What a beautiful and well thought out business. I was invited to participate in their trunk show this past weekend and enjoyed pretty much everything about this yarn lover's paradise. I was immediately impressed upon entering the store. It felt as though I had crossed the other side of the wardrobe and ended up in Knitting Narnia. Shelves of beautiful fabrics, yarns, and so many more items you didn't know you needed, but now that you've seen them you just gots to have them. There are tables and chairs nestled about for groups to hang out and knit while enjoying a coffee or snack from the Firebird Cafe located in the back of the shop. The cafe has a lot of selection of sweet and savory snackums including gluten free items; however, when I asked about contamination risk for celiac peeps they weren't sure how safe it was, so I stuck to the hot chocolate which was hot..and chocolaty..and full of goodness. May I also note that they serve wine and I am just so on board with that. Wine, knitting, and someone brought their cat in on leash... I see no reason to ever leave this place. This shop offers tons of events like the one I participated in this weekend where they invite local artists to set up inside their store and peddle their wares. The excitement from their regulars the moment the doors opened was palpable. They were just all about getting their paws on the fun, beautiful, and handy items for sale. In addition to events like these, this shop stays super involved with their locals by hosting classes that range well beyond knitting and crocheting. Every individual I interacted with here brought their best energy and enthusiasm and were so upbeat I started wondering what the secret these knitters are putting in their herbal tea... and if they'd share some with me. If you're a crafty fellow definitely check this place out. You might just walk out with the find of a lifetime, some magical knitter's tea, or even get to pet a cat on a leash...the possibilities are endless. read more

Oh my goodness. I need more superlatives! This is one outstanding store for fiber artisans. Calling it a craft store would be a disservice. I deliberately planned a detour to go here after reading all the reviews here and on Ravelry.com. I was on my way home from Fiber Fusion in Monroe, and was tired, but got a pick-me-up just by walking into the store. I was greeted by Betsey, who was extremely helpful and friendly, showing me where everything was located. Including the bakery and espresso bar. Yep. In-house. I checked out the yarn, the spinning fiber, the fabric, the buttons, the patterns, the felting and dyeing supplies. Then I wandered around the yarns some more. I checked out the wonderful lounge, where people can go to eat the goodies they've bought at the bakery or just get together to talk and knit. And yes, I checked out the restroom, which was spotless. The store is extremely spacious and well organized. The staff is very friendly and eager to help. It was surprisingly busy for a Sunday, and Lysa, the manager,and Betsey were kept extremely busy. But they were friendly and helpful to everyone, and were always patient. The selections of everything were fantastic. It truly is an artist's nirvana. With espresso. I wish it wasn't so far away from me, but you can be sure that if I'm ever in the area again, anywhere within an hour, I'll be making another stop there. Yarn, fiber, bakery, espresso. Attended an opening for the new Firebird Cafe in this space where I had a tasty mocha and quiche. What a great idea for this colorful, lively, and bustling shop+hangout+classroom for yarn lovers, whether you're into knitting, crochet, and felting. They have specialty fabrics too, but the selection is small but quirky. The greatest thing is how many finished example projects they showcase for sale and inspiration. I love the ambiance, but sadly, the location is somewhat far from home, ~5 minutes from Ikea. read more

This shop was a destination place for all my friends and family knitters that visited me in Seattle. The staff was super helpful and the inventory was die for!!! Just recently, the store announced that they were closing their retail location, but would continue online sales (and hopefully classes). I will miss this wonderful yarn store because it was delightfully special. I will continue to shop on their website and I hope Karin Skacel (the owner) will continue her informative Videos on their newsletter. I am sorry to say that there are too many yarn specialty shops closing in this area. I've always viewed these shops as places to meet and socialize with knitters. The "Knitting Circle" is not quite the same on Zoom. Thank you Karin for providing us that special place to find wonderful yarns and very enjoyable company. In the three and a half years I have been a knitter (and now crocheter, too), I have had the opportunity to get to about 15 of the Local Yarn Stores on the LYS Tours every spring (although not necessarily during the LYS Tour) in the Puget Sound area. I have been to knit shops in South Carolina, Michigan, and even in Dublin, Ireland, and throughout England. I am so elated that Makers' Mercantile is one of the closer shops to my home (although it isn't just down the street from me), as I really feel that it has some of the best of everything I have found throughout my travels. Makers' Mercantile is really a destination spot: with Rylie Cakes GF Bakery (this plus the COMPLETE collection of Addi Needles were what brought me in) I can come in and work on my project, meet with friends, take a class, and still get sustenance in food and beverages. The space is large enough that I can get up and walk around when I need a break from my project. The staff is available and extremely knowledgeable when I am stuck on a project and need assistance (Liz helped me to calculate how much yarn would be needed for an Aran Sweater pattern I bought from Ireland; Jaime reverse engineered a technical pattern on which I had apparently dropped a stitch but couldn't figure out; and every is encouraging and interested in my current projects). The classes are amazing - small enough for personal attention from the instructors but with enough other students to expand the learning exponentially based on each student's experiences. My children have taken weaving classes and felt classes; my daughter had her birthday party here with a specialized class for her and her friends. I have taken an Artfelt class, a knitting class, and have come for lectures and special events. I walk away every time feeling like I received more than my money's worth from every event! I love that everyone seems to know me (and my children) by name. I relish the Saturday mornings when I get to come for the hot breakfast. I savor my time there, working independently or making new friends who share a passion for quality yarn in a wonderful place. Makers' Mercantile is a gem - not just in Kent but for the entire Puget Sound area! read more

The sock class taught by Kim was a bad experience for me. First off we didn't get a pattern, only a "suggestion" sheet. She said people interpret patterns differently so she doesn't give out patterns. Never heard that one before. Also, we didn't complete the socks in class because the class wasn't long enough. There should have been a 3rd day in stead of 2 or more class hours. We had to finish them at home and I struggled with that being new to knitting socks. The class description said we would learn the magic cast on, but instead she did the cast on for all of us herself to move it along faster and we were told to look up the instructions on YouTube. After class, comment sheets were given out and she said it didn't matter how we would rate her because the store would never let her go. That's high confidence right there. Needless to say I will not take a class taught by Kim again and honestly I would like a refund because I learned more on YouTube than in this class. read more

I had previously gone to another craft store closer to me, but wasn't very pleased with my experience. I wanted to take up crochet because it was a way for me to remember my grandmother who made many beautiful afghans before her passing 5 years ago. At this other craft store they just handed me things without a moment to explain why they chose the size needle, the yarn weight, or anything. When I walked into Makers' Mercantile, it was the exact opposite experience. I explained to the woman at the register what I needed, and she took me around the store and introduced me to the amazing women there who had incredible knowledge to share. Everyone I spoke to was so enthusiastic about my goals, and invited me in with open arms. I was overwhelmed with gratitude, and will recommend this amazing local business to anyone who will listen. This store has a lot going for it. The yarn selection is huge, well priced and good quality. Service is usually excellent with an occasional slip up. They have a rewards program and always add your purchases to your account which I really appreciate. I did not give it more stars since it carries only one brand of needles, which I do not like. Without checking closely it appears that all the yarn is also from the same corporation, Skacel. All in all I recommend this yarn store and you should check it out if you are a knitter or crocheter. read more

This unassuming location is incredibly unassuming. I've passed it so many times and didn't even realize it was there until a friend was driving and said, "I think you might like this place..." We pulled up and I was like... OMG YARN. OMG YARN. OMG YARN. OMG YARN. OMG YARN. Practically tripped going in...and then...and then... *sniffles* there was a cafe inside that had the most heavenly cookies. I was honestly in sensory overload and now I know where to buy high quality yarn. What did I buy? Why washi tape, of course. Because you always go to a yarn store and buy washi tape. Oh, and I also bought some stitch markers. They don't have a lot of crochet things. Clearly this store is geared towards knitters. I'm ok with that. Can't wait to take a knitting class there. Took the knitting 101 class here with Kim. She's great! She taught a class of 6 of us. She taught us how to cast on and knit the first class. She tailored the class to each of us. Some people got to learn a second stitch the purl in the first class while others she assisted at their pace. The second class some got started on a project and some learned to purl. Great way to learn to knit! I'd come here all the time to knit and get yarn but it's an hour away from me. They also serve wine and have a gluten free bakery! read more

I discovered this craft store during the recent yarn store tour in Seattle. Makers Mercantile does indeed have lots of lovely yarn, but they also have other interesting craft materials and kits as well as a gluten-free bakery (with delicious French macarons) and good espresso. They offer various classes as well as space for meetings. They're located in a somewhat industrial strip mall, but inside their space is well-lit and colorful, with yarn bombed pillars and lots to look at. Very friendly staff, too! read more

This was my second yarn shop stop during my trip to Washington after seeing it highly recommended by several people on the Ravelry forums. The store is well lit and cheerful and the staff is great, giving me a mini verbal tour about the shop, it's parent company, and the attached bakery. There's a room to sit and knit or crochet as well! They also sell a bit of fabric, sewing patterns, and tons of buttons! The yarns are beautifully displayed and there are many to choose from, and while this place was a bit pricier than the other yarn shop I visited, I took home some beautiful baby alpaca yarn and a book with some fun, whimsical designs. I had an enjoyable visit and I look forward to picking a beautiful project for my newly purchased yarns. Do so by if you're in the area! read more

This great little yarn shop never popped up on my radar when looking around the Seattle area. I was looking for a very specific color of Zitron Trekking XXL Tweed yarn and couldn't find it anywhere - unless I wanted to have it shipped from Europe. I came to learn that Zitron is distributed in the US by Skacel and the US Skacel warehouse is in Kent. I called the Kent warehouse for help and was told "Maker's Mercantile is our retail shop, it's just down the street." Finally, my search is over! The shop is owned by Skacel so I was not surprised by the lack of alternate brands pointed out in other reviews (Addi needles only, no Cascade yarn, etc.) This is a specialty shop but I was so glad to see the entire color palette of a yarn line rather than the 2 or 3 colors other shops might have. Was looking for a new favorite yarn/craft store and found this place. It's perfect! The staff was super friendly and helpful, the selection was plentiful, the store was nicely laid out and THEY HAVE A BAKERY! A GLUTEN FREE BAKERY! Their treats are super tasty! They are open some nights for open knitting groups, have a special breakfast event thing on Saturday mornings, and have lots of classes. One of the employees mentioned to me that they're adding on a sewing room. They even have a rewards card (something like for every $100 you spend, you get $20 back). As a crafter, who is also celiac, this place is DANGEROUS! Or my new home. Either way, I will definitely be back! read more

I love this shop. Lots of yarn to choose from and if you are a sewer their fabric choices are pretty amazing. The fabric actually makes me want to develop my sewing skills. The staff are all very knowledgeable and helpful. They took time to help me find just the right yarn for my pattern. They also have a coffee shop/gluten free bakery inside and plenty of seating so you can enjoy your treat and knit comfortably. The only drawback here is that all the yarn is from the same manufacturer, Skacel. I didn't remove a star because there really is so much to choose from and I've always found what I needed and a lot of yarn I just had to have. read more

Tonight was my second time here but my first time at Knit Night and it was fun! I struggle with anxiety and PTSD and was turned off of LYS because of a previous experience but this one is amazing. The ladies there are nice and helpful and there's a very relaxed and casual atmosphere to the whole place. I was too nervous to try the cafe this time but next Knit Night I'm definitely going to have to try something! read more

When I pulled into the parking lot of an industrial strip mall, I was a little perplexed. But my first thought upon walking into the store was, " How cute!" The store is charming and the ladies working were kind, friendly, and thoughtful. Cute kids crafts, tons and tons of yarn, some fabric, and very cute and reasonably priced sewing patterns. A button selection like nothing I've ever seen before. Monkey faces, frogs, cows, etc. Cute ones painted with dog faces and even martinis. There was even a pillar wrapped with knitted or crocheted snakes with goofy grins. You couldn't help but to smile at them. There are a variety of classes offered as well. In the back of the store, there is a Gluten-free bakery. I didn't try anything, but it all looked incredibly delicious. I will be definitely be back in the future. read more

I walked in and immediately decided that this is The Magical Yarn Shop. It has an almost overwhelming amount of yarns and needles. It also has a dedicated gluten free bakery and restaurant. This place is fabulous!! Right away, I was thrilled to find a full gluten-free bakery, filled with savory pastries, pies, g-free mac and cheese, and tons of goodies, inside this Mercantile. They have an assortment of bargain priced to high quality yarns and patterns. There is a semi-separate seating area to have a stitch and bitch. They have a wall of buttons! I have a raspberry, wool coat and I wanted to replace the plastic, matching buttons on it with something more personal. I found Quetzalcoatl buttons, but they were too small for my button holes, no matter how many times I wished them bigger. I still purchased one, for the hidden flap button, at the inside top of the coat. I literally went back and forth with which buttons I wanted to purchase for almost two hours. What can I say? I'm indecisive. LOL I had four exterior buttons to replace; two decorative and two practical. I ended up getting two smaller, wooden ones with spiral decorations on two-thirds of them, and two plastic-made-to-look-like-wood, celtic knot circles for the practical use buttons, as they were large enough. The only reason I even made a decision is the oh-so-helpful ladies who worked there, and realized I was having a hard time narrowing it down. After the first hour, I had accepted they wouldn't all match. It took them helping me, off and on, over the course of another hour, and looking to see if they could find a larger Quetzalcoatl button to order for me, to help me make a decision. They gave me honest feedback, and helped me figure out what I wanted for the coat. I know how much that level of helpfulness and knowledge matters, as my mother quilts, knits and sews. She tried to teach me. A couple of needles might have ended up in the cat's paws, and one in the dog. The article, she had me make, ended up covered in tree sap the first time I wore it. It didn't end well. I did learn to appreciate the work that goes into all those artistic crafts, and not to be trusted with tiny, sharp objects. read more
