I visited Tricoter for the first time today. I had a completely lovely experience and will definitely be back the next time I am in town. I was greeted immediately by Beryl and given plenty of time to get acquainted with the shop. I bought two skeins of a yarn to finish a project (originally bought online from Tricoter) and shopped around for other interesting possibilities. I ended up working closely with the staff to select yarn and swatch for a sweater. Everyone I worked with was super encouraging and helpful (it was a complex pattern for a discontinued yarn, so there were potentially lots of issues that they simplified for me). I learned a new trick for the long-tail cast-on (I had always resisted it in favor of the cable which is what I learned years ago) and the brioche stitch which I had never done before. I humbly offer the following tips: 1. I think the charms of this place are best evident if you go without a specific agenda, especially on your first visit. Think generally about treating yourself, or making a special gift for someone rather than looking for this yarn for that project; the latter won't be as much fun. 2. I have historically been annoyed at yarns being arranged by color, but at Tricoter it doesn't really matter. The shop is more about encouraging people to make the project that calls out to them rather than shopping randomly. There are lots and lots of store samples to get your inspiration going. In addition to an array of hard-to-find designer patterns and yarns, they can design a sweater just for you. 3. Give yourself plenty of time. I had most of the day to myself and spent all of of my free time (around 3 hours) there happily swatching and chatting with others. Bonus: there was a Tahki Stacy Charles trunk show on, with the man himself showing off the newest collection! 4. Let them help you. The team are literally expert knitters. If you go with the general idea of wanting something special but nothing in particular, you will have the best experience. They will encourage you to swatch. They will wind balls for you to try. If you don't like it, you get to try again. Ask questions. Have fun. Let go of every other yarn shop experience, however lovely it was. This is different and special. 5. Yes, be prepared to spend some money. You're not just buying beautiful yarn, you are buying a project that some smart and helpful people worked with you to select. I swatched, they blocked my swatch for me and measured me for sizing and will wind my skeins and ship them home for me. I never felt pressured to buy anything; rather, the staff seemed sincerely interested in me having the best result for my time and money invested in the project. 6. I could not imagine a better place for a beginner to learn or an intermediate knitter to enhance his or her skills. The staff are super patient. Be patient with yourself as you watch yarns and/or try new skills. If I could sum up my experience in a single phrase, it would be that I spontaneously hugged Beryl on my way out. read more

I hate to give such a negative review to a store that has so much to love. I had read the negative comments before, but the employees I had previously interacted with were super kind and I bought some circular knitting needles on one's recommendation. I went in today planning to get some supplies for another project - my first since knitting 3 of the same basic triangle scarf. I had some wool already (some beautiful merino from "So Much Yarn" at Pike Place), but assumed I'd need some new needles or perhaps some different wool if I wanted to use my current needles. I went to the back and when I put my coffee down on a shelf to take out my yarn to show her, the employee (or the owner, perhaps) very testily told me NEVER to put coffee down near the yarn - especially cashmere. It made sense that they were cautious, but her attitude was very rude - as if I were an inconsiderate child who needed scolding. I moved my coffee to the garbage can lid where she indicated I could put it and I explained what I was there for and she said - well you already have yarn that you purchased somewhere else. We can sell you some yarn, but we don't have time to get an inexperienced knitter set up on a project with wool they didn't buy here. I was shocked, and said - gosh, I'm feeling pretty unwelcome. I wasn't expecting anyone to get me set up with anything. I already have a pattern and was expecting to buy some needles at least. She started to say how she's "happy to help" me, but I felt so humiliated, I just left. There are so many knitters in there sitting around and talking and I had honestly hoped to be one of them one day once I became a better knitter, but I'll never return. I have never been treated so rudely in a shop in my life. read more

Tricoter is a gem. I first started coming here as a beginner knitter. The staff offered wonderful advice from patterns, colors, yarns to instructions. Whenever I was stuck on something or made a mistake, they were there to help. The staff is incredibly knowledgeable, friendly, and approachable. They can help customize patterns, as well as help with finishing work. Over the years, I have come here to knit, meeting some truly wonderful and welcoming group of people. Because Tricoter provides such a warm space for people to learn and gather, I find myself keep going back to find more projects. Not just a place where knitting supplies are sold, Tricoter is a genuine community space where people gather to share their love of knitting. I have gotten so spoiled that I am not sure I can go to any other yarn store. read more

Do NOT trust your beautiful & time consuming work to this shop. Well over a decade's work of work, & much of soul & life was with that piece - GONE. Took to this place for cleaning & blocking. They lost is. Never did take full responsibility - "oh we didn't get a tracking number & UPS can't locate. Oh - we can't find it." "Oh I know what goes into a work like this." NO - you don't know. Walked in to pick up a paltry sum for this loss - not a single person gave their apology. Also - they won't answer emails , even if you use the form on their site, they don't answer text messages & their voice mail is continuously full so you can't leave a message. I love this place so much! Not only do they have the most amazing range of gorgeous yarn and every needle, button, and all the bits and bobs you could possibly need for your next knitting project, they are unbelievably generous with their time and knowledge. I started coming here a little over a year ago and they basically taught me to knit. Every single person who works here is patient and kind. They will walk you through any and every step of your project, even make you a pattern, and all they ask is that you buy your supplies from them. I've even learned to put my projects together, although you can pay them to do that for you if you don't want to (and plenty of people do). They've built a real community in the shop as well - I've met the nicest, friendliest people there who come to knit and get help on their projects and chat at the same time. I feel incredibly lucky that Tricoter is in my neighborhood - I see them packing up yarn and books for people who live all over the country and often people come in who are in town just for a day and they tell me that Tricoter is always on their list of things they do in Seattle and I'm not even remotely surprised! read more

This is not a Hobby Lobby or a Michaels. It's a small, bustling yarn store with knitting enthusiasts that love what they do. You won't be greeted immediately upon arrival, because the staff are usually working one on one with other customers or taking the time to admire a visitor's work. Don't take offense to this! Take some time to look around at the many different styles and colors of yarn and wait your turn. Burle (correct spelling not gauranteed) asked me if she could help me find anything and then pointed me to the correct yarn and needle. She also introduced me to a nice young guy who does custom knitting projects for Tricoter patrons, who helped me get started with a pattern and swatch sample. As a guy, I don't want to walk into a yarn store and get the high brow attitude. The employees are experts, professional, and there to help you if you ask. This is an upscale yarn store. If it's your first project and you need some one-on-one help, they're there for you. I saw Burle helping a newcomer learn to cast on and knit for the first time. She didn't just hand her a flier about knitting lessons and send her on her way. Burle also did something that I'm familiar with in Missouri but haven't found to be as common here in Seattle. She asks for the customer's NAME. "Hi, what's your name?" is a simple way to recognize someone as a human being. Kudos to this store for upping the ante on customer involvement. read more

Stepping into Tricoté can be a tiny bit intimidating at first, because it is absolutely gorgeous and one would expect to spend a fortune. While it's not inexpensive yarn, they offer the highest quality and large selection and when you are going to put as much time and energy into your creation, why not go with the best? Once you have purchased your yarn, the owners have created a wonderfully warm and inviting atmosphere to sit around one of two round tables, and be able to knit with other customers, and they always have an employee standing at the ready to help you. I know this to be true, because I recently knitted my new son-in-law a Christmas stocking, and they made it so fun for me to work on this new project and helped me every step of the way. If you're rather new to knitting everyone in that store, both customers and employees encourage you along the way. I think I have found a new hobby and community of friends that I intend to enjoy for a very long time. read more

I wouldn't necessarily call this place "expensive", speaking as someone who happily purchases SQs of cashmere hand dyed yarns at $74/skein. It's about market price, keeping in mind that brick-and-mortar stores have higher expenses than an online shop and, therefore, more markup. Obviously if you're looking for $5-plus-a-50%-off-coupon Joann's acrylic, this isn't that kind of place, but neither is any non-big box yarn store. So I don't take issue with the price, but the selection...other than some lovely but ubiquitous shibui and rowan, they carry mostly what I imagine as "high end in the 80s"--novelty, shiny, furry stuff from old italian brands. Which is fine if you're into that, but if you're looking for more rustic, single-breed, locally produced yarns, this definitely isn't it; if you're looking for colorful hand dyes, this isn't it; if you're looking for super luxe exotic fibers in non-novelty form, this isn't it; if you're looking for middle-end acrylics and cotton-blends and superwash sock yarn, this...might be it, I'll be real, I didn't look. They have their own in-house patterns, with lots of samples to try on in the store, which I really like. That being said, their actual pattern purchasing interface (an app on a ipad) is super clunky, and they don't have any of their patterns on Ravelry, for mystifying unknown reasons. As far as treatment, they definitely weren't *nice*, but I'd call it more European Brusque. Which is not everyone's cup of tea, it's true, especially since yarn stores are generally very friendly. There was also some knitting circle happening in the back when I was there so I was mostly ignored. Not as much drama as I was picturing finally going into the "rude old lady" store, to be honest. Finally, even though I've been knitting and buying yarn for so long that I can generally tell the brand/line/fiber of most skeins from sight, I'll still maintain that color is the absolute WORST way of sorting yarn--workable but annoying for experienced knitters, completely off-putting for beginners. Most people come in with a general idea of what they want to make or even a pattern picked out; I don't know anyone who walks into a store just thinking "I want to make something yellow". read more

My first and last visit to this store was last week. The place was packed with knitters but apparently we were the only ones shopping. People had to shift their chairs or pull in their feet for us to move around the store. Something is wrong when the one actual CUSTOMER in the store is made to feel that they are upsetting everyone else's Zen. I absolutely HATE that they arrange by color. After browsing the entire store I wanted to scream, "Where is the damn sock yarn section?" Yes, the yarn looks pretty arranged by color but it makes for a disastrous and frustrating shopping experience. I still have no idea whether they had any sock yarn other than a handful of Socks That Rock in a basket by the register (STR was my entire reason for shopping there). By the way, they informed me they ONLY carry the lightweight and they only had about three colorways. Plus the price was jacked up. I had to go home and order five skeins of STR MW from the Blue Moon website - cheaper and sales tax-free - just to shake off the bad yarn shopping trip. I didn't know a bad yarn shopping trip was even POSSIBLE! :-) I gave one extra star because we were greeted by a sales person and got a parking spot. read more

On a recent "yarn crawl" with a few friends to the area I called ahead to let them know when we were coming. Based on one yelpers review I felt that this shop was a must stop visit. We were all very happy we stopped in. The other writer was right. We were not immediately greeted. No problem. It was gorgeous, colorful and well organized. The major difference between this shop and others I have visited from Chicago to LA and Seattle is that almost EVERY single pattern/project in this store is beautifully crafter with multiple strands of yarn. Gorgeous! And very very pricey! I had paid to download a "handbag" pattern and by the time I got done picking out the yarn etc... it was close to $300. I've paid that for leather handbags several times, but I fear I am not a good enough knitter to invest that much $$ to set an upcoming project in my "stash" box until I finish the other 9 projects on my list. I opted to put the yarn back for the time being. Once they discovered that not all of us were buying the atmosphere turned very chilly and while everyone was pleasant we felt more than comfortable moving on. I do recommend you stop by and revel in the beautiful yarns but be prepared to make a multi-yarn project. Additionally something I was told "you can only get these handles here now because they don't make them anymore" I found for $20 cheaper the next day at a shop in La Conner. Hmmmm? Curious! Tricoter is by far the best use store I've ever visited. I came in one day a few months ago to browse and walked out with a custom pattern for a sweater they made for me on the spot by the owner, Beryl. I've since come back for help with my sweater and various other projects as well as to sit and knit which they encourage you to do. The difference between this store and others is the help they offer. They encourage you to try the yarn out and knit a swatch before you buy because they truly want you to be happy with what you're making. It is on the expensive side, but well worth it for the amount of attention and help they provide, and the knowledge you gain. In fairness, I'm giving this store five stars for what it is, however, this is not a place I personally would enjoy spending time in. Tricotier is very "high end" - their clientele and the yarns offered. The woman at the counter was very polite and showed me some of their lovely yarns but no one else really acknowledged me - it's not exactly warm and friendly but I'm sure the people who frequent there enjoy it..... It's just that kind of shop. It appears that the yarns are arranged by color, not brand. I was looking for madelinetosh and didn't see any. They had some lovely Zara (sp?) that would have been fun to work with if I had a specific project in mind. It didn't seem like they had a big selection but maybe they only display small amounts and have stock in the back.... I did kind of feel like I was getting the "once over" when I walked in. The store is small and the table is right there when you walk in. I completely understand that when you're working on a project and concentrating you don't want to look up and grin at every patron who walks in the door, that being said, this could be intimidating to some people, and I can understand why some reviewers left poor reviews. It didn't really bother me, I just prefer a more diverse gathering. It is a lovely space, with lovely yarn, and I'm sure the people there know how to help. If you're looking for a space with a diverse clientele from all walks of life, and access to a very wide range of yarns then this is probably not the shop for you. read more

Saddest to me is the fact that I contacted the shop owner directly about some off-putting practices (I give businesses the benefit of the doubt, and a chance to explore possible issues to correct them before leaving a review), and received nada: crickets and tumbleweeds. I'd rather support the other options in the area, where I've found folks are courteous and encouraging, AND the selection is better! I just visited Tricoter this morning. I needed help with a pattern that I and Tricoter staff had constructed from a photograph. I always get the help I need, and I have never had a bad experience there. I've been knitting since I was nine years old, and I have visited innumerable yarn shops around the world. Tricoter is, hands down, the very best yarn shop I have ever frequented. The yarn selection is superb, the prices are comparable to those of other shops, and the added value of knitting swatches (even when I resist), so that I know exactly what size needle to use and what gauge to expect helps me calculate how much yarn I will need for a particular project. Tricoter always has the best quality yarn, and I choose to use the best possible materials for my projects. The patterns available are innovative and challenging, though you can also find simple projects, if you are learning. For those just starting out in knitting, there are always people around who can answer questions. Overall, customers could not make a better choice than to frequent Tricoter. There is always good conversation, a pleasant environment, and comfortable places to sit and knit. read more

Edit: I'm just going to add that I had a really *lovely* message from someone calling me a "tacky ass b*tch" for this review, which I really would not have expected from a shop that appeared to cater to the cardigan twin set crowd when last I stepped foot in it. It made me laugh because I love internet drama, but sadly, it did not make me change my opinion of this shop. I know, shocker, having your minions (employees? I really don't know.) harass reviewers will NOT actually make said reviewers love your establishment. Also, he wouldn't even engage in some mutual internet trolling - he blocked me after his heart warming message. Failing grade in internets! Anyway, keep on being classy, Tricoter and friends. Original review: I've been knitting for 7 years or so, and just heard about this shop a few months ago. Since then I've stopped in twice. Both times events were going on in the shop (a stitch n' bitch night the first time, and a book release party the second). No one said hi to me when I first walked into the store, or at any other time. People were sitting at tables throughout the store knitting, so the yarn and other products were really difficult to get to, and the employees didn't offer to help. Everyone there seemed to already know each other. I felt like because I'm younger and didn't really fit into the aesthetic of the store (yuppy), I was totally ignored. Granted, I happened to go on days that are probably busy and inclined to be more clique-y, but I was not impressed. My other complaint about Tricoter is that the yarn seems to be arranged by color (or something; it was hard to tell). This looks fine, but made it next to impossible to find anything. I love this place. Don't let the posts of the whiney, self-loathers who seemingly are irritated by the community of knitters who frequent the place dissuade you from checking out the beautiful yarn/notions. Yes the prices are high but high quality, hand painted yarn is not cheap. And how nice (rare?) it is that the owners encourage people to sit and knit rather than shop and immediately vacate the premises. Wish my local bookstore was this friendly. read more

Tricoter could be a great yarn shop but the staff possess such poor customer service skills that it makes a person want to avoid the place even if it is near by. It seems more like a club house for the ladies who lunch (or in this case knit) and if you aren't a member -please don't apply. I have been to a number of yarn shops around the country ( and for that matter in other countries) where there are people knitting in shops and they were rather inviting. This is not that sort of place. If you don't dress the part you are either ignored until someone sighs and gets up and decides to ring you up. The other version of their customer service is being followed every step of the way and watched like you are a twelve year old shoplifter in a candy store. Being asked every two minutes, "Can I help you?" by the same person over a period of 15 minutes does NOT endear me to you in the slightest. As for their stock, it is nice enough (but not that original to bear such a sense of entitlement) if a bit pricey. There are much better and friendlier yarn shops in Seattle that are worth patronizing. read more

I decided to take a trip to Madison Park to check out Tricoter's Winter Sale...as most of the yarn was 40% off. I used to live at the edge of Madison Park and I'm well aware how some of shops/restraurants here will treat you if you are...what's a good word for it...less affluent. But I love yarn and even more, I love yarn on sale. So, despite the lackluster reviews, I decided to visit Tricoter on the last day of their sale. I was quite pleasantly surprised. The place was packed and there were plenty of people in the front of the store knitting. However, I never felt as if I was unwelcomed. The staff was nice--perhaps a little overly helpful (ie...constantly asking me if I was finding what I needed or if I needed help). The selection was less than what you might find at other places (like at Weaving Works or the Fiber gallery) and I found the yarns on average to cost a couple dollars more. For these reasons, I probably won't go too often. However, I did see several types of yarn that I haven't seen at other yarn stores, so it's definitely worth checking out. read more

Absolutely wonderful knitting store. Gorgeous selections of yarns, but that is not the true highlight of this shop. Do not let yourself be intimidated by the women who work here (seems like past reviewers did just that)! If you are having a problem with a project, they have several people on staff whose job is to help you out. If you are a beginning knitter, make it a point to haunt Tricoter-you will be a better knitter for it. I can't tell you how many "humps" in my knitting they've helped me get over through the last few years. I probably would not still be a knitter if it wasn't for this store. I love visiting yarn stores while traveling. Was very easy to get to from downtown on the number 11 bus. Though buses in Seattle, that's a whole nother story. I found the store nice and friendly, got good help from the staff and stayed to knit. The local knitters were very welcoming. I'm not crazy about color coded yarn but the store was bright airy and welcoming. Got good lunch advice as well read more

I love this store. I have always been greeted warmly, and the women who work there are very helpful. I love being able to just sit down and get help as well as company on any project I'm attempting. The staff is very interested in helping you as long as they believe you will purchase something. I felt hurried and pressured to make a buying decision because I arrived at the store on a Saturday at 3:45 pm and they closed at 5:00 pm. The store is also closed Sunday and Monday. I was absolutely shocked at the price of my yarn when it was all rung up. I had no idea that my yarn was not returnable until I got in the car and drove away at 4:45 pm. While in the car I looked at the paper receipt and in red pen it was marked SALE and then the return policy was also circled in red (indicating that there are no returns on sale merchandise). I have had huge buyer's remorse. If you go there to shop, be sure to allow yourself plenty of time and be fully aware of the return policy. read more

I was hoping for sumptuous sock yarn, but they only carry one brand (Sock It To Me) which wasn't what I was looking for. (Only 340 yards for about $24...) Well . . . Although their yarns are beautiful and exotic, they're also way too pricey for the average knitter or crocheter. The store is very poorly arranged, and customer service (if you're not a first-name regular) is close to non-existent. I bought two skeins of hand-dyed silk yarn (a very expensive purchase on my budget). Since I don't have a yarn swift, I asked the person who waited on me if I could get the yarn wound into balls. She indicated my small purchase wasn't worth her time to wind into balls. When I asked if I could use the swift to wind the yarn myself, she said no one but store personnel were allowed to use it. She was very dismissive and seemed to want meout of the store ASAP, no doubt because there appeared to be about 10 people sitting around knitting and my purchase was interrupting the socializing. I gave it two stars because the yarn is truly beautiful and I have never seen it in any other shop, but I won't ever go back there to buy anything. From the way I was treated, I guess they don't really want my small change business anyway. read more

I visited this store for the first time yesterday. Lots of lovely and expensive yarns, arranged by color which doesn't happen to be my preference. However, the employee who assisted me was very helpful and friendly, I chatted with a couple of other people in the store, one sitting and knitting, the other shopping and found the store atmosphere fine. This store carries high end yarns, some found at other stores, and some I hadn't seen before. It's probably not a store I will shop in much, but I enjoyed going, and spent a pleasant hour and a half there and did make a purchase. Some people may appreciate the custom pattern service they offer, free if purchasing yarn. read more

Rude and overpriced. I was encouraged to purchase a yarn (many skeins) wholly inappropriate for the project I was working on. I have read all the reviews. And I, too, concur that I have had experiences here that were off-putting Knitting is such a sensuous experience and knitters are often, methinks, sensitive and tactilely aware. To be treated with snobbery, with lack of civility, with a pretension that causes one to shrink, causes me to walk a wide berth around this place. AND the yarns and designs are beautiful. It is the people who populate this place that cause a huge NO.. I would have to be really desperate to go back here because it is more than just not feeling cozy warm.
