Seattle ReCreative is a cool place to browse for odds and ends that you need for your latest crafting venture. Need a few Scrabble tiles? This is the place. Want just enough Modge Podge to finish that decoupage project? Go here. Need some rubber stamps to make homemade cards or gift tags? Definitely go here! They have a big selection. The place is rather messy and hodgepodge and had an odd smell when I was there. If you're someone who likes their shopping experience to be clean, well-lit, and orderly, this ain't your joint. But it's fun to go through the shop to inspire yourself and see if any treasures call out to you. Some things were a great buy and some were not, so shop wisely. Staff were welcoming and friendly, and I support the reuse and upcycle mission of Seattle ReCreative, so I'll be back. read more

I love this place! It's like a thrift store for your crafting needs. Yarn, fabric, art supplies, stickers, papers, embroidery, needlepoint, used stamps, vintage photos, international paper money, etc. They also have used books/magazines for crafts and plastic containers. Hmmmm... while I like the concept of this store, I'm not sure it's a place I'd add to my regular rotation for craft supplies. They have pretty much everything, but much if it is pretty junky. (It is very well organized junk though!) You name it, and they probably have it. There's everything from typical craft supplies (like yarn, fabric, paper products, painting supplies, etc.) to tidbits, do-dads, and bric-a-brac that could be used in all sorts of different applications. From old school photo slides, twist ties, random pen parts, and aluminum can tabs, if it can be put into a bin they've likely got it. They have some cool stuff too, like drawers of old maps, oodles of office/school supplies, beads, pens, and everything needlework. But it takes a lot of digging around to find what you might be looking for. And, once you do, the prices aren't really that amazing of a bargain - especially considering most of their items are very old. I spent nearly an hour in here and didn't buy a single thing. If you know anything about my addiction to upcycled craft supplies, this might resonate. The store was so crammed full of stuff, some of which looked like it's literally been here for decades, it was hard to feel inspired. At the very least, they should have some kind of colored tag system so items get rotated more frequently. It gave off major "organized hoarding" vibes. Updating to 3 stars! Lots of little knick knacks, and sometimes you can find sustainable fiber that they price at 50% off and fabric scraps for making small things. There's fun junk to browse like old photo prints and some odder things like pill bottles and toilet paper tubes. It's a fun place to browse but sometimes the interactions here aren't giving. It can be a little uncomfortable. You feel like you're in their way when you go check out. Kind of weird....if you see recent reviews seems like that can be the case sometimes. Seattle Recreative is volunteer basis and not for profit so not sure why. read more

Great idea, poor execution. I have been to this store a few times and have found some items, but there is a lot of junk to sift through. I went yesterday and decided to donate a small bag of expensive unused art supplies. I was met with rudeness from the cashier, because I didn't have an appointment. So I waited for her to tell me how to make that appointment, which she didn't offer so I asked... she then responded that I need to do this by email. She didn't provide the email and when I asked she said "it's on the website." This behavior is inexcusable. This store should be grateful of people willing to give you business and donations. I shouldn't have to jump through hoops to donate. I've actually never need to a business who only accepts donations by appointment. Then not willing to set up the appointment in person or even provide the email address. This is lazy, snarky behavior and I will no longer plan to donate here. read more

This shop is a wonderful resource for sewing items rather than fabric. The staff was wonderful, helpful and knowledgeable about where items were stored. It's a very SMALL store yet packed with useful items now that JoAnne's is closed. I'm grateful to have found it! read more

Love the selection at this store! I can always fine something that I need for a great price. This is a nonprofit run by a few staff and many volunteers. Always a friendly face to help locate obscure supplies, and I love that they offer masked shopping one day a week! Oh my gosh this place is my new favorite store! If you like arts and crafts, good deals AND thrifting this place is for you. I got so much yarn, some of it from the 70's I'm sure, for such a great deal. Ignore the reviews saying this place is un organized and crammed, it's a THRIFT store! You have to be willing to embrace the chaos, do a little digging and you will be rewarded with some real gems! I will never go back to JoAnns! I left with a full bag or gems for $17! Prices are so accessible for anyone hoping to find reasonably priced craft supplies, and it's great to encourage sustainable material exchanges. If you are going to make a donation, look online to see if they're accepting the materials being donated and book ahead of time before your purge. Donation wait times can be as long as one month. Also, I recommend grabbing a coffee across the street before you go in to browse. I like chocolati across the street. A note: this place is requiring masks so come prepared! Have an artists' block? Come to this store! You will find odd and unusual art supplies that will likely strike inspiration! This has been my experience, as I usually come in to get ideas. I love the philosophy behind the store, in that everything can have a second life as art. For example, one time I needed to create a "mechanical" makeup look and I found nuts, bolts, and spinning gadgets from here that ended up elevating my look. I think I spent about 25 cents in total. One man's trash is definitely another man's treasure in this store! Highly recommend for a starting artist who wants to dip their toes into creating art but wants to do it on a budget, or even a more experienced artist that needs to break out of their comfort zone and try something different. read more

I love this place. I always try to stop here first before beginning a new project. Crafting can be so wasteful and I love how this store aims to reduce waste and give materials a second life. Some items are brand-new/hardly used and the prices are excellent. The materials they have in stock are variable, as it depends on what's been donated, but stumbling upon unique and didn't-think-you-needed-it items is part of the charm. Really nice little store! It's pretty heavily focused on fabric and fiber crafts, so there's a huge selection of yarn and textile scraps. It operates as a nonprofit so prices are really low. I LOVE this place!!!!! It's the best thrift store any artist and creator can ask for!! I hesitate to tell people about it because it's my little creative haven but I also want people to experience how wonderful it is. Most importantly, I appreciate the store's penchant for recycling and I certainly appreciate those who in turn support the store and keep it in business. If you are a local and in need of some random craft supplies, this is a great place to go. I am not a local. Instead I went out of my way to visit this shop. Being an avid thrift store shopper, including the famous Goodwill outlets, I doubt I'll return to this store. Personally, I was expecting higher quality, albeit used, art supplies. No such luck. Yes they did have some used Golden mediums, but the price was so high I'd rather pay a bit more and get a full new bottle. Again, maybe I was being unrealistic hoping to find a quality Copic marker or a quality watercolor pencil.... And honestly upon opening the file cabinet marked 'markers' and seeing a huge jumble of what looked like cheap Crayola and Rose Art markers, I didn't look too hard. I'm sure buried treasures can be found. If you need a green button, this is the place to go. If you need a handful of nails or pen caps or random scrapbook paper, again, this is the place to go. I'm really glad we have this in our neighborhood. It's a great place to go when you need a little something. Like the day I needed a piece of leather about the size of a dime. They had a whole bin full of leather scraps to choose from. Then there was the day I needed replacement knitting needles for a kid who lost hers. You go in looking for one thing and find all sorts of other treasures. I found National Geographic magazines older than me. Lots and lots of yarn. Tissue paper and notecards. This store has great crafts for great prices! We got some paper squares and it was 50 cents for 6 of them. The cards were $1 for 12 of them. Great supplies for art projects or sewing projects! But there's one thing: the lack of customer service. The cashier was efficient but unfriendly and distracted. She didn't make eye contact or smile. WOW! My favorite place for artsy-crafty ideas and inspiration. You name it and they've got it along with hundreds of things you can't name. There are shelves, drawers, and cubby holes loaded with everything from old maps, yarn, fabric, rocks, costume parts, industrial tid-bits, greeting cards, paper of all kinds. Whereas I was into this shop when it first opened, after hearing two staff members very specifically detail how the business falls short of the money necessary to pay the paid employees, they then went on to decide aloud to label a bottle of donated hair dye as paint and sell it, which just left me with the feeling this biz has reached it's jumping the shark phase. The store helps support their mission to promote creativity, community and environmental stewardship through creative reuse and art education. How awesome is that?! They have a ton of new and lightly used items and although things are well organized, if you can't find what you're looking for, the staff is friendly and helpful. This nonprofit recycles too many types of art supplies to list. They always have a great selection of the standards: yarn, fabric, pencils/pen/markers, paints, papers, etc. But because they are donation based, you never know what you will find. I've gotten picture frames and mats, buttons, high quality colored pencils (75 cents/ handful), ribbons and bows, marbles, beads, paint brushes, a piece of marble to use as a coaster, and so much more there. The people are very helpful, and they also have a work space program and numerous pieces of equipment you can use for your project. They also have have classes and groups that meet there. All in all, a pleasant experience. But beware, you can lose yourself in there just looking at all the cool stuff. read more

This has now become my favorite place for second use craft supplies and the first place I go! You have to do a bit of digging but there's a ton of smaller scale interesting items for very reasonable prices. They've got a huge variety of things including sewing supplies, material scraps & samples (wood, glass, fabric, interior design samples), plaster, wire / cords, paints, and old books / magazines for little more than pennies. The staff and volunteers are super helpful and knowledgable on a wide range of artistries. I like to come here to get materials for architecture concept models. A typical trip to the craft store for a final model runs about $50+ but I found everything that I needed at Seattle Recreative for $13 AND you're up cycling things that would otherwise end up in a landfill. They're also open until 6pm on Mondays (and Thursdays?) now. Before you buy your crafting supplies brand new, definitely check this place out. read more

This unusual art/ craft shop carries many types of Items not found in many " regular" craft stores; for example, people donate items here, and the store prides itself on vintage , unusual crafting items. Some donated vintage family photos , older or vintage sewing supplies, vintage aprons , ribbons, yarn, crochet thread, sewing thread, older patterns for sewing, jars, containers, paints, laces, many kinds of paper, post cards, vintage greeting cards and the list goes on. Since these items are donated , you get a variety of craft items one wouldn't usually see; today I purchased several craft books, a photo of a nurse, craft paper and a few books. There's old jewelry,beads, and many partly finished embroidery projects. The prices are fair, and people who enjoy crafting and repurposing objects will enjoy shopping here. I'm giving this 3 stars, and only because in one area, there was a light with a cord hanging down low enough that someone could possibly walk by, not notice it and the cold could be a safety hazard. The staff will help you, if you're looking for a specific item... otherwise, one could spend a while here looking in the various areas. This place is fantastic! I've been a fan since it opened. Recently stopped in to use the community maker space (room with large table and assorted supplies and small tools). The maker space is available to the community when not in use for classes. I wanted to see a few small cat toys and I don't have a good sewing space in my house. There was about 45 mins before a class, so I was able to knock out a few of my cat toys (my cats love them!) using their sewing machine and my other supplies.
