I took my two grand daughters to buy then yarn and crocheted needs. They are 6 and 8 years old and thought why not teach them early. The lady there was really nice and pointed out which yarn and need were appropriate for their age. I also bought them a canvas bag so they can store their supplies. The lady said that on Sundays, people can come in and work on their projects there. My grand daughters were excited to learn that. Can wait to have them start on a simple scarf. Seattle Yarn is a charming fiber craft store in West Seattle, just a 30 minute drive from where I live in Kirkland. While not a big store, it felt warm and welcoming, and the yarn was displayed in a way that makes the most of the space available. There were several customers there on the Saturday morning I visited but the staff made time to offer help or exchange a friendly greeting. They had an interesting selection of notions and gift items any yarn enthusiast would love. I especially liked the shawl pins made from agates! I loved that the shop is located across the street from a park with nice benches. I can imagine sitting there on a nice fall afternoon working on my current project and enjoying coffee from the place just down the block. read more

The people were nice enough, lots of scratchy yarns, no super comfy chairs, it's a nice open space and definitely good for the head mindset, but it's definitely not cozy. I wasn't particularly impressed with their yarn selection and none of their notions had prices on them, and so while I was tempted to buy a couple of things... I didn't want them enough to inquire as to how much they cost. Button selection also left something to be desired. Worth a trip to say that I've been there and look around, but not worth a trip beyond that. read more

Great yarn selection. I have a hard time buying yarn without being able to touch it, so I love having a local store to go to. Prices aren't really much higher than online, once you account for shipping costs. The knitting nights (Wednesday) seem super chatty and social, lots of snacks. As a brand new knitter, I worry of looking silly with my mistakes and hate to impose on the experts. I made a mess of my first skein and returned for help. It's the LYS that's closest to me when I'm home, which is really the only reason why I go here. Lately, I've been going to other stores because of my experiences here. They haven't been horrible, it's just that they haven't been particularly great. I've been coming here for a few years now, and walking in is always awkward. I'm not a fan of small talk, so it's nice that the workers always give me a quick hello and offer help, but on many occasions I'm one of the only ones there, and the workers are engaged in conversations that don't seem that appropriate for a work place...especially an open one, where your customers can hear you. I understand that the days can be slow/long, but hearing talks about the police coming to your friends' house and awkward relationship advice is just something that I feel can be left at home, or for a phone conversation later. Or you know, at least until I leave the store. They also don't really have that great of a selection. I feel like for the past year, I've gone in and their stock of Malabrigo and madelinetosh has decreased significantly. Or rather, it just seems like they've sold it all and haven't bothered to re-stock. It leaves only 3-4 colorways of Malabrigo Sock to choose from at any given time, or a random skein or two of madtosh Vintage. One thing I do like is that they let you wind the yarn yourself, and their needle stock is well organized and plentiful. I last came here after Christmas because I had a gift certificate, but I most likely won't be back, unless I need something small. I'd rather drive further for a better selection and a better vibe. read more

Best yarn store I've been to. (Okay, I've not been to many, but all the same this one is STILL the best among those that I HAVE been to. :-p) Plenty of yarn. Pretty much anything you could want. And while it's doubtful that they won't have what you want, they do special orders too, so they probably will be able to get it! Have any questions? They're more than wiling to help. Have a problem with a pattern that you're working on? They can help with that too! Need some personal one-on-one tutoring? Many of their employees are also available for hire for training sessions as well. Need a garment/project fixed/repaired? They're willing to help. Just stop by and if any of them have the time, they may be able to negotiate. These people do their best to please. The staff is exceedingly friendly as well, and VERY knowledgeable. They also carry a wide variety of knitting books and patterns. The store is a veritable library of yarn-related information! But it doesn't stop there, ...oh no. They're also friendly to those of the crocheting persuasion. They carry books and hooks and pretty much everythin you'd need. And although not all the employees there crochet, there are still quite a few that DO and can probably help. But WAIT! There's MORE! Felting your thing? Well bucko, you're IN LUCK! They also have a wide variety of felting related stock. From cute fun kits that also make great gifts (I've spent quite a while looking through their fun collection), to book, as well as raw wool (though in limited quantities). STOP! We're not done yet! They also have everything you'd need for cross-stitching! A great supply of embroidery floss in stock, and some fun patterns. And not just patterns that you'd expect to be popular among the wizened crowd... though they have those too. SERIOUSLY, you've got to stop assuming it ends there. There's MORE! Need buttons, or a knitter looms? Yeah, they've got those too. :-] AND... YES AND... They also occasionally have special events. And weekly knitting circles! Come on! Come to browse, stay to knit. Seattle Yarn, thou art FANNNTASTIC. I came here to get some yarn for a blanket. It'll be a treat for myself to use when nursing school starts in January. Problem is... I'm such a newbie that I didn't really know what I was looking for. Well, other than "something soft and not too expensive and that doesn't pill." Enter: Rachel. She listened to my drawn out story about how I came to the idea of the blanket I want and suggested a few types of wool yarn. Highs and lows, thick and thin... And then after looking around some more, I decided on cotton yarn. She answered my questions about gauge and other noob subjects. I never once felt stupid or less welcome. The two things that topped off my visit and crowned Seattle Yarns as my new favorite knitting destination? Rachel offered to hold extra skeins for me in the same dye lot, so I could save my money for more time-sensitive things like Christmas presents. I thought that was amazing customer service. Also, she wound my yarn for me so it'd be less likely to be tangled. (I don't know if that's common practice for yarn shops, but they sure as hell don't do that for you at Joann's or Michaels!) Aside from the excellent & warm customer service, they have an overwhelming (in a good way) selection of yarns and needles. Super thick, silky, beginners, cotton, tweed... It's there. Someone else described Seattle Yarn as the 'epitome of Seattle freeze,' and that perfectly describes my visit today.

This is my kind of yarn shop. After visiting "the wrong yarn store" yesterday, I headed to this shop and this was the right store for me. They are in the process of rearranging the stock and as I understand it, the long-time owner, Virginia, is transferring the business to her daughter. Leah (sp?) - the woman who opened the shop greeted me warmly when I opened the door. She and I chatted for a bit while I knit a few rows and considered what yarn to add to my stash... I wanted to hang out for a bit like I do at my yarn shop at home and I felt right at home here. I watched Leah and Virginia help this "interesting" lady who had a bit of a complicated request, with kindness and patience- well done! No "mean girls" here. When I finally decided on my skein of Tosh DK, Virginia gladly wound it up for me.... If I lived in Seattle, this would be my LYS Note to the daughter taking over: keep it warm and friendly like your mom has it and you will succeed! Best wishes to the new store! I waffle between 3 and 4 stars. Decent yarn store but not GREAT. I am spoiled living in Seattle with so many yarn stores to choose from. :-) Fairly large selection, but honestly I find it a bit ho-hum. Enormous selection of "staples" such as Cascade 220, Lamb's Pride, Lopi, etc. so it's great for felting projects. Sock yarn selection is rather large but not particularly interesting. Haven't seen anything very "artsy" except maybe the Koigu. There is a gentleman on the staff that is simply WONDERFUL. Honestly, he is the most superbly helpful person I have EVER interacted with at a yarn store. On the flip side there is one person who works there who is flippant and obnoxious - I just cringe when I walk in and see this person. I work in West Seattle so I do stop by on my lunch breaks from time to time but most of the time I leave without buying anything. They just don't seem to stock the types of things that tempt me. They don't stock Crystal Palace needles either. :-( One thing I really like about this store - and what makes it a bit different from other Seattle yarn stores, is the largeness of the space. There are at least three different seating areas for browsing patterns, knitting, asking for help, etc. I can't stand walking into a tiny yarn store packed with people knitting who stare at you when you walk in the door making you, the person trying to BUY something, feel like an intruder. I've never felt this way at Seattle Yarn. It really is a nice atmosphere. If I'm honest though, I'd trade the seating area for more interesting yarn and lower prices. This little store is packed with wonderful yarns, supplies and books. I especially like the colorful sock yarns as socks are such a quick, interesting project and make wonderful gifts. I've always found the staff quite helpful when I needed help and willing to let me browse about as long as I wished. Virginia was always super helpful with tips about knitting. I never felt at all uncomfortable stopping by with a piece of knitting just to absorb the atmosphere. The classes do congregate at a table and are focused on each other and their projects but I didn't find that at all unfriendly. Parking can be tough but it's a nice neighborhood and I've always been able to find parking within a block or two even when the small lot is full. There's a punch card so customers get a freebie after a certain amount of purchases. I haven't visited the shop under the new ownership of the daughter but I will be heading there in the next few days and I'll update this review if anything has changed. Update: The layout and yarn selection has changed a bit and the notions seem less diverse than formerly... but maybe that's just dinosaur syndrome, you know, older people with impaired memories saying things were better in the good old days. The staff will give total attention to the person who's being attended. No quick questions allowed to interrupt. So be patient and enjoy when it's your turn. read more

Average selection of yarns, sweater quantity unavailable in the high-end yarn lines, a ton of knick- knacks and I mean a TON, a good selection of pattern books though some are really outdated. Staff ranges between okay to rude. I wasn't able to get the yarn I needed even though on the phone they told me that they had it so after driving 30 minutes I came to find out that they didn't. This was upsetting tho I didn't say anything about it to the lady who was there. I asked her if she knew any other yarn shops that may have the yarn I needed. First she was dismissive and told me she didn't really know. Then she reluctantly gave me a few ideas and ruined it by saying uncalled for rude and critical things about the two stores she mentioned. I like visiting this shop every time I am in West Seattle. I love heading to Husky Deli to grab an ice-cream cone then traveling to this yarn shop. Most of the time when i'm in this shop i just spend a long time browsing around but I only buy a few things because I feel very overwhelmed. They have a HUGE selection of yarn but it doesn't mean that all the yarns they well are great. They have a whole selection of cheap acrylic yarn and scratchy wool yarn that i'm not a huge fan of. Their yarns are all crammed together and its somewhat unorganized but that doesnt bother me much. They have a very large selection of books, needles, buttons, and plenty of pattern magazines. I'm not a fan of their sock yarns though. Nothing interesting to it. The ladies here are nice and can be helpful when you need help. They have never been pushy to me. They usually greet you when you enter and then leave you alone unless you ask them questions. The times i've been there, there are always at least 2 or more ladies working and knitting together next to the register. read more

I was hopeful that with new owners the feeling would be different at Seattle Yarns. Unfortunately, I was not warmly welcomed when I visited this shop during the Puget Sound LYS tour. Not welcome in the slightest. It seems to me that if you're not in their "inner circle" you're basically treated as if you shouldn't be there. When I arrived, no one spoke to me, I had to ask someone where to go to have my tour passport stamped and after that person stamped me, I had to wander around the shop to find the featured pattern, the lady who stamped me was not thoughtful enough to direct me to where the rest of the event stations were (which was common at the other shops). When I asked, I was told in an condescending tone, "by the balloons", as if I should have seen the balloons which were in the corner of the shop behind a tall display, this blocking the view of the balloons. I felt stupid because of the tone she had and again, very unwelcome. When I arrived to the featured pattern, the person at that station was socializing with someone who was clearly a friend of the shop and she did not even acknowledge me. I had to find the pattern, yarn, drawing, and pin by myself. If I didn't like visiting all the shops, I would never go out of my way to visit this shop again. As it is now, I will never purchase from them again. If you live in the Seattle area, this is not a place I would go out of my way to get to (it's in west Seattle). This is unfortunate because they still have a large shop with a great selection of yarn. Word of advise to the new owners and employees, work on your warmth and don't have the cliche "Seattle freeze" attitude. You need to be kind and welcoming to people even if they aren't your friends or shop regulars. How do you think you create new regulars?! read more

I am an avid knitter. I love all things yarn and have big issues keeping my yarn purchases under control. When I moved to West Seattle I was very excited to be close to a local yarn store. Unfortunately, I went to the store once and was so turned off that I never returned. I agree with other reviews that the store is beautiful, well organized, complete with a varied stock. The huge problem was the icy reception upon entering the store. One of the worker's barely looked up. I did see a lot of items that I was interested in but the cold demeanor of the staff completely ruined the experience. I ended up leaving empty handed and traveled to a big box store instead for my knitting needs. I was really disappointed because I wanted to support a local business. I hope they are a little more welcoming if I ever decide to go back. read more

came by here for three yarns (malabrigo chunky, chloe & spud sweater, and imperial columbia)... and they didn't have any of them. when i asked, one of the ladies kept trying to convince me that i was thinking of malabrigo rasta... blah. i did see a mom and son knitting in the back area, which was cool, but the yarns they have here just don't compare to other stores i've been to in the city... just not worth the drive to WS. read more

I am a first time knitter with severe anxiety. Destiny (store owner) and Elsbeth (co-worker) are unbelievably helpful and caring to anyone entering the store. I have spent countless hours getting help for a project I am attempting and they are continually giving me encouragement and positive reinforcement. The very cool thing is the Wednesday and Thursday group of women that come in from 6-8:00 every week. They are incredibly inviting, helpful and social. (I am a newcomer to Seattle.) I believe Destiny has only owed this store for a few months and this is a wonderful "find" for West Seattle. She is WONDERFUL! I feel already like I belong and that I can go in any time for help. Yarn selection was decent, though a little tough to navigate. What really bugged me the most was how unhelpful the staff was. No one bothered to get up or see if I needed any help when I walked in - all I received was a 'hello', and then back to their projects they went. I understand giving a customer space and time to peruse the yarn, but really? They had absolutely no interest in what I was shopping for or if I was looking for a particular yarn, etc. I ended up buying about 6 skeins of yarn, and when I asked about the winder, one of them showed me how to use it, and then just left to go back and work on their own project. Personally, I like winding my own yarn, but it seemed odd to me that they would just make me do it myself rather than offering to do it, especially considering I was the only customer in the store. Overall, it's not a bad store, especially if you're just looking to do a small project (as many have mentioned, there often isn't a lot of sweater-quantity yarn in the higher-end yarns). However, I think there are stores in the Seattle area with a better selection and better customer service. read more

This is a great yarn shop. The only one in West Seattle that I know of, but it is definatly worth the drive. Huge selection of yarn, very nice and helpfull employees who are always friendly. They offer childrens classes and adult classes as well. They even have a play space just for kids to keep them busy while you shop. Since this is the only yarn shop I have been to in the Seattle area other than Joann and such (blaaa...) I can't say how the rate in comparisson to other area yarn shops. read more

I wonder if the poor reviews were written by other yarn stores? I have lived in West Seattle for 8 years and Seattle yarn is my go to place when I would like to test out a new yarn. There is always a group of ladies knitting at a table who I assume are there learning something. Without a single exception someone always jumps up to say hi and offers to help me. I have never received an icy reception. -They have an awesome selection of yarns at many price points. -They always have something on sale. -The people who work there are knowledgable and ready to answer any questions, and help me find the perfect yarn for my project. -They will order yarn in for me if I love something and need a different color. My only complaint is that I wish they had a better tool selection because I love to knit with really high quality needles. However, I can always order those online. I live in West Seattle so come here a lot for my supplies. They are great with your staples - worsted weights, beautiful wool blends and sock/baby weight. They don't try to cater to the boutique-y crowd, which for the most part suits me fine. I'm the type of knitter that doesn't usually have a super specific yarn type in mind when I shop - I look at weight and price and go from there. I gave them 4 stars instead of 5 because they don't have the biggest variety.. I would like to see more organics, more cashmere blends (or even just cashmere) and non-wool offerings. I know it's gotta be hard to suit EVERYONE out there, they do a pretty good job. read more

Seattle is well - famous for many things - its coffee, Boeing, its great number of start ups, grunge. But one thing it isn't world famous for, as far as I can tell, is its knitting - and after my experience at Seattle Yarn, I would suggest that that is a serious oversight. With a philosophy both that a knitting store should fix its customers' knitting mistakes for free - no matter how many times a said customer should approach them - and that it should provide the best possible knitting environment for thes customers, thus allowing them to stay as long as they want in the shop (if they're like me, asking questions all the while). Between the freedom to ask questions - without ever being made to feel a burden - and the space and time to work through what I had just been shown, I, a new knitter - and, let us be honest, a pretty poor one--had finally found a place where I felt comfortable, uncriticized, and at home. (In case you thought I forgot about this part in my love-fest, when I finally went - no obligation--to pick out some yarn, I found that Seattle Yarn was second to none in their selection, of course of yarns, but also of needles and other accoutrements.) For knitters who love knitting, for lapsed knitters who need a kick in the pants, for those who need to restore their faith in the art - I have found the place for you. read more

We just finished our yarn crawl for the summer of 2010 and I had to sign into Yelp to see what others thought of the stores we had been in. I had to say that of the 7 stores we went in today this was by far the least friendly of all. Yarn selection is OK though in my opinion somewhat over priced, the service leaves much to be desired. I tried to ask a question about a project and was treated dismissively. I was disappointed when same attitude was shown when I tried to ask about yarn that I wanted to purchase. I have never left bad feedback for a business but my experience at this store was unacceptable today. The lady working was extremely rude to my three year old son. He walked by some yarn and accidentally knocked a few rolls off with his coat. I asked him to put them back and while he was putting them back the lady came over acted all annoyed at us and told him he needed to go to the play area. She kept telling him this but he's three and wanted to stay with me. When he continued to put the three rolls back she rolled her eyes at me and told me to stop trying to fix it and just take him to the play area. I couldn't believe her lack of patience in something so minor. Then I was told several times after this that there was a play area he should go to. He wasn't touching anything or bothering anyone. The thing that really angered me is when I went to check out. He was touching a scarf next to the cashier. I asked him nicely to not touch it. When he didn't stop immediately she YELLED at him by name. It made both me and my son jump and I'm pretty sure everyone else in the store. All for touching a scarf. I have never been treated with such disrespect and never in my life have I ever had someone from a store cross a boundary and try to parent my child. Warning to parents, stay clear of this store. There is definitely zero tolerance/patience for small children. West Seattle yarn you have lost my long time business. If I had known this is how you treat children, I wouldn't have given you two years of my business. I'll gladly take my money else where. read more
