTHING. And best of all, you can peruse it online first if you so desire. The catalogs have been coming to my house since my guy and I moved in together and having a store of our very own is a delight. I went in for a gift certificate - missed holiday wishlist item- and came out with a fantastic art magazine to hold it in. While there, I had fantastic service and poked around to find everything all my artists (man, son pre-k daughter) could ever want. They have a membership program, deals, and coupons which - for any and every artist out there - is immensely helpful. The store is well organized, staff helpful (but usually very very busy and understaffed), and they have a decent assortment of materials for different artist needs. I do wish they had more of a variety of brand. Blick brand is affordable, but not the best in my experience. I'd be willing to pay a little more for some options that were better quality. Every time I'm there, I get the feeling that things are just.. "missing". I wish with all my heart that they had parking. It makes it very difficult to find the motivation to come in when you know you'll be lugging bags full across the street and beyond, depending on the parking that's available. read more

Blick, it's a fine chain art store that now graces Broadway where every day music was. The grand opening party was grand. They served orderves with a wait staff walking around. free beverages, including micro brewed beer (which is a great marketing idea. you can't leave with an opening container so you spend more time, or drink it so fast and you will get buzzed and buy impassively) They had spin the wheel to win free prizes.I won watercolor crayons. The store it self had everything. Paint supplies,markers,pens,Holga cameras(unfortunately the art of the camera is left out at brick with no film processing equipment), screen printing boards and supplies. They also have graffiti artist choice of spray paint "Montana" with all designer colors that are imaginable. Blick has stencils that would appear on an 15 year old emo girls bedroom walls containing skulls and stars, but I think they might work with some creativity. Brick has a selection of books to get yourself inspired and also how to books. After your done painting they have a framing services with a wide selection of woods and styles. Even though I love supporting local bis, I think Blick will fit right in the Broadway community. read more

Finally! A giant art supply store for the indie cool Capitol Hill dwellers! It just goes hand in hand really.The location is perfect as well. Right on Broadway! Rainbow colors of pens, markers, pencils, paints, etc. might first overwhelm you. But then you encounter upon the array of beautiful sketch pads, Moleskin notebooks, crafting books, crafty cool cards, and lomo cameras!! Lets not forget Blick is fabulous for all the artistic basic supplies. Choice is more than an option here - its a necessity! Staff is fairly helpful, if a bit slow when checking out. Just try your hardest not to be persuaded by the cute little pens, buttons, and other random oddities that would make for happy little gifts. Art supply heaven!!! read more

**update** I'll upgrade to 2 stars because the General Manager said he would adjust the price as a one time courtesy. I still don't know that I'll be coming back to the store location if I can get things cheaper and the right item in the right quantities online. They're one of the only places locally that sell this item. They are NOT the only place online. Seems like they're kind of shooting themselves in the foot on this one. Every time I come in here it's typically for one specific marker in a specific color. They are ALWAYS out despite being told repeatedly by me and the other people I work with that they would purchase as many as they would order. This time I called ahead to see if they had them in stock. The girl gave me an attitude on the phone and said she was busy and would look and call me back. Good thing I didn't wait - they closed over an hour ago and she never called back (I gave her 7 hours). I showed up at the store and they were out. I grabbed a couple less-than-ideal markers to get by until I could find the right ones. Then I see the price. $5.15 a marker. Typically these run $2-3 a piece. I checked their website, and sure enough - listed at $2.96. I bring them to the register and ask the guy and he has no idea what to say. He says maybe if I use my preferred discount whatever account that it'll take the extra off. So he enters it - and nothing happens. He calls another guy over who looks at my phone with their website on it, the register and then confidently explains that the extra cost is because it costs money to ship these things to the store and they pass that cost onto the customer. Excuse me? $2.22 shipping PER MARKER? I don't think so. He made me feel like an idiot. I bit my tongue and made the purchase because I had to. Called customer service and they basically said the store is full of crap - they should have honored the web price. Customer service woman even confirmed with her supervisor. Now I have to wait until they open again and try to talk to their GM and figure this whole mess out. This store just kind of does the bare minimum - and sometimes doesn't even squeeze that much together. Still waiting on that phone call, too. read more

The whole block is great, Capitol Hill in DT Seattle. Im not going to give a long review, however briefly I may state, they are moving onto perfection every day. The spacing isn't tight as it may seem, the horizontal layout with all the aisles lined with craft material are well organized from framing down to tape on the opposite end of the store. A few Saturdays ago we pulled out 6 pieces of art we'd been meaning to frame for years. My wife read up online about frame shops in Madison Valley and Cap Hill. We hadn't expected there to be much passion about Blick as a frame shop as it's a national chain, but reviews about Blick's framing department swayed our opinion and away we went. Fast forward 3 weeks and our lovingly framed art is back at the house with a masterful sense of style achieved through the fine work of Alexandr in Blick's frame shop. Alexandr (yes, spelled like Flickr) struck the perfect balance between presenting us with ample framing options and helping us curate our look by more or less reading our sense of style. It was a delight collaborating with him and the result is fantastic. To top it off, Blick had a 50% sale on framing that weekend and the final price tag was unexpectedly light. We've framed quite a bit in the past and know that's it's always more expensive than you'd imagine, but once we saw the style and finish of Alexandr's work we felt it a bargain. I spent most of my time in the graphite pencil/drawing aisle. So many choices at reasonable prices. I picked up a 9B graphite pencil, 2B pencil, an eraser, and a small sketch book for less than $10. I recently moved to Cap Hill and this store has turned out to be very convenient for us. Our walls had been too bare for our taste, and Blick is a great place for wall hanging needs. I found my new favorite hanging tools here, making putting stuff in our walls a breeze. They have a wonderful selection of frames, great quality at good prices (and the selection is one to appease any style). I also love all their pens and sharpies, it's so fun to look through them all! So the main reason I continue to go to here is because it's just a couple of blocks from home, making it the closest art supply store. Also because they have pretty good deals and reasonable prices, & you get a 10% discount on your purchases if you get a membership card (free; just need to sign up). In spite of all that, what does it say of the place if I really don't want to continue going there? It's the staff. It's not that they're not knowledgeable. It's the stuck-up, condescending attitude and looks you get. They couldn't want you there less. It's become a true art form they've mastered. And I'm oh-so-tired. Go spend your money elsewhere. They have a great selection of traditional art supplies, and great specials! The staff is generally friendly, but typical Cap Hill aloofness will be found there. If you are easily offended then shopping in cap hill might not be for you... I have lived here for years, so It doesn't really bother me. But should be noted... My main beef is their crappy selection of Graffiti supplies. They are abysmal at best. Pretty much only Montana Gold products that no one in the graffiti art world wants anymore. The only reason they have it is because they distribute through the arts materials market, which is completely clueless about the needs of Graffiti Muralists. So no Molotow, no MTN, no Flame, no Smash, no Kobra, no Grog, no OTR, no streakers, no Sekt adapters, no metal tips, no nothing! Just plain, overpriced Montana Gold and their crappy Acrylic markers. Which everyone knows are a poorly executed copy of the Molotow One4all series. So if you are looking for fine art, then this is your place. but if you need Graff supplies, there is no substitute for Artprimo Fridays. Also check out BC Surf on the ave & Dakota Art supply in Ballard. They actually have a better selection of graff gear than DB. Step up your game dick! read more

Love this store! SO happy that it it opened up and so close to home. It has so many art supplies, aisles and aisles of awesomeness!...it's art supply heaven! The selection of paper was really nice. I was able to get some origami paper there, which wasn't on my shopping list but hey, it was there so I bought it. What I INITIALLY went in for though was for glitter for my glitter shoes project. The sad thing is they don't have a large selection of glitter besides 3 primary colors and 1 rainbow glitter container. It was in the kids section too so I was out of luck there. That was when I knew that I had to go to Jo-Anns for that purchase. :| Though my browsing through the store did yield a mod podge variety pack purchase (which had the outdoor mod podge I need for another project!) The store had reasonably priced items and if I was still really into painting or needed supplies for matting/framing, I would FOR SURE go here. They even had some oval canvases of varying sizes which was a nice surprise. They also had some cute cards and storage containers and even blank Munny's too which was a nice touch. They have a very wide selection of fine quality goods, and their sales associates know what's up (I will say they made a mistake letting Marcel go, he really knew his stuff, but whatev). I have bought the following excellent goods here: - stickers galore - resin mix for resin casting - Model Magic - styrofoam shapes for sculpting and much more. My main problem with this store is that it is to close to my house. I am tempted to spend way to much money on art supplies! I don't have room in my apartment to build frames and strech canvas so I have come to rely on their selection of canvases and artboards. Their selection is easier to shop than Utrecht's (the other local art store). Utrecht's canvases tend to be a bit cheaper, but also not as well made. I love their Blick Studio line of canvases which is a midrange canvas in terms of price and sturdiness. Buy Blick stuff on sale! They often have sales at the beginnings of the semester for students - great time to buy quality supplies at reduced prices. Make sure you compare prices though, because there are a few things in the store that are oddly expensive. Also, this is an ART store not a CRAFT store, while they do have craft supplies they are limited (if you are looking for any textile craft supplies look elsewhere). Ask the staff for help! They have always known just where to find what I was looking for (or have helped me avoid fruitless searching....) They are typically knowledgeable about at least a couple types of art and can give great advice if you ask them something within their perview (ask them about what kind of art they like to do themselves and if they have ever worked with the materials you are inquiring about). read more
